Five talented narrators join forces to deliver a nuanced performance of Jhumpa Lahiri's new collection of short stories. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss this collection written originally in Italian, the author's third language, and translated into English. The contemplative and elegant stories revolve around outsiders drawn to the City of Light. The mix of voices - Indian subcontinent, mid-American, British-African, Italian-American - highlights the atmosphere of displacement. Their voices create a tapestry of a story, weaving together these very different lives of those who live and long to belong in Rome. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Compliance Perspectives
Emeka Obiora on Health Care Compliance in the United Arab Emirates [Podcast]

Compliance Perspectives

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 15, 2023 12:23

By Adam Turteltaub Healthcare and healthcare compliance are often thought to be very country specific, due to the many variations of healthcare structures. To learn more about how healthcare compliance works in one country outside of the US we spoke with Emeka Obiora, Vice President, Ethics and Compliance at NMC Healthcare in Abu Dhabi. Emeka explains that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has something of a split system. Public sector hospitals primarily serve Emiratis, who are provided with healthcare by the government. Foreign workers in the UAE are required to carry insurance and typically see private providers. As a result, the risk profile is very different. It is there, though, with several key ones to manage. The first is licensing. The UAE relies upon medical professionals who come from all over the world and have vastly different training and backgrounds. All must be qualified and licensed locally, which represents a substantial undertaking. The second common risk area is conflicts of interest, which is focused on interactions with pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers. To ensure that there is undue influence, contact between clinicians and providers may be completely prohibited. As is the case elsewhere in the world, privacy is also a significant concern, and in the UAE it has grown to be a greater challenge now that there is a new, tougher law. So, is working in the UAE in healthcare right for you? Emeka recommends asking yourself if you have a sense of adventure. As importantly, ask the same about your family and what impact a move may have on them. If you do decide to take the plunge and find a potential opportunity, assess it like you would any other compliance position. Look at the organization and its governance structure: Will you have access to the senior level of the organization? Question carefully their approach to compliance and ethics. While it may likely not be as advanced as what you are used to in the US, if the tone and the commitment are there it's worth considering, especially because there is a growing emphasis on accountability, corporate responsibility and ethics in the UAE. That portends well for the future. Listen in to learn more, including one myth about the UAE that needs to be dispelled.

I'm excited to welcome architect and design tastemaker Obiora Nwazota to the show! Obiara will talk to us about how his experience in design and architecture and understanding of Igbo culture aided him in writing a successful children's book. Through his writing and work, Obiora normalizes stories that celebrates Igbo culture and provides us with a different lens through which to view Black culture. Obi moved to the US from Nigeria to study architecture. Upon his graduation he went on to work at the most innovative design firms in Chicago. From there, he would found his own firm, ONA formation, where he created several acclaimed projects influencing various scenes and cultures throughout Chicago before becoming the owner of the Orange Skin Showroom and Minotti-Chicago MonoBrand Showroom. In 2020 Obi launched ỌKPARA HOUSE©, whose mission is to harness the power of good design, dialogue, and academic research as powerful agents to stimulate, reactivate, elevate, and reimagine Igbo culture. Through this, he reclaims and asserts Igbo culture's relevance to contemporary lifestyles within and beyond the Igbo community. In April 2021, Okpara House Publishing released their first book, “Nkemdiche, Why We Do Not Grow Beards," an all-ages illustrated storybook. During our conversation with Obi, we will discuss how he came to architecture and how growing up Igbo influences everything he does. We talk about what culture means and what it means to be of African Descent in these modern times and how to think about imbuing rituals in our every day routines. Nigerian born and raised debut mystery author Noel Obiora watched the George Floyd video and said to himself, That could have been me. Having come to the United States when he was 17 in 1983, and having attended the University of Texas Law School, Noel, a black man in very white Texas, was pulled over many times for minor infractions and believes it was his accent that kept him safe from police brutality.   His debut crime novel, A Past that Breathes, takes place in Los Angeles in the early nineties when he practiced law in the City of Angels during racial turmoil bookended by the Rodney King and O.J. Simpson trials and years before the Black Lives Matter movement gave people a forum in which they could express their grief and anger. Listen in as we discuss his childhood in Nigeria to his University education in the United States and how he found working as a practicing attorney in Los Angeles a far cry from the expectations set by the hit TV drama L.A. Law. We also discuss how he found the confidence to write again after facing rejection, why it's important to get out of your own way in the publishing process, and his favorite Seinfeld episode.  This episode of Uncorking a Story is brought to you by Michael Carlon's latest novel, The Ruin of Souls. The case of the Central Park Five is being revisited with a new acclaimed Netflix limited series on the subject, When They See Us, directed by Ava DuVernay. This is the only book that is going to tell you all you need to know about one of the most infamous criminal cases in American history. A trial that, thirty years on, still bears a striking, and unsettling, resemblance to our current political climate in the era of President Donald Trump. In April 1989, a white woman who came to be known as the 'Central Park jogger' was brutally raped and severely beaten, her body left crumpled in a ravine. Amid the staggering torrent of media coverage and public outcry that ensued, exposing the deep-seated race and class divisions in New York City at the time, five teenagers were quickly apprehended - four black and one Hispanic. All five confessed, were tried and convicted as adults despite no evidence linking them to the victim. Over a decade later, when DNA tests connected serial rapist Matias Reyes to the crime, the government, law enforcement, social institutions and media of New York were exposed as having undermined the individuals they were designed to protect. In The Central Park Five, Sarah Burns, who has worked closely with the young men to uncover and document the truth, recounts the ins and outs of this historic case for the first time since their convictions were overturned, telling, at last, the full story of one of America's most legendary miscarriages of justice.

Do we get sick more often during benzo withdrawal? Do we get more infections? Do we suffer more hormonal imbalances? Does benzo use and withdrawal affect our immune and endocrine systems, and if so, what can we do about it?In today's episode, we discuss benzos' effects on these two essential systems. We also hear a story from New England, answer a question on adjuvant medication, and talk a bit about connections. Welcome to Episode #43 Today, we return to our 14-part series on the symptoms of benzo withdrawal by taking a look at our immune and endocrine systems. The evidence is somewhat anecdotal, but it appears that benzos can wreak havoc on these symptoms in some people. We also hear a story from New England, answer a question about what other mediations one can take during withdrawal, and discuss the connections many of us experience withing the benzo community. But first, let's list the resources used in this episode, and then we'll dive deeper into the content of episode 43. Episode Index Each time listed below is in minutes and seconds.
