Using your auto-injector is NOT like pulling the pin on a grenade! In this episode, we share our experiences with anaphylaxis and how we let fear cloud our understanding of the relief brought by proper treatment, including epinephrine. Anaphylaxis can be scary, but it doesn't have to be. Preparation is key. We discuss the steps we take and the tools we have in place for when a reaction hits. Join us for an open conversation on preparing for the worst case scenario. If you have a dairy allergy, it probably doesn't surprise you that it's one of the more complex common food allergies. While there are 25 proteins in milk (yes, you read that right!), only a handful have been shown to trigger antibody production against them. Now, remember that a dairy allergy is different from being lactose intolerant. Lactose intolerance is considered a non-allergic reaction to milk products that can lead to uncomfortable GI symptoms like bloating, gas, and diarrhea. Anaphylactic dairy allergy symptoms include hives, swelling, coughing, wheezing, nausea, and vomiting, and these usually manifest shortly after you eat the food containing dairy. BUT this is where it gets confusing. There are several non-IgE-mediated milk allergy symptoms that affect the gastrointestinal tract. These reactions are immune-mediated…which can make it really difficult to differentiate between lactose intolerance and a true milk products allergy. Dr. Stacy Silvers returns to the podcast to clear up some confusion surrounding the complexity of dairy allergy. He's a board-certified allergist specializing in environmental and food allergy diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. And he oversees the allergy program and protocols, and also leads the food allergy and oral immunotherapy (OIT) program at Aspire Allergy & Sinus. Dr. Silvers is considered an expert in the field of food allergy diagnosis and treatment and I'm THRILLED to share this interview with you! In This Episode: Are there specific milk proteins that cause dairy allergy symptoms? A1 casein vs A2 casein in dairy (which is better tolerated?) Can you have a dairy allergy to whey protein? Testing options to figure out a dairy allergy If you have a milk products allergy, are you only allergic to cow's milk? Can you stop dairy allergies? (OH BOY!) Dairy in topical products IF you have a dairy allergy Quotes “When you're looking at anaphylactic reactions to milk, there is a very, very high likelihood of there being cross-reactivity between cow's milk, goat, and sheep's milk. 90%, 95% of the time, if you react to cow's milk, you'll react to those other milks.” “What we find is the majority of infants or toddlers who have a milk allergy do have it resolved as they get older…It's roughly 50% will have it resolved by age six, according to one study. And it can oftentimes get better as the years go on after that.” Links Find Dr. Silvers online Follow Aspire Allergy on Instagram Healthy Skin Show ep. 269: Allergy Testing: Everything You Need To Know w/ Dr. Stacy Silvers Healthy Skin Show ep. 327: Demystifying Food Allergy Signs, Symptoms + Skin Rash w/ Dr. Ruchi Gupta Additional Research: Cow Milk Allergy Modulation of Milk Allergenicity by Baking Milk in Foods: A Proteomic Investigation Food Allergies and Cross-Reactivity
In part two of my conversation with Layton, she continues to share her journey of navigating the trauma of leaving a cult, bad therapy, the harmful effects of the trans medical industrial complex, and how she finally found wholeness.Missed part 1? Listen to episode 95 here.Layton opens up about her experience of undergoing synthetic testosterone as a female and the traumatic impact it had on her body and mind. We delve into the dangerous territory of misdiagnosis and the lack of consideration for her PTSD, dissociation, and other comorbidities by therapists and gender clinics. Layton shares her frustration at not being given the opportunity to explore healing from her trauma before being pushed towards medical gender transition. As the conversation unfolds, we explore the boundaries crossed by Layton's therapist and the power dynamics at play. How did her therapist so egregiously overlook her real needs? What countertransference issues on the part of the therapist might have contributed to this massive ethical breach? We touch on the sadistic element that may have influenced her therapist's actions and the flattery used to manipulate and groom Layton. We also discuss the importance of ethical boundaries in therapy and the potential harm caused by therapists who fail to manage their countertransference.Layton shares her journey of self-discovery and the pivotal moment when she started to question her decision to transition. Through somatic therapy, nervous system regulation, and healing her PTSD, she began to reconnect with her body and realized that she didn't have gender dysphoria. We explore the process of reconciling with her womanhood and the challenges she faced in finding her true identity.Layton is an Anthroposophical artist, Somatic practitioner, YouTuber, and detransitioner. Having left a religious cult, and then the social cult that is Gender Ideology, she is passionate about educating others about mental health, healing and spirituality in a way that heavily emphasizes self-trust and personal autonomy. While she doesn't consider herself to be an activist, she is vocal in regards to the medicalisation of children and vulnerable adults under the guise of "Gender Affirming Care.”Visit her website at PsychicSomatic.comX: @origina1ange1Psychic Somatic YouTube Channel00:00 Start[00:00:00] Trauma of synthetic testosterone.[00:07:36] The dangers of misinformed therapy.[00:10:16] Comorbidities and transitioning.[00:12:28] Medical prioritization and mental health.[00:16:41] Dissociation and identity building.[00:22:16] Sadistic elements in therapy.[00:25:12] Therapist-client boundaries and detransitioners.[00:29:36] Projection and vulnerability in therapy.[00:36:28] Lack of boundaries.[00:39:37] Faux sense of connection.[00:43:41] Detransitioning and self-discovery.[00:48:09] Identity and self-discovery.[00:52:13] Dissociation and Fragmentation.[00:56:36] Nervous system self-care.[01:02:31] Self-discovery and inner healing.[01:06:06] Histamine intolerance and allergies.[01:10:03] Anaphylactic symptoms and restrictions.[01:14:07] Hormonal effects of testosterone.[01:18:43] Unconditional love and boundaries.[01:22:06] Generational longing for unconditional love.[01:25:33] Esoteric Christianity and Anthroposophy.[01:30:10] Trauma and medical mistreatment.[01:35:11] Admitting mistakes and ego death.[01:40:11] Craving stability in your 30s.[01:44:09] Join my community. Food allergies could make even touching stuff scary. Can you really remove fear and anxiety from the allergy equation? Sarah Duda, the owner of Loving Nutritiously, was diagnosed with food allergies at just six weeks. Back then, her dad, who was giving her a bath like any parent, hadn't washed his hands with soap and water after eating cashews. In the moments that followed, she was covered in hives. Rushing to the emergency and getting a dose of epinephrine, turning positive for a skin graft test, staying away from peanuts, altering nuts, coconut, nutmeg, and other foods she's allergic to – is a sequence of events that describes her allergy life in a nutshell. As a certified nutrition coach who helps women manage their food anxieties, Sarah provides actionable tips to uncomplicate your life with allergies. She also shares how her children, who as yet, don't have major allergies, support her in the same. She also discusses what socializing, shopping, marriage, and daily life look like for a person with allergies! You'll also learn: >> What anaphylaxis looks like and how to deal with it. >> How Epipens help people with allergies >> Socializing despite the allergies – the precautions to take and how to let people know about your sensitivities and intolerances. >> Inviting and managing guests at home as a person with allergies. >> Finding a romantic partner who understands your health condition. >> Helping kids understand and adjust to your allergy concerns. >> Lessons to take away: If your gut tells you something feels unsafe to consume, don't use it. Even if the packaging says something different, don't eat it. Speak to the head of companies to learn if their products are safe for your consumption. >> Tip to help your kids with food allergies: Always keep safe snacks available around your children. This will reduce their tendency to consume something that's unhealthy for them when they're around children without the same allergies. Connect with Sarah! Bacteria aren't the only organisms developing resistance to today's pharmaceuticals. In this episode of the Clinician's Brief Partner Podcast, heartworm disease research scientist Molly Savadelis, PhD, talks with host Beth Molleson, DVM, about the changing landscape of heartworm disease and what recommendations veterinarians should be making to keep their patients protected from one of the companion animals' most infamous parasites.IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Use PROHEART 6 in dogs 6 months of age or older and PROHEART 12 in dogs 12 months of age or older. Do not administer to dogs that are sick, debilitated, underweight, have a history of weight loss, or to those previously found to be hypersensitive to the drug. Hypersensitivity reactions may occur in some dogs when PROHEART is administered alone or with vaccines. Anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions can result in death and should be treated immediately with the same measures used to treat hypersensitivity reactions to vaccines and other injectable products. Reported side effects in clinical trials included vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, anorexia, and hypersensitivity reactions. People should avoid inhalation, contact with eyes, or accidental self-injection. Certification is required before veterinarians and staff administer these products. On this episode of Food Allergy Talk, I welcome back our special guest, my oldest son, Stetson Horne. This time to talk all things Disneyland Resort and California Adventure. Stetson has been to Disneyland Resort, California Adventure, Walt Disney World, Epcot, and a Disney Cruise. He successfully visited all the parks and went on a cruise with peanut and shellfish allergy. However, between our last visit to Disneyland Thanksgiving of 2021, and our return trip end of January 2022 – Stetson was diagnosed with 7 new allergens: pecan, walnut, oat, garlic, sweet potato, watermelon and pear. We left on our most recent Disney trip not knowing if he would be able to eat at the parks at all, but were pleasantly surprised to find he could still enjoy many of his favorites, and even found some new favorites! Food Allergy Info Card referenced in this episode was made on www.vistaprint.com using the following verbiage (feel free to copy and use this verbiage), and then listed respective allergens:I have anaphylactic life-threatening food allergies to the following foods and should I come in contact with them would require emergency medical attention. This includes cross-contact. Freshly cleaned prep and cooking surface is appreciated as well as any utensils used to prepare and serve food. Thank you for helping me to dine here safely.(Insert own allergens)Listen online anytime: https://foodallergypi.com/the-food-allergy-talk-podcast/ or on any podcast player.

On this episode of The Food Allergy Talk Podcast, Lisa Horne interviews her son, Stetson, a 14-year-old teen with food allergies. Stetson was anaphylactic to peanuts and shellfish since he was just a baby. In the past 6-8 months of this podcast interview Stetson began having symptoms that appeared at first glance to perhaps mimic potential Celiac, Crohn's and Colitis, IBS or other potential digestive issues. We had no idea that what was lurking behind these symptoms were added anaphylactic food allergies that appeared over a decade since his original diagnosis. What was even more confusing is that they were similar to food allergies by way of symptom, but also appeared to be other issues. Listen into our experience detailed in hindsight to see what we learned as we navigated this new terrain, as well as the feelings and emotions that can go along with a new food allergy diagnosis. While Stetson has had anaphylactic food allergies since he was a toddler, Stetson is much more than his food allergy. He is a video gamer, plays both piano and guitar, plays golf, and has recently taken up archery. There may be some things that Stetson cannot eat, but he hasn't let his food allergies top him from living and enjoying life. Even with this latest curve ball adding an additional 7 allergens: pecan, walnut, oat, garlic, sweet potato, watermelon and pear.Listen to hear about his experience and finding the the silver lining living a life with food allergy, and making the most out of it. I'm Lisa Horne of Food Allergy P.I., host of the Food Allergy Talk podcast. I'm a holistic nutritionist, cookbook author, food allergy community advocate and blogger. I am married with 5 children ages 4, 6, 9, 11 and 14. We live on a small ranch in southeastern Arizona, where I homeschool all 5 of our children. I got involved in the food allergy community through support outreach and fundraising in 2009, following my oldest child's first anaphylactic reaction. Later in 2012 I initiated legislation to allow for stock epinephrine to be available for all students in Arizona schools. Later in 2013, that bill became State law. In 2018, I began focusing my energy on reaching out to the food allergy community through my blog, Food Allergy P.I., where I share my own experience caring for food allergies, travel, dining out, product finds, and recipe creation. Most recently, in 2021 I authored The Everything Nut Allergy Cookbook.Don't miss a future episode, subscribe to the Food Allergy Talk podcast, where we can meet to connect, uplift, empower, and succeed. Frances Castelli always dreamed of working with children, traveling, being a teacher, an artist and an author, and already she has accomplished all of these–although not in a traditional sense. With 3 children with anaphylactic food allergies, her kitchen became one big science experiment on what she could feed each child. This interview and her book “The Kitchen Alchemist,” share her family’s journey and her book is filled with delicious, allergy-safe recipes perfect for those living with food allergies.
In this episode we discuss how Alexandra has managed to juggle life as a “Mompreneur”. She discusses partnering with the number one skin care brand in North America, Rodan + Fields and running her own business, what keeps her motivated and helps her to stay on track as well as what drives her passion for health, beauty and skin care. But above all and most importantly, she speaks about raising a son with severe anaphylactic food allergies and the affect that it's had on their family's life. She says, “ You are given this diagnoses and sent out into the world. Now what? There should have been some sort of counselling offered and more support. I felt like a fish out of water, learning the do's and don'ts of allergies.” People often wondered how she kept her child safe and she realized there was a real need to help others understand what allergies mean and how lost and anxious you can feel in the beginning stages of an allergy diagnoses. Just recently Alexandra has created a blog to share her journey and provide tips and recipes that she has learned and created over the last four years. The advice that Alexandra brings for all parents, including those of children with allergies and those of children without is incredibly helpful. After interviewing Alexandra in this podcast, we have a whole new appreciation for how terrifying an allergy diagnoses can be and the importance of educating others to prevent cross contamination.
Synopsis Memorization is the fixing of information into your memory through sheer repetition. It's a necessary first step in learning. Memorization of the fundamental terms and concepts of a difficult or new topic will provide a strong foundation for a deeper understanding of the more difficult concepts that will follow with additional study. What You Will Learn In This Post 1. You'll learn what memorization is and why it is important to learning. 2. You'll learn ten tips that will help you set up an easy-to-follow studying system. 3. You'll learn about mnemonics and how quickly you can create them. Introduction Memorization is the fixing of information into your memory through sheer repetition. It's a necessary first step in learning. Memorization of the fundamental terms and concepts of a difficult or new topic will provide a strong foundation for a deeper understanding of the more difficult concepts that will follow with additional study. Learning a large, or difficult, or completely new subject, might seem overwhelming at first. We've all been there before. And most of us get through it ok. The trick is to just accept the fact that you need to get started as soon as possible, and that you must put in the study time necessary to learn the material. My wife Michele and I teach thousands of healthcare professionals each year. Most of them are expected to be able to quickly recall hundreds of essential dosages, formulas, and rules – all while under very stressful situations. We've learned that memorization is the fastest and most practical way to get our students started on their path to becoming great at their jobs. Memorization, along with schooling, self-study, continuing education classes, online training, on-the-job training, in-house classes, and mandatory certifications, all play a part in becoming very successful at almost anything. Here is a list of our favorite tips to memorize a topic and its essential facts: Tip # 1. Break The Material Down Into Smaller Parts Smaller bits of information will be much easier for your brain to hold onto. Make several lists. Work on memorizing these lists. Memorize a few facts, and then memorize a few more. Tip # 2. Study In Short Periods Over A Long Period Of Time Short bursts of study, fifteen or thirty minutes at a time, are much better and more productive than sitting there and studying for sixty or ninety minutes. Whenever you're sitting somewhere, a doctor's waiting room, for example, take out your study cards and read them. These short bursts of study periods can be very productive. Constantly doing this over many months is the surest way to get the information into your long-term memory. Tip # 3. Review The Material Frequently To get the new information from your short-term memory into your long-term memory you must review the material frequently. The more difficult the topic, and the less previous knowledge you have for a topic, the more frequently you must review the material. Some nights you should do a full study session on a subject. On the other nights, you can do a quick review. But always try to touch upon that particular subject at least once every twenty-four hours. Tip # 4. Do Not Cram Cramming is usually useless. Learning a new or difficult topic takes time. Days, weeks, months, and years, not minutes. It takes a lot of time to process information properly. Tip # 5. Use Mnemonic Devices And Catchy Puns And Phrases Mnemonics are a great memory device to help you memorize difficult information. Here is one I created to remember the stages of shock: “Not His lucky CHARMS”. Neurogenic, Hemorrhagic, Cardiogenic, Hypovolemic, Anaphylactic, Respiratory, Metabolic, Septic. Mnemonics can easily be created from a phrase, rhyme, or sentence. Tip # 6. Teach The Information To Another Person This is probably one of the surest ways to force yourself to thoroughly learn a topic. Get a family member or friend,
Here's what we thought we knew: IgA deficiency leads to anaphylactic transfusion reactions. Not so fast! Dr. Gerald Sandler from Georgetown University noticed something when he was in charge of one of the US national reference labs: Hardly anyone with true anaphylactic reactions actually had IgA deficiency and anti-IgA! There's more to the story, and Jerry is here to share it with us (including why it's still ok to look for IgA deficiency in these patients).

Our bodies are complicated systems that can react harshly to food, if we've developed a food sensitivity. Food sensitivities are more common than ever, partly because of the way our food is grown and manufactured, and the way it's jammed with additives and preservatives. So how do you know whether or not you have a food sensitivity? And even once it's identified, what do you do?

We report on a 33-year-old female patient with indolent systemic mastocytosis and urticaria pigmentosa who died of an anaphylactic reaction after a yellow jacket sting. As she had no history of previous anaphylactic sting reaction, there was no testing performed in order to detect hymenoptera venom sensitization. But even if a sensitization had been diagnosed, no venom immunotherapy (VIT) would have been recommended. It is almost certain that VIT would have saved her life and it is most likely that VIT is indicated in some patients with mastocytosis with no history of anaphylactic sting reaction. However, no criteria have been established in order to allow a selection of mastocytosis patients eligible for such a `prophylactic' VIT. Copyright (C) 2008 S. Karger AG, Basel.
