Send us a textHalloween has finally arrived. I'm marking it in grim, macabre style. For this Off Book Samhain Special, I'm joined by Kaelyn Moore, host and creator of Heart Starts Pounding – a podcast for the darkly curious, which offers up a new true-story of horror, hauntings and mystery every week. Kaelyn is a treasure trove of haunted anecdote and freaky facts. We only touch the tip of her knowledge in this conversation, but still manage to cover the grimmest deaths at Disneyland, a South American Nazi cult, the most cursed book in history and Kaelyn's own family history with an early American serial killer. All that, plus a lot of recommendations for movies and the gruesome true-crime reading. Stick around for the afterword, and plenty of updates on the future of Talking Scared, Enjoy! Happy Halloween.  Books mentioned: The Man From the Train: The Solving of a Century-Old Serial Killer Mystery (2017), by Bill James and Rachel McCarthy JamesThe Butchering Art: Joseph Lister's Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine (2017), by Lindsey FitzharrisI'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer (2018), by Michelle McNamaraThe Devil's Rooming House: the True Story of America's Deadliest Female Serial Killer (2011), by M. Visit our store HERE for all of your favorite serial killer gear!!! Joseph James DeAngelo Jr. (born November 8, 1945) is an American serial killer, serial rapist, burglar, and a former police officer who committed at least 13 murders, 50 rapes, and 120 burglaries across California between 1974 and 1986. DeAngelo was responsible for at least three crime sprees throughout California, each of which spawned a different nickname in the press before it became evident that they were committed by the same person. In the San Joaquin Valley, he was known as the Visalia Ransacker before moving to the Sacramento area, where he became known as the East Area Rapist and was linked by modus operandi to additional attacks in Contra Costa County, Stockton, and Modesto. DeAngelo committed serial murders in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Orange counties, where he was known as the Night Stalker and later the Original Night Stalker (owing to serial killer Richard Ramirez also being called the "Night Stalker"). DeAngelo is believed to have taunted and threatened both victims and police in obscene phone calls and possibly written communications. True-crime writer, the late Michelle McNamara, is credited with coining the name The Golden State killer in her book I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer. Michelle McNamara, the author of the posthumously published "I'll be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden Gate Killer," is a sad and vivid example of the creative and destructive power of obsession. She died before finishing the book, of an overdose of prescription drugs that she was taking to fuel her writing and calm her anxiety. Her obsession with the Golden State Killer was both creative and destructive. In this episode of Creative Happy Hour, we drink Golden State Cider and discuss the story of Michelle McNamara, and what obsession can do to (and for) you.

Andi and Lise each read a book and then talked about it. The cool part is, they didn’t tell each other which book they decided to read, so it was happy fun discovery time! Lise read Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth (2019), which is, basically, lesbian necromancers in a gothic space palace with swordplay and intrigue and why the hell wouldn’t you want to read this awesome-ness? Gideon, the MC, is trying to escape a life of paranormal servitude but her childhood nemesis won’t let her leave without yet another service. And that nemesis is the powerful daughter of the 9th House, and in order to succeed in the emperor’s contest of wits and skills, Harrowhark needs her cavalier—Gideon on and her sword. Lise raved about the world-building, characterization, and Muir’s writing style. Find out more about Tamsyn Muir on Amazon. Andi read April Daniels’ Dreadnought (Nemesis Book One; 2017), an emotional roller-coaster of a ride starring teen Danny Tozer, who inherits the powers of superhero Dreadnought. In the transfer, the inheritor becomes their true self, and Danny is at last the young woman she has always known she’s been. But she has to deal with her unaccepting parents, coming out at school, figuring out where she fits in the league of superheroes, how her powers work and, on top of all that, the supervillain who murdered the previous Dreadnought. Andi loved the dialogue, the pacing, adventure, and yes, even the gut-wrenching turmoil Danny had to face. Find out more about April Daniels on Amazon. Andi’s shout-out this week was to true crime books; she just finished the late Michelle McNamara’s I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer and plz don’t read this at night kthx. A masterful true crime account of the Golden State Killer—the elusive serial rapist turned murderer who terrorized California for over a decade—from Michelle McNamara, the gifted journalist who died tragically while investigating the case. "You’ll be silent forever, and I’ll be gone in the dark." For more than ten years, a mysterious and violent predator committed fifty sexual assaults in Northern California before moving south, where he perpetrated ten sadistic murders. Then he disappeared, eluding capture by multiple police forces and some of the best detectives in the area. Three decades later, Michelle McNamara, a true crime journalist who created the popular website TrueCrimeDiary.com, was determined to find the violent psychopath she called "the Golden State Killer." Michelle pored over police reports, interviewed victims, and embedded herself in the online communities that were as obsessed with the case as she was. At the time of the crimes, the Golden State Killer was between the ages of eighteen and thirty, Caucasian, and athletic—capable of vaulting tall fences. He always wore a mask. After choosing a victim—he favored suburban couples—he often entered their home when no one was there, studying family pictures, mastering the layout. He attacked while they slept, using a flashlight to awaken and blind them. Though they could not recognize him, his victims recalled his voice: a guttural whisper through clenched teeth, abrupt and threatening. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark—the masterpiece McNamara was writing at the time of her sudden death—offers an atmospheric snapshot of a moment in American history and a chilling account of a criminal mastermind and the wreckage he left behind. It is also a portrait of a woman’s obsession and her unflagging pursuit of the truth. Framed by an introduction by Gillian Flynn and an afterword by her husband, Patton Oswalt, the book was completed by Michelle’s lead researcher and a close colleague. Utterly original and compelling, it is destined to become a true crime classic—and may at last unmask the Golden State Killer. give it a'listen We finally delve into some true crime this week--and it brought up a lot of feels. Behind the Badge with DianeThis episode is the first of the interview series where I talk with friends and colleagues about their career changes. Our occupational lives are so complex and often the pathway takes many turns due to life, opportunities, challenges, or new ways of seeing your own career. This might be out of personal interest and perspective; however, I will have a conversation with a few women who have left one industry for another role. In the conversation with Diane, we talk a bit about what goes on behind the badge. Diane is a campus police officer now; however, she has worked in residence life, studied forensic psychology, and talk English overseas. We discuss everything from volunteering, Zumba, policy academy, and resources you should consider for getting into police enforcement as a women. I am grateful for Diane's honest and willingness to share her successes, challenges, failures, and lessons learned. I learn so much about opportunities to work with the government and other agencies related to law, and Diane reminds us that NCIS or Criminal minds is not the FBI/CIA fully. Much of the career paths and point of entry look different, so we list a few generic ways to learn more about this career path below. I know I am reminded about what life on campus looks like for an officer, the humorous, scary, and typical events do community policing or patrol on a daily basis. In talking about police enforcement, there was some surprising, appalling, and insightful aspects for what women in the academy deal with when entering the field. From this experience, I think listening to this conversation reminds me about how we work with, talk to, and treat one another is so very important beyond work and in society. Also, she reminds us how working in service to the public does take a toll on your physically and emotionally, so we swap resources and ideas.“If you support me, my confidence builds. If you make me feel like I'm literally less than you because I'm female, then I can't grow here.” Diane shares her Police Experiences as a Women. Resources from things we discussed on this episode:-What is a Forensic Psychologist? https://www.psychology.org/careers/forensic-psychologist/#what-is -FBI Jobs https://www.fbijobs.gov/ -Central Intelligence Agency Careers https://www.cia.gov/careers/index.html -Police Academy Requirements (US) https://policeacademyhub.com/-Physical Ability Test (PAT) https://nationaltestingnetwork.com/publicsafetyjobs/ntn-test-pat.cfm -As of 2017, 14.1% offers are women from Police Officers | Data USA https://datausa.io/profile/soc/333050/  -Campus Police https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campus_police -Copline http://www.copline.org/ is the suicide/help hotline for police-Citizen's Police Academy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen%27s_Police_Academy -Citizen's Academy for FBI https://www.fbi.gov/about/community-outreachBooks Recommendations:--Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement: A Guide for Officers & Their Families by Kevin Gilmartin--Food Freedom Forever: Letting Go of Bad Habits, Guilt, and Anxiety Around Food by Melissa Hartwig--Resisting Happiness by Matthew Kelly--The Evil That Men Do by R. This episode features an interview Matt Tullis did with Brooke Jarvis in May 2015. In the interview, Jarvis talks about her story “The Deepest Dig,” which was included in the Best American Science and Nature Writing 2015 anthology. That story ran in the California Sunday Magazine. She also talked about her piece “Homeward,” which also ran in the California Sunday Magazine. That story is about a young man from the jungles of Ecuador, whose village sent him to the United States so he could be educated and come back to save the village from the oil industry and colonization. Since joining the podcast, Jarvis won the Livingston Award in National Reporting — she won that in 2017 for her story “Unclaimed.” In 2016, she was the recipient of the Reporting Award from NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, and a finalist for the PEN USA Literary Award in Journalism and the Livingston Award in International Reporting. In November of 2017, her story “How One Woman’s Digital Life Was Weaponized Against Her” went viral after being the cover story on Wired Magazine. And in December, she had a piece in the New York Times Magazine about the children of undocumented immigrants whose parents had been deported, and yet they were left stateside. In June, Jarvis’s story, “The Obsessive Search for the Tasmanian Tiger,” ran in The New Yorker. The Tasmanian Tiger has long been thought extinct, but now there is hope that it is still alive.

With the rise of true crime podcasts, documentaries, and television shows (hey, murderinos!), JJ (who is also crime obsessed) can't help but wonder—why hasn't human trafficking been taken up by the true crime community? This week, Seth and JJ discuss why studying killers can be helpful to those who study trafficking, how the true crime community can help, and the legal differences between trafficking and other crimes like kidnapping. JJ also weirds out Seth with her love of murder. It is presented as a series cameras set up by the couple in an attempt to document what is haunting them. The film sets up found-footage conventions that were mirrored in the later films of the series.-- 18:10 - Deadpool - is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Fabian Niciezaand artist/writer Rob Liefeld, the character first appeared in The New Mutants #98 (cover-dated February 1991). Initially Deadpool was depicted as a supervillain when he made his first appearance in The New Mutants and later in issues of X-Force, but later evolved into his more recognizable antiheroic persona. Deadpool, whose real name is Wade Wilson, is a disfigured and deeply disturbed mercenary and assassin with the superhuman ability of an accelerated healing factor and physical prowess. The character is known as the "Merc with a Mouth" because of his tendency to joke constantly, including his proclivity for breaking the fourth wall, a literary device used by the writers for humorous effect and running gags.-- 18:55 - Solo - is a 2018 American space Western film based on the Star Wars character Han Solo. Directed by Ron Howard, it was produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, and is the second of the Star Wars anthology films following 2016's Rogue One. It stars the first film's main cast while introducing the character Boba Fett, who would appear in later films. It is one of the first official Star Wars spin-offs and was directed by Steve Binder. In the storyline that ties the special together, Chewbacca and Han Solo visit Kashyyyk, Chewbacca's home world, to celebrate Life Day. They are pursued by agents of the Galactic Empire, who are searching for members of the Rebel Alliance on the planet. The special introduces three members of Chewbacca's family: his father Itchy, his wife Malla, and his son Lumpy, though these names were later explained to have been nicknames, their full names being Attichitcuk, Mallatobuck, and Lumpawarrump, respectively. The program also features many other Star Wars characters, including Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, R2-D2, Darth Vader and Princess Leia (who sings the film's "theme song", set to the music of John Williams' Star Wars theme, near the end), all of them portrayed by the original actors. The program includes stock footage from Star Wars,[1] and also features a cartoon produced by Toronto-based Nelvana that officially introduces the bounty hunter Boba Fett. Scenes also take place in outer space and in spacecraft including the Millennium Falcon and an Imperial Star Destroyer. The variety-show segments and cartoon also take place in a few other locales, such as a Mos Eisley cantina on the desert planet of Tatooine and a newly introduced red ocean planet known as Panna. The special is notorious for its extremely negative reception and has never been rebroadcast or officially released on home video. It has, therefore, become something of a cultural legend, because of the "underground" quality of its existence. It has been viewed and distributed in off-air recordings made from its original telecast by fans as bootleg copies, and later adapted to content-sharing websites.-- 24:51- Alex's Daily Routine-- 34:34 - Productivity-- Gary Vaynerchuk - is a Belarusian American entrepreneur, author, speaker and internet personality. Beloved crime writer Michelle McNamara died suddenly in 2016 before she could complete her book about an uncaught California serial killer she named the Golden State Killer. Her husband, comedian Patton Oswalt, hired crime writer Billy Jensen and Michelle's research assistant, Paul Haynes, to organize her drafts and notes into a publishable manuscript. Her incredible book, 'I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer' is now a number one New York Times bestseller. Michelle's book is an incredibly important addition to the lexicon of true crime: a beautiful, thoughtful, obsessive work that very well may lead to the capture of a prolific and brutal serial killer who operated in the mid 70s to mid 80s, responsible for 50 rapes and 10 murders. It was Billy and Paul that brought her work to life.
