About Craig Randall - I've loved stories and literature and writing for as long as I can remember. For just as long, I've also struggled with anxiety and depression. They have loomed over me, all my life, threatening to steal away whatever hope and joy i've worked so hard to build. All my work, the fiction and the poetry, was born out of this struggle as I worked to overcome and deal the hardships these struggles brought on.There's so much to the story, which I will write about later. In the mean time, just know you're not alone. You are brilliant and strong and are not a product of whatever's held you back. You got this! We got this!Oh, one of my main hopes is let men know it's okay to feel, it's okay to express, it's okay that we're not always sure how, but real strength is found in taking that step forward and bearing ourselves to those we love.We can all feel whole!

Vanessa Stockard recently visited the podcast for the 3rd time!Vanessa Stockard was born in 1975 in Sydney and spent her formative years in a small country town in the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. At 12 she returned to Sydney as a boarder at Abbotsleigh. After graduating from the College of Fine Arts (COFA) Sydney in 1998 with a BFA, Stockard launched head first into the avant-garde art scene in the bohemian village of Glebe.Stockard is one of the most dangerous artists on the Australian, and by extension, international scene. Her ethereal works of art are a window into the soul of a talented and complex artist, one whose legacy is bound to resonate well past her generation. The existential nature of her painting viscerally questions our concepts of social relationships and reality.Twenty years of introspection and experimentation, ranging over a number of media, have forged Vanessa's style and vulcanised her craft, enabling her to reveal complex misdemeanours, while simultaneously demanding the viewer's self-reflection. She deals with isolation and sadness with intimate care and attention.Vanessa is unhindered by failure, always continuing the discovery of things previously unseen, revealing work that is fresh, unlaboured and penetrating. The deceptive everyday nature of her subject matter belies hidden depths of relationship, feeling and emotion. One could describe her process as absence of thought, a freedom of construct, not unlike the stream of consciousness associated with authors such as Hemmingway and Thomas Wolfe. If light and shade were students, she would be their master. This skill, combined with a naturally deft hand and a determined use of perspective, imbue her subjects with gravitas. The artist refers to set design elements that often alter and morph as her piece progresses. She has said she feels grounded from her ability to draw from the benign surrounds of familiar life, infusing these images with a meaning that yields a meditative satisfaction.Stockard's oeuvre features many pieces developed without any direct visual reference but rather from memory, often incorporating domestic pets such as cats and dogs. Juxtaposing the anthropomorphic nature these animals are given by our society, she infuses the personification of virtue and vice into the everyday canine and feline status quo of our pets. Cats with their fluffy comical exteriors glint with an instinctive urge to kill and cruelly torment their prey, dogs with their providence of happiness, loyalty and friendship are flung back onto Churchill's menacing metaphor for depression. The Kafkaesque mindset behind such works is reminiscent of the existentialist authors like Sartre and Camus. Absurdism appears with cake imagery and its relation to a childlike nostalgia for happiness which may never be real, but rather imaginary, unattainable and unachievable. It's been said “pain is inexhaustible, it's only people who get exhausted…”One can never “have it all”, to be both the artist and patron. To intrinsically understand those things around us that others overlook is what we want from our artists, our creatives. They give voice to the profound mystery of the world around us, surrounded as we are with consumerism, pointless greed, deceit and dissatisfaction. There's no pretension here in these paintings, just spontaneous insight and beauty. Some art is said to speak volumes, but these works are more like innocent and delicate poems, whispering untold truths with an economy of words.Something Rather Than Nothing Podcast

Alternative tragic Americana, invocations for peace & judgment reshaping with bleeding heart stream of consciousness poems.Originally from Connecticut, before becoming a western transplant, Anna May is a singular artist whose songs bear a placelessness that lends to their timeless nature. The deep exploration of heartbreak and trauma has been an ongoing quest throughout Anna's work. Her lyrics have been heavily textured by a lonesome whimsicality that finds itself most at home in the vastness of the American West.Anna's music honors the nomadic spirit with memory, meditation & fresh interpretations of folk music and jazz influence. She honors a hope to enhance connection, humility, healing, and joy among people in the process of parting with typical genre rules.Anna's lyrical sensibility is steeped in wisdom, and layered with evocative musicality and metaphysical embroidery while eschewing the mainstream & parting with platitudes. Anna explores both estrangement and connection while taking cues from artists like Billie Holiday, Shawn Colvin, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen. As a yogi, pianist, teacher & poet, she masterfully blends all of her influences into her songwriting.Anna has performed at wildflower music & arts festival, treefort music festival, Boston arts festival, water lantern festival, trout lake hall, abbey arts in Seattle, Globe Hall in Denver, Salesforce Tower in San Francisco, Broadway Comedy Club in Manhattan, the Mint in Los Angeles, and many more.Anna May WebsiteSRTN Website
That place a lot of us call a second home – the boathouse – is on land with a long history. And the waterways we dip our oars in once provided sustenance. Know Where You Row is a campaign across the United States and Canada to explore the spaces and places where we row, which have been – and continue to be – the lands of the native peoples who, for centuries, have stewarded them. Join Lori and her guest, Jennifer Sapel, as they talk about our money mindset. Jennifer is the CEO of Utor Wealth, which primarily helps women financial decisions with confidence. Women can live a life of abundance as much as men do! But in that life of abundance, it's also critical to find ways to give back. How does Jennifer enable her clients to be in that position? Stay tuned. Here are the things to expect in the episode: What it feels like to grow with a negative association to money. The differences in messaging around money between men and women in media. Understanding how you feel about money. Connecting your identity to the people and organizations you support. And much more! About Jennifer Sapel: I've done my fair share of wrestling with money. Growing up, it was a subject wrapped in a lot of mystery and stress. As a type A first born, I initially went to the other extreme, dedicated to conquering it, I bought my first home at 21 years old. Then after almost two decades of working in financial services professionally, I realized I, and people like me, weren't the only one who needed a perspective change around money. We've got some work to do in most of our systems: education, financial services, and families….to make healthier decisions around money. Most of what we see and learn about personal finance are a series of quantifiable do's and don'ts. Many financial plans are just elaborate spreadsheets projecting different scenarios in the future. These are helpful tools that often fall short of acknowledging life is often messier than the neat cells of an excel worksheet. Along with Utor Wealth, I'm a wife to Kansas born Melvin. We live on a few acres in the PacNW with our two boys under age 3 (this is where systems are critical), two dogs (Jack & Jill), modest whiskey collection, and lego filled home. As a family, we love to travel, dabble in the garden, eat, laugh, ride bikes and host informal gatherings (at least pre/post pandemic) where we can do as many of these things at once. Welcome to the Ready, Row! USA podcast, as we continue regular broadcasts featuring the best of rowing news, programs, gadgets & gear from clubs and rowers across the country. Today's topic is Learn-to-Row (LTR) in honor of US Rowing's Learn-to-Row Day, June 1. We like to call it the start of Learn-to-Row MONTH! Our newest correspondent and today's host is Tara Morgan, founder of Seize the Oar Foundation. She’s also a Learn-to-Row evangelist, and a coach/member of the Vashon Island Rowing Club in Washington State. She joins regular correspondent Mark Wilson of the All-American Rowing Camp in DeLand, FL. Please check out our fabulous sponsors! Watch or listen for discount codes or visit Rowing.Chat/sponsors. Tara's Tips for Making It Stick HOST or VISIT A National Learn To Row Day event COLLEAGUES - TALK TO EACH OTHER - Check out my Learn To Row Facebook page LTR COACH SHORTAGE: We are in an LTR coach shortage in our community, a masters coach shortage in general in the PacNW. PLANT THE SEED: Learn To Row can take a lot of different forms in terms of approach (sweep vs scull, pick vs full stroke) and curriculum (setting/meeting goals, individual progress), length (weekend clinics to TRRA’s 6-month novice team). COOL THE JETS: I’ve never met an LTR who said they were taking the class because they wanted to be on a competitive rowing team and compete. CULTIVATE RECEIVERS: Working with the “receiving end” coaching staff, develop KSAs, or knowledge skills and abilitiesCOACHING GOALS: Find out the drills they should know, the rates they should be able to row at, the erg pieces they will be tested on, the extra practice they should be incorporating in their lives (stairs, running, weight lifting, crossfit, etc.) THE BIG PICTURE: In my LTR, I teach and nurture team just as much as I teach strokes and tech. FREE DOWNLOAD - Download here: http://www.seizetheoar.com/learn-to-row THE KSAs - Coach Tara also uses an internal document she’s created over many years of LTR called “The KSAs” or Knowledge Skills and Abilities. Ask her for it at Coachtara@seizetheoar.com Mark's Coaching Tips for Learn-to-Row: My approach to LTR is more focused on Learn About Rowing. I have some thoughts on this and how it relates to new people’s expectations. The LTR experience has several goals and needs to be clear at the onset of the program for the coaches, the club and most importantly the new rower. For the set of LTR coaching tips I designed for a club in NC this month, contact Mark@allamericanrowingcamp.com. GADGETS & GEAR for Learn-to-Row: MEGAPHONE - Hearing - there’s such a thing as “learning deafness” - absorbing LTR info for the new rower can cause them to not hear you from the coach launch. Use BLUE OCEAN megaphone if your community noise policies allow it. MEDICAL TAPE - Use this to put on the back of the rowers for their pair partner - messages of reminders, hope, encouragement or simple “3 SEAT, STARBOARD, BOW FOUR” to help them remember all the names we call them other than their given name. WALL SIT - Use this to wake up your rowers legs before they go out, because we all know they pick it up with their arms for the first 2000 stroke. And it teaches them to suffer willingly. And it’s measurable over time to show progress. FORCE CURVE display on the rowing machine. This gets 'em every time! OTHER: Pins/buttons/swag
