Review #20: The Inner Game of Fingerstyle Guitar by Adam Rafferty

Is this one of the best or worst books for learning to play acoustic fingerstyle guitar? You can learn to play music by simultaneously using a variety of resources including teachers, online resources, and books. The Inner Game of Fingerstyle Guitar by Adam Rafferty is an inspirational collection of practical advice on becoming not only a better fingerstyle guitarist, but a better musician and human being in general.  This is NOT a method book with specific instructions and playing examples.  It reads more like a non-fiction novel that you would read in your most comfy chair.  The text is easy to read and flows well from topic to topic.  Every section will provide you with ideas to improve your playing, organize your practice time, conquer your stage fright, connect with your audience, etc.  I'd recommend this book for all skill levels, but especially for beginner and intermediate fingerstyle guitar players. If you are looking for ways to motivate yourself or to get yourself over a musical plateau, this book would be a great investment of time and money.  It is a great supplement to other instructional books, video lessons, and in-person lessons.  Spend 5 or 10 minutes reading prior to your practice session, waiting at the doctor's office, or while traveling. The book is organized into three parts: “Your Soul,” “Your Craft,” and “Your Listeners.”  Part One: “Your Soul” contains lots of ideas that you might find in a general self-improvement book.  Most of the advice is not specific only to becoming a better guitar player.  Adam recommends playing music that really speaks to you, focusing on your strengths, and setting goals with specific plans to achieve them.  Some of this may be a little “heady” for some readers with ideas of “musical truth” and allowing your subconscious mind to guide you towards achieving your goals.  Even if that's not your cup of tea, stick it out (you will likely find something useful) and you will be rewarded later in the book. In Part Two: “Your Craft,” Adam discusses how to actually improve as a musician.  He goes over the stages of artistic development, the ten areas of musical study (concepts like “what to play” and “how to play”), how to practice effectively, and how to get out of a rut.  This section of the book gives a great overview of what is actually involved in mastering your musical craft. In Part Three: “Your Listeners,” Adam shares some of what makes him so great as a musician and performer.  He provides practical advice on finding gigs, dealing with stage fright, and satisfying your audiences.  I love what he has to say about performing music that is both inspiring to you and entertaining for your audience. If you like what Adam has to say in this book, you should absolutely check out his recordings, his successful YouTube channel, his podcast (Fingerstyle Guitar Hangout with Adam Rafferty), and his online courses.  He is incredibly talented at not only playing the guitar, but at arranging popular tunes for fingerstyle guitar.  I personally learned so much from him through his courses and through an interview that I did with him around 5 years ago on Fret Buzz the Podcast. MM557 - Battle Fear - Nix Excuses Hello, everybody, and welcome to this week's episode of Motivate Me! It's Me! Time here on Motivate Me! and we are working on coming back from flat. Before we start, let's get into the right headspace. Let's engage in the idea that this is time where YOU are the priority. Let's take two slow, deep breaths to get us centered. Just follow me. Today's focus is: Battle Fear - Nix Excuses My goal today is to give you actionable steps that will help you identify your fears, control them, and dispel them, so you can get out of your head and into achieving your goals. So, fear… I understand fear. The night before the crew I'd hired came to town, I was having dinner with my daughter. She had come to spend time with me before I ventured out on my ninety-day trip to interview people in each of the fifty states about passion. I'm pretty sure I looked like a crazed woman during our meal. I was unexpectedly overwhelmed with fear. I'm sure it was the feelings I had of not wanting to leave my home, my husband, my daughter, and my new puppy. I'm sure it was because I was going to be gone for a long time. I'm sure it was because I was taking a completely blind step off of a very high dive. But mid bite of I don't even remember what, I just started to shake. The kind of shake that makes your hands tremble and your face quiver. And tears just started to stream from my eyes. Now, my daughter was 24-years-old, she wasn't a young child, but she didn't know what was happening, and it was apparent that my fear was scaring her. I remember her saying, “Oh my God, Mom.” Like, what's going on? So on top of what I was feeling, I needed to find a way to comfort her. I looked at her with calm and honesty and napkins in my hand, and I said, “Mackenzie, don't worry, I'm fine. What you're seeing is fear. Sometimes fear can affect us physically. I'm sorry, I don't want to scare you. I'm going to be fine.” And after a pause that included deep breaths and nose-blowing, I told her, “This is not a bad thing, and it's not a bad thing for you to see, because you're going to watch me push through this.” And she did. Whew. I get emotional just thinking about this. Now, my trip is an extreme example in many people's standards, but any of us can have a similar reaction to any type of challenge we face. Especially, I feel, when these challenges are self-induced. I mean, did I HAVE to put myself through this? No, I could have very easily stayed in my comfort zone. In any case, the first thing we have to do is acknowledge our fear - especially if we're allowing it to hold us back from achieving our dreams or goals. Many of us make excuses for why we're not doing what we'd really like to do, instead of identifying it for what it is: we're freaking afraid. We're afraid we'll fail. We're afraid of what others will think about us. We're afraid we're not smart or talented enough. We're afraid we're not young, pretty, or fit enough. We're afraid we'll look dumb, etc. It's important to know that the reason we stay inside our comfort zones all stem from our ego. Our ego communicates with us through our internal dialogue and uses the fear we create to control our actions. Two previous episodes come to mind for me when I think about the ego, so if you'd like to hear more on that, you can check out Episode 555, “Say No to Negativity” and Episode 550, “Experiment with Your Craft.” But the bottom line is that we can control the ego and the mind.

I've covered a lot recently on author platform this year, but I almost never talk about craft. It's time! If I wanted to rename this post, instead of How to Write a Bestseller it could be called Write Good Books to Sell More Books or Sell More Books with Your Craft. At least, a little. I literally have a master's degree in fiction, but craft isn't my favorite thing to teach. Mostly because it's subjective. I do sometimes work with authors one on one regarding craft, but I find the focus on selling easier for ME. WHY? Because authors are emotionally invested in their craft. So, discussing this is hard. We either think our books are amazing or terrible, and we have a lot of feelings on the subject. People don't always respond well when they ask why their books aren't selling and the answer is: your writing. OUCH! I know it hurts. I've sat silently through critiques in grad school while people shredded my work. Just ... destroyed. I got over it. Having a beer at the bar with everyone after helped. How do I build a million-dollar company? Better yet, how can someone build a multimillion-dollar public speaking company? Well, although I have done both of those things, I wouldn’t suggest anyone try to do what I did. I made every mistake in the book. In fact, every mistake showed me what “not to do.” Then, I’d use that lesson to get me closer to what “to do.”By the way, the reason that I am not the best role model for building a business is that I’m pretty hard-headed. It is both a blessing and a curse. Hopefully, if you are a business owner and you are looking to grow, you can use my example to help save you time and effort. I spent 12 years putting everything back into my business before I crossed the million-dollar per year threshold. However, I was able to generate the second million dollars in less than six months after that.Hopefully, a few of these lessons-learned can help you in your journey.Learn from Experts Who Already Have “Fruit on the Tree.”I was teaching a class in Boston long ago and was staying in a hotel out by Logan Airport. There were no restaurants in or around the hotel. However, the airport shuttle dropped me off in a little village that had three eating choices. One of the three was a barbeque place. Being from Texas, I’m pretty picky about my BBQ, but the line was out the door. While waiting to get a table, I began to read the press-clippings posted in the lobby.It turns out that the owner of the BBQ joint was a Korean Doctor who came to the US to practice medicine. Shortly after he arrived, he attended a meeting where the caterers served barbeque. He loved it. A few years later, he was traveling to a different state and saw a BBQ place. Hoping to get a similar meal, he stopped in. However, he was shocked that although he had ordered the same type of meat, it tasted fantastic but totally different from what he remembered. This started a 10-year quest to travel the US collecting BBQ recipes. He experimented with Texas brisket and Tennesse pulled-pork. Then he perfected the St. Louis baby-back ribs.When I was finally seated at a table, I ordered the brisket. I loved every mouthful. In fact, I felt like the food critic in the movie Rattatoui. The meal made me think of home. The point is that this Korean doctor didn’t invent Texas BBQ brisket. He just traveled to Texas and learned how to do it properly from someone who was already an expert.That is what I did as well.You Must Invest Time and Resources into Your Craft to Become the Expert.For those of you who don’t know, my college degree is in the Oil & Gas industry. My first big break was with Atlantic Richfield as an intern. However, at the end of the summer, I had to give a presentation and I totally bombed it. I hated public speaking and knew I needed help. So I read books, attended Toastmaster, and took presentation classes. Nothing really seemed to work, though. That is until I came across an expert in the industry.Eventually, I found a professional speaker named Mary Ann Smith who was offering classes to the general public. The fee that she was charging for a seat in her class was about what I made in a month. I was desperate, though. I had already tried so many things and nothing worked. Get in the Arena and Off Your Ass In life, there are two kinds of men and only two. There are the spectators and the men in the arena. The spectator is the man who is complacent, who is comfortable, who sits back on the sidelines and watches others on their paths to greatness, all the while doing nothing himself. He criticizes, complains, and makes damn sure that every single person within a 300 ft radius know his opinion on any given topic, but he never adds anything, he never gives any value. He simply watches and takes. And then you have the man who in the arena. This is the man who has decided to leave the sidelines and take his life into his own hands. This is the man who quits his secure job to pursue his dreams, who drops out of college to travel the world, who learns how to meet and date beautiful women, who goes through the pain of sculpting his body, and who truly challenges himself to live up to his potential in every area of life. Which kind of man are you? 2. Commit to Your Craft. Never Dabble While there are only two types of men in this world, for a brief period of time, many of those men will fall into a third category, if only for a brief moment. This man is known as the dabbler. This is the man who was sitting on the sidelines, and instead decides to stand up and put one foot into the arena. But whenever the competition edges closer to him and he sees the faces of his adversaries and smells the blood on the sand, he backs down, afraid to commit to his new way of life. This is the type of man who starts a business but never builds it, who begins a novel but never finishes it, who invests in coaching but never takes action, and who listens to all of the dating programs but never gets his ass to a venue to ask a woman out. Don’t be that man. If you want something, then commit. Don’t waffle on the sidelines, unable to make a decision. You either say this is it! This is my f*cking time to be who I want to be or you back down gracefully. There is no in between. 3. Invest in Yourself First  So many men who start down their paths to greatness hit a sinister trap called a plateau. They have been striving and striving for so long whether it is in their business or their relationships, but all of the sudden, they realize that they cannot progress anymore. Many men think it must be something is wrong with the vehicle that they are in so they abandon the relationship, start a new company, or quit the training program they were using. But what the true achievers realize whenever they are faced with these periods of stagnation is that all outward growth is a direct result of inward investment. If your workout program isn’t working (and it is accredited and proven), odds are that you are really the one who is not working. If your business is not growing, then chances are good that you not growing. If your relationships are failing, then the likely culprit is staring right back at you in the mirror. And the only way that you can overcome challenges and times like this is to invest in yourself. To achieve your outward goals, you must become the strong, grounded, powerful man on the inside first. Whether you need to start reading more books, listening to podcasts, investing in seminars, or hiring a coach, do whatever you believe is necessary to elevate your growth and start achieving on a level that you never thought possible. 4. Start Your Days with Positive Habits Almost everyone in the fitness and self-help world follows or prescribes some form of morning routine. And while many of these experts convolute the power of this habit by recommending an excessive number of practices or specific ways that you have to do things, the truth of the matter is much simpler. Every morning when you wake up, your goal should be to focus your mind and your heart on all of the good in your life. Think about how grateful you are for the people and the opportunities that you have in your life. Write a thank you note to a colleague. Tell your wife or girlfriend that you love her. Because once you have done something that puts you into this state of being, the rest of the day will flow naturally. When you are grateful for your health, you don’t take it for granted. When you are grateful for a spouse you don’t start the morning by arguing. When you are thankful for all of the opportunities in your life, you are unlikely to waste them and more likely to chase the day down with a fire and intensity that is rare is most modern men. 5. Be  Willing to Suffer for Your Goals  Here is a simple truth that most ‘gurus’ will not tell you. Success sucks. Because there is no way to achieve success without some level of suffering. No matter what you want, you are goig to have to go through some pain and some heart ache to achieve it. Whether you want a chiseled body, a full bank account, a loving relationship, or a deep spiritual connection, you will have to go through some pain to get it. And at the end of the day, you need to remember that behind every great deeds are thousands of hours of painful deeds that go unnoticed. However, if you are willing to face the pain, the rewards on the other side are worth it.
