I learned much from today's podcast with mold expert Bridgit Danner. I've never given much thought about mold and the impact it could have on chronic disease or even cancer! When Bridgit explained that chemical warfare is often made from a mold, she got my attention! If mold is strong enough to be used in a bomb, what kind of havoc can it create in my body? Listen to today's episode to learn more about this fascinating topic.   Information About Today's Guest, Bridgit Danner: www.BridgitDanner.com Links to Bridgit's Books: The Ultimate Guide to Toxic Mold Recovery: Take Back Your Home, Health & Life Your Complete Guide to Health Recovery from Toxic Mold According to Dr. Isaac Eliaz: "You may not be aware of it, but mold is probably affecting your health. So even if it's not on your mind, “how to detox your body from mold” should be something we all need to be asking. Even if mold is making you sick, you might not know it's the source of your symptoms. That's because mold toxicity can act like many other conditions, so it often goes misdiagnosed and untreated. Exposure can cause many different symptoms, including: Fatigue Cough Shortness of breath Fever Headache Joint pain Memory problems Dizziness Sinus infections Wheezing Trouble concentrating Sensitivity to light Skin rash Digestive problems One of the main reasons mold toxins can cause so many different symptoms is this: These toxins can suppress or damage your immune system. Not only can they bring on symptoms themselves, they can make you more vulnerable to other illnesses. Surrounded by Mold Mold exposure is shockingly common. It's found in the air, damp or water-damaged buildings, even the food you're eating. Foods that commonly contain mold include cereal grains, nuts, spices, coffee, bulk foods (like the kind you buy from bins to save money) and dairy products. You come across mold inside and outside, and it can travel around with you. Mold spores can attach to things like: Clothing Shoes Pets Reusable grocery bags That means it can come home with you from just about anywhere. And if it ends up somewhere even slightly damp, it will grow and multiply. In nature, mold speeds up the break down (decomposition) of things like dead trees and fallen leaves. Some molds are used to make cheese or create antibiotics. But many types of mold can be hazardous to your health. These molds produce mycotoxins, poisons that can cause severe health problems and a wide variety of symptoms. The two most common harmful mycotoxins are aflatoxin and ochratoxin, and exposure to either (or both) of these can trigger substantial health issues — from chronic allergies to cancer. What's more, if your body can't remove these toxins on its own, they can slip into long-term storage to cause lasting or recurring damage. Mycotoxins Damage Your Health Mycotoxins are sneaky. While mold itself can't enter your bloodstream — though it can hang around and colonize in spots like your nostrils and lungs — mycotoxins can get into your bloodstream and circulate throughout your body. These opportunistic toxins can hijack your immune system, making you more vulnerable to infections. If your immune system is already compromised (such as people with autoimmune conditions or undergoing cancer treatment), mycotoxins take advantage. If you're healthy, they can make you very sick. Studies show that mycotoxins can: Cause lung inflammation that can make it harder to breathe Disrupt your gut health by reducing beneficial bacteria and encouraging pathogens Trigger chronic fatigue syndrome Affect brain function and cognition Cause liver damage, including cancer Worsen allergy and asthma symptoms Unfortunately, mold toxicity is frequently misdiagnosed. Because of its wide-ranging effects, it's typically mistaken for other conditions including depression, multiple sclerosis, or autoimmune conditions. Plus, because mycotoxins are opportunistic, they're often connected with debilitating diseases such as Lyme disease, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and fibromyalgia." I was SHOCKED to hear that when I buy frozen fish, it's frozen TWICE. It's usually frozen right after being caught, defrosted, processed, and then frozen again. I buy a lot of frozen fish; sometimes, the taste and texture can be inconsistent. Now that I have a better understanding of the processing of the fish before it hits my plate, it makes me wonder about quality. I called a friend who works at ButcherBox and asked her about the process with their salmon. She assured me that BB only freezes the fish ONCE! Which helps preserve the nutrients and taste. The big one for me is texture. When I eat fish, I want a firm texture, not rubbery! After getting over my shock (yes, fooled again by the food corporations) I asked my BB friend if I could pretty-please offer free salmon to my community. This episode strays away from our usual path of interviews with oncologists and health experts. Today, we're going into the world of crime and consequence. I'm honored to be joined by Kate Moore, the brilliant mind behind "The Radium Girls." This book, a personal favorite of mine, not only captivated me but also disturbed me to the core.  Today's conversation isn't about your typical crime drama. It's about a crime that unfolded silently, hidden within the glow of radium, a substance once celebrated for its luminescent properties. But beneath its shimmering allure lies a dark truth—a truth that Kate's book fearlessly confronts. In an era where crime stories dominate our screens and shelves, we often forget the crimes silently committed against our health and environment. The story of the Radium Girls falls precisely into this category—a tale of betrayal, injustice, and the insidious impact of unchecked industrial practices. Join us as we discuss all of the unsettling details of this cancer crime story. Kate Moore, hailing from the UK, brings her expertise and passion to our conversation, guiding us through this haunting narrative. Dhruvin Patel is an optometrist and founder of Ocushield, pioneering blight filtering technology so as to improve eye health and sleep, leading to a more fulfilling life in general. Dhruvin talks to Angela about the choices we can make on a daily basis to ensure that we are not slowly and insidiously destroying our eyes and our health, and the profound long term effects that can result if we do not begin to take better care. KEY TAKEAWAYS With the rise of computer working, many have failed to consider the long term damage being done by blue light emitted through our displays. Ocushield technology can eliminate this risk. UV protection is vital, even in places such as the UK where it's generally overcast. Just because it's cloudy, doesn't mean that plentiful UV light is not still being emitted. Even though we may believe that we can see very well, weaker eyes are propped up by healthy ones, so ill effects may be masked until it's too late. From a blue light perspective, it's wise to begin now in the implementation of filtering technology in schools, or we may be facing a health crisis en masse in the future. BEST MOMENTS 'Many of us are not as aware as we should be about the things we do on a daily basis that may be damaging our eyes' 'UV light can contribute towards cataracts' 'I really want to help people - to make an impact' 'On average, children are using screens for upwards of six hours per day!' From humble beginnings to building Ocushield, getting featured on Dragons' Den (and winning over Peter Jones & Tej Lalvani in the process), Forbes, The Guardian & USA Today - talking about eye health and blue light, it's been an entrepreneurial journey full of ups and downs and yes a lot of lessons and joys. At Ocushield, we have helped over 300,000 eyes in over 70 countries with our products to protect their eyes. I've always prided myself on excellent eyesight. But I have had to concede in recent years that my eyes are simply nowhere near as good as they used to be. I have been trying to convince myself that it's a natural consequence of aging :) After all, many people develop presbyopia as they get older (where you gradually lose the ability to focus on close-up objects).  But I've been forced to admit that aging's role is only a small part of the story for me. Because when it comes to the end of a long day in front of my computer, my eyes just don't work as well. Things get a bit blurry. My eyes are tired and overworked. Dhruvin Patel can help with that. His company is Ocushield, and as you'll hear he's got a deep knowledge of the science of our eyesight and what's going on with screens.    THIS SHOW IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY: BiOptimizers — Four out of five Americans are magnesium deficient, and almost everyone is at suboptimal levels. That's a big problem because magnesium is involved in more than 600 biochemical reactions in your body. Now here's what most people DON'T know: taking just any magnesium supplement won't solve your problem because most supplements use the cheapest kinds that your body can't use or absorb. That's why I exclusively recommend Magnesium Breakthrough. It's the only full-spectrum magnesium supplement with seven unique forms of magnesium that your body can actually use and absorb. When you get all seven critical forms of magnesium, pretty much every function in your body gets upgraded. From your brain to your sleep, pain, inflammation and less stress. Here comes the best part: the makers of Magnesium Breakthrough - BiOptimizers - are having an incredible Black Friday special offer from November 21st to 29th. You can get - not only Magnesium Breakthrough - but all of BiOptimizers best in class products with 25% off. (In the UK, the discount is 10% not 25%)

According to some businesses, the laptop, phone and TV screens we use every day are causing us big problems. They claim these devices emit concentrations of "harmful blue light" which leaves us with tired eyes and poor sleep. One firm goes even further by suggesting this may contribute to a worrying long term condition, macular degeneration which leaves you with a permanent black hole in the centre of your vision. Their solution? A pair of trendy looking spectacles which claim to filter out this blue light. Listener, Sophie spends roughly 12 hours a day at a screen of some sort. She bought a pair but isn't sure if they work. So she's asked Greg to look into them and find out. We get answers from two leading lights in the science of our eyes. The Wellness Paradox
The Role of Reducing Blue Light in Improving Health & Fitness w/Dr. Dhruvin Patel

The Wellness Paradox

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 23, 2022 42:33

Blue light is all around us, and most of us are unaware. Our screens, the lights in our house, nearly everywhere we look there is blue light. The impact of blue light on our natural circadian rhythms is striking. In the morning this blue light helps us wake effectively, getting us ready for the day. At night, a natural reduction in light from the sun helps us prepare to sleep. This equation worked well thousands of years ago when the only light we had was natural light from our sun. Not so, in modern times. Everything around us is designed to keep us (and, more importantly, our circadian rhythms) thinking it's day time, greatly affecting sleep quality and all the knock-on effects that has on health. To discuss this in episode 45, we're joined by Dhruvin Patel, an optometrist and of founder Ocushield, a company that develops technology to filter out blue light. We found this conversation particularly insightful, not only with respect to the understanding of the role blue light plays in our circadian rhythms and sleep cycle, but also just the eye health plays in overall health. Dhruvin's unique combination of his understanding of optometry, circadian rhythms, sleep, and health/fitness makes him the perfect person to guide us through our understanding of this important concept to help clients become healthier and reach their goals. This is a great deep dive into many topics few fitness professionals likely consider. Not only will the foundations be discussed, but also some actionable and practical takeaways. This is a very high mileage area to address, because it's so ever-present, while at the same time, so minimally considered. Most definitely a conversation you won't want to miss. Show Note Page: https://www.wellnessparadoxpod.com/episode45 Our Guest: Dr. Dhruvin PatelDhruvin Patel is a qualified optometrist, entrepreneur, founder and SeeEO of Ocushield, his company which he started in 2018. Dhruvin's vision is to educate as many people around the world about the importance of improving our eye health as possible, and also about protecting our eyes from the harmful blue light that is being emitted from our smartphones and other tech devices. So far his company Ocushield has helped 100,000 eyes, and delivers eye saving products to over 70 countries. Dhruvin created a range of medically rated anti blue light glasses, protective devices for smartphones, laptops and iPads, as well as a low blue light lamp, the Oculamp. Dhruvin also has a keen philanthropic streak, which is why for every $1 spent with Ocushield, he has pledged to match this as a donation to Orbis, a charity which operates a flying eye hospital and which pioneers research to help combat serious eye diseases and blindness.

Brittny is joined by founder & CEO of health-tech business Ocushield, Dhruvin Patel. Dhruvin created the world's first MHRA registered blue-light blocking screen protectors which mean fresher feeling eyes and improved sleep after screen use. Launching while in his final year as an Optometry student, Ocushield has grown into a 7-figure business and exports to more than 72 countries - and sells in companies such as Nordstrom, Best Buy, Sky Mobile and Superdrug. Did you know the average pair of blue light blocking glasses only reduces 19% of the most harmful blue light? Meanwhile, Ocushield reduces those same harmful blue lights by 54%. Brittny and Dhruvin discuss how and why he went about creating Ocushield, the funding process, the negative effects of blue light to skin and eyes, ways to mitigate and reduce blue light exposure, easy ways to reduce screen time and creating routines that allow you to do so, ways to stimulate your brain without screens, and what makes Ocushield different than other blue light products! Ocushield offers products beyond glasses including screen protectors/shields, lamps, and more. Dhruvin has been featured in Forbes, Cosmopolitan, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal. His recent pitch on Dragon's Den was so compelling that it resulted in an offer from not one but two Dragons, Tej Lalvani and Peter Jones, who went head-to-head for Ocushield's business.Use code BKING20 for 20% off Ocushield products! Get on the waitlist for the Mind Over Matter MethodConnect with Dhruvin: https://www.ocushield.com/https://www.instagram.com/getocushield/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiCiSjO3g9gIyC2bJKkVXIAhttps://twitter.com/GetOcuShield
