Alvarez graduated from Middlebury College in 1971 and earned her Masters in Creative Writing from Syracuse University. She returned to Middlebury College in 1988 as a full-time faculty member.Alvarez is a founder of Border of Lights, a movement to promote peace and collaboration between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.Alvarez's work has earned her numerous awards, including a National Medal of the Arts that she received from President Obama in 2014.I spoke with Alvarez on New Year's Eve 2014. I asked her to share her New Years Resolution.“Something that I'm really asking myself at this stage of my life with the time left me, with whatever skills I've cultivated over a lifetime of serving an apprenticeship, how do I want to use that skill? How do I want to marshal those resources so that I feel like I'm helping the next generation that is coming after me? … What are the stories we need to be hearing to come together as a human family?" she replied."It's those kinds of questions I'm at least asking myself and committed to in the new year and the years to come to try to understand and to work with.”

Rhina P. Espaillat was born in the Dominican Republic under the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. After Espaillat's great-uncle opposed the regime, her family was exiled to the United States and settled in New York City. She began writing poetry as a young girl—in Spanish and then English—and has published in both languages.Espaillat's numerous poetry collections include And After All (2019); Her Place in These Designs (2008); Playing at Stillness (2005); Rehearsing Absence (2001), recipient of the 2001 Richard Wilbur Award; a bilingual chapbook titled Mundo y Palabra/The World and the Word (2001); Where Horizons Go (1998), winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize; and Lapsing to Grace (1992).On Rehearsing Absence, Robert B. Shaw wrote in Poetry, “To Rhina Espaillat the quotidian is no malady … it is the source of inspiration. Hers is a voice of experience, but it is neither jaded nor pedantic. She speaks not from some cramped corner but from somewhere close to the center of life.” Awarding Espaillat the 1998 T.S. Eliot Prize for Where Horizons Go, X.J. Kennedy noted that “such developed skill and such mastery of rhyme and meter are certainly rare anymore; so is plainspeaking.”Espaillat's work has garnered many awards, including the Sparrow Sonnet Prize, three Poetry Society of America prizes, the Der-Hovanessian Translation Prize, and—for her Spanish translations of Robert Frost—the Robert Frost Foundation's Tree at My Window Award. [originally published on Patreon Jan 25, 2022; for the retarded theory that Guterma was a tulpa, see Penny Royal's episodes] Joined again by @Boyd_Beaver, today's the final episode on Alexander Guterma, where we discuss how Guterma fit into the Moe Dalitz / Roy Cohn connection. We discuss how exactly how sexually repressed Hoover supposedly was, the DoJ's attacks on the Purple gang / Desert Inn gang, and another Howard Hughes connection. Then we discuss Guterma's deals with Rafael Trujillo, and speculate on why the government's documents on this are still redacted. This leads us to Guterma's arrest and conviction for a variety of crimes. Interestingly, the feds wanted Guterma to snitch on capital flight from the Soviet Union. Then, we cover how Guterma structured his offshore wealth to hide it from the feds. Guterma tried to break into Resorts International, and then got into Kentucky Coal, doing essentially the same tax writeoff schemes as they did with oil decades prior. Then we get into underground tunnels - specifically Meyer Lansky's secret tunnels in Michigan. From there, we go Galaxy Brain and discuss how everything is a front.  Then, Guterma died in a plane crash in 1977 and go over all the connections we still didn't cover (the WCC, Fassoulis, Handsome Johnny), and how Guterma is a skeleton key for the eldritch monster we're up against.

In today's bonus author interview, I sit down with Moshik Temkin to discuss his most recent book on leadership: Warriors, Rebels, and Saints: The Art of Leadership from Machiavelli to Malcolm X.We live in a period of leadership in crisis. At home, and across the globe, we sense that unqualified and irresponsible individuals are being elevated to positions of power, strong men and autocrats are consolidating their hold on governance, and the people are losing faith in the prospect of a better future. How have we arrived at this point? And how can we correct our course? For the past decade, Moshik Temkin has challenged his students at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and around the world to grapple with the nature of leadership as part of his wildly popular course “Leaders and Leadership in History.” Now, in Warriors, Rebels, and Saints, Temkin refashions the classroom for a wider audience.Using art, film, and literature to illustrate the drama of the past, Temkin considers how leaders have made decisions in the most difficult circumstances—from the Great Depression of the 1930s to the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo and from the anticolonial wars of the 20th century to the civil rights struggle—and how, in a world desperate for good leadership, we can evaluate those decisions and draw lessons for today.

Rafael Trujillo was Generalissimo of the Dominican Republic from 1930 until his assassination in 1961. The violence deployed by his regime was extraordinary, with Trujillo's men murdering an estimated 30,000 Haitians in a matter of weeks in 1937, not to mention thousands of Dominicans across three decades, in what my guest today describes as the violence of the Trujillo plantation. Trujillo's story, and indeed the story of the Dominican Republic, can be read as a story of domination, perhaps suffocation, by the United States. The image of the United States as the Great Satan in the World, which can only do wrong, is a simplistic and misleading one, but it isn't difficult to see where it comes from if you read about the Caribbean and Latin America. My guest today is Junot Diaz. Junot is a Dominican-American author, who has written multiple novels including The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2008. He is also a Professor of Creative Writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his insights on the experience of growing up Dominican in the United States are fascinating.

We are back for season 3 with a coming of age story told in reverse. This episode we dive into Julia Alvarez's How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, the 1991 reverse chronology story of four sisters who flee to the United States from the Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic. As we look through Yolanda's eyes at the world of New York City and the Dominican Republic in the 60s, 70s, and 80s,  we dissect Alvarez's depiction of class, race, acculturation, and machismo.  We delve into the dynamics of sisterhood, boyfriends with ludicrous names, the ubiquity of certain aspects of adolescence, and  complicated families. We also learn that some of us are Sandies but some of us are Lauras. Finally, we are taking it to the streets, er... stacks, with our new Person in the Stacks segment and asking what tastes like home.

Welcome back to the Bill Bradley Collective, where it is a special bonus week documenting the intersection of Rafael Trujillo's rise to power in the Dominican Republic and the legendary career of baseball legend Satchel Paige. Trujillo rules the Dominican for north of thirty years, both officially as President and an unelected military warlord. Trujillo rises up the ranks of the Dominican military swiftly, despite an extensive criminal reputation and finds himself elected President in 1930. Trujillo oversaw one of the bloodiest political regimes in global history, aided by a cult of personality promoted by the leader. As part of that effort, Trujillo looked towards baseball as a means to reinforce his appeal. By 1937, Satchel Paige is a legend of the Negro Leagues, a rubber-armed fire-baller firmly established as one of, if not the greatest of baseball's blacklisted by segregation in the major leagues. Trujillo recruits Paige and a handful of some of the great black ballplayers in history, most notably “Cool” Papa Bell and Josh Gibson to play for Los Dragones, a team operated by the dictator himself. The circus of that season, in which the Dragones dominate en route to a league championship observed by a military firing squad patrolling Paige and his teammates, is detailed as the story's climax. It is as direct an intersection of sports and politics as can be told: brutal Caribbean dictator enlists services of natively segregated star ballplayers as a means of enhancing his public image. And that story is here on the Bill Bradley Collective.

Twenty-five years ago, Julia Alvarez published In the Time of the Butterflies, which was chosen as a Big Read title in 2010. Set in the Dominican Republic, In the Time of the Butterflies is a fictionalized account of the Mirabal sisters, three of whom were murdered by henchmen of dictator Rafael Trujillo for their resistance to his regime. The girls were known in the underground by their codename “Las Mariposas,” or butterflies. Their story was very close to Avarez's own. She spent her childhood in the Dominican Republic, but her family got out. In this podcast, Julia Alvarez discusses how In the Time of the Butterflies came to be, the rich source material she finds in her family's immigrant experience, and how her life as a reader led to her life as a writer.
