On this special edition of the Munk Debates podcast, we are bringing you the best moments from the Munk Debate on media bias, which took place in the fall of 2020 in front of a crowd of 3,000 people at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall. This is a debate that went viral on social media - it spoke to a vast number of people whose growing distrust in legacy media was finally being addressed. Recent polls show that one third of Americans have low confidence in the mainstream media, while another third distrust it altogether. Canadian polls show similar numbers. How did we get to this point? Listen to this debate to find out. Arguing in favour of the resolution, Be it Resolved, don’t trust mainstream media, was the associate editor of The Spectator magazine, Fox News contributor, and bestselling author Douglas Murray. He was joined on stage by Substack publishing sensation, former Rolling Stone contributing editor, and investigative journalist, Matt Taibbi Arguing against the resolution was the internationally acclaimed author, podcaster and veteran New Yorker staff writer, Malcolm Gladwell. His debate partner was Michelle Goldberg, New York Times columnist and MSNBC contributor. Liberal democracy has long been credited with the West’s economic development, social tolerance, personal freedoms, and the rule of law. And yet, in recent years, it's been blamed for everything from growing inequality, environmental degradation, political polarization, and cultural fragmentation. Its critics argue that liberalism’s failure to meet the moment has fueled trust societies and given rise to populist movements in the US, England, France, Germany, and even Canada. Is it time for a new, animating ideology? On this special edition of the Munk Debates podcast, we seek to answer this question featuring the best moments from the Munk Debate on the Crisis of Liberalism, which took place in the fall of 2023 in front of a sold out crowd of 3,000 people at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall. The debate resolution was: Be it resolved, liberalism gets the big questions right Arguing for the motion was the controversial former British M.P. and cabinet minister, Jacob Rees-Mogg. He was joined by the American writer and columnist who has shaped a generation’s thinking on the important issues of our time: George F. Will. Opposing the motion was U.K. journalist, self-avowed communist and popular leftist thinker, Ash Sarkar. Her debating partner was the disruptive and thought-provoking American social conservative, Sohrab Ahmari, author of the bestseller Tyranny Inc.: How Private Power Crushed American Liberty. Aubrey Drake Graham, known professionally as Drake, is a Canadian rapper and singer born on October 24, 1986. He is a significant figure in contemporary popular music, credited for popularizing singing and R&B elements in hip hop. Drake first gained attention starring in the teen drama series "Degrassi: The Next Generation," after which he pursued a music career, releasing his debut mixtape in 2006. His early albums, "Thank Me Later," "Take Care," and "Nothing Was the Same," were critical successes that propelled him to hip hop prominence. Drake's recent EP, "Scary Hours 3," marks the third installment in his ongoing EP series. It was written and recorded over a span of five days following the release of his album "For All the Dogs." Drake emphasized that the tracks on "Scary Hours 3" were entirely new creations, not leftovers from previous sessions. The project was revealed through an Instagram video featuring Drake as a lone audience member at an orchestral performance in Toronto's Roy Thomson Hall. "Evil Ways," a track from Drake's eighth solo album "For All the Dogs," features a collaboration with J. Cole. This song marks their first collaboration since 2019's "Jodeci Freestyle." In "Evil Ways," both artists assert their status in the rap industry, with Cole opening the song and Drake finishing it solo. The lyrics are characterized by a blend of self-assertion and bravado, with each artist discussing their impact and legacy in the music industry. The production, involving a beat switch, was handled by Tay Keith, Vinylz, Boi-1da, OZ, Coleman Name, and FNZ. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This is a special edition of the Munk Debates Podcast. On this episode, we feature the best moments from the Munk Debate on media bias, which took place in front of a crowd of 3,000 people at Toronto's Roy Thomson Hall. The debate resolution was: Be it resolved, don't trust mainstream media.  EPISODE SUMMARY: Public trust in mainstream media is at an all-time low. Critics point to coverage of COVID-19, the 2020 election, and the Ottawa trucker protest as proof that legacy outlets like the New York Times, The Globe and Mail and CNN can no longer be relied upon to provide unbiased reporting. Activist journalists are using pen and paper to push political agendas while their bosses lean into the profitability of polarization. Mainstream media's defenders argue that their institutions offer an invaluable public service that alternative outlets are either incapable or uninterested in providing: careful fact-based reporting on important issues and holding the powerful to account. In a brave new world of “fake news” and “drive by” journalism, traditional news organizations are essential to democracy and a bulwark against corruption, misinformation and the private interests of the powerful. THE DEBATERS: Arguing for motion was the associate editor of The Spectator Magazine, Fox News contributor, and bestselling author of The Madness of Crowds, Douglas Murray. We were at the premiere of Raymond & Ray at the Toronto International Film Festival to speak to the cast about this tragic but humorous film. The actors were excited to share this film on the big screen. We spoke with Ethan Hawke, Ewan McGregor, Maxim Swinton, composer Jeff Beals, producers Julie Lynn and Bonnie Curtis, and the writer/director of the film Rodrigo García. Hawke gets a little sentimental talking about what it was like working with actors he has known for over two decades and how excited he is for him and McGregor, who he says both have "great roles." Hawke talked about how relatable this film is because most of us have had to deal with real-life trauma or death, and he hopes people walk away from this film feeling a little less alone. McGregor also spoke about a "kindred spirit" between him and Hawke and what it was like shooting this intense but funny film. McGregor is excited for the world to see it and remember how precious life is. Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Miranda Currier Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: “Raymond & Ray” follows half-brothers Raymond and Ray who have lived in the shadow of a terrible father. Somehow, they still each have a sense of humor, and his funeral is a chance for them to reinvent themselves. There's anger, there's pain, there's folly, there might be love, and there's definitely gravedigging. *Raymond & Ray will be screening all week at TIFF check out the schedule below, so make sure you head over to the website and purchase tickets: Monday, September 12th at 6:00 PM at Roy Thomson Hall, Tuesday, September 13th at 9:05 AM at Scotiabank 2, Saturday, September 17th at 9:00 AM at TIFF Bell Lightbox Cinema 1 Don't forget to follow us on Twitter @SilenceonSet and Instagram @SilenceonSetPod

Today marks the anniversary of the death of Jack Layton. He passed away from cancer on August 22, 2011, leaving a void in Canadian politics which will never be filled in quite the same way. Because Jack Layton was one of a kind. His message resonated with people so much that he brought the NDP party from 37 seats in the 2008 election to 103 seats in 2011. Under Jack Layton's leadership, the NDP became the official opposition in Parliament for the first time ever after the 2011 election. The quote for which he is best remembered comes from the end of a letter he wrote to the Canadian people in his final days. The letter concludes with the now well known passage: “My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we'll change the world.” Today on rabble radio you'll hear excerpts from Jack Layton's state funeral, held at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto on August 27, 2011. You'll hear Shawn Atleo, who, at the time, was the national chief of the Assembly of First Nations. He delivered a blessing on behalf of Canada's First Nations community. You'll also hear a welcome message from Anne McGrath, chief of staff during Jack Layton's time in office, and speeches by Stephen Lewis, a friend, humanitarian and fellow NDP member who was leader of the Ontario NDP in the 1970s. And we finish with Mike Layton, Jack Layton's son. Image: Elliott Margolies/Flickr
