Thank you for tuning in for another episode of Life's Best Medicine. Ken Armstrong is a business analyst, cyclist, and low-carb/keto proponent. He has an amazing weight loss story—losing over 210 lbs over the course of his dietary journey—with high points and low points and lessons learned along the way. Having been disappointed again and again by a variety of different diets, Ken discovered Gary Taubes' book, Why We Get Fat, which set him on the path to finally attaining health and sustainable weight loss. After falling off the wagon for a while, he returned to low-carb and began trying intermittent fasting as well. This combination of fasting and dieting helped him to regain the progress he had lost. Since then, he has been experimenting with the carnivore diet as part of his continued effort to discover which nutritional decisions are best for him. “You are never beyond help. You are never beyond hope.” This is the message that Ken wants to communicate. In this episode, Brian and Ken talk about Ken's health journey so far, dealing with gall stones, wether or not fat can be addictive by itself, protein-sparing modified fasting, preparing for success in tempting situations, mindfulness and sympathetic overdrive, the vital importance of community for physical and mental health, why diet alone is not sufficient to make one healthy, learning to enjoy the journey rather than being impatient to reach the goal, and food addiction. Imagine that you've been assaulted and no one, not the police, not your friends, and not even your family believe you. Would you continue to insist that you were telling the truth, or would the weight of disbelief cause you to say, “Nothing happened. I made it up”. On second thought, don't answer yet. I'll ask you again after you hear Marie's story. Our book this week is Unbelievable by award winning authors T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong. Netflix released a very well received limited series based on the book. Human rights attorney Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy, which I featured in the very first episode of The Unlovely Truth, had this to say about the book: “This is a devastating but necessary read, composed by masters of investigative journalism.” I agree. It's one of the best books I've read in a long time. It does contain material about rape, so please use your best judgement about whether to listen or recommend this episode. For everyone who does listen, this case has a lot of crazy twists and turns, so hold on tight. You'll be outraged when you hear the rapist tell one of his victims that he had a compulsion to rape that he couldn't control. Let's look at what it says in Ezekiel 18:29-30. “But the house of Israel says, ‘The Lord's way isn't fair.' ‘Is it my ways that are unfair, house of Israel? Instead, isn't it your ways that are unfair? Therefore, house of Israel, I will judge each one of you according to his ways.' This is the declaration of the Lord God. ‘Repent and turn from all your rebellious acts, so they will not become a sinful stumbling block to you.'” When you read the whole chapter so you have some context, you learn that there was a saying making the rounds in Israel that basically implied that when parents sinned, their children could suffer the consequences. This saying was especially popular with anyone who wanted to shift the blame for their own shortcomings onto someone else. God used Ezekiel to set the people straight. Each of us are responsible for our own sin. But as is always the case where God is concerned, there's hope. For anyone who would turn from their sin, there was forgiveness. From what information is given to us in this week's book, Marc O'Leary hasn't done that. License plate readers and the data they collect were crucial to solving multiple rapes and finding information that eventually led to proving that Marie had not lied about her rape. Check with your local police to see if your community uses them and if not, find out what you can do to help make it happen. If your neighborhood has a Homeowners Association, see if they would be willing to discuss adding them to the entrances to the neighborhood. Knowing who is around you, your kids, and the rest of your community helps keep us all a bit safer. If you liked this episode, be sure to check out some earlier ones. I've had so many amazing guests who gave me fantastic information you won't want to miss. You can also help someone else begin their journey as a different kind of PI - a person of impact, when you share the episode, and when you subscribe, give me a five-star rating and a nice review. The popularity of true-crime TV shows has risen in recent years, coinciding with the surge in OTT and streaming platforms across the globe. More often than not true-crime series are well received and are widely popular. However, a few go unnoticed despite being critically acclaimed, and one such series is the Netflix Original TV show, Unbelievable. That's the OTTplay Lost and Found for today. The series stars Kaitlyn Dever as Marie Adler, a young woman charged with lying about being raped. She soon finds herself ostracized by her friends and society after the systems in place designed to protect her become her worst nightmare. The narrative emphasizes how the authorities were callous and incentive in how they dealt with her allegations. It isn't until the investigation is taken over by Toni Collette's Det. Grace Rasmussen and Merritt Wever's Det. Karen Duvall that Marie Adler feels hopeful that her reputation could be restored. The well-paced narrative and absorbing screenplay ensured that Unbelievable was one of the best-reviewed shows of 2019. Kaitlyn Dever's performance was singled out from immense praise by the critics. The series is a commentary on how victims of sexual abuse are treated by society. It is inspired by a Pulitzer Prize-winning article by T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong titled An Unbelievable Story of Rape". If you haven't watched this crime series yet then do so it's streaming exclusively on Netflix.Well, that's the Lost and Found film for today's podcast, I shall be back again soon with a new episode. In 2021 it's difficult for the average person to imagine that someone born and raised in the United States does not know how to use technology or navigate public transportation, or could be overcome with anxiety at the thought of crossing the street. Now imagine being in a position where it's frowned upon to ask for help in those situations or even ask questions because you're expected to just KNOW. I was that person 6 years ago. For over a decade I lived in what I call a time capsule. I was eventually released from one of NJ's state prisons but to an area, where I had never lived, at an age that people expected me to act in a manner that was foreign to me, and without the support needed for my survival. I couldn't get a job because I never had a resume, I couldn't get an apartment because I had no rental, employment, or credit history, I couldn't do the many things that would prevent me from going back to the system designed for me to fail. I'm not the only neighbor you pass that has a similar reentry experience. Hiding In Plain Sight: The Neighbors You Never Hear From is an audio series that will take you on the journey of reentry through the first-hand experiences of 6 people and where they are today.Tia Ryans is an advocate against the detrimental culminations of the criminal legal system. Welcome to Protecting Your Nest with Dr. Tony Hampton. Joining the show all the way from Ireland today is Ken Armstrong. Ken spent much of his professional life working in retail and managing restaurants and bars. Through poor eating choices, poor sleep, and lots of stress, he ended up weighing 450 pounds. By the time he was 41 or 42 years of age, he came across Gary Taubes’ book, Why We Get Fat, and, following the low sugar and low carb advice he found there, started dropping pounds very quickly. By the time 18 months had elapsed, he had lost 170 pounds! In this conversation, Ken shares about his life as a person who has had the life-changing experience of going from obese to achieving a healthier weight. He talks not only of his successes and his methods for maintaining that success, but also of his failures and what caused him to lose sight of his goals at times. Over the course of his health journey, Ken has had ups and downs, but the many benefits of LowCarb and fasting—benefits that he and Dr. Tony discuss—have kept him coming back. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Commercial drivers who stopped at Florida's southbound Interstate 75 rest area near Ocala last Thursday (May 7) were treated to a free meal in appreciation for their work on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Florida Trucking Association (FTA) and the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) partnered to provide lunches to essential workers. Meals were sponsored by the FTA, Chick-fil-A, Publix Super Markets and Walmart Transportation. “FDOT is proud to support Florida's truck drivers, who have continued to work tirelessly during the fight against COVID-19,” said Florida DOT Secretary Kevin J. Thibault, P.E. “These individuals are on the front lines each day providing vital goods to Floridians during this unprecedented time — keeping shelves stocked, medicine delivered and supplies directed to those most in need. Their selflessness is inspiring, and the department is committed to continuing to support their needs as they serve others.” During the event, FDOT, FTA, and FHP distributed 500 meals to truck drivers at the southbound Interstate 75 rest area near Ocala at mile marker 346 in Marion County. “We are always proud of what our member companies and their drivers do every day of the year,” said Ken Armstrong, president of FTA. “Their patriotism and pride in the profession shines brightly during this time, as all Floridians become more aware of the vital role these men and women play in our daily lives. We thank FDOT for joining us today to recognize their work.” Col. Gene Spaulding, director of FHP, also expressed gratitude to truck drivers for their dedication and professionalism. “We are privileged to partner with the Safety Management Council Executive Committee, the Florida Trucking Association, and the Florida Department of Transportation in support of our truck drivers,” he said. “It's our honor to participate in this special recognition to them for the outstanding job they do every day.” There are approximately 38,000 trucking companies in the state of Florida, and one in 21 jobs in the state is in the trucking industry. It goes without saying that we are living in unprecedented times. Leading up to a presidential election and being told to stay in our homes due to a pandemic quarantine has forced us all to live life very differently than we typically would. Because of this, all of the Libertarian conventions and campaign tours have come to a sudden screeching halt. With basically all LP debates being cancelled and candidates having far less abilities to get their names and their messages out to the people who need to hear them, I saw a hole and decided to fill it. Today's episode is our full panel 12 candidate digital 2020 presidential debate for Libertarian Party candidates. This debate was live streamed on our Facebook page on 04.24.2020 and has since received over 10,000 views and climbing. People WANT to hear what these men have to say. People WANT to hear from their options. This episode is the condensed version of that debate. The only things that were edited out are the discussions during intermissions and the AfterParty Q&A discussion, which will be made available to members of The Downers Club at Patreon.com/thesystemisdown. Let's do what the mainstream media refuses to do and help these candidates' messages of liberty be heard.  Participating candidates in this debate were: Arvin Vohra, Jacob Hornberger, Judge Jim Gray, Adam Kokesh, John McAfee, Vermin Supreme, Dan "Taxation is Theft" Behrman, Ken Armstrong, John Monds, Sam Robb, Andy Williams Jr, and Kenneth Blevins. Mark Whitney was also scheduled to attend, but suspended his campaign shortly before the debate.

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode discusses sexual assault, sometimes in explicit terms. If that's a trigger for you, then you may want to sit this one out. Also, we tried not to be graphic about it, but you might want to listen to this using your headphones. Rape is a historical phenomenon, but not one that historians always consider in frank terms. In this episode, we'll talk about modern rape myths and how they contort our society and our judicial system into weird knots. We'll try to avoid being ahistorical and projecting these PARTICULAR myths back onto earlier periods of history, but seriously: Rape myths have existed in one form or another throughout recorded history. We need to take good, long look at them if we want to understand the past OR the present. We'll also discuss that most pernicious of rape myths: The idea that false reports are ubiquitous. Also, MOST importantly, we'll talk about how you can avoid being raped by not wearing overalls. ...yes, that's real advice that some women have been given. God help us all. Her account was doubted by both her foster parents and the Lynnwood Police Department, and she was criminally charged with filing a false police report. Reporting from the South Bend Tribune and ProPublica revealed deep flaws and abuses of power in the criminal justice system in Elkhart, Indiana – from new revelations in the wrongful convictions of two men, to the promotions of police supervisors with serious disciplinary records, to the mishandling of police misconduct cases. The investigation led to the resignation of the police chief, criminal charges against two officers and plans for an independent investigation of the department, demonstrating the strong, immediate impact that investigative journalism can have at the local level – and its ability to force critical changes in communities. Read this excellent example of collaborative journalism here: https://www.southbendtribune.com/elkhartcoverage/ Heidi Legg talked to reporter Christian Sheckler from the south Bend Tribune, and Ken Armstrong from ProPublica, about the deep searches they did through public records to find evidence of misconduct, and the collaborative experience of reporting this story at the South Bend Tribune - a local newspaper with only 12 reporters.   This episode is part of the Shorenstein Center's special series of interviews with the finalists for the 2019 Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Journalism. Perhaps nowhere else in the country is the impact of recent immigration trends so pronounced as in New England, where the predominantly white population is quickly aging, and where the influx of young immigrants is changing the identity of the region. This week, we hear from employers who bank on immigrant labor, community members getting ready for an influx of Syrian refugees, and foreign-born workers training to care for the elderly. Members of the Rutland community work with a Castleton University student from Saudi Arabia (right) during an Arabic class in Rutland's Unitarian Universalist church. Photo by Ryan Caron King / NENC Also, the Connecticut origin story of the Gun that Won the West, and a how the murder of a priest taught us all a lesson about protecting the innocent. This is the Church, This is the Steeple, Where are the People? New England is nearing a demographic crisis. That population of our six states is aging fast, and birth rates are the lowest in the nation. States have been trying to keep young people from leaving, and have become desperate to find young workers who can fill jobs, attract new businesses and pay taxes. Meanwhile, the issue of immigration – a way to get new people into the region – has become polarizing. Those trends – and a search for solutions – are what's behind the New England News Collaborative’s new series, “Facing Change.” In Maine, policy makers are working to expand services for immigrants with the goal of boosting local economies – but other states haven’t taken up that strategy. New Hampshire Public Radio‘s Emily Corwin takes a look at the data on the impact of immigrants on economic growth. New England’s aging population presents another question: who is going to take care of the region’s Baby Boomers in old age? WBUR reporter Shannon Dooling visited a job training program in Boston to find out. (Credit: Sara Plourde/NHPR) Residents of Rutland, Vermont are deeply divided over the plan to resettle Syrian refugees there. (Credit: Ryan Caron King/NENC) Our last stop on our journey through New England's demographic changes takes us to Rutland, Vermont. It's a small, blue-collar city, that’s readying to accept 100 refugees from Syria and Iraq. Not everyone's thrilled about the idea, but as Vermont Public Radio reporter Nina Keck reports, many locals are working together to make sure the plan succeeds. More stories from the New England News Collaborative’s “Facing Change” series.  “The Damn Yankee Rifle” An engraving from the Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Credit: Connecticut Historical Society) When you think about places where guns are big, you probably don't think about Connecticut. The Nutmeg State has the sixth lowest gun ownership rate in America, and passed some of the nation’s strictest gun laws after the Sandy Hook tragedy of 2012. But in the second half of the Nineteenth Century, Connecticut was a gun manufacturing center for the world. Oliver Winchester, a shirt maker who grew up in poverty, became one of the titans of the industry, manufacturing a new kind of rifle at his factory in New Haven. Writer and BBC correspondent Laura Trevelyan  chronicles Winchester's rise, the role of his rifle in American Westward expansion, and more in her new book The Winchester: the Gun that Built an American Dynasty. Winchester rifles were used against Native Americans during the Indian Wars of Westward expansion. But some Native Americans used Winchester rifles to fight the US army and settlers.
