Does everything happen for a reason? How much of our lives is left to chance, and how much of it is a reflection of our choices? I explore these questions in this week's episode and more. Larry and Michelle shared their stories of love and loss and, although their stories of grief are vastly different, there are a few things incredibly similar in their stories: The willingness to love and be loved. Listen to this week's episode and reflect on the choices you've made, the chances you've taken, and the beautiful gifts that you've gained as a result. I share my favorite takeaways and reflections from Ep. 52 with Staci Bartley and Ep. 53 with Tina Ginn, exploring the importance of learning from the past and having the forethought for preparing for the future. Life is messy, and we can learn from our messes, and we can clean them up, too. If we could learn how to re-frame the challenges of our lives by asking ourselves better questions, I do believe we would spend far less time emotionally suffering. Staci, through early teen pregnancy and three marriages, she's learned this the hard way. And, perhaps that is the way? The mishaps, hurdles, and pivots that we find ourselves in are a part of the journey. But, I guess the better question is: Why does it take so many of us so long to get the memo? Just as it takes us a while to realize that messes are a part of life and that we are capable of learning and cleaning them up and preventing future ones, so too, it takes us to learn a little too late how ill-prepared we are for tragedy or disaster. Whether you want to learn how to prepare for love, tragedy, or disaster, the last two episodes are for you, and this episode includes my highlights. This week I'm chatting with Tonya Papanikolov, the founder of Rainbo. Rainbo is a medicinal mushroom based line of supplements and functional foods whose mission is to optimize health and open minds with medicinal mushrooms. They believe that plants, food and fungi are medicine for the body, mind and consciousness. What I appreciate so much about Rainbo is how educating people on the healing power of fungi is so central to their purpose and that is exactly what we do in this episode! In this conversation we discuss: How Tonya's own healing journey turned her attention towards mushrooms, the definition of medicinal mushrooms, how mushrooms heal ecosystems, what mushrooms can teach us about ourselves, Tonya's theory about why they're trending right now and Tonya even briefly goes over the different tinctures Rainbo offers and their benefits. The world of fungi is so vast and complex that there's no way we could cover everything in this episode, but if you're new to the medicinal mushroom world like I was, I encourage you to check out Rainbo's website, where you'll find so many helpful resources about this magical, mysterious mushroom world.RESOURCES:EP 19: (Season 1 Finale!) We often find our purpose through our pain. Or are lead to our purpose through our pain. Either way, there's often a strong, deep desire to find meaning through the terrible life experiences we've gone through.I'm no exception to that, and many of my guests aren't either. Darren created AfterCloud, a "life-tech" app for capturing life's most precious moments and memories to make it both easy to do so, and in the process, create a legacy. It's also used in music therapy and has a lot of potential for many different types of scenarios. I could even see it being used by someone who wishes to document their rehabilitation process and journey after a tragic accident. They can then share their thoughts, feelings, etc., with whomever they choose. My other guest, Arielle, has found her work in Hospice care to be enriched and deepened by her life experience with grief and loss. Both guests, including myself, have found a way to turn the page on our grief. When we stop putting one foot in front of the other, that's when we get stuck on the page. We find ourselves ruminating in the story of what happened when we avoid digging into how it made us feel at the time. Furthermore, not delivering the communications to those who have hurt us, only further roots our grief more deeply into our hearts. The beautiful thing about grief recovery is that it enables grievers to turn the page, address all of those emotions, and deliver those communications without ever speaking to the other person. And, if the person has died, it's still possible! And, to me, that's the amazing gift of grief recovery - it's a means, framework, and evidence-based program for turning the page.RESOURCES:Ep. 49 | Darren Evans (MyAfterCloud.com/AfterCloud app)Ep. 50 | Arielle Arbushites FDA Approved Alzheimer's Drug InfoFrom The Unleashed Heart Blog | Grief is GriefFrom The Unleashed Heart Blog | Grief & Unhelpful Labels______Need help?Crisis Text Line provides free, 24/7 support via text message. I get really fired up when a podcast guest shares their story of, essentially, their emotional pain being dismissed. Instead of their pain being addressed when seeking help, their symptoms are "addressed." If misguided white coats started to flip that around, and look at the bigger picture and set aside the big pharma kickbacks, and become patient-centered, we'd maybe be in a less dire situation when it comes to mental health in the U.S. than we are today. Both Brianne and Jordan ended up finding holistic means of addressing their grief and trauma. And, they are the perfect examples that it is possible. What grievers also need to understand is that there is no magic pill. As Brianne shared in her episode (Episode 44), you have to dig through your shit to find your gold. And, as Jordan shared in his (Episode 44), he found that therapy and EMDR were what he needed and has since been off all meds that he was told he needed to be on (since childhood). Let's stop pushing the pills and let's start pushing for patient-centered care and holistic, unharmful ways to help people heal. Grief Recovery and Reiki have been my saving graces.AN INVITATION: Have a story of holistic healing of something specific that worked for you? I'd love to hear from you. Or, do you know of any medical studies that have followed medicated children well into adulthood? I'd be interested in hearing about that, too. On today’s episode, we’ll be discussing a very important topic, and that is how to get your team members to make decisions and take initiative to solve problems on their own. When business owners are asked about the best way that Tap the Potential can support them in having a better team, this issue is one of the most frequently requested. Listen in as Dr. Sabrina draws from her vast experience on the subject and takes you on a deep dive into how you can bring this about in your business, too, because there are multiple pieces to making this work! Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: The strategies that Dr. Sabrina shares today come straight from her upcoming book, The 4 Week Vacation (releasing October 2021), so you’ll be getting an overview of a couple of chapters! Remember that we are in a relationship with our team members and that relationship is a system. When one person in that system over-functions, it creates the opportunity for others in that system to under-function. When you change your behavior, it forces the others in the relationship to change their behavior, as well. How to help your team members step outside of their comfort zone: Be explicit with your team members. Acknowledge the effort and not the result. Properly equip your team members for success when it comes to making decisions and problem-solving. In order to be successful in delegating and having team members who take initiative, you need to be hiring A-players whose values align with the immutable laws in your business. If you’re struggling to hire A-players, you can read Dr. Sabrina’s book, How to Hire the Best, or sign up for the next How to Hire the Best COURSE. Learn how you can become an employer of choice! By delegating, what opportunities does this free up for you? Download your FREE Chart of $10,000 an Hour Activities for ideas on what you can be doing to add value to your business. Dr. Sabrina walks through your compelling vivid vision, immutable laws, field of play, and the “filter” questions. This is taught at a much deeper level in the Better Business, Better Life™ program. The Survival Trap helps to illustrate how the day-to-day decisions we make have long-term ramifications. “Q-Storming” is a process of brainstorming powerful questions that often leads to new insights and new possibilities. Remember, the questions we ask determine the solutions we find. If we don’t like the solutions we’re finding, we need to be asking better questions. Dr. Sabrina shares some “decision-filtering” questions that you can use with your team to help make better decisions. Don’t forget to celebrate the effort, rather than the result! State exchange programs for health insurance are one of the provisions introduced in the Affordable Care Act back in 2010. Under this provision, the federal government may subsidize some of your insurance premiums if your income is low enough. The new stimulus package passed by President Biden extends this provision to allow more people to reduce the amount they pay out of pocket for insurance premiums. In today’s episode, Grant covers how this legislation works, who qualifies for these benefits, how and when to enroll, and things you should consider before switching from your current health insurance plan. [02:47] The Legislation – Grant reviews the legislation that facilitates this opportunity and the motive behind passing this law. [04:03] State Exchange – How the state exchange program works, criteria for qualifications, and how taxes come into play when you receive the benefits of this. [10:02] New Updates – Grant reviews the changes that have been added to this legislation with the most recent stimulus package and some of the planning opportunities that come with the new changes. [13:43] Breaking Down the Math – Grant explains a couple of examples of the premium subsidies and how much money you might save by utilizing this opportunity. [16:53] Enrollment – Gant reviews the special window for enrolling in this program that expires on May 15 and why you should consider taking advantage of this opportunity. [20:46] Deciding Whether to Enroll for Exchange Policies – Grant shares his take on a few things to consider when deciding whether it’s a good idea to obtain a policy under this program based on your current healthcare plan and some other factors. Talking about end-of-life is never easy. And, receiving a terminal diagnosis (with a prognosis full of unknowns), is nowhere near easy either. Generational learning and ancestral trauma run deep in families. It's not even something I gave much thought to before becoming an Advanced Certified Grief Recovery Specialist. In episode 37, Angela shared how the lessons her mom was taught were passed down generations, impacting her life ten-fold. It takes courage to break the cycle of generational learning because it takes action and deep, internal work to address it. In this week's episode, I talk more about my takeaways and reflections from Angela's episode and also from Shandra's episode, where she shared about her memory loss. I share today, my reflections about the impact of not connecting the dots of our grief to our behaviors and about what's in a name. Angela and Shandra both had to find their way back home to themselves, in ways that required each of them to address what they thought was the truth. They found what was true for themselves and, in my personal experience of having done the same, have felt more at home in my own skin than I ever have. We are all just walking each other home (a quote I read not long ago). And, at the same time, finding our way back to ourselves, too. Getting clean and sober can be stressful. We try to do everything possible to help people going through recovery deal with stress. It's scientifically proven that exercise will help reduce stress levels. This is why we can't emphasize the importance of exercise enough in the process of getting clean and sober. Today’s episode is about exercise and why it is important to incorporate into your journey. Tom and Ben will be discussing this important topic along with the benefits of exercising throughout the recovery process and how exercise can affect your overall physical and mental well being. It can even have an effect on heart health and inflammatory issues. Show Notes [02:23] Stress reduction. Exercise is a natural stress reducer. It naturally correlates with the chemicals in your brain. It also gives you an opportunity to take your mind off of whatever you've been thinking about for the day. [03:42] Getting clean and sober can be stressful. There are a lot of things that you aren't used to doing that you now have to do while you're sober. [04:20] There is even research out there that shows stress can cause heart and inflammatory issues. [04:50] Exercise also incorporates into time management. Going to the gym right after work gives you an opportunity to step away from the stressors of the day. [05:46] If you exercise, you get better sleep. Most people in recovery are prescribed some type of sleep aid. It's hard to fall asleep when you first begin recovery. [06:52] It's extremely beneficial to wean off of the sleep meds, and exercise can help you do this. [09:57] Seroquel is an antipsychotic used for sleep. It makes you tired and makes you sleep. Tom became dependent on it. [11:29] Tom has to do something exercise-related during the day even if it's just going for some walks. It definitely helps him sleep. [12:15] In Ben's opinion, sleep medication helps maintain the addicts behavior and mentality. [13:11] While we're sleeping our bodies rejuvenate and repair themselves. [13:51] Improves mood. Exercising actually improves your mood. Exercise helps with the depression and anxiety that people in recovery frequently have. [15:45] We just built a gym and run our clients through a workout routine. We ask them to pay attention to their mood before and after the exercise. We frequently see people walk out of the exercise session with a smile on their face. [17:32] Opiates release endorphins. A runner's high is similar to the endorphins from opiates. It's the same chemicals on the brain. [19:48] Most people who get regular exercise aren't depressed. [20:10] CrossFit or something with a community workout gives people a sense of accomplishment. [21:15] We find exercises that we can modify for all of our clients. [22:06] Increase of energy. Energy capital. Even though exercising expends energy, by exercising you end up with more energy throughout the day. [24:05] Coffee and energy drinks are not the only way to energize. [25:26] If you work out you sleep better, if you sleep better you have more energy. It all comes full circle. [26:01] Exercise gives you a stronger immune system. It's important to have a strong immune system during recovery, because you don't want to get sick. [27:20] Exercise can help push out the last of the detox process. [28:49] Pot is fat soluble and can store in your fat cells. [30:07] Exercising as a whole will help with relapse prevention. [30:24] It's a challenge, it gives you purpose, it's something you enjoy, you sleep better and feel better. [30:59] Also add good nutrition and have a sense of community or a 12-step program, and you will be setting yourself up for success. [31:44] Tom just competed in a US powerlifting competition. [32:29] A big part of recovery is fellowship. [35:12] We have seen exercise work time and time again. It helps with mood and everything else. [35:47] This is why we incorporate exercise into our programs. We give people the tools they need and coach them through the workouts. In this episode, I dig more into the topic of faith and spirituality that Lizzy and I touched on in her episode. Communication and support were a huge influence on her grief, whereas, I share how my experienced differed, despite both of us having the exact same losses which occurred in the same order, too. From Margo's episode, I talk about how hope greatly influences our outlook. Also, because it hasn't been talked about a whole lot yet on the podcast, I wanted to talk more about grief in the workplace that Margo and I discussed in her episode. On February 5th, Katie is launching her new Brand Strategy Streamlined program, which provides content, coaching, and collaboration to define, align, and activate your brand strategy. When most people think of marketing, they think about promotion—pushing out your message to people and hoping they’ll decide to buy. But who wants to be “marketed” to anymore? Instead, what if we thought of marketing as connecting? For this week’s Real Food Brands Marketing Podcast, host and Food & Beverage Brand Strategist Katie Mleziva lays out a 6-step framework for the journey our end consumers go through – from when they first hear about your product to deciding to buy it, try it, buy it again, and (hopefully) recommend it to others. We look at all of this through the lens of connecting: creating a two-way conversation with consumers that gets them just as engaged as you are. In This Episode: Why we need to shift our mindset about marketing to think broadly, and from simply promoting to actually connecting. How to think about marketing as a two-way conversation throughout the consumer lifecycle. How to overcome the skepticism people might have when they first hear about a new brand. Creative ideas for driving trial and getting your product out into the hands of your ideal consumers. Why a purchase is only the first step in your long-term relationship with your consumer. How to turn a first-time purchaser into a repeat buyer and eventually one of the biggest fans of your brand who tells their friends. How a clear brand strategy can your products find their way into more carts. Alyce owns and operates the True House, which is a full-service interior design firm that specializes in residential design for busy young families. Alyce began her career in interior design after purchasing a fixer-upper with her husband. She describes it as a 1950’s rambler and learned so much, documented it and her business just blew up. She also has young children who are at home. She's a mom and a wife and a business owner. In our conversation, we're going to talk about family, seasons, success and what it looks like in different seasons. And then how to pour grace on ourselves because, you know, that's a lot to manage. Many of us are probably at home during COVID-19, at this point, listening and I can promise you are trying to manage. Many of us are now having to do a lot, along with being a business owner, and then a wife, a mom or husband. All of those things kind of combined into one is really a load to carry. Some of us have to carry it all the time and some only during times of business disruption. But regardless, all of this conversation I think will be super helpful in helping us prioritize, think about each season, align off priorities and make a plan forward. I hope you enjoyed the podcast. Jordan is back with another solo episode to talk all about her spiritual journey! She has talked about this topic in the past, but so much has happened since then, it was time for an update. Jordan recently wrote about on her blog (https://www.thebalancedblonde.com/2020/02/25/my-psychic-journey-recent-awakening-experiences/) about her psychic awakening and spiritual experiences, and ever since then, she has been getting questions asking her to dive in deeper! Jordan is feeling healthy as far as her Lyme disease goes — there’s still a long way to go — but she feels as if she’s reaching new milestones. A lot of that has been treatment plans from her doctor, but today we’re focusing on the spiritual side of it! In addition to that, she answers your questions about the Pleiadians, angels, ancestors, spirit guides, healing, and microdosing mushrooms. Jordan knows that she was meant to go deep with these experiences so she could share the experiences with you — you guys are ready for it. If Jordan’s story is completely new to you, be sure to check out the episodes linked below to get caught up! Thank you, Four Sigmatic, for sponsoring this episode! 082: Artistry and Design Combined WITH BRITA DEREMEE Brita DeRemee is joining us on the podcast today. She has over 30-years of experience helping clients create homes they love to live in. She is their trusted design partner for everything from renovations to custom home furnishings. Brita is passionate about leveraging art to inspire design and loves the collaborative and layered process. Her Swedish roots and modern sensibilities make her a natural advocate for craft and sustainability. She embraces the pragmatic and spiritual, the functional and the beautiful. Brita serves a wide variety of busy professionals, art lovers, dog lovers, busy families and empty nesters in Minneapolis, the greater Twin Cities area and beyond. Brita and I began working together a little over a year ago and it has been such a pleasure watching her create a business that suits her instead of having to shift who she was to fit into a mold. We will be talking about that process, embracing her superpower of ADHD and how giving herself the freedom to live and work outside of the box has been a joy. Topics Mentioned: Imposter syndrome Art Process Collaboration Key Thoughts: So many people tend to think, well, Michele's just a financial coach. I use your financials to help determine “Are you where you want to be, or are you not where you want to be?” - Michele (03:46) There's also something the world tells you, that art is something that's completely separate from the business life…that it has this place that isn't part of the business world. - Brita (06:29) I always wanted it to be about creativity, ideas, resourcefulness, definitely buying quality products and knowing how to use them well, but sometimes I could make a difference in somebody's home just by telling them to move something or to recover something as opposed to selling. - Brita (09:26) My whole creative spirit really doesn't live very well in systems and processes. - Brita (18:08) If you find joy in going in and doing X and Y, then by gosh let's build a business of X and Y. There are people who need that. - Michele (28:50) But one thing that you helped me with, is really embracing this idea that you don't give things up for free. - Brita (33:28) Then we know that the process we've created is the one that allows us to really focus on and being deliberate on getting the outcome that you and the client both want. - Michele (42:02) Contact Michele Email: Team@ScarletThreadConsulting.com Facebook: Scarlet Thread Consulting Instagram: @ScarletThreadATL Contact Brita Website: http://www.artistryid.com References and Resources: EP. 026 with Peter Shankman - Listen Today Faster than Normal by Peter Shankman Understanding Your Finances - Enroll Today The Designers' Inner Circle - Become a Member Today
081: AIM with Intent Methodology WITH MICHELE WILLIAMS On the podcast today, I'm going to be sharing with you the focus in my company on scaling your business. If you've listened to a lot of the past podcasts and blogs, you've noticed many of them were on scaling. Scaling simply means growing. And there's more than one way to do that. So my goal is to help the businesses, that I work with, implement business principles early on as quickly as they can, so that they scale with intention and not out of control. I hope you enjoy the podcast today. Topics Mentioned: Align Your Team Ignite Your Process Manage Your Money People, process, profits Key Thoughts: You don't have to have a business degree to be able to make this work. (02:52) First, my beliefs about myself changed. I started believing that I could run a business. (6:06) My mind was busy all the time trying to solve problems. I had lack of focus, I wasn't eating properly, I wasn't sleeping enough, just trying to spend those plates and my body started giving out. (7:07) Do you have the right people on your team? And more importantly, are they in the right positions? (11:31) As the business grows, the processes evolve. (16:09) We are here to create businesses that are long term sustainable, and our sustainability is a direct result of our gross profit. (25:13) But what you do need is a good business understanding and support. You don't need a full degree. Topics Mentioned: Integration Family Podcast Faith Key Thoughts: But as the business grew, I realized there was no way for him (Jeremy) to really be involved and help because he was gone so much he wasn't really part of things. - Chandler (8:40) And in the past, I would have found other tours and other artists to work for and fill that time but we just kind of said, you know, we created this business with the intention ultimately of coming together on it and it is our career. - Jeremey (11:00) You just hear that you don't go into business with friends and family. - Michele (16:19) Tag team on Friday. He'll take dad duty in the morning and I'll go work somewhere. Then we'll switch off in the afternoon. - Chandler (24:15) Sometimes I'll wake up, honestly, on a Saturday morning, and I won't have any work to do for my clients. But because I've been rested, I want to do something for myself and my own business. - Michele (32:13) I mean, I was profitable from the beginning and that my overhead was super low, I was making an income, but I did not have the long term, the long game really in mind. - Chandler (51:06) We weren't reckless, we've always been profitable, but we were not sustainably profitable. And I think I wish that we would have just started by taking a small salary and putting more into savings, which is what we're starting to do now. - Jeremy (56:15) Yeah, I don't think we certainly were made to be Island. - Michele (59:39) Contact Michele Email: Team@ScarletThreadConsulting.com Facebook: Scarlet Thread Consulting Instagram: @ScarletThreadATL Contact Jeremy and Chandler Website: http://www.peachandpinehome.com Instagram: @peachandpinehome Facebook: Peach and Pine Home References and Resources: EP. 009 with Cory and Anthea Click - Listen Today EP. 064 with Michele Williams - Listen Today The Designers' Inner Circle - Become a Member Today
079: Scaling Two Parts of the Business at Once WITH STACIE KENNEDY On the podcast, today is Stacie Kennedy of Atlanta Custom Interiors. ACI provides custom soft furnishings, upholstery, hard treatments, and dorm bedding to both the retail and trade. Stacie is sharing today in our Business Challenge podcast the question of how to grow two sides of her business at the same time. We talk about the right time to hire, and how to market to keep the new hires busy with steady work. Not something to take lightly. The focus is on timing, opportunity, and marketing. Enjoy the podcast. Topics Mentioned: Hiring Marketing Scaling Upsell Key Thoughts: The challenge, I guess, and it's been a challenge from the start is just continuing to grow the business and to keep work steady enough to maintain the employees that I have and possibly add another employee. - Stacie (3:43) You know, one of the hard parts here is exactly what you said - is forget who to hire. We know who to hire, but it's the when to hire and then the sustaining part. - Michele (8:13) The other stuff I do, on social media, it doesn't really cost anything. It's just time. - Stacie (13:22) We've quoted a lot of upholstery work, but it hasn't always come in. - Stacie (21:29) It could be that they were so shocked by the quote because some people think that reupholstery is going to be cheap. - Michele (24:41) I've never really thought about where I need to market my upholstery. - Stacie (37:26) Contact Michele Email: Team@ScarletThreadConsulting.com Facebook: Scarlet Thread Consulting Instagram: @ScarletThreadATL Contact Stacie Website: https://www.atlcustominteriors.com Instagram: @atlantacustominteriors Facebook: Atlanta Custom Interiors References and Resources: EP. 008 with Richelle Plett - Listen Today EP. 024 with Cynthia Bleskachek - Listen Today The Designers' Inner Circle - Become a Member Today

077: Dynamics of an Entrepreneurial Family WITH BRANTLEY WILLIAMS AND HARRISON WILLIAMS Joining me on the podcast today are my sons, Harrison and Brantley. They are in their 20's and have of grown up with me starting businesses out of the house for over 20 years. Many of you, after listening to the podcast with my husband Joel, asked if you could hear from my sons talk a little bit about how me being an entrepreneur or having an entrepreneurial parent had impacted them as kids. What they've seen and the lessons they've learned or taken is where we dive in. Hopefully, you'll have just a bit more of an insight into our, I would say, family entrepreneurial journey, and then maybe use some of these questions and go back and ask your own kids. I think you might be surprised at the answers. So glad you're with us today. Listen in. Topics Mentioned: Family Growth Structure Entrepreneurship Key Thoughts: I mean, I didn't really think of you having a job and working until you started this business. - Harrison (3:45) And that meant my work took a hit, I had been director of the women's ministry at our church and I stopped that I stopped all of my extracurricular everything so that I could do it. - Michele (20:10) There were nights I was sitting in the middle of the night in our closet, working. Michele - (21:56) When we’re at dinner, you're still thinking about work. Sometimes after dinner, you'll come in here and do more work. - Brantley (24:57) So it is nice to be able to stay in the same industry but to do different things within that industry. - Michele (29:07) Yes, being impulsive is the best and mom hates that for some reason. - Brantley (36:23) You have to find what fits you. - Michele (49:18) And the biggest challenge of being an entrepreneur and being a mom was balance and being present. - Michele (58:43) Socials: Email: Team@ScarletThreadConsulting.com Facebook: Scarlet Thread Consulting Instagram: @ScarletThreadATL References and Resources: EP. 048 with Michele Williams - Listen Today EP. 064 with Michele Williams - Listen Today EP. 073 with Michele Williams - Listen Today The Designers' Inner Circle - Become a Member Today
068: Transparency in Pricing WITH MICHELE WILLIAMS On the podcast today we are going to talk about transparency in pricing. We hear it all the time. The need to be transparent. I am going to tell you right now, there should be some boundaries around this - and spoiler alert – I don’t think we need to tell our clients everything. Listen to the podcast to hear the argument for being transparent in our process but guarded in our pricing. Topics Mentioned: Trust Transparency Value Thoughts from Michele: When I began in the interior design industry 20 years ago, the most common way of pricing was by doubling (or more) the cost of the product. There is nothing worse than a client asking to see all of your invoices, all of your time statements. The pleasure of the experience is removed when we share too much. Let’s move the transparency to a place that makes more sense for our industry and for the final outcome of the client. “Margins” and “mark-ups” are not bad words. There can be some mystery around your pricing. It’s ok! 060: Trust is What You are Selling WITH MICHELE WILLIAMS On today’s podcast we are talking about trust. What is it, how to tell if you have it, and why it matters. Topics Mentioned: Trust Fear Confidence Thoughts from Michele: Confidence is built on us trusting ourselves. Because your client is really engaging with you when they trust you. I trust my support team because they are focused on the same things I am. Acknowledging what you trust builds confidence. Once trust is broken it is difficult to get it back. We need to use common sense as we navigate business. I constantly work on building products and processes I can trust. And it takes time. She is the founder and principal of Right Meets Left Interior Design, an award-winning Manhattan-based full-service design studio. An avid colorist at heart, Courtney draws from a kaleidoscopic toolbox of texture, pattern, and color to create rooms evocative of one emotion above all others - joy. She has been named a 2019 Style Spotter by the High Point Market Authority and included on the 2019 list of emerging designers by Luxe Magazine. Courtney is an S. Harris brand ambassador. Topics Mentioned: Confidence Runway to Success Impact Vision Thoughts from Courtney: From day one, I had to teach myself this business. I was intentional about changing my lifestyle to match my income level. People underestimate how the creative confidence go hand in hand with the business growth. Be careful what you tell yourself. If I am not tracking something, it is because there is a fear behind it. I call marketing “New Business Development”. It’s important to keep a list of potential clients. You have to be very thoughtful on how you spend your money in business. Value your own time before you ask someone else to value it. Even though David was a "man after God's own heart", he also felt the sting of public rejection. His son, Absalom, turned against him and took a portion of David's community with him. To make matters worse, as David fled for his life with his people, a man named Shimei threw stones at him. He called David a "worthless fellow" and "evil" (2 Samuel 16:5-14). How did David recover from a past of murder, adultery, and rejection from his son and his people to finally return to as king once again? Listen in as Amy and Tammy talk about how we can overcome our not-so-pretty past and how we can be encouraged (and learn) from David's story. They discuss how we can choose to react when others are cursing or talking about us. Be part of the conversation as they share some of their own challenges in overcoming their prodigal pasts and how you can look forward, give yourself grace, and have a hope of the future. David was a guest we had on episode 12 last January. He talked about his journey from addiction to sobriety. That David was a totally different David than today’s David. After the episode, he joined the military, had a relapse, and became sober again. We talk about his journey and the LGBT recovery community. He shares how the military was a scapegoat for him, but it didn’t work out. He ended up getting discharged and going on a party bender right afterwards. He then went back to detox for a week and spent 90 days in Rock Recovery. He has been sober for eight months now and shares the entire story with us. Show Notes [01:56] David was here at the beginning of the year in Episode 12. He had a slip after the episode was recorded. He has since been sober for about 8 months. [02:00] David joined the military and had a mental and emotional relapse before the physical relapse. [03:03] Recovering addicts and alcoholics are some of the most accepting people on the face of the planet. [03:58] David about nine months ago talked about his journey and going into the military. [04:32] When he knows people are going to tell him something opposite from what he wants to do, he just doesn't talk about that thing. [04:55] In the back of his mind, he thought that joining the military would be a way to leave and use again without people knowing. [05:43] He discovered that the military environment wasn't the most supportive emotionally, plus he was being messed with for being gay. [06:09] The Baker Act means you spend a week in a psych ward and then he got a medical discharge. [07:15] After his discharge, he went on a party binge. [08:02] He was in the military for three months. [09:55] He did learn discipline and a code of ethics while he was in the military. [11:55] After his binge, he went back to detox for a week and then 90 days in Rock Recovery. [12:14] He has a new sponsor and has been sober first. He went through the steps in the book. [15:43] From David's experience, LGBT people want to be treated equal, but they want their struggles to also be recognized. [17:08] The common denominator between all of us is that all addicts have the same type of issues. [22:49] How some gay people may feel that making themselves vulnerable and showing who they are is showing weakness, so they use deflection to stay apart from the group. [23:39] Many gay guys take on the identity of stereotypes, because that's what society tells them is their role. [24:43] Doing the steps and finding a higher power can help someone become more comfortable with who they are. [25:35] You can grow from the steps. You figure out what defense mechanisms you use in your life with other people, and then you can change them and grow as a person. [26:03] Being vulnerable is a key step to recovery. [29:18] Things that we can't control don't need to differentiate us so much that we can't bond with other people. Our underlying experiences and emotions are similar. [31:14] If we look at our similarities instead of looking at what makes us different, our experiences are going to be so much greater. [31:19] If you get vulnerable, other people around you will get vulnerable. [36:36] We all have different issues. Gay people can have different issues in therapy, but a lot of us have the same issues. Everyone has traumatic events. [39:29] David tries to treat people the same and not look at them as being different. The only thing about being gay that sets him apart is that he's attracted to men. [40:41] Ben gets David's opinion on transgender people. [42:31] Ben also asks David about LGBT exclusive recovery meetings. David thinks these might be distracting. [44:55] While doing steps, people don't really have an idea about who they are. It's not the best time to be in a relationship to give love and respect. [45:38] Know who you are before getting in a relationship. [46:14] Exclusive meetings can be closing yourself off. [47:17] Gay men may be more prone to sex addiction. Sometimes people can get confused as sex as love. [51:03] It's very easy for gay guys to find hookups. [54:22] David suggests not to only hang out with people in the gay community when you're a gay person in recovery. Also, stay off of the dating apps. Open up and share your story. Use your drug addiction experiences as a beacon of light. [56:56] Ben is super proud of David, he is nailing quality sobriety. [57:42] Giving back to the community is what keeps him sober. Paige Fant is back to talk about what it is like to be married to an active user and what it is like being married to someone in recovery. We are joined by Adam Colling and Ben Bueno. Paige shares her personal experience with codependency and how it is important to love without being self-destructive. We talk about the importance of setting boundaries and finding outside support from 12-step programs like Al-Anon and AA. We also talk about achieving balance and each person being responsible for their own pain. Finding support and a therapist are also helpful when going through the process. Show Notes [02:54] Often times people don't know what to do when they're married to an active user, and they just retract and don't do anything. [03:24] A good place to start is by asking the question is this person willing to get help or have they ever asked for help. [03:44] A dry person is someone who has stopped drinking, but they're absolutely miserable and nothing else has changed. [04:00] Family members and friends are all responsible for dealing with their own pain. How they deal with it is very important. [04:44] Learn about alcohol and addiction and try to understand what your loved one is going through. [05:17] Sometimes it feels really good to relate to somebody that has gone through what you're going through. [07:23] The idea of Al-Anon is a place where relatives can gain support. It's a great place to find support but also find a therapist. [08:00] Boundaries and settling your emotions down are the most important things in this process. [08:40] The families of addicts experience so much embarrassment and shame and people don't realize that. There is also a loneliness to that that makes Al- Anon a safe and inclusive place. [09:21] It's about finding a good meeting that's the right fit for you with a wide variety of people in different stages of recovering. [11:12] Paige had some friends who recommended that she go to Al-Anon. She cried during her first meeting. [12:11] Paige was interested in someone who was in recovery. She was in Al-Anon for about 6 years, and she credits the health of her marriage to it. [14:27] Alcoholics can be very co-dependent, and they frequently move on to Al-Anon after their 12 step program. [16:19] Having an addict as a family member can take control of your life. This is one of the reasons why a support group is so important. [18:14] Paige became enslaved needing the approval of others. She felt like she had to please everybody else. She had to learn the balance and how to lovingly treat someone suffering from addiction without it hurting her. [20:39] Don't try to convince others to go to AA with you. [21:55] Alcohol and drug addiction has to be self-diagnosed. You can't tell someone that they need to go to AA. [22:25] it's Insanity to go to a 12-step program and not work the 12 steps. [22:47] The 12 Steps in Al-Anon are the same 12 steps in AA. [24:34] It's important to recognize major boundaries. You need to take care of yourself and live your own life independently. [25:53] It's important to step back and not make major decisions right away. [28:16] When someone gets clean their loved one suddenly has no one to help. Like the city he calls home, Brent Maxwell was hit hard a decade ago when the economy crashed. And just like his city, his grit, will and determination allowed him to survive and rebuild. Today, Brent is the Managing Director of IPS Realty, where he helps others invest in Detroit’s booming neighborhoods, mainly on the East Side. He constantly monitors Detroit real estate, allowing him to identify the edge of hip areas and ride the wave. On this episode, he shares more about his experience, the city of Detroit and his best tips to find emerging areas. Key Market Insights Transition is happening in the areas beyond Detroit’s central business district There was a talent exodus in 2008, but now people are moving back or investing in Detroit Outside of Michigan Ave, saw gentrification and West Village on the East Side has experienced dramatic growth Had amassed $1MM portfolio on paper in 2007 Avoided bankruptcy and decided to pay back debt on a monthly plan Started grinding, wholesaling and finding deals for other investors Not focused on the hottest areas, looking at the edge of hip and looking to ride the wave To find the path of progress, IPS looks at comps and data combined with the art of being apart of the neighborhoods, on the east side Most investors prefer the West Side, but he likes the East Side Areas in the primary parts of the city are at 110% of 2005 peak values Looking for values that are starting to percolate and seeing a curve with days on market, per sq foot costs, per door price Banks start taking interest in neighborhoods when homes begin to sale at $50k per door - allowing them to sell to homeowners For an investor, the difference between $100k house and $80k house is $20k, but for a homeowner it’s $110 per month Interest rates will go up and impact the market and may drive buyers who were looking at nice neighborhoods, may now look at adjacent neighborhoods such as Jefferson Mack With Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons, and Lions all downtown, there is a 50/50 chance for a sporting event any day in Detroit Detroit used to have 2 million people, now has just under 700,000 City has a 50 year plan for the land in Detroit and the market is shifted in influence by what the city wants to happen – think tax incentives Sit and watch for an hour to understand the property and block Many investors are savvy, but can get blinded by the numbers and projected returns on paper Multifamily has a mitigation against theft as there are still people living in an occupied house Prefer single family in B and B-minus areas D area is war zone and lots of blight, C has a few vacancies, but most have care, B are older houses, more frame, less brick, lots of renters, A is all homeowners, upper middle class Bull’s Eye Tips: Winning Your Market: Buy and Hold Tracking Market Changes: Check the market everyday Daily Habit: Check comps daily Resources: Ep. 14: Detroit’s Ruin and Renaissance with Jeremy Burgess Crain’s Detroit Best Business Books: Tools for Titans by Tim Ferris Digital Resources MLS Loopnet AppFolio Google Drive Dropbox Hubspot Tweet This: “Bloom where you’re planted” “For an investor, the difference between $100k house and $80k house is $20k, but for a homeowner it’s $110 per month” “Real estate moves slowly” “I can fix a bad house, I can’t fix a bad block” “Not focused on the hottest areas, looking at the edge of hip and looking to ride the wave” Places to Grab a Bite: Apparatus Room Connect with Brent: brent@ipsrealty.com 313-422-1333 Leave us a review and rating. Has someone ever told you that you need more discipline in your life? Have you told yourself you’re not disciplined enough? Most people, including myself, don’t realize that the lack of discipline and accountability is holding us back. Reframing our mindset to take the necessary action steps to correct it, we will start to see a positive change in our lives. Discipline is something that I have been working on for a while now. It is not something that comes easy to me, it is something that I have to work at every day. I have to be disciplined in how I spend my time and it all starts with small habits that I practice daily. There is no such thing as the perfect routine or perfect balance of life but by being mindful of our actions we can achieve freedom. Discipline is not negative. Discipline can and is a positive practice that is mostly attributed to our own success. Here are four affirmations that I repeat to myself to stay positive about discipline: * I find peace through discipline. * Discipline sets me free. * I create ease through discipline. * Opportunity finds me through discipline. Tune in to hear why discipline is all about reframing your mindset and being intentional about your daily habits. In this episode, I discuss: * The importance of redefining discipline for ourselves * The difference between discipline and punishment * Ways to create discipline in our life * Why discipline starts with small, intentional habits Sponsors: *Athletic Greens* | Try Athletic Greens whole-foods sourced nutrition.
