We accomplish our mission through education and awareness to promote safe skiing and snowboarding behaviors. The Foundation was started as a result of a life changing collision and a desire to ensure that these types of collisions never happen again. Since 2016, we have been creating a social movement among skiers and snowboarders with the “Ride Another Day” campaign. Snow Angel Foundation, founded in 2023, is the vehicle that will expand this campaign and transform the culture of skiing and snowboarding into a safety-oriented community. Partner with us so we can all Ride Another Day!The “life changing collision” referred to above resulted in the death of this little girl, Elise Johnson, in 2010:Why I interviewed themThe first time I saw this, I felt like I got punched:I was skiing Snowbird, ground zero for aggressive, full-throttle skiing. The things you see there. The terrain invites it. The bottomless snow enables it. The cultish battle cries of packed-full tram cars demand it. Snowbird is a circus, an amphitheater, a place that scares the s**t out of anyone with a pulse. There aren't many beginners there. Or even intermediates. You're far more likely to smash your face into a rock than clip some meandering 8-year-old's tails when you drop into Silver Fox.But the contrast between that mountain and that message was powerful. For a subset of skiers, every ski day must be this sort of ski day, every run a showcase of their buckle-bending, torque-busting snow arcs. “Out of My Path, Mortals. You are all just traffic cones around which I dance. Admire me!” And it's like damn bro how are you single? That ski behaviors aren't transferable from High Baldy to Baby Thunder is a memo that too many skiers have yet to receive. Is anyone else tired of this? Of World Cup trials on blue groomers? Of the social media braggadocio and bravado about skiing six times the speed of light? Of knuckleheads conflating speed with skill? When I talk about The Brobots, this is a big part of what I mean: the sense of entitlement to do as they please with shared space, without regard for the impact their actions could have on others.I hope one or two of these people will listen to this podcast. And I hope they will stop threading the Buttercup Runout back to the Carebear Quad as though they were navigating an X-Wing through an asteroid belt. Speed is a big part of skiing's appeal. The power and adrenaline of it, the thrill. But there are places on the bump where it's appropriate to tuck and fly, and places where it just isn't. And I wish more of us knew the difference. What we talked aboutElise just “had a lot of light”; being a ski family; an awful Christmas Eve at Hogadon Basin; waking up six weeks later; recovering from grief; why the family kept skiing; transforming pain into activism; slow the F down Brah; who's doing a good job on safety; ski industry opposition to injury- and death-reporting regulations; and what we learned from the mass adoption of helmets.Podcast NotesOn couples on the podcastI mentioned I've hosted several husband-wife combinations on the podcast, mostly the owners of ski areas:* Plattekill, New York owners Laszlo and Danielle Vajtay* Paul Bunyan, Wisconsin owners TJ and Wendy Kerscher* West Mountain, New York owners Sara and Spencer MontgomeryOn Antelope ButteThe Johnsons' local is Antelope Butte, a little double-chair bump in northern Wyoming:On Snowy RangeThe Johnsons also spent time skiing Snowy Range, also in Wyoming:On Hogadon BasinThe incident in question went down on the Dreadnaught run at Hogadon Basin, a 600-vertical-foot bump 20 minutes south of Casper, Wyoming:On 50 First DatesBy her own account, Kelli's life for six weeks went about like this:On the Colorado Sun's research on industry opposition to safety-reporting requirementsFrom April 8, 2024:[13-year-old] Silas [Luckett] is one of thousands of people injured on Colorado ski slopes every winter. With the state's ski hills posting record visitation in the past two seasons — reaching 14.8 million in 2022-23 — it would appear that the increasing frequency of injuries coincides with the rising number of visits. We say “appear” because, unlike just about every other industry in the country, the resort industry does not disclose injury data. …Ski resorts do not release injury reports. The ski resort industry keeps a tight grasp on even national injury data. Since 1980, the National Ski Areas Association provides select researchers with injury data for peer-reviewed reports issued every 10 years by the National Ski Areas Association. The most recent 10-year review of ski injuries was published in 2014, looking at 13,145 injury reports from the 2010-11 ski season at resorts that reported 4.6 million visits. The four 10-year reports showed a decline in skier injuries from 3.1 per 1,000 visitors in 1980-81 to 2.7 in 1990-91 to 2.6 in 2000-01 to 2.5 in 2010-11. Snowboarder injuries were 3.3 in 1990, 7.0 in 2000 and 6.1 in 2010.For 1990-91, the nation's ski areas reported 46.7 million skier visits, 2000-01 was 57.3 million and 2010-11 saw a then all–time high of 60.5 million visits. …The NSAA's once-a-decade review of injuries from 2020-21 was delayed during the pandemic and is expected to land later this year. But the association's reports are not available to the public [the NSAA disputes this, and provided a copy of the report to The Storm; I'll address this in more detail in an upcoming, already-recorded podcast with NSAA president Kelly Pawlak].When Colorado state Sen. Jessie Danielson crafted a bill in 2021 that would have required ski areas to publish annual injury statistics, the industry blasted the plan, arguing it would be an administrative burden and confuse the skiing public. It died in committee.“When we approached the ski areas to work on any of the details in the bill, they refused,” Danielson, a Wheat Ridge Democrat, told The Sun in 2021. “It makes me wonder what it is that they are hiding. It seems to me that an industry that claims to have safety as a top priority would be interested in sharing the information about injuries on their mountains.”The resort industry vehemently rebuffs the notion that ski areas do not take safety seriously.Patricia Campbell, the then-president of Vail Resorts' 37-resort mountain division and a 35-year veteran of the resort industry, told Colorado lawmakers considering the 2021 legislation that requiring ski resorts to publish safety reports was “not workable” and would create an “unnecessary burden, confusion and distraction.”Requiring resorts to publish public safety plans, she said, would “trigger a massive administrative effort” that could redirect resort work from other safety measures.“Publishing safety plans will not inform skiers about our work or create a safer ski area,” Campbell told the Colorado Senate's Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee in April 2021.The Sun also compiles an annual report of deaths at Colorado ski areas. On helmet cultureProblems often seem intractable, the world fossilized. But sometimes simple things change so completely, and in such a short period of time, that it's almost impossible to imagine the world before. I was 19, for example, the first time I used the internet, and 23 when I acquired its evil cousin, the cellphone (which would not be usefully linked to the web for about another decade). In our little ski world, the thing-that-is-now-ubiquitous-that-once-barely-existed is helmets. As recently as the 1990s, you likely weren't dropping a bucket on your skull unless you were running gates on a World Cup circuit. It's not that we didn't know about them – helmets have been around since, like, the Bronze Age. But nobody wore them. Nobody. Then, suddenly, everyone did. Or, well, it seemed sudden, though it's surprising to see that, as recently as the 2002-03 ski season, only around 25 percent of skiers bothered to strap on a helmet:I was a late adopter when I first wore a helmet in 2016. And when I finally got there, I realized, hey, this thing is warm. It also came in handy when I slammed the back of my head into a downed tree at Jay Peak last March.I don't have hard stats on helmet usage going back to the 1990s, but check out this circa 1990s casual ski day vid at an unidentified U.S. mountain:I counted one helmet. On a kid. To underscore the point, here's a circa 1990s promo for Steamboat Ski Patrol, which captures the big-mountain crew rocking knit caps and goggles:The Storm explores the world of lift-served skiing year-round. Rachel's college path was full of twists and turns and now she's helping her daughter, Zoe, on her own journey of self-discovery so she can make informed choices about her future. Zoe struggled with the traditional college path, initially attending college but deciding to take a semester off after a bout with mono and realizing she wasn't fully committed to the college route.  It's so important to allow young adults to take time to explore their options, especially in a society where there's immense pressure to have everything figured out by 18. Reflecting on her own experience as a first-generation student and how her experiences shaped her approach to guiding her daughters, Rachel uses My Path 101, a platform she created, to help students uncover their true passions and career aspirations before committing to a major.  Whether you're a student choosing a path or an adult redefining your career, remember that learning is a lifelong journey—keep exploring your identity and passions. Quotes “She was never really 100% excited and sold on going to college right away. She didn't know at the time what she wanted to do, and she was feeling like college might be a waste of time, and we, my husband and I really encouraged her to take a year off and figure that out.” “Kids at 18, 19 years old, it's a lot of pressure for them. They feel a lot of pressure to know what they want to do the rest of their lives.” “I was a first gen college kid. Actually, my parents did not go to college.” “I had really wanted to be a lawyer, so I applied to 10 law schools that ran the gamut from like, super safety school, the super reach school. I had great recommendations. I did okay on the LSAT, not great, but like, certainly good enough to get into my safety schools, and I didn't get into one school. And I was crushed, totally crushed. Oh, wow. So I definitely felt that identity crisis.”  “I just wanted to help kids figure out what they wanted to study in in school.” “That was the beginning of my own journey that certainly, you know, as I look back with like, a lot of twists and turns. It was no straight line by any means.” “I think college prices are over inflated, having been through the application process now with with Zoe, what I found a lot of schools do is they do inflate their prices, and then they give you a scholarship to kind of normalize their price.” “My Path is taking what we do on the personal branding side of our work at Brand ID and providing it to students, high school or college students, in a way that they can kind of self navigate and better understand themselves.”  “Why can't we take what we're doing in personal branding and apply it to to high school and college kids, and save them a little time and money by doing some of this introspective work before they actually determine their major?”

As a CEO, I initially focused on owning the business rather than running it, thinking like an investor instead of prioritizing the CEO's role and setting the vision and values. However, I soon realized that stepping back too much left me feeling bored and the business running but not growing. MWH 427 : She called me an “attention seeker”. How I deal with personal criticism. In this week's episode, I'm taking you on a deeply personal journey through the heart of being labeled "too much" or "attention seeker." It's a story about my own experiences with criticism, the lessons learned, and how I've come to embrace my truth with more love and courage than ever before. Join me as I share insights from my path of self-discovery, resilience, and the transformative power of love over negativity. LISTEN NOW In this episode, you'll discover: Criticism as a Mirror: I'll share why I believe that when someone criticizes you, it often reflects their own insecurities and internal struggles, not your worth. My Path to Understanding: Dive deep with me into my journey of understanding the psychology behind why people criticize and how this knowledge has empowered me to live more freely. The Power of Shining Bright: Hear about the moments I chose to shine even brighter in the face of attempts to dim my light, and why it's so important for all of us to do the same. The Complexities of Growth: I'll open up about the bittersweet aspects of personal growth, from the joy of expanding my self-expression to the sadness of leaving behind what no longer serves me. A Message from My Heart to Yours: Learn why moving forward with love and embracing your authentic self not only empowers you but also invites others to shine their light alongside you. She called me an “attention seeker”. How I deal with personal criticism. Some memorable moments from this episode: "Criticism has taught me more about the critic's world than my own. It's a lesson in empathy and understanding, not a directive for my life." "Discovering the psychology behind criticism was a game-changer for me. It shifted how I see the world and my place in it." "Choosing to shine, especially when it's hard, has been one of my most powerful decisions. It's about claiming my space and inviting others to do the same." "Growth is a beautiful, complex journey. There's joy in expansion and a certain melancholy in moving on. Both are valuable." "To everyone listening, know this: Your light is needed. Embracing who you are is the first step in a journey of endless possibilities and shared brilliance." Join me as I reflect on these lessons, share stories from my heart, and explore how we can all live more authentically and supportively in a world that sometimes seems intent on dimming our shine. This is more than just my story; it's an invitation to you to find your voice, claim your space, and celebrate your unique light. Have you experienced something similar? With gut-wrenching honesty and earnest introspection, Rosa Miller opens up about the highs and lows of her upbringing, her internal struggle over conflicting beliefs, and how she drew the courage to leave her family behind in pursuit of a brighter future. Set off on the path to spiritual and emotional liberation with Rosa as she vividly describes various facets of the Amish lifestyle. Hold her heart in your hands as she bravely discusses the molestation she endured and how she stood up against it to protect her younger female family members. What makes a warrior? Tune in to our show today to hear from my guest, Lisa Guerrero, chief investigative correspondent for Inside Edition, former sports reporter and anchor, actor, and now best-selling author, “Warrior, My Path to Being Brave.” And wow, has Lisa been brave, and a trailblazer, too. We'll talk about some of the abuses highlighted in her book from bosses to colleagues, some accusing her of using her cleavage to nail a job in sports reporting at a time when women were usually in the stands and not on the field. They were wrong. Lisa is smart, resourceful, willing to take chances, and bounces back. And that's a true warrior. We'll ask her about one of THE most difficult moments I've ever heard of while reporting LIVE on the field, suffering a miscarriage, and she kept working. And she'll explain why, the answer framed in a common story we often hear about, abuse. Lisa's story is absolutely incredible, one I can relate throughout many moments in the book. She says she wrote this for all the future “Little Lisa's” out there, so they can be brave. Bravo! Please join us on all video and audio platforms of Deborah KOBYLT LIVE, and please invite your friends, too. Thanks for joining me, Lisa. Her book, The Planet Alzheimer's Guide: 8 Ways the Arts Can Transform the Life of Your Loved One and your Own, and her public speaking engagements and presentations, illustrate how the arts can bring joy and dignity to both those with this disease and their care partners. In the words of the author, “Let the creative spirits soar!” Her public speaking and arts advocacy focuses on the benefits of engaging in the arts by those with Alzheimer's and other dementias and people of all ages. Mary is a member of AlzAuthors.Book Description: The Planet Alzheimer's Guide: 8 Ways the Arts Can Transform the Life of Your Loved One and Your Own If the ability to connect and communicate with your loved one has diminished, this how-to book offers step-by-step alternative ways to creatively engage and interact through arts activities, so you can share quality time together with this person whom you love. Even if you've never tried to paint, sing, dance, tell a story, read or write a poem, this easy-to-use guide will show you how to discover the richest relationship experience possible through simple ways of acknowledging the creative spirit that is in all of us, even in those with Alzheimer's or Dementia. If you are thinking, my loved one (or I) can't do this, consider the possibility before closing the door to what can be an experience like no other. By letting go of traditional means of interacting, you will discover unconventional ways to spend time with this person in your life through creative yet dignified shared experiences. My decades of successfully working through arts engagement with persons with Alzheimer's or Dementia has led me to write this book so you, too, can find that place between you and your loved one where the creative spirit emerges and extraordinary connections begin. This book includes: Preface: How I Entered the World of Planet Alzheimer's – My Path to This Guidebook, Introduction: What is Arts & Alzheimer's? A Key to Communication that Anyone Can Explore, Painting and Drawing on Memories, Language of Music and Movement: Songs, Sing-Alongs, & Instrumental Music, The 4 R's: Rhyme, Rhythm, Recitation, Recall - Poetry and Storytelling, A Picture's Worth a Thousand Words: Photos, Art Books and Visits to Museums, Engaging Family and Friends of All Ages: An Intergenerational Approach, All Together Now: Including Support and Medical Staff in the Arts Experience, Displaying and Celebrating Art - Creations by Those with Alzheimer's or Dementia, Caring for Yourself Through Art While Caring for Your Loved One, Epilogue, More Photos of Paintings, Drawings, and Arts Activities. This illustrated guide contains numerous color photos of images of artwork created by people with Alzheimer's or Dementia. You'll also see many color photos of these artists at work on their own, with my guidance, and photos of their work on exhibition.

Twenty-three years and five graduates later, he hopes to share some of the lessons he's learned along the way to help other families enjoy the most successful, satisfying, and Christ-centered home school possible. His mission is to help homeschooling families learn, live, and defend the Christian faith. This is accomplished in part through his work as president of Apologia Educational Ministries, the #1 publisher of Creation-based science and Bible/worldview curriculum with more than eighty #1 awards for over twelve years in a row from homeschool organizations and media. Davis is passionate about his family. He married Rachael in 1986, and God has blessed them with seven children and two grandchildren. So far, five students have graduated from their home school. Of those, three are college graduates (two of whom are married), two are currently in college, and two are still at home. Davis and his family live in Waxhaw, North Carolina, where they enjoy the homeschooling adventure of a lifetime, complete with roller-coaster twists and turns and the occasional lazy river ride. Davis isn't a perfect husband or father, but he loves being with his wife throughout the day and immediately available to handle disciplinary and training matters or to experience an extraordinary Deuteronomy 6 moment in the course of an ordinary day. He has been honored to speak in over thirty states and seven countries as an advocate for home education. Additionally, he served twelve years on the board of North Carolinians for Home Education (NCHE) and nine years as the North Carolina Ambassador for the Home School Foundation. He is also a founding board member of Homeschool Now USA. Davis is the author of five illustrated children's books designed to instill a biblical worldview. Good Morning, God is based on Deuteronomy 6, A Light for My Path is an ABC book based on Psalm 119, In the Beginning is based on the Creation account in Genesis, Psalms to Know Early, is based on…you guessed it…Psalms, and his latest: Truths to Know Early. She has shared Yoga as a Recovery Pathway in several Recovery Conferences over the last 20 years. She has also served as the Director of the Ayurveda Programs at the Sivananda Ashram in California since 2003 and is a professional member of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA). In this episode, she shares her journey of healing and recovery from addiction. She also talks about the issues of Health Care regarding addiction, how she used Yoga to heal from alcoholism, and the emotional and mental health issues surrounding addiction. Personal story being a child of an alcoholic,  becoming alcoholic myself in my teens,  finding yoga in my mid-20s,  a few suicide attempts,  and losing my mother to alcoholism when I was 32 years old.  Shortly after, I was fired from a job I was headhunted into. Then I “did a geographic”— moving from London to Lake Tahoe to take a year off and sort myself out. But “wherever you go, there you are,” and after nine months in the United States, my new life was in shambles. I once again felt desperate, but this time I took myself to a meeting of AA (Alcoholics Anonymous)  18 months sober, allopathic medical professionals offered me antidepressants for their diagnosis of clinical depression Book Yoga of Recovery, Integrating Yoga and Ayurveda with Modern Recovery Tools for Addiction - YoR works with people who have a sex addiction, eating disorders, codependents with no substance abuse, and others where substance abuse is present but it is not the primary presenting issue. I work with people 16–84 years old; those who are members of 12-step programs and those who are not. We offer help to those who want to come off the pharmaceuticals they have been prescribed but find they are now dependent on them. What you'll get out of tuning in: We talk about the roots of the addictive behaviors: the main causative factor is the ego, the idea of having disconnection from spirit, disconnection from life. How Ayurveda is a foundational behavioral health care system that can help people thrive in long-term (emotional) sobriety spread addiction - it's not just about alcohol and drugs! addiction is treated by the acute care model but needs a continuum of care from recovery-oriented systems of care - a chronic care model - and overall CARE rather than CURE which tends to be mainly at the level of pharmaceuticals and surgery - but this does not work so well for problems of addiction article: Ayurveda Journal of Health  I truly believe Ayurveda is the best system of behavioral health care for all modern chronic diseases. sobriety, service, and fellowship (the three pillars of 12-step principles) Addiction is a bio-pscyhosocial-emotional-cultural-economic-political, etc. “character defects” that underlie all addictions—the one that is most ubiquitous being our tendency toward codependency—our ability to see in the other what is wrong but not be able to see or deal with it in ourselves “Svastha”— and addiction UT and “Svastha” This was very interesting to me as it fits with what I'd been told in AA—that addiction was a “spiritual malady” and I was “spiritually sick.” Ayurveda describes all diseases as “forgetting our true nature is spirit.”  Dr. Harikrishnan, Medical Director of Vaidyagram Ayurvedic Clinic in Coimbatore, India, states, "Addiction arises when we lose the purpose of our life. Vedic literature tells us we only get a human birth after several thousand other lives. The purpose of human life is to evolve, to go to a further level. When you have a bigger purpose, this guides you better in how to live each day. PK and recovery to reset cellularly. Dr. Harikrishnan, “We recommend cleansing the body through PanchaKarma-this eliminates the toxins and allows you a break from the circumstances-time away to cleanse and calm down, introduce new practices, change your lifestyle, and feel the effects of the new habits. It takes three months for food to go to the seventh tissue; within three months, our body is completely changed. Hence it is ideal for spending a minimum of six weeks to three months in a staged recovery process.” YoR offers Ayurvedic Pancha karma retreats in India.  Out-of-pocket spending vs. what is covered by gov't or insurance. The first stage is the deep cleanse; the second stage is learning both the principles and tools of Yoga and Ayurveda to help us make better decisions, and the third stage gives time to offer service to the others-the best way to get out of self. This increases confidence and self-esteem and allows us to share the gifts of our recovery with others. We then go back to live our lives knowing that we have a purpose, feeling calmer and stronger, knowing our capacity, pacifying Vata by eating properly and applying oil daily.
