Happy New Year! It's the new musical film everyone is talking about, so we figured we'd talk about it. Wicked: Part I! This 160-minute movie covers the first half of this epic adaptation of the popular musical adaptation Wicked by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, which is based on the 1995 novel Wicked by Gregory Maguire, which comes from the universe of L. Frank Baum's Oz books which were adapted into the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba Thropp, who eventually becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, but it's gonna take a long time for her to get there. Along the way, she befriends Ariana Grande who plays Galinda Upland and encounters Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible and Jeff Goldblum as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The film is directed by Jon M. Chu and also stars Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, and Peter Dinklage. In this movie you'll hear hit songs like "The Wizard and I", "Popular", "Defying Gravity", and so much more. Listen to our thoughts and feelings on this fantastical episode!
Hosts Mike and Kenny discuss the blockbusting film adaptation of Act 1 of the musical Wicked which stars Cynthia Erivo, and Ariana Grande. Directed by Jon M. Chu. Wicked Pt. 1offers the back story of The Wizard of Oz's Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West as well as the Wizard. Cynthia Erivo stars as Elphaba, a child conceived via an affair with green skin and rejected by her father. Ariana Grande stars as Galinda, born into wealth and influence and seemingly perfect. Galinda and Elphaba become roommates and rivals at Shiz University where both quickly become the center of attention, and eventually friends. The film features outstanding vocal performances by Erivo and Grande as well as very strong visuals and production design. Jeff Goldbloom co-stars as the Wizard with Michelle Yeoh co-starring as Madame Morrible, the professor of magic. Jonathan Bailey co-stars as the romantic Prince Fiyero. Faith Spotted: The question of God in L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Where does evil / wickedness come from? The ability for narratives to cast wickedness on those undeserving of it as well as hide the wickedness and evil of others. Though our faith teaches we are all born into sin, what roll does environtmental elements and circumstances play in becoming evil/wicked? All persons are created by and are beloved children of God, therefore as persons of faith we are called to respect and preserve the agency of "others" regardless of their faith or place. As Christians we can celebrate the defeat of evil and the removal of the threat of evil and wickedness but we are not to celebrate the suffering or death of those who commit evil or wicked acts as this violates Christ's command to love all persons, even our enemies, as well as the command to forgive even one's enemies. While it can seem impossible, we are called to do so and can be empowered by God to do so. Persons of the Christian faith are not to blame persons or punish them for the sins of others. In this episode of the Fully-Booked podcast, we dive into the magical world of Wicked, the long-awaited film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical. Releasing in two parts, with the first installment hitting theaters in November 2024, Wicked promises to enchant audiences with its dazzling visuals, incredible performances, and timeless themes of friendship, acceptance, and personal growth. The Enduring Legacy of Oz Before delving into the specifics of the film, it's important to recognize the enduring cultural impact of the Oz universe. L. Frank Baum's original novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was published in 1900, sparking a franchise that has captivated audiences for over a century. From the iconic 1939 film starring Judy Garland to countless adaptations across various media, the world of Oz has become a beloved part of our collective imagination. Wicked, based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, offers a fresh perspective on this classic tale. By exploring the origins and complex relationship between Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (the Good Witch), the story challenges our preconceptions and invites us to consider the nature of good and evil. From Stage to Screen: Adapting a Broadway Sensation The journey of Wicked from page to stage to screen is a testament to the power of great storytelling. The musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, premiered on Broadway in 2003 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. With its soaring melodies, clever wordplay, and heartfelt performances, Wicked has captivated audiences worldwide for nearly two decades. Meaghan: Shout out to, like, what is it? Steven Schwartz, who I think wrote the original stage musical. Shout out to him because he wrote some bangers for Popular. Bringing this beloved musical to the big screen was no small feat. Director Jon M. Chu, known for his work on Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights, faced the challenge of translating the stage production's magic and intimacy into a cinematic experience. By leveraging the power of film technology and assembling an all-star cast, Chu has created a visually stunning and emotionally resonant adaptation that stays true to the spirit of the original while expanding its scope and reach. A Star-Studded Cast and Stunning Visuals One of the film's greatest strengths is its exceptional cast. Pop sensation Ariana Grande brings her powerhouse vocals and comedic timing to the role of Galinda, while Tony Award-winner Cynthia Erivo delivers a deeply moving and nuanced portrayal of Elphaba. The chemistry between the two leads is palpable, and their performances anchor the film's emotional core. Meaghan: That's it. Like, I have no feelings really about Ariana Grande one way or another kind of thing, but she did a really good job. Shirin: She did a great job. Really good. The supporting cast is equally impressive, with standout turns from Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard. Each actor brings depth and complexity to their role, elevating the material and creating a rich tapestry of characters. Visually, Wicked is a feast for the eyes. The production design is lush and immersive, with intricate costumes, jaw-dropping sets, and stunning visual effects that transport the audience to the magical land of Oz. The film's use of color and light is particularly noteworthy, with Elphaba's emerald green skin and Galinda's pastel pink wardrobe serving as visual markers of their characters' journeys. Themes and Resonance At its core, Wicked is a story about friendship, acceptance, and the power of personal choice. Through Elphaba and Galinda's unlikely bond, the film explores themes of prejudice, conformity, and the consequences of our actions. As Elphaba grapples with her identity and the expectations placed upon her, she becomes a symbol of resilience and self-acceptance in the face of adversity. Shirin: But, like, a lot of, like, you know, it's when you actually, like, think about the plot itself, which they've they've kind of peppered in a little bit more into this movie to make it a bit longer, it was very long. It was very long. Yes. The first this is like I said, they've split it into 2 bits. This is part 1. It was 2 hours and 40 minutes long. These themes resonate deeply with contemporary audiences, particularly in an era where issues of social justice and individual identity are at the forefront of public discourse. By presenting a nuanced and empathetic portrayal of characters who have been historically villainized or marginalized, Wicked encourages viewers to question their assumptions and embrace the complexity of the human experience. Conclusion: The Magic Lives On As we eagerly await the release of Wicked: Part 2, it's clear that the magic of this beloved story is as potent as ever. Through its stunning visuals, incredible performances, and timeless themes, the film adaptation of Wicked has proven itself a worthy successor to the Broadway musical and a testament to the enduring power of the Oz universe. Whether you're a longtime fan of the musical or a newcomer to the world of Elphaba and Galinda, Wicked is a must-see cinematic event that will leave you spellbound. As the film casts its enchanting spell over a new generation of viewers, one thing is certain: the magic of Oz will continue to captivate and inspire audiences for generations to come. Alexandra Billings is redefining what is possible for our community. Before making a name for herself in the Chicago theatre scene and landing her breakout role in the TV show, Transparent, Alexandra was a showgirl and sex worker struggling with addiction. "I ate, I breathed oxygen, I had sex, and I did drugs, all with great, reckless abandon." There is zero precedent for Alexandra's remarkable career—she is currently starring in The Conners on ABC and just completed a run as Madame Morrible in Wicked on Broadway—and she joins us on the podcast to talk about recording it all in her new memoir, This Time For Me. This is part of our new LGBTQ+ Elders Project. Click here to listen to our recent interview with the 87-year-old trans elder, Barbara Satin. She also discusses her college years at Illinois State University, where she first met the team who would become the founders of Steppenwolf; why after graduation she decamped for Minnesota; when the invitation to join Steppenwolf actually came; why she didn't journey to New York for the famed production of “Balm in Gilead”; her directing debut with John Guare's “Lydie Breeze”; her extended tenure in the original production of “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” and the brief Broadway run of “The Rise and Fall of Little Voice”; whether she has the opportunity at Steppenwolf to ask for plays to be done specifically based on her interest; why the company seems to have so many meetings and how they've sustained that over the years; her reasons for initially declining the role of Mattie Faye, written by Tracy Letts with her in mind, in “August: Osage County”, as she sets the record straight about whether or not the company resisted bringing the show to New York; the remarkable experience of returning to “August” for its final performance at the last minute, playing the role she created for a single performance with a company of actors she didn't know, including Phylicia Rashad, why she's only in recent years begun appearing in roles outside of Steppenwolf; and how long we can expect her to stay in the magical world of "Wicked".

"Bye Bye Birdie"'s domineering mom, Jayne Houdyshell, talks about finding the good in meddling Mae Peterson, who she calls "Archie Bunker in a mink coat" and whether she'd ever appeared in "Birdie" previously during her career, which has spanned some 300 shows (though only 15 in New York). She also describes growing up as a child on a Kansas farm; her first stage appearance as the mother in "Enter Laughing" (at age 14); finding her way to a conservatory in Detroit staffed largely by English acting teachers; starting her career by moving to Iowa where she was part of literally building the Old Creamery Theatre; her move to New York -- which precipitated a 20 year career working in regional theatres across the country, despite having no agent or manager; her sudden discovery by the New York theatre community in Lisa Kron's "Well"; how her appearance in "Hello Dolly" in the early 80s led to her appearance as Madame Morrible in "Wicked" on Broadway, what she thought when director Leigh Silverman asked her to play a child in "Coraline", and why she'd like to sing more on stage -- but we shouldn't be looking for her cabaret act anytime soon. Original air date - November 16, 2009.
