Clean, sober, and realizing his life’s dream of becoming a writer.Ed: “I felt that the worlds of fantasy and imagination were more real than the world around me.”“When you reach the top of the mountain, don’t curse the path that got you there.”First snack: Puchao Ramune and Puchao Cola – kind of like a Japanese Starburst. Chewy, the Ramune is kind of like 7-up or Sprite, but this also has kind of a soap taste. Not like bar soap in the shower, but like car wash soap. We all agree that it’s kind of nice and refreshing. The cola one tastes like Tab or RC or something, Michelle had to spit it out.World Market find by Ryan. Since one was red and one was blue, Ed thought we were setting him up for a Matrix moment.We touch on Michelle’s baby cravings and the wild stuff that happens to moms. She couldn’t be in the same room as raw meat. Deli meat grossed her out, too. But now a lot of things taste different.Ed gets us into the story of how he got arrested by the FBI. It was the result of a methamphetamine psychosis. He used to tear apart electronics, punch holes in his walls, he was sure he was being tracked and followed. He developed a grand, global conspiracy and he was at the nexus of it.Ed’s point: comfort and happiness are often not the same. Are brains aren’t wired for happiness, they’re wired for the familiar. Sometimes we pursue the familiar, even though it’s not making us happy.How does a smart guy who has heard all his life, “don’t use drugs,” end up using drugs?Ed’s wisdom, “Addictive behaviors are a false solution to a problem. We’re using that behavior to solve our problem. And even though it’s a bad solution, when you stop doing it, things get worse, so you keep doing it.”Snack #2 Sesame GIM – it’s is a seaweed snack – Ed likes it, Teeg loves it, Ryan thinks you should crumble it up and put it on top of a fish bowl. Teeg: “It’s tasty, it’s just not satisfying.”Ed, “I liked them, but whether or not I’d buy them, uh …”How did Ed make his comeback? “Amazing people inspired me to a path of spirituality, self improvement and service to others.”Whatever I’m doing, if I can look at what I’m doing and find that it fits into one of those three categories, maybe it’s something I should keep doing. If not, maybe I should change what I’m doing.On quitting drugs, “I quit drugs a thousand times. Every morning after a binge, when I was in a state of demoralization and self hatred, I quit, but staying quit was the problem.”Ed’s turnaround moment? The only clothes he owned was a fithly tuxedo that he owned because he’d been working at a strip club. He stumbled into a wedding reception at a hotel ballroom to get some food, thinking he’d blend in. In that moment, he realized that he’d missed the wedding of five of his best friends in the prior year, and that was the moment when he turned it all around.Last snack of the day, Ryan’s supplied us with Gin Gins. One of Teeg’s favorite things! They’re like a Werthers Original made with Ginger instead of Coffee. Ed’s a raw ginger fan, so he’s up on the ginger candy. Ginger helped Michelle get through her pregnancies on settling her tummy.
