Festival 2022 Robyn Orlin
Every year there is one event that we look forward to here at the Biscuit. Personally, it offered AL a view to a sense of community they he'd never really witnessed before, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. The Belle Vue Arts Festival offers so much more. with exhibitions, poetry slams, photo competitions, opportunities for the whole community to get involved with a yearly scarecrow trail and of course (AL's favourite) the Open Garden Trail. Well today AL is situated at the opening event of the Belle Vue Art Festival's opening event "Lets Celebrate" on the riverside in between Greyfriars Bridge and Stop Café. The community had come out to listen to live music, ride on the Rickshaws and learn about what is coming over the next few weeks with the festival. AL speaks to as many people as he can to investigate who is involved and what we can expect. We also hear from special guest and good friend of the show Tom Howells aka #TalktoTom Please go to https://www.bellevueartsfestival.co.uk/ (https://www.bellevueartsfestival.co.uk/) to find out about all of the great events that will be happening over the next coming days. Citing safety concerns, Burundi bans rickshaws, commercial motorcycle taxis and bicycle cabs in Bujumbura, the country's biggest city. Drivers say the move will put thousands out of work. Also, Uganda's only licensed cannabis farm grows only for export, as use of its crop remains illegal in the country. But there are calls for more permits to be granted to smaller-scale growers. And we head to a sanctuary where orphaned and injured primates are nursed back to health in eastern DR Congo.

A talk by Amita Baviskar, Associate Professor at the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi University. As an embodied public sphere, city streets are sites for multiple exchanges between differently located people and things. This talk focuses on cows, cars and cycle-rickshaws as they navigate Delhi's roads, and on the people who own, use and seek to control them. All three have been the subject of strenuous efforts at regulation by courts, citizens' groups and traders' associations. Professor Bavkiskar interprets these conflicts as instances of bourgeois environmentalism, the (mainly) middle-class pursuit of urban order, hygiene and safety, and ecological conservation. She argues that collective action in the "public interest" by "citizens" concerned about congestion and the collapse of civic infrastructure constitutes a public that excludes the city's poorer sections. The talk examines state attempts to regulate the traffic between cars, cows and rickshaws, and concludes by arguing that complex interdependencies avert imminent collision and enable "the republic of the street"" to survive.
