Anyone can tell you how the world has changed, but no one can predict what exactly the future holds. Host Joseph Backholm is joined by Aaron Renn author of Life in a Negative World: Confronting Challenges in an Anti-Christian Culture. In his book, Aaron unpacks the changes in society's perspective and acceptance of Christianity. He catalogs three periods of decline: the positive, the neutral, and the negative world. He also analyses how three different types of evangelicals have responded and will respond to the changes in culture. There is no set guideline on how to navigate this negative world but listen now on what can be done and how you can live according to the truths of scripture. In exploring the topic of love, this week's episode outlines the roadmap for which we have been made to embody love both by receiving and giving love with our whole self: heart, mind, soul, and strength (Luke 10:24-28). Today's question is: How do we love? If God made us as souls, with capacity, empathy, and reason, we have to break down each of these elements to better understand and experience the power of love. We will also look at the parable of the sower and seed as a framework for connecting our mind, heart, strength, and soul. This practical exercise of recognizing how we can access love in all domains of our personhood, is the foundation for experiencing and living out of God's love.  Resources:  Life of the Beloved by Henri Nouwen  Prayers of Kierkegaard - He Loved us First  Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Pete Scazzero  Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.

To kick off 2024, I return to our theme embodied and explore the origin of our belovedness found in Luke 11:24-28. This episode outlines the first of three questions that need to be answered to understand the love of God and how we are to embody such love. If we are called to love God and love others, it has to begin with our belovedness. This episode discussed God's emphasis on relational connection, motivated by love and founded on God's nature that moves towards His children first and unceasingly. With this theology of love, we discuss our response to God's invitation to be loved by him with the story of the prodigal son.  RESOURCES:  Life of the Beloved by Henri Nouwen  Prayers of Kierkegaard - He Loved Us First  The Return of The Prodigal Son by Henri Nouwen ASK CARLEY!Do you have a question or topic you want to be discussed on a future Q+A episode? We discuss the danger of black-and-white perspectives of spirituality which do not account for the complexity and coexistence held within our stories. With the help of Henri Nouwen's wisdom, we will walk through the practices of befriending pain and placing the whole story back under the blessing. Finally, we discuss simple exercises for increasing embodied living that reclaim our belovedness. In honor of International Women's Day, we are re-airing our interview with Dr. Averil Mansfield, Pioneering Vascular Surgeon and the UK's first female professor of surgery. She recently published her autobiography, Life in Her Hands. From a young age, Averil Mansfield wanted to become a doctor. But it was the early 1950s, and women were not expected to pursue a career in medicine. Against all expectations, Dr. Mansfield forged ahead and became a Vascular surgeon in the UK. In addition to her illustrious career, she has worked to support and encourage other women to enter the field of surgery. Dr. Mansfield was voted one of "100 Women Who Have Changed the World" and founded Women in Surgery, a Royal College of Surgeons initiative to encourage more women to enter the field.   Links and Resources: Life in Her Hands: The Inspiring Story of a Pioneering Female Surgeon About our Guest: Dr. Averil Mansfield is a retired Vascular Surgeon. She was born into a working-class family and was educated at her local primary and grammar schools in Blackpool and then at Liverpool University graduating M.B.Ch.B in 1960. She plays the piano and music has been a prominent feature throughout her life. She learned to play the cello in retirement. After graduation, she trained in surgery in Liverpool and in addition spent two years in the USA. At the age of 34 she became a consultant general surgeon first in Liverpool and later moved to London. In London she practiced as a vascular surgeon and later [1993] became Professor of Vascular Surgery at Imperial College and Director of the Academic Surgical Unit at St Mary's Hospital. She was the first woman in the UK to become a professor of surgery and to head up an academic surgical unit. So many think the world of finances and financial planning can feel too dull, too heavy, or too unnecessary. My guest Arwen Becker has a gift of making it come to life by looking at it from different perspectives. She went from playing Division 1 collegiate volleyball to becoming a Zoology graduate to changing the story around financial planning and making it sexy through her use of story and emotional connection. Has her industry left women out of the conversation too often? In this episode, Arwen tells us why finances don't have to be boring and shares how she learned the necessity of financial planning for yourself the hard way. We also talk about why women struggle with spending money in retirement and have different learning and nurturing styles than men that need to be considered. What you will learn in this episode: How stories affect your financial future If the long game really benefits your finances Why relying on your own discipline doesn't work Who is Arwen? Arwen Becker has always shown perseverance and given her best effort. Despite her short stature, she played Division 1 volleyball in college. Just a few short months after getting attacked by a cougar, she became a divorcée at age 24. With the end of her marriage, she sought a higher-paying job and after landing a position at a newly launched retirement firm, her career in financial planning took off. Over the years, Arwen has met thousands of women and realized there needed to be a focus on changing how women get treated within the financial industry. She created her training program in response, LIFE with Arwen. Through LIFE (Leaders Inspiring Female/Financial Empowerment), she helps financial advisors get a better handle on understanding how women learn differently, connecting through storytelling, and thriving with participation in women's events. Her organization also gives advisors the needed tools to succeed in their practice and brings national awareness to the issue of women's financial empowerment. Arwen has been co-owner of Becker Retirement Group with her husband Randy for over two decades. She's a national speaker, author, and podcast host and contributes to TD Ameritrade Network, Yahoo Finance, and many other publications. Regardless of your stage of life, or tenure in your career path, if your an entrepreneur or not, we all have to constantly work on building belief in ourselves in order for us to do ANYTHING in life. & honestly the more I think about it- I am more afraid of NOT TRYING than I am of failing, mainly because I KNOW I will fail but also because underneath that is the constant striving that I have towards building up my own belief muscle. Today I wanted to dig into three main ways that you can start borrowing belief until you can BUILD your belief on your own. I hope you get some EPIC takeaways & I can’t wait to hear what you think! “It’s gonna take you time, but what’s the freakin alternative? You’re not gonna give up on your dreams. Not You. Not this time.” Quotes: “I’m more afraid of not trying, and living a life of shoulda woulda couldas, than I am of FAILING.” “We’re instead gonna ask questions like, how good can I get? How far can I go? How many people can I impact? How many minds can I blow, including my own?” “Are you willing to suck until you don’t suck anymore?” “It’s all about the confidence deposits that you put in your bucket along the way in pursuit of where you wanna go. Welcome! Today's guest is Ryan Hamilton, one of the co-founders of the “Life of Dad,” a social media network for dads. He is changing how dads are represented in the parenting arena and is helping moms be more effective at sharing parenting tools and tips with their male partners. Let's jump into conversation with Ryan! What you'll hear in this episode: Ryan has been a computer geek/tech guy all of his life; he now sees his son following in his footsteps in those interests. Ryan works full-time in the advertising industry, but runs his business on the sides for dads. Ryan shares how “Life of Dad” evolved from a heart-wrenching personal story of one of the co-founders. The purpose of “Life of Dad” is to enable a father to share his story via social media. Ryan became involved in the endeavor during a tumultuous time in his life, when he was going through a divorce, job loss, financial collapse, and depression. Ryan began blogging about the darker side of parenting. Ryan discusses how trends and parental role expectations have shifted as dads have pushed for change. Many new resources and dad communities are making change and allowing dads to have a voice. Co-parenting has changed in today's culture of divorce; Ryan shares how he and his ex-wife make it work for them. Ryan decided to make the journey to veganism about two years ago, when he was depressed and suicidal. He began with being vegetarian, but then transitioned on to veganism. The “cleaning up” of his diet branched out to affect all other areas of his life. Ryan's advice to other dads is to stay in touch, never feel alone, and reach out to your peer groups.
