Standards The Georgia Professional Standards Commission unanimously voted to remove the words "diversity," "equity," and "inclusion" from the state's educator preparation rules, despite opposition from students, educators, and parents. Despite receiving numerous emails opposing the change, the commission maintains that their intent is to meet the needs of all students. Critics argue that words reflect intent and removing these terms has consequences. Last week Georgia Gwinnett College counselors traveled to Collins Hill High School to offer seniors at the school a unique opportunity — an instant decision on admission. Called Instant Decision Day, these events allow college hopefuls to meet with GGC admissions counselors, who evaluate their transcripts and help them fill out GGC application forms. Students who met GPA requirements are provided an instant admissions decision on the spot. Twenty-one students were admitted to GGC at the Collins Hill event, which was held on March 2. GGC has offered more than 50 Instant Decision Day events to schools in Gwinnett County and metro Atlanta since September with more to come, Lisa Boone, GGC's assistant director of admissions. Boone said the program has expanded this year to high schools as far east as Savannah and as far south as Valdosta. The school's future plans include expansion of the Instant Decision Day program to Georgia's border states. With the support of the University System of Georgia, GGC recently established a waiver so that students in states that border the Georgia will pay in-state tuition Piedmont Eastside Medical Center welcomed a new chief executive officer this week. The hospital, which is located in Snellville, announced on Wednesday that Larry Ebert became Eastside's new CEO on Monday. Ebert previously served as CEO at Piedmont Walton Hospital in Monroe for the last five years. He replaces Trent Lind, who had been Eastside's CEO for more than seven years but recently left to join Community Health Systems in Franklin, Tennessee. Ebert has been with the Piedmont system since 2017, when he became the executive director of strategic operations at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. He then became Piedmont Walton's CEO in 2018. During his time at Piedmont Athens, Ebert oversaw the planning and execution of strategic efforts, such as the coordination of a master facility plan as well as a key construction and renovation project on the hospital's main campus. And, during his time at Piedmont Walton, Ebert oversaw that hospital's integration into the Piedmont system; worked on the creation of a joint program between the hospital and the nursing program at Athens Technical College's Walton campus; recruited primary care and specialty clinicians; tripled the hospital's medical staff; and launched and expanded new service lines. Ebert earned his bachelor's degree from Tennessee Tech University and his Master of Healthcare Administration from Louisiana State University. He and his wife Jessica are the parents of triplets Gavin, Preston and Abigail. Sixteen Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine students and faculty members exchanged their Christmas holidays for a mission trip to Guatemala where they impacted the lives of almost 1,000 patients. First, second and third year DO students, along with a DO student from the PCOM South Georgia campus, staffed several clinics located near Antigua, some in remote mountainous areas. Donald Penney, MD, the chair of clinical education and a clinical professor of emergency medicine at PCOM Georgia, served as the chief medical officer for the trip arranged through International Medical Relief, a nonprofit mission organization headquartered in Colorado. According to first year DO student Alice Manning, the trip to Guatemala was “an amazing and eye-opening experience.” She explained that each clinic had several stations including triage, community education, health care and dentistry. In the community education area, Manning enjoyed informing patients about proper handwashing techniques and hygiene, along with providing information about diabetes and dentistry. Manning shared that she used many skills learned in medical school including taking patients' histories and vitals and using osteopathic manipulative medicine. She used OMM for neurologic motor exams, upper extremity range of motion tests, special tests for carpal tunnel syndrome, and diagnosing rotator cuff strains. She noted that a highlight of the trip was using a pocket ultrasound so a pregnant woman could see her baby for the first time. During the trip, the students' routine included debriefing sessions each day after clinics to discuss issues related to the day's work. Some of the students used their free day to hike Pacaya, an active volcano. Manning was fascinated to see a local cooking a pizza on top of lava at the volcano's peak. At the Southwest Gwinnett Chamber's First Friday breakfast for March the organization honored Norcross High School's Corbin Blum with its monthly Character Award. The award was created to recognize outstanding students whose attitudes and actions embody the organization's mission, passion, and commitment to excellence and community action. Blum serves as the Council Service Chair on the school's student leadership council and has been selected for several academic honors societies. He participates in karate, ultimate frisbee, band, and golf and serves as a camp counselor during the summers. He looks forward to attending college. The news about the deaths of two Meadowcreek High School students this week has left the school's community reeling as it mourns the teens. First came the news that the remains found off State Route 316 this week belonged to Susana Morales, 16, who had been missing since last summer. Then came the news that another student who had recently gone missing, Rodrigo Floriano Mayen, 17, was recently found dead from an overdose. Police said on Friday that the deaths are not related to one another. The deaths prompted Meadowcreek Principal Kevin Wood to send a letter to parents on Thursday. According to Gwinnett's local health department, GNR Public Health, the Georgia 9-1-1 Medical Amnesty Act is designed to encourage people to seek help in the event of an overdose by providing “limited immunity from arrest, charge and prosecution for possession of certain drugs and drug paraphernalia for individuals who experience a drug overdose and are in need of medical care and for those who seek medical care in good faith for a person experiencing an overdose.” Wood told Meadowcreek parents that counselors and social workers are being made available to students and staff members who need to talk to someone as they grieve the deaths of Morales and Mayen. Duluth police have arrested a man, who has been described as a “witch doctor,” on charges that he allegedly raped a woman who went to him for a cleansing ritual last weekend. Hassan Shalgheen, 44, met the victim through social media and set up a meeting for a cleansing at his apartment. On February 5, the victim contacted police, however, and told them that, rather than receiving a cleansing, she had been assaulted instead. Shalgheen was arrested on February 6 and booked into the Gwinnett County Jail. He has been charged with rape, sexual battery, false imprisonment and theft by deception. Police are now looking to see if there are other women who have also been victims. Anyone who has been a victim, or has additional information about the case, is asked to call the detective handling the case. In commemorating National School Counseling Week, Gwinnett County Public Schools held an awards program on Feb. 7 to recognize its top counseling award winners for 2023. Those honored included Dr. Natalie Pugh of Gwin Oaks Elementary School, Jameela Hall of Lilburn Middle School and Dr. Cedric Cooks of Norcross High School. In addition, Dr. Eric Davidson, principal at Duluth High School was recognized as the Mary Joe Hannaford Counselor Administrator of the Year Award. At the awards program, the school district also honored Duluth High School as a 2022 Recognized ASCA Model Program recipient. There are 34 counseling departments in the school system that are recipients of the RAMP National Award, which is awarded by the American School Counselor Association and recognizes schools that have established comprehensive data-driven counseling programs. This marks the second time Duluth High School has received RAMP recognition. A list of those honored can be found at Gwinnett Daily Post dot com. Gov. Brian Kemp announced on Wednesday that he has picked two members of Gwinnett County's legislative delegation to serve on a joint committee that provides legislative oversight for MARTA. State Senator Gloria Butler of Stone Mountain, and Representative Scott Hilton of Peachtree Corners, were among six legislators that Kemp appointed to the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Overview Committee, also known as MARTOC. While MARTA has its own board of directors, made up of members from counties that participate in the transit system, MARTOC is a joint House and Senate committee that serves a statutory role to provide oversight for MARTA, particularly in budgetary matters. Although Hilton and Butler do represent districts that include parts of Gwinnett, their districts also include portions of counties which participate in MARTA. In Hilton's case, that is a portion of Fulton County. In Butler's case, it is a part of DeKalb County. A plane that was damaged as it was forced to make an emergency landing on Interstate 985 last month did so because it had lost all power on its way back to Briscoe Field in Lawrenceville, according to report from federal investigators. The National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report into the Jan. 24 incident near Buford and Sugar Hill shows the Piper PA-28-140 airplane had been on a instructional flight when it experienced trouble. It's landing on the interstate shut down I-985 for hours during rush hour traffic. The instructor was able to confirm that the plane's throttle was full forward and that its fuel air mixture was full rich after the plane lost power, but they were too far out from Briscoe Field, where they had taken off from, to make it back safely. The plane was damaged during the attempted emergency landing. It clipped a truck before landing and the landing gear under the nose collapsed during the landing as well. There was other damage that was also listed in the report. Despite the damage to the plane, the flight instructor and the student pilot were not injured during the landing. Learn what it's like to ride bulls for a living, as Dakota Louis stops by ahead of the PBR event in Duluth. A Duluth High School student is facing criminal charges after they used a knife to cut a classmate during a fight shortly before classes began last Thursday, according to the school's principal. Duluth Principal Eric Davidson told parents in a letter on social media that the students got into a fight outside the cafeteria shortly before first period. One of the students pulled out a knife during the fight and inflicted what Davidson called a "superficial wound" on the other student. Duluth's school resource officers and several administrators were nearby when the incident occurred and quickly worked to the break the fight up, according to the principal. Both students are expected to face disciplinary consequences for fighting, but the student who was carrying the knife is also expected to face criminal charges since they were carrying a weapon on campus. In a follow up message to parents, Davidson said, all students involved in the incident, even those students who were only marginally involved, were suspended. The fight is the latest incident involving a weapon at a Gwinnett County school year, however. In October, a Grayson High School student was cut with a box cutter during a fight in a school bathroom, days after a Norcross High School student died after he was shot near campus during school hours. Around the same time, a Shiloh High School was arrested after he fire a gun on campus shortly after classes dismissed for the day. Critics of a new discipline policy that was put in place for Gwinnett County Public Schools last summer have pointed to the incidents, as well as others including increased numbers of fights, saying they are evidence that the district's new discipline approach is not working. In November, Gwinnett County Public Schools officials said the number of incidents involving guns between Aug. 1 and Oct. 31 had more than doubled compared to the same time period during the 2021 2022 school year, going from two incidents to five incidents. The number of incidents involving a blade or a razor had also increased, going from seven between August and October 2021 to 11 incidents between August and October of 2022. Collins Hill legend Maya Moore officially retired from the WNBA on Monday, making the announcement on "Good Morning America." Moore hasn't played in the WNBA since 2018, when she announced plans to commit time to criminal justice reform. Moore entered the WNBA in 2011 as the No. 1 pick of the Minnesota Lynx on the heels of leading UConn to the national title. She captured the Rookie of the Year award and the first of four WNBA titles (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017). Minnesota appeared in the playoffs eight consecutive seasons with Moore on the roster. An All-WNBA pick five consecutive seasons, Moore was league MVP in 2014 and a six-time All-Star with three All-Star MVP awards. At the high school level, Moore led Collins Hill to state championships her final three seasons and a national championship as a senior. As part of her commitment to criminal justice reform, Moore lobbied for the release of Jonathan Irons from the Jefferson City correctional center in Missouri. After 23 1/2 years behind bars, Irons was vindicated of a conviction for murder and burglary that happened when he was 16 years old. A judge set Irons free, citing a fingerprint report that would've proved Irons' innocence but was not turned over to his defense team. Moore and Irons are now married with a child, and have co-authored a book "Love and Justice." When Gwinnettians lined up to either participate in, or watch, the county's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in Lawrenceville on Monday, it was the first time they've been able to do so since before the COVID-19 pandemic. The parade, which is staged by the United Ebony Society of Gwinnett County, had the theme of “Why We Can't Wait.” The parade was not held in 2021 because of the pandemic. Meanwhile, last year's parade was cancelled partially because of a surge in COVID cases, but also because King's family had asked communities to use the day to focus on getting voting rights legislation passed by Congress instead of holding parades. The parade and celebration were not be the only way Gwinnettians honored King's legacy on Monday, however. Multiple local groups held service projects, such as Volunteer Gwinnett and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Kahmare Holmes had 19 points and five rebounds Monday in the Archer boys basketball team's 50-48 win over Buckhorn Alabama in the MLK National Showcase. The Tigers, seventh in Class 7A, also got contributions from Darrian Joseph (five points, three rebounds, two assists), Elijah Davis (five points), Bryce Kennedy (three points, two rebounds), Dominick Wright (three points, six rebounds, three steals) and Courtland Walker (six points, three rebounds, three assists). Class 7A Number 1 Norcross held Thompson Alabama to 17 second-half points in a 66-51 victory Monday in the MLK National Showcase. Lamariyon Jordan scored 23 for the Blue Devils, and Samarion Bond scored 16. And Greater Atlanta Christian fell 65-49 to Drew Charter, Number 8 in Double A, in Monday's Dream Challenge. Jonathan Waters led the Spartans with 15 points and six rebounds, while Kaosi Chijioke added nine points, six rebounds and two assists. GAC's other contributors included Nick Teague (five points, nine rebounds), Amare Williams (seven points, five assists, three rebounds) and Noah Harry (seven points, four rebounds). A man was shot by a Snellville police officer early Monday morning at a local gas station after police said the department "received multiple calls of a man brandishing a firearm." Police said an officer located the suspected vehicle shortly after 4 a.m. at the Speedway gas station located at Stone Mountain Highway and Highpoint Road. Snellville police said said the suspect was taken to a local hospital and was being treated. His condition was not immediately known. The department also said the officer "sustained a minor injury during the event" and was also treated at a hospital. According to police, a gun was located at the scene. Snellville police said the GBI has been called to investigate the incident, which is standard procedure in police involved shootings. One of them leads the company that has the naming rights to the Gas South District and has been involved in the county because of that. Jesse has been the Head Coach for Boys Basketball at Norcross High School for 11 years and has been a teacher and coach at Norcross for 19 years. He spent 12 years in the Norcross High School Language Arts Department before transitioning to Health & PE classes. During his time as head coach, Norcross won two state titles (2011, 2013) and finished state runner-up in 2017 and 2018. He has a winning mark of better than 80% in Georgia’s largest and toughest athletic classification. His Norcross teams participate in showcases and invitationals across the nation. Jesse grew up in a family of educators and knew early on that teaching and coaching was something he wanted to do. He spends about 335 days a year at Norcross working on the basketball program, and during the season many of those days are over fourteen hours long. Jesse is successful in part because he holds the players in his program to a high standard and evolves the program from being “coach lead” to “player lead”, empowering the team to make suggestions and approach during games, and hold each other accountable. Coach McMillan has been recognized in the Gwinnett Daily Post as showing “ a great ability to build chemistry [among the players]”. His fondest moments and most satisfying victories are Final Four and State Championship victories and memorable playoff wins versus Pebblebrook (2017), McEachern (2018), and Grayson (2019). Those games stand out because the team rose up against great odds and competed at the highest level. He’s also a bit superstitious; he makes sure to use his lucky pencil to fill out the scorebook at each game! Coach McMillan, his wife Elizabeth, and two children (Elyse and Mason) are long-time Norcross and Peachtree Corners residents. We thank them for their support and sacrifice to make the Norcross basketball program the best it can be! jesse_mcmillan@gwinnett.k12.ga.us @NorcrossHoops Check out Practice Planner Live Landing Page : https://www.practiceplannerlive.com/backoffice?referralCode=lFybQ8WxF8 Free Trial Page : https://www.practiceplannerlive.com/backoffice/auth/trial?referralCode=lFybQ8WxF8 --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kevin-furtado/support
