Michael and David speak of many things ... part of the reason they always seem to have so much fun. Among other things Michael speaks of how he manages to invite "the muses" and keeps his art both open and discreet at the same time. He also speaks of his work as musical composer for the brand new Disney series, Star Wars: The Acolyte. I always have speaking with Michael: our times always feel rich and multi-dimensional.2023 Pulitzer Prize-winning and Emmy- and Grammy-nominated composer Michael Abels is best known for his genre-defying scores for the Jordan Peele films GET OUT, US and NOPE. The score for US won a World Soundtrack Award, the Jerry Goldsmith Award, a Critics Choice nomination, multiple critics awards, and was named “Score of the Decade” by The Wrap. Both US and NOPE were shortlisted for the Oscar for Best Original Score. In 2022, Abels' music was honored by the Vancouver International Film Festival, the Middleburg Film Festival, and the Museum of the Moving Image. NOPE was awarded Best Score for a Studio Film by the Society of Composers & Lyricists. Other recent projects include the films BAD EDUCATION, NIGHTBOOKS, and the docu-series ALLEN v. FARROW. Current releases include CHEVALIER (Toronto Intl Film Festival) and LANDSCAPE WITH INVISIBLE HAND (Sundance 2022), his second collaboration with director Cory Finley. Upcoming projects include THE BURIAL (Amazon), and a series for Disney Plus.Abels' creative output also includes many concert works, including the choral song cycle AT WAR WITH OURSELVES for the Kronos Quartet, the Grammy-nominated ISOLATION VARIATION for Hilary Hahn, and OMAR, an opera co-composed with Grammy-winning recording artist Rhiannon Giddens. The New York Times named OMAR one of the 10 Best Classical Performances of 2022 and said, “What Giddens and Abels created is an ideal of American sound, an inheritor of the Gershwins' “Porgy and Bess” but more honest to its subject matter, conjuring folk music, spirituals, Islamic prayer and more, woven together with a compelling true story that transcends documentary.”Abels other concert works have been performed by the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Los Angeles Master Chorale and many others. Some of these pieces are available on the Cedille label, including DELIGHTS & DANCES, GLOBAL WARMING and WINGED CREATURES. Recent commissions include EMERGE for the National Symphony and Detroit Symphony, and a guitar concerto BORDERS for Grammy-nominated artist Mak Grgic.Abels is co-founder of the Composers Diversity Collective, an advocacy group to increase visibility of composers of color in film, gaming and streaming media.https://michaelabels.com/

Editors - Glenn Garland ACE, Bob Ducsay ACE, Paul Swain, Shaheed Qaasim The POKER FACE editing team of Garland, Ducsay, Qaasim and Swain might sound like a formidable name for a law firm, but their real talents lie in making a great "howcatchem" show with noted director and series creator, Rian Johnson. POKER FACE is a murder mystery series stylized as a character-driven, case-of-the-week mystery, with each episode adapting the inverted detective story format popularized by COLUMBO. The series centers around Charlie Cale, a casino worker with an innate ability to detect lies, traveling across the United States on the run from a casino boss following a suspicious death. Along the way, she encounters colorful characters and solves homicides in a variety of settings. GLENN GARLAND, ACE Accomplished editor Glenn Garland, ACE has over three decades of experience plying his skills on fan favorite tv series such as; STAN AGAINST EVIL, PREACHER and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, as well as feature films like; HALLOWEEN (2007), KING OF CALIFORNIA and the infamously unreleased THE FANTASTIC FOUR (1994). BOB DUCSAY, ACE Editor Bob Ducsay ACE has forged a tight collaborative bond with director Rian Johnson, going back to their first film, LOOPER (2012). And although POKER FACE is only their first tv series together, the quality of their feature work has already been recognized by audiences, critics and the industry at large. The pair were recently honored with the inaugural Variety Creative Collaborators Award at the 10th annual Middleburg Film Festival. PAUL SWAIN Rock drummer turned editor Paul Swain has brought his natural sense of rhythm to such projects as; THE UNICORN, THE EX-PM and THE MOODYS, for which he won an Australian Screen Editors ASE award in 2014. SHAHEED QAASIM Editor by day, swing dancer by night, Shaheed Qaasim's storytelling chops can be seen in shows like; MODERN FAMILY, THE WALKING DEAD: WORLD BEYOND and FUTURE MAN. Editing POKER FACE In our discussion with the POKER FACE editing team, we talk about: Paying homage to 70's procedurals Going from swing dancing to swings in tone Reinventing the audio and visual languages throughout Teaching your audience how to watch the show Holding off on temp score until you really need it The Credits Visit Extreme Music for all your production audio needs Learn about Avid's new Media Composer for Students program Hear Bob's interviews about his work on Rian Johnson's; KNIVES OUT, GLASS ONION and THE LAST JEDI. [Purloined from the good folks at ROTTEN TOMATOES] Benoit Blanc returns to peel back the layers in a new Rian Johnson whodunit. This fresh adventure finds the intrepid detective at a lavish private estate on a Greek island, but how and why he comes to be there is only the first of many puzzles. Blanc soon meets a distinctly disparate group of friends gathering at the invitation of billionaire Miles Bron for their yearly reunion. Among those on the guest list are Miles' former business partner Andi Brand, current Connecticut governor Claire Debella, cutting-edge scientist Lionel Toussaint, fashion designer and former model Birdie Jay and her conscientious assistant Peg, and influencer Duke Cody and his sidekick girlfriend Whiskey. WTOP Entertainment Reporter Jason Fraley celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Middleburg Film Festival, which kicks off tomorrow in Middleburg, Virginia. Here's one of his favorite conversations from 2018 when the festival screened Alfonso Cuaron's masterpiece "Roma." Mexican actress Yalitza Aparicio joined Jason via interpreter to discuss starring in her very first movie. (Theme Music: Scott Buckley's "Clarion")
A unique combination of education and experience brought Rachel Martin to launch Oceano Wines with husband and co-proprietor, Kurt Deutsch in 2016. A Virginia native, Martin was present at the inception of what is now considered one of that state's premier wine producers, Boxwood Estate Winery, in 2005. As Executive Vice President of Winery Operations, Martin's job was to oversee all facets of production, sales and marketing of Boxwood's award-winning whites, rosés and Bordeaux-style red blends. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston/Tufts University), Martin decided to make her love of wine a full-time vocation. She parlayed a degree in Viticulture and Enology from Napa Valley College into a spot in the prestigious Sensory Evaluation program at the University of Bordeaux School of Enology. And from there, Martin ushered in the very first wines at Boxwood, located in Middleburg, a bucolic area previously better known for horses than vines. Appreciating the distinctiveness of Middleburg's terroir, Martin spearheaded the move toward securing a coveted American Viticultural Area designation from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, the federal agency charged with evaluating the merits of all such applications. The petition she authored on behalf of the region was approved in 2012, making Middleburg Virginia the state's seventh AVA. Martin's forward thinking led directly to Middleburg having its own wine identity separate from the more generic Virginia designation, making her well suited to again start from scratch with Oceano Wines. None other than the esteemed author Jancis Robinson noted Martin's marketing savvy in her book “American Wine.” Martin is a member of Les Dames d'Escoffier International New York and Washington, D.C chapters and was the first woman to be inducted into the District of Columbia chapter of the International Wine & Food Society. A founding board member, she is also closely involved with the beverage/culinary aspects of the annual Middleburg Film Festival. Hear her here.
Last week, when the Academy announced Oscar nominations, hair and makeup designer Donald Mowat was on set in Spain, hard at work on his next project. When he found out that his fantastic work for Dune was nominated, it was the culmination of over 35 years of incredible creations being celebrated for the first time by his peers. For Mowat, an Academy member who over 20 years, he couldn't believe it happened, and still can't we I spoke with him recently, but takes a lot of pride in this honor because it's for a movie and team he truly loves. Known for working with actors Mark Wahlberg, Daniel Craig, Ryan Gosling, and Jake Gyllenhaal as their make-up artist, and being the department head for movies like First Man, The Fighter, Skyfall, Prisoners, Sicario, and Blade Runner 2049, Mowat's dedication to his craft has garnered praise by many in the industry, thus making him one of the most reliable artists working today in the business. On Dune, he and his team's collaboration built upon their director's vision to create unique looks for each character and the story they are telling. Between extensive research and detailed “vision boards,” they were able to successfully separate the work on this film from any of the previous versions of Dune we had seen before. I sat down with Mowat back at the 2021 Middleburg Film Festival, right before the release of the film and before he and his team have gone on to win award after award for their work on Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi spectacle. In this interview, I asked him about his reaction to being nominated for his first Oscar nomination, what Dune has meant to him, his team's work on the villainous Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård), dealing with weather difficulties on shooting on location in Budapest, and his excitement for working on Dune: Part 2. And while he's a little nervous about the outcome of the Oscars in late March, he is mostly excited to get back together with Denis and the team behind Dune one last time to celebrate their epic achievement. This audio interview, which runs 51m, might contain spoilers, so if you have not seen Dune, go watch the film and come back to this conversation. Dune is available to buy on Blur-ray and DVD, as well as to own or rent on all VOD platforms. It will return to HBO Max in March 2022.

When you go to a film festival, you never know who you are going to meet. At the opening night after party of the Middleburg Film Festival, I was introduced to one of the most talented, hardest working people of their or any craft, the great make-up artist Donald Mowat. What started as a meet and greet turned into multiple conversations over the span of four days, talking about not just his work and the festival, but every other topic in between. Thus was the case when we sat down for a conversation at the Salamander Resort and discussed his extraordinary work. In a career spanning over 35 years, Mowat has created some of the most iconic looks for some of the most celebrated films in that time span. His highlighted work as a department head includes 8 Mile, The Fighter, Skyfall, Nightcrawler, First Man. He's worked closely as a personal artist for actors such as Mark Wahlberg, Daniel Craig, and Jake Gyllenhaal. But his biggest collaborations of late have been his work with director Denis Villeneuve on Prisoners, Sicario, Blade Runner 2049, and their latest project, Dune. When talking with Mowat, there is an infectious glee that comes out of him when he talks about working with Villeneuve because of how proud he is of not just his work, but the work of all involved to make these movies successful. Though his stellar work has been celebrated by many over the decade, Mowat has yet to receive an Oscar nomination. With Dune however, that is bound to change at it is not only some of the bes make-up and hairstyling of the year, but it is some of Mowat's best work of his career. In the conversation below, we talked about his relationship with Villeneuve, how he came up with the looks of the different character groups in Dune, and what it would mean to Mowat, an Academy member since 1999, to be celebrated by his peers. The interview might contain some mild spoilers, so if you want to go in blind, see the film before listening to the conversation. Warner Brothers released Dune in theaters and on HBO MAX on Friday, October 22.
WTOP Entertainment Reporter Jason Fraley marks the return of the Middleburg Film Festival this weekend in Middleburg, Virginia by bringing back one of his favorite Middleburg interviews. In 2017, he spoke with Greta Gerwig upon the release of "Lady Bird," which made Gerwig the first woman to earn an Oscar nomination for her directorial debut.

Oceano Wines is a joint venture between Rachel Martin and Kurt Deutsch. Rachel has been growing grapes and producing wine for over 15 years at her family's winery and vineyard, Boxwood Estate Winery, in Middleburg, Virginia. Kurt is a Grammy-award-winning music, theatre and film producer, now working as a senior vice president for Warner Music Group. The two randomly met at the Middleburg Film Festival in October, 2014. They happened to be seated across from each other at a dinner prior to the screening of Kurt's feature film, "The Last Five Years.” From this chance meeting came a romantic relationship.Oceano Wines is distinguished by its unique location -- closer to the ocean than any other vineyard in the state of California -- its Sustainable in Practice certification, its uncompromising commitment to quality, and its approach to winemaking as "sculpting" rather than the traditional "painting." Since Oceano’s first release in 2018, they have attained distribution in New York, New Jersey, Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland, Texas, Delaware and California. In 2020 the goal is to increase their wholesale footprint and open a larger tasting room in San Luis Obispo. They plan to produce an Albarino in 2020.

Previews of Just Mercy, Atlantics, Waves, Harriet and Clemency. Join Subrina Wood the Cinnamon Cinephile and this week's guest expert Cynthia Rosenberry, Esq. as they discuss five incredible soon to be released films recently shown at the Middleburg Film Festival in October . Although the scenarios are as varied as the time periods, all five films have at their core the resilence of the Black Family and the need for it for black people surviving in America. The films cover the racism in criminal justice system, immigration from the point of view of the ones left behind, coping with the stress of chasing the America dream, the historical narrative of slavery, and the horrors of carrying out executions. It's a wide shot of America today. Ms. Roseberry earned her Bachelor of Science from Wilberforce University. She earned her Juris Doctor from Georgia State University College of Law. During the Obama administration, Cynthia Roseberry served as Project Manager of the historic Clemency Project 2014. Often referred to as the nation’s largest law firm of nearly 4,000 lawyers, it provided pro bono support to more than 36,000 applicants for presidential clemency. She has taught and practiced criminal defense law for more than two decades. A member of the Charles Colson Taskforce, a blue ribbon Congressionally appointed panel empaneled to examine the federal prison system, she currently chairs the NACDL taskforce on predictive policing. Her TedX talk given from inside a prison can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfAr8tlx0HY&t=3s Host: Subrina Wood www.cinnamoncinephile.com

So it’s with great anticipation that we breakdown the nominations for the 2019 Gotham Awards to begin the show. Will Hustlers, The Farewell & Waves gain momentum? Or will Marriage Story start to build its resume? Should we just be happy to enjoy the moment for some of these films? Or do we start to notice some early storylines to this season? But the Gotham’s aren’t the only noms to discuss. We cover the British Independent Film Awards, & there are best comedy finalists for the European Film Awards with a few Oscar connections to be made. Then we discuss how the campaign trails all seem to stop at the Governors Awards, pay tribute to the worthy recipients, and then we enjoy the early buzz from first screenings of Little Women. Mike1 doubles down on his takes regarding the Middleburg Film Festival, where they called the 2019 year in film the very best of the century. Rome picks an unlikely winner for its audience award, and the Producers Guild could be signifying a major change in perception regarding Netflix. Then we cover 4 Oscar Trailers for Les Miserables, The King, The Aeronauts, and Waves. It’s another crowded field of topics for this Oscar Race Checkpoint, and we look both forward & backward to many of the films, filmmakers, and stars in contention. We can’t help but compare everything to Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and we look forward to doing so for well, EVER. The Middleburg Film Festival is going on this weekend and I talked w/ the founder and executive director, Sheila Johnson and Susan Koch, about what you can expect to see at one of my favorite fests! I’ll post the after show segment I had with Nick in which he gave some great tips on how he addresses PR & Marketing with his career on Monday. Ariel gave me the goods on what you can expect to see at the festival taking place in Reston next week. But first, friend of the show and Epic Film Guy, Bryan Loy, stops by to give his thoughts on Halloween, which hits theaters this weekend. On this edition of the Cinema Clash: SUBURBICON takes Coen Bros material into dark territory; THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE does a serviceable job exploring PTSD among war veterans; WONDERSTRUCK delivers a double dose of Julianne Moore; THE PARIS OPERA fails to sing, while another French doc, FACES PLACES is très bien! I've been busy the last couple of weeks but it hasn't been for nothin'. Last weekend I attended the Middleburg Film Festival for the fifth time in its five-year history, and spent time chatting with Greta Gerwig about her directorial debut, LADY BIRD, starring Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf. The semi-autobiographical film follows a Sacramento girl as she prepares for college and leaving the nest, while dealing with a complicated relationship with her mother.I'm joinied by fellow BFCA member Tim Gordon. Tune in and enjoy!
Retail Therapy Yes, we are well aware the Hallmark Channel's Countdown to Christmas Movie Marathon begins on Friday, October 27 but, believe it or not, we don't even mention it on this week's episode. Instead, guest co-host Rob Shade returns to talk to George about the California fires, retail etiquette, Disneyland's Animation Academy, Battle of the Sexes, and some television shows. Next week: Middleburg Film Festival 2017. Please join us...and invite your friends this week and every week. You never know who you'll meet or what you'll learn on The George and Tony Entertainment Show.
Cinema Royale has been away for far too long while I dealt with film festivals and illnesses, which usually go hand-in-hand for me, but I'm back in time to talk about one of the awards season's biggest films. Tim Gordon join me to discuss Moonlight, the long-awaited second feature from Barry Jenkins. It's a film that is kicking all kinds of ass on the indie scene and could make an even bigger splash if there's an Oscars push behind it.Finally, Tim and I will look at Inferno, the third (and final?) Dan Brown adaptation from Ron Howard and Tom Hanks. Plus, I'll pick Tim's brain on the best movies he saw at the Middleburg Film Festival which was held last week.
