Why?: Why do you think your teaching is authoritative? What?: Some teachers think their teaching is authoritative because of their position in the church. Others, because they know and communicate the Bible well. Some even think that if they speak in authoritative ways—whatever that is—that their teaching has authority. The truth is that we speak authoritatively when we speak with Jesus' authority. In Matthew chapter 28, verse 18, just before giving the Great Commission to make disciples, the resurrected Jesus said He had been given ALL authority in heaven and on earth. And in that authority, He was sending the church out to make disciples. In other words, Jesus has given us His authority to continue His work of making disciples. So What?: It is Jesus' ministry to make disciples who grow to look more and more like their Savior. He has redeemed them. Through His Spirit, He transforms them. The fact that we are operating on His authority rather than our own should keep us humble as we are used to carry out His work. Our teaching fails when we do it on our own authority. Our teaching succeeds when we rely on the authority of the One who commissioned us in the first place. So What Now?: When you start getting a little full of yourself thinking you are really special as a teacher, will you repent and humbly submit to the One who has real authority and who has sent you to His church with that authority? Only then will your teaching be authoritative.
“Every organ in your body is connected to the one under your hat”This is one of my favorite BJ Palmer quotes!{Side note: BJ Palmer is the son of the founder of Chiropractic and made huge moves to develop Chiropractic into what it is today.}I think it’s a really fun picture of our nervous system as the master builder of our bodies. You can’t interface and react to your environment without the nervous system directing your actions and responses.Which is why we love it so much in this office and make it our goal to support it as much as possible! But what about nutrition?Where does what you eat fit into this equation? If the nervous system is the master builder, nutrition (aka what we eat) is the building blocks. So…What kind of house are you building?Check out this video with Dr. Lauren for a little nutrition mindset!
Today we are going to focus on making the rubber meet the road in our life strategic plan by developing a vision statement. Sign up for this Saturday’s Webinar: Canning Green Beans Holler Neighbor Livestream Up In The Air This Week Story from last week: Dr Ken Berry - https://www.youtube.com/user/KenDBerry Primer on the Proper Human Diet (Which is not carb based) Described metabolic disease >>What I realized Operation Three Sexy Bitches Main topic of the Show: Develop Personal Vision Set: The difference between vision and purpose is both simple and complex: Your purpose is your why. Your vision is your so what. And both of them have some “how” built in. This is why we so often see overlap in these statements. But your vision defines your true north. It is the one flag you can set. I am going here so that these things will happen. And your purpose comes along to add “because this is why I exist.” Today we are going to focus on making the rubber meet the road in our life strategic plan. This phase will take some work as you go through it. I have found that it is much faster to come to a conclusion on vision if I have a coach poking holes in what I say. A coach asking the same questions we will ask in this podcast. And a coach willing to tell me “That is bullshit” or “I dont understand what you are trying to say.” So as you embark on this, think about who you can use as a sounding board. Two weeks ago, we agreed to build our own success no matter what our environment. We talked about it the day before the election. A day before people started calling for lists of Trump Supporters so that they could be tracked down and punished for their support. A day before the nation, once again saw an election that was so close that it was impossible to know who won. We are divided despite the fact that most of us want mostly the same things in life. We just think we are different. We think that our differing opinions are vast chasms rather than slight leanings. And once we are so divided, it is easy to control us by eliciting emotional reactions. And that is ScaryAF because you and I know that most will not wake up until it is too late for them. But you and I are different. We are willing to do the work now to set ourselves up for stability and success. We are willing to ask ourselves hard questions. We are willing to set a goal post, and to walk toward it no matter what the environment. We will take the steps we need to take to make our lives as good as they can be and own that we sometimes will make mistakes and have to deal with them. And we will stop blaming things in the environment when we stumble. Because that is a waste of energy. A waste of energy that you can use to get up faster and keep moving. Two weeks ago, we ran through developing a life purpose. Did you do it? Or was it just another podcast porn episode where you wish you would someday maybe think about getting started on something for you. I know you might be tired. Hell -- I am super tired. But even though you are tired. Take an extra few minutes to go back and work on that purpose if you have not. Because purpose is your why. Why? Why are you here? Why is your family here? This was the question you answered in our last show about developing your family or personal strategic plan. Or more straightforwardly: You answered your aspirational why. Holler Homestead’s Why: OLD: The holler provides an inviting, supportive place where hollerites can rejuvenate, learn, grow, and prosper as well as connect with people who are truly free. (It will be clunky, that is ok) NEW: The holler provides an inviting, supportive place where aspiring agorists and homesteaders can connect, rejuvenate, share best practices, and prosper together in freedom. Today is the day to embark on discovering your “So What” or vision and the process is much easier after you have a life purpose articulated. Basically you now know what you “do.” But what does it mean that you are doing this? We broached this topic last go around by asking what has changed in the world because of your family or yourself. The best way to find your vision is to keep asking but what has changed because of our work? Do people have better access to truly healthy vegetables because our farm is a local alternative to big ag? And because of this, what is better? Are people healthier? Is my local community more stable? And as a result of that, are other families providing value to the community because they are in a better place? You see how this goes? It becomes iterative. In fact, if like me you are the journaling kind, this is a great thing to write on. Always asking your self -- but so what? How are things better? What other things are better. Do this over a period of time until you have a collection of things you have positively impacted. It can be that your kids are a benefit to society rather than a weight. It can be that people in your community can count on getting support through the loss of a loved one. It can be that there are no longer stray dogs in your area. The key here is go back to your purpose and hammer on each element and bring in the SO WHAT factor. Here is how this goes for the Holler Family: Purpose: The holler provides an inviting, supportive place where aspiring agorists and homesteaders can connect, rejuvenate, share best practices, and prosper together in freedom. Elements: Inviting Place Supporting Environment Connection for aspiring agorists Connection for aspiring homesteaders Rejuvenation and Healing Best Practices Mutual Aid True Freedom The So What 1.0: The holler is an alternative option to ruling a society through violence, mob rule, and enforcement. (True Freedom, Mutual Aid) What is missing? (LOTS OF STUFF and the SO WHAT) Next Try: The Holler community supports prosperity so you need not rely on violent systems put in place to control us, and so that we prosper together. It’s getting there. Here is what we covered Supporting Environment Connection for aspiring agorists Best Practices Mutual Aid True Freedom Here is what is missing: Inviting Place Connection for aspiring homesteaders Rejuvenation and Healing For some reason, I am riffing on the freedom for this and not the rejuvenation. But if we are not healing and growing together, will we ever get where we need to be. This is something to think on, go for a walk with that in your mind. Journal about it in the evenings as you take some time to work through your vision. Talk about it over dinner. Challenge those around you to make this vision statement better. Then give it another go… Next Try: The Holler community supports healing and mutual prosperity by tapping into and connecting the resources and knowledge of agorists and homesteaders who wish to build an alternative to the violent systems currently used to support our society. What is missing on this one? True Freedom could be better articulated but it is in there. The sentence is too damn long though. From here, I go back and bold or underline the words that need improvement. For example, our “So What” is a negative statement rather than a description of the alternative. I would prefer to adjust that toward a positive description. On the other hand, we are witnessing a move, worldwide, toward a society that inflicts controls on we the people in order to serve a twisted vision that is disguised as the “greater good.” And it is kind of scary because at this point, they are saying what they want to do and people are not al all alarmed. Sort of like -- so we want to kill you and your friends slowly to reduce population so we save the earth. And that is scary. The pretty words hide what they really want to do and folks are just too lazy to figure out what things really mean. One day we may do a show on that. Like with your purpose, setting your vision takes iteration and sharing. When you get that clunky phrase as I have above, the next step is to let it percolate. Look at it every day. Run it by each other. Run it by other people. Ask yourself these questions about it: Does it force trade-offs? Can I take anything away and still retain the most important meaning? Did I just build an unintended consequence into my life (Like my example with travel) Am I lying to myself? Can I just say this without grappling around? Is this dead- assed simple and understandable? Once you have spent a week with your vision, you will find that it is a little different than it was before, but a much stronger (and hopefully shorter) sentence. And yes. ONE sentence. One for your vision, one for your purpose. There is extra credit at this point if it help you - the mission marrys in one sentence your purpose and vision. You do not have to have one, but some people find it nice to put in the extra work to get both their vision and purpose into one sentence. Next Monday, we will attack strategies, then move into 2021 goals. Make it a great week! Song: Wolf by Sauce GUYS! Today we are talking all about playing small. Now, this is something a lot of us do early on in our business but sometimes it carries well into our business journey, or it can even cut short our journey that we are trying to find our way on. The reason for this is that when we play small, we sabotage ourselves. Not intentionally of course, but we do get into a mindset of minimalism and even defeat. We keep looking for evidence of why we shouldn’t go bigger and find it because, well, that’s what we’re looking for. Whereas, if we were looking for reasons to go bigger and celebrating our successes, we could find that too. So what I’m saying, is that if we go all in, we have a better chance for success than if we play small. Of course, going big can be scary and require you to put yourself out there in a way you aren’t used to. “Small is easy, small doesn’t attract attention, small is comfortable, small doesn’t offend, small doesn’t raise eyebrows, small keeps that little voice in your head quiet, small doesn’t hurt as much when you fall – and small keeps you right where you are.” - John Jantsch, Duct Tape Marketing Now, I know a lot of you come to Side Hustle Teachers because you aren’t happy right where you are, but if you keep playing small, that’s where you’re going to stay. I want to emphasize that by going all in I DON’T mean to quit your job, sell your house, live off ramen noodles, and basically be a bag lady. Going all in means that you are standing up and proudly identifying yourself as a business owner. It means you tell people you know that you have a business, you celebrate your successes, and it means when people ask you what you do you say, “I’m a teacher AND I’m a business owner.” Now this can be a big shift but it is possible and it is so worth it. Here are some ways that entrepreneurs could be playing small. Number 1: You use minimizing language. One of the ways to look at this is called “upspeak,” and it’s when you turn every sentence into a question. It could be as simple as adding, “right?” to the end of a statement. Or it could be using filler words. But the worst culprit here is using “just.” “I don’t want to bother you, I’m just checking in,” or “I have this business, it’s just a little side thing I do.” See how easily we slip that in there to minimize what we’re doing, not to raise eyebrows like Mr. Jantsch said? We all want to fly under the radar until magically one day we can announce that we’re a millionaire but that isn’t going to happen if we keep minimizing ourselves. Number 2: You pretend your business is a dirty little secret. No one’s going to buy anything from you, whether it’s products or services, if you don’t tell them about it! Now, I’m not saying you need to DM everyone on facebook that you went to highschool with, nobody likes that person, but what I am saying is that you have to let people know you have a business. If you have a blog, share posts with your friends and family. If you have a business with physical products, let people know when something is on sale. You may not know what people want, but if you keep it from them, but if they don’t know what you have to offer, they’re going to go buy that something from somebody else. Number 3: You set small goals. Now the problem with many new business owners is that we set micro-goals, but those are the only goals we have. Micro-goals are those baby step goals that are supposed to be working us to something bigger. But these goals like, “I want to sell one thing this month,” or, “I want ten page views,” don’t result in much change and they aren’t going to bring success. There’s nothing wrong with setting these micro-goals, but they have to be leading to something. Maybe you set an overall goal of 10,000 page views a month but you realize last month you only had five. So maybe your first goal is 100 so you need to work toward that by sharing your post and asking friends to share it with someone they think might enjoy it. Number 4: You only focus on the worst case scenario. What if I tell everyone I started this business and it doesn’t work? What if I put myself out there but then have to later explain I’m no longer selling that, I’m doing this other thing? To all that, I say...SO WHAT? If anyone has followed my journey, you know that nobody's path is straight. If you start off one way but end up somewhere else, no one is going to judge you, they’re going to congratulate you for finding your very own “just right” business. So instead, try and focus on the best case scenario. What could go right? Success is different to everyone, so just think about how your life could be so much better if you reach your own level of success. As I said before, if you play it small, you hold yourself back from making big decisions that could lead you to success. So just to recap, instead of saying what you shouldn’t do, let me phrase it in a way of what you SHOULD do. Commit to going all in. Tell yourself and everyone you know, “this is my goal and this is how I’ll do it.” Replace that minimizing language. Catch yourself when you start using “just,” or answering in the form of a question. This isn’t Jeopardy. Own your answers, they’re from your own unique life experiences. Tell people about your business. Nobody can buy anything from you if they don’t know you have something to sell. Set bigger goals for yourself. They should stretch you and make you uncomfortable. Dream big. Let the worst case scenario worry about itself. Think about the best case scenario, spend your time there, and your whole perception of your business will shift. Brand new medicines tend to scare people. And their concerns deserve an answer. So: What are the side effects of this new vaccine? Will it work equally well for everyone? Was it rushed in the name of profits? How long will immunity last? And who's to say it's "90% effective" if fewer than 100 people in the trial actually got COVID-19?

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Phem over Zoom audio! For Phem, this self discovery has paid off. Over the past couple of years she has both been featured on and co-wrote songs with a slew of artists including G-Eazy, Machine Gun Kelly, Lil Tracy and Iann Dior. She has toured the world supporting artists such as Lil Xan and Grandson. Phem has also become a regular contributor in John Feldmann's camp, writing a song on The Used's Heartwork and most recently Jxdn's single 'So What'. It was her own VACUMHEAD EP released last year that racked millions of streams and gained her a cult following of teens inking her name on their limbs. And somehow she accomplished all this while remaining completely independent. Having remained somewhat quiet in 2020, Phem is now gearing up to release a series of new singles.Machine Gun Kelly and Audio Up’s four-part scripted Halloween musical HALLOWEEN IN HELL, which has hit 500K+ streams since it’s October 19th debut. The podcast and soundtrack stars Machine Gun Kelly, Tommy Lee, Dana Dentata, 24kGoldn, iann dior, and PHEM – who contributes vocals to a few tracks. The new three-track bundle includes “In Hell It’s Always Halloween Remix” featuring iann dior and PHEM, “Just Us Two” featuring Dana Dentata, and “Watch Me” featuring BigKlit. These tracks were released through Sony Music RECORDS and Audio Up Music, and are available now through all digital and streaming platforms. HALLOWEEN IN HELL’s finale episode is slated to release Friday, October 30th, with its final tracks set to drop on Friday, November 13th. The series will be accompanied by a four-part making-of documentary to be released as bonus content. Stay tuned for more.About HALLOWEEN IN HELL:A scripted horror musical podcast, just in time for Halloween. Rock legend Tommy Lee stars as the Devil, featuring original music and performances by Machine Gun Kelly, iann dior, Dana Dentata, PHEM, and 24kGoldn. On Halloween, Satan lures three performers to his sadistic game show in Hell where they must perform or die. The winner returns to Earth. The losers will play out their showbiz careers in fiery hellfire and damnation.About Audio Up:Audio Up CEO Jared Gutstadt explains, “Halloween, much like other major holidays, deserves its own entertainment tent pole. While a lot of people focus on Christmas, Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve, we really believe that Halloween is an undersurface time of year for folks to enjoy original content. I was always a fan of ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ and ‘Nightmare Before Christmas,’ and we believe we're creating an evergreen franchise that will allow us to unlock new stories every year with original music, possibly ending up in the realm of live or visual content. Machine Gun Kelly was an extremely logical and obvious partner for us. His brand pairs well with the season.”We want to hear from you! Today we'll listen to "It's Only A Wee-Wee, So What's The Big Deal?" It's a song about gender, written in 1981, and it's still sweeping the Montessori schools of the country! My old buddy Utah Phillips used to sing this one. He called it, "a full bore, overhead cam, spoke wire-wheels, no holds barred damn kids song!" I love playing it because it generates discussions about the ways that boys around the world have entitlements and privileges that girls don't, and how our patriarchal culture, besides favoring males, teaches our girls ways to manipulate boys in order to 'level the playing field' a bit. Fortunately, lots of these lessons are being rejected by all genders now! Hooray! Rev. John Adams continues our series entitled Jesus in Mark's Gospel: Who, Why, So What?
The sandwich has been around for thousands of years in some form or another. Do you know how many sandwiches the average person eats in a year? Or why some sandwiches are called subs? Listen as I explain some fascinating facts about sandwiches to kickoff this episode. https://allthatsinteresting.com/sandwich-history You have no doubt contemplated questions like: Why am I here? Or what is my purpose? Will my life really matter? What legacy will I leave? Listen as I delve into these and other questions with one of my favorite guests, Brian Greene. Brian is a theoretical physicist, mathematician, professor at Columbia University and authored several books. His latest is Until the End of Time: Mind, Matter, and Our Search for Meaning in an Evolving Universe (https://amzn.to/2GsvlKO). If you have ever pondered the meaning of life, you will want to hear what Brian has to say. Whenever you are trying to convince someone of something, there is one key ingredient that will make the process a lot easier. And a lot of people miss this completely. Listen as I explain what it is. Source: Mark Magnacca author of So What (https://amzn.to/3cT1De3) Why do we often run to hug people we haven’t seen in a while? Why do we walk slowly when we are sad? And this is really interesting – Parkinson’s patients tend to move slowly but they don’t have to. They could move faster and will move faster if there is a reason to. So what is going on here? What controls the speed at which we move? Reza Shadmehr is a professor of biomedical engineering and neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and author of the book Vigor: Neuroeconomics of Movement (https://amzn.to/3ladKpP) and he joins me to discuss this fascinating connection between what is going on in your brain that determines how quickly or slowly you move and why it is important. Rev. John Adams continues our series entitled Jesus in Mark's Gospel: Who, Why, So What?
MINDFULNESS AND COLLECTIVE SUFFERING God’s mindfulness towards us is a two way thing - God starts the process of mindfulness towards us and invites us to respond. And right there begins a divine process of inner wholeness and transformation. (Romans 12:2 - being transformed by the renewing of the mind). So What becomes transformed? – it is more than just behaviour - it is the consciousness of who we really are in union with God through Jesus. This consciousness is what captures the present moment and It fills the now with its fulness and focus. It is not simply hanging around in the background somewhere – It is front and centre in the mind. It becomes the eternal Now of our existence – always active. We develop in the growth of mindfulness with God through the challenges of life. We each have different personal situations to contend with; relational, financial, self-worth, general fears and anxieties. But the greatest challenge is not what the actual external situation is but the fear on the inside that needs to be faced and met with faith. Our state of mindful faith in these situations determines the quality of peace and stability in our personal lives. Otherwise life becomes a series of reactions because we are not in that settled place of mindful faith within ourselves and this affects the quality of our wisdom in decision making and the ability to recover from the consequences of our mistakes and from the mishaps that happen unexpectedly. When we are flowing in mindfulness with God we can not only find a place of peace within ourselves but a place of empowered faith in God that makes us more aware of his compassion for the pain and suffering that others are going through so that we can touch his compassion and be more effective in providing help and care and prayer. In this way we can come together in many places as communities of faith, love and care, being mindful of one another that we are all going through different things at different times at different levels, and being aware of a ‘faith safety net’ of common goodwill and care in the group. But - when the entire global community comes under a shared existential threat of common adversity and danger there is a level of collective stress and anxiety that intensifies each person’s personal challenges and causes a collective consciousness of unresolved hardship or suffering. It is felt or discerned as a silent suffering that seems to hang in the air over people everywhere as a spiritual energy of darkness and uncertainty. This causes an accumulation of distress, physically, emotionally, financially, politically and spiritually, as fear and darkness invade the minds of people. Light has to come into this darkness. It is at times like this that God provides grace for us to operate at a deeper level of focussed faith that his power is at work in the entire situation. At times like these there is such a thing as standing in the gap. The Bible says God looks for someone to stand in the gap for others on his behalf. Ezekiel 22:30 So I looked for someone among them… who would stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the whole Land (eres- earth), that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. This is the cry of the Father’s heart that was answered by Jesus almost two thousand years ago when he stood in the gap for us in his death and resurrection, and brought us into union with himself and the Father through The Holy Spirit. There is a story of this in the Bible that represents this standing in the gap principle. It is the story of Joshua when He led Israel across the river Jordan, out of the wilderness into the Promised Land. (Joshua is the Old Testament name for Jesus, Yeshua) Joshua 3:1 Joshua and all the people of Israel left Acacia and arrived that evening at the banks of the Jordan River, where they camped for a few days before crossing. On the third day officers went through the camp giving these instructions:"When you see the priests carrying the Ark of God, follow them. You have never before been where we are going now, so they will guide you. However, stay 2000 cubits behind, with a clear space between you and the Ark; For tomorrow, the Lord will do a great miracle."In the morning Joshua ordered the priests, "Take up the Ark and lead us across the river!"And so they started out."Today,"the Lord told Joshua,"I will give you great honor, so that all Israel will know that I am with you just as I was with Moses. Instruct the priests who are carrying the Ark to stop at the edge of the river."Then Joshua summoned all the people and told them; Today you are going to know for sure that the living God is among you and that he will, without fail, drive out the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites--all the people who now live in the land you will soon occupy. Think of it! The Ark of God, who is Lord of the whole earth, will lead you across the river! "Now select twelve men, one from each tribe, for a special task. When the priests who are carrying the Ark touch the water with their feet, the river will stop flowing as though held back by a dam, and will pile up as though against an invisible wall!" Now it was the harvest season and the Jordan was overflowing all its banks; but as the people set out to cross the river and as the feet of the priests who were carrying the Ark touched the water at the river's edge, suddenly, far up the river at the city of Adam, the water began piling up as though against a dam! And the water below that point flowed on to the Dead Sea until the riverbed was empty. Then all the people crossed at a spot where the river was close to the city of Jericho, and the priests who were carrying the Ark stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan and waited as all the people passed by. Joshua told the company of twelve priests (representing the twelve tribes) to carry the ark upon their shoulders. The ark contained the presence of God. The people were to follow this company at a distance of 2000 cubits. Everything that happened to them was a pattern for us to learn from in these days. The priests were commanded to stand at the edge of the Jordan River and God said he would do a great miracle and drive out all their enemies before them. The people were told ‘When the priests who are carrying the Ark touch the water with their feet, the river will stop flowing as though held back by a dam and will pile up as though against an invisible wall (all the way back to Adam!’).This was the work of God, not the work of the priests; all they had to do was to carry the ark, the presence of God, but they had to have faith that God would do the mighty miracle work in the world of the unseen. Their natural minds would have said ‘You are going to drown in there’, but they would have had no doubt that they were bearing the presence of God on behalf of all those people. Then all the people crossed at a spot where the river was close to the city of Jericho, and the priests who were carrying the Ark stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan and waited as all the people passed by. The people would never have entered into the Promised Land or entered into a new life under God where they could give thanks to have his spiritual blessings and his provision of fields and crops and houses. They had become used to struggling and straggling in the wilderness without hope or confidence – and now their time had come. But it required that the priests stood in the gap. THE STORY OF US TODAY.1Corinthians 10:11 Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. The people were told in that Scripture to keep at a distance of 2000 cubits as they followed the priests who were carrying the ark of the presence of God. The obedience of the priests carrying the presence of God and stepping into the turbulent Jordan river prepared the way for the miracle of God in stopping the river from preventing all the people to cross over on dry land into the blessings of the Land of Promise. Those priests were a prophetic picture of Jesus as our High Priest overcoming darkness and death for us so that we could enter into the fulness of the Promise of God in Jesus. What could this 2000 cubits signify? Consider the fact that it was about 2000 years ago that Jesus was born, but it was some years later at around thirty years of age when Jesus was baptized in the river Jordan and carried the presence of God in that river for all of humanity. His baptism in the Jordan river was a picture of his death and resurrection, just as our water baptism is described in the Bible.Romans 6:3 we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death. We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death: that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we can also walk in newness of life. Jesus stood in the gap for all of us so that we could be included in his life. In these days of global confusion and darkness God is calling for a people like those priests, to stand in the gap and to create a pathway for others to find light and truth and to enter in to a place of confidence and hope in the fulness of God. Today we can be that company of priests that can stand in the gap for others. We can carry the presence of God. We carry that presence in our hearts by faith. We are able to live in the two-way mindfulness of God, being conscious of his desire to express his life through us and with us.We can become the light of God in the midst of great darkness. What does it mean for us to put our feet in the Jordan like those priests did? They faced a huge challenge of faith; they would have thought they could have drowned in that turbulent river, but they trusted God because they had been told; ‘The Lord will do a great miracle’. We are following in the footsteps of those priests, but more than that, it means that we are following Jesus in our willingness to experience the cross in our lives, for ourselves and for the sake of others. Taking up our cross is that same kind of challenge of faith that those priests faced. It is the challenge of denying ourselves for the sake of being aligned to the miracle working power of God. This is because we know that the experience of the cross always leads to the experience of his resurrection. We find faith for his supernatural working in the world of the unseen for us, not only in our lives, but also in the challenging situations of those people in our world that we stand in the gap for. There are many people that you may have been praying for, that are struggling and straggling, but God wants to make a way for them to enter in to a new life of faith and hope and love. He hears the cry of the suffering hearts and he has made a way. There is still time for them.
Why?: How do you construct a Bible lesson based on The Effective Four? What?: The Effective Four are the four questions you should help your learners answer so that they might gain wisdom rather than mere knowledge from your Bible lesson. The questions are: Why? What? So What? So What Now?. The first question is Why? Why should they want to know the truth you are going to show them from Scripture? The second question is What? What is that truth? The third question is So What? How might the truth be applied to their lives so that they can grow in wisdom? Finally, So What Now? What transformation would they commit to as a result of the lesson? That's the order of the lesson—Why? What? So What? So What Now?. But, the lesson is constructed starting with the What? This is where you will spend most of your time in preparing the lesson. What is the big idea from the passage you are going to teach? Once you understand what the human author, inspired by the divine author, meant to say to the original audience, you can bring the truth to your learners. Then, think through how that truth could be applied to your learners. That's the So What?. The So What Now? is the way in which you will have your learners commit to being transformed. Finally, knowing where you're aiming, develop the Why? that will draw them into the lesson. Raise a tension that needs to be settled or ask a question that needs to answered by the passage you're teaching. So What?: In summary, you prepare the lesson beginning with the What?, but you present the lesson beginning with the Why?. This is the method of constructing a lesson so that you are, as the title of the book says, Bible Teaching for Wisdom. So What Now?: Rather than reading from a lesson prepared by another or presenting a lot of interesting Bible facts, know the truth that leads to wisdom and then teach that truth using The Effective Four.

Rev. John Adams continues our 'Jesus in Mark's Gospel: Who, Why, So What?' series.
MINDFULNESS – THE ETERNAL NOW I would like to talk about the practice of mindfulness today which is something practised by people of many belief systems. However I am starting with a Scripture that speaks about God’s mindfulness towards us, because that is where mindfulness originally came from . Hebrews 2:6 What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? (This speaks to all of us (mankind) and also Jesus (Son of Man)The root word for mindful in that Scripture is mnaomai (the idea of fixture in the mind - a mental grasp). So how is Mindfulness to be applied in practice?Mindfulness can be described as the practice of paying attention, with an intention, and in the present moment. People in our Western culture have been engaging in the practice of mindfulness for some years now. It is a discipline that helps people to stop anxious or distracting thoughts from coming into the mind, helping them to appreciate and pay attention to what is central to them in their here and now experiences and in the inner space of what is meaningful in their life. People use mindfulness as a tool for sharpening their focus of attention and efficiency in doing productive things or for engaging in leisure or creative skills, and also as a form of emotional therapy for staying calm in times of stress. It has generally become a psychological discipline that is useful for finding some order in a busy and agitated world. That is well and good and helpful but it does not reach the highest goal of conscious mindfulness that God has prepared for us. Our mindfulness of God does more than just help us to pay attention to the inner space of what is meaningful in our life, it puts us in touch with the source of all meaning in our life, God himself. So we have seen that it was God who invented the practice of mindfulness and we can see that he is focussing his full attention upon us with an intention of seeing us becoming the person we were created to be from eternity, and he has the attention, the intention and the eternal now, his present moment. And he wants us to get to know him and also to know that we are known by him, and can communicate with him at a level of close and intimate relationship – so it is a two way thing - God starts the process of mindfulness towards us and invites us to respond. And right there begins a divine process of inner wholeness and transformation. (Romans 12:2 - being transformed by the renewing of the mind). So What becomes transformed? – it is more than just behaviour - it is the consciousness of who we really are in union with God through Jesus. This consciousness is what captures the present moment and It fills the now with it’s fulness and focus. It is not simply hanging around in the background somewhere – It is front and centre in the mind. It becomes the eternal Now of our existence – always active. God wants us to know that we are known. God wants to help us locate that known self within himself in us – that is our inner source of power and love- the treasure in the earthen vessel. That is the wellspring, the fountain of living water. We can’t find it on our own, we are taken there by the Holy Spirit. John 16:14 he takes of what Jesus has said and of who Jesus is and reveals it to us. He takes us on this journey of mindful focus and intention. The Holy Spirit hears the cry of our heart to the Father which says;I want to know someone who really knows me and can help me find who I really am and who understands how I feel so that I can be who I really should be. That is powerful – and that is why David exclaimed ‘What IS man that you are mindful of him – are you that interested and focussed? Our life (as part of the human race, created to be part of God’s family) is about knowing God and becoming KNOWN! – Known of God; Galatians 4.9. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world(how can you lose that focus and get bound up in the darkness etc of the world) Being really heard is being really knownWhen a person really feels heard they are tremendously grateful. They feel like saying – ‘how wonderful to know that someone is beginning to understand what it is like to be me’ Can you imagine God feeling like this about us? God says; ‘how wonderful to know that someone is beginning to understand what it is like to know me and to be KNOWN by me’ This is how we feel when we understand that God is always being mindful of us and that we are known by him in all things. Can you imagine that God is hearing you and that he understands what it feels like to be you? That is the work of the Holy Spirit who knew what it felt like to be Jesus as a human being just as Holy Spirit knows us as a person in everything that we feel and understand. He hears the outpouring of our own inner conflicts, our self-defeating attitudes, and our harmful or careless relational conduct towards others. We have to know we are being heard without being judged, condemned, rejected or even evaluated for performance. This is because we are serious about knowing God.When we begin to understand this and believe this that we are known like this we are entering into a healing dazzling light where our darkness can be conquered. Entering into this two way mindfulness with God is our wrestle with God and with ourselves. Just as Jacob wrestled with God who was in the form of an angel, at a time when he was wondering what his life had been all about, and where was it going in the future. Jacob had been cheating and competing all his life, even trying to beat his twin brother out of the womb, and he ended up cheating him out of his patriarchal inheritance, and he had cheated his father in law out of the best of his cattle. But now he was heading for an encounter with his brother Esau who was on his way to meet up with him – and he was very very worried. Jacob engaged in that wrestle with God that God had set up and this wrestle was the time set for Jacob to come to terms with himself and who he was and to come to terms with God – and he said; ‘I won’t let you go until you bless me’, we enter into the same kind of wrestle with the same kind of feelings and with a heart of saying ‘I won’t let you go until you bless me’. I want to know who you know I am.Jacob was given another name by God after that wrestle. It was Israel. It means ‘you have prevailed with God’ – that means he stayed the distance and endured and hung on to God no matter what is cost him. It was an eternal Now moment for Jacob’s destiny. That is the story of inner transformation because in this encounter he actually prevailed against himself in his own inner being. He was touched by God on his thigh and his hip was put out of joint in the wrestle, and from then on he walked with a limp. That was the outward sign of his newfound vulnerability and humility. He was a changed man. He was known of God and he knew himself. The word for mindful (Mnaomai)in the Scripture comes from the same root word as ‘abiding’ -(meno).Meno - to stay (in a given place, state of expectancy): — abide, continue, to be present, That is what it means to abide in Him. Jesus said to his disciples and to us;John 15:4 Abide in me, and I will abide in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you abide in me.“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who abide in me (are ever being mindful of me), and I in them (ever being mindful of them), will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. So this abiding, or mindfulness, is always a present moment experience. You cannot be present yesterday, or tomorrow – only now – the eternal Now. Mutual mindfulness between God and us is our eternal destiny. Or does God want us to live eternally in a chaotic conflicted life here on earth? It is a creation at war with itself when you see the destructive storms, earthquakes, animals killing each other, and killing people, and people killing people and bacteria and virus destroying populations. This will not be the case in eternity – no more sorrow no more tears no more death. BUT Jesus said that in this world we would have tribulation, pain, suffering, conflict, but he said ‘be of good cheer, let a supernatural joy fill your life in the midst of all these things – I have overcome the world. That is what it means – That is the outworking of our two way mindfulness with God in the here and now – that is salvation – The Bible says we are ‘being saved’ and ‘Now is the day of salvation’ – even though Jesus did the saving two thousand years go – our faith appropriates NOW as a conscious reality. We can arrive at a place of faith where we can say that no matter what important or momentous things are happening I my life, the biggest thing that is REALLY happening is that God is mindful of me! It is difficult to take our attention off ourselves and our struggles and practice our two way mindfulness and abiding with God.There are some things that you will find good to be mindful of at the start of each day. Remember that God is still the same. He never changes, even if yesterday everything around you changed. His mindfulness means he cannot forget you – your name is written upon the palm of his hand.Remember that his love for you is an everlasting love, and the reason you exist is because he wants to share his love with you today. Remember that he can do all things, and that nothing is impossible for him; who created you, and the Universe, just for you. Remember that he only wants the best for you, and he will surprise you with his goodness. Tell him you will not worry or be anxious today, for there is no need for that – He will make life work out for you if you let him.Remember ALL this only becomes a reality when your mindfulness of faith is operating. Outside of that is the darkness of a shadowy world where chaos and anxiety take over the mind. we can actually hear God saying this to us, ALWAYS NOW, and we can really listen, and become mindful about how God truly feels about us. When we become willing to make mindfulness of God the centre of our lives we can finally find peace within ourself. There is a peaceful harmony in being a whole person. We also find hidden aspects of self that we have denied to our awareness, and each such discovery of our shadowy self can give us uneasy and anxious moments. But we can come to terms humbly and honestly with these shortcomings knowing we are not rejected but accepted. We live like Jacob had to live with his limp humble but prevailing into a revised and changing picture of self, a challenging, sometimes disturbing, but exciting and never- ending adventure in this present life. Consider these aspects of God’s mindfulness towards us in the Scriptures Hebrews 2:6 What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? Hebrews 13:8 ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.’ Psalm139:17 How precious are your thoughts (rêa – intentions, purposes) towards me, O God! How great is the sum of them! Isaiah 49:16 Behold, I have written your name on the palms of my hands; Jeremiah 29:11 ‘For I know the thoughts I have towards you, thoughts of good and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.’ Jeremiah 31:3 ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love, therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you to me.’ Luke 18:37 ‘There are things that are impossible for men, but with God nothing is impossible’ Psalm 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. Exodus 33:14 My presence will go with you and I will give you rest, for you have found grace in my sight and I know you by name. Philippians 4:6 ‘Do not be anxious for anything, but talk to me about what your needs are, with hope and thanksgiving in your heart.’
Why?: What is the one question that will turn your Bible lesson from informative to transformative? What?: Teaching is often considered a process of instruction in knowledge or training in a new skill. When we teach the Bible, we want to do more. We want people to be transformed by the truths they learn from Scripture. Here at Teachers of the Bible, we promote a 4-step process that is structured around questions that we label: The Effective Four. The questions we want to help our learners answer so that they will be transformed are: Why? What? So What? So What Now? The one question that advances most teachers from transmitters to transformers, that turns Bible lessons from information to transformation is: So What? We can show them the truth of a Bible passage, then we need to ask So What? In our book—Bible Teaching for Wisdom—we model lesson preparation using the opening verses in 1 John. The truth is summarized: "Real joy comes from real fellowship with the real Jesus." So What? What could the source of real joy mean to our lives today? This week? This year? The question—So What?—transforms the lesson by aiming to transform the learner, by pushing the learner to become wise. So What?: All 4 of the The Effective Four questions are important to the lesson, but the weakness in many lessons is the one question: So What? So What Now?: Will you commit to moving on to that one question, the So What? If you do, your lesson will turn transformative and you will be living out your God-given role as a teacher of His truth.

Next up in that rag-tag group of disciples is the infamous doubter and inspector of nail holes, Thomas. This guy gets a bad rap for asking follow-up questions, but is he a true skeptic or is there more to the story? Is his name really Thomas? Could he be Jesus’ twin? We, too, have some questions (and doubts) of our own. This is part 2 of our interview with Richard Garrett, author of The Kids Are Smart Enough, So What’s the Problem? Find an overview of his distinguished career in this story about Dick’s zeal for researching and promoting education reform. (The story was written for Purdue’s College of Engineering by Bill last year.) Dick’s book traces his growing concerns about problems in public elementary education. Those concerns led to extensive research from a business executive’s perspective, applying systems analysis skills from his background in engineering. Our interview probed not only the findings from that research, but even more current knowledge of education reform efforts which Dick continues to harvest and share. He has created an online gallery of videos for the general public, explicating what he has learned about educational-outcome statistics and various efforts to improve the outcomes. The videos are part of his “Elevate Teachers” website, which champions robust investments to help both teachers and students succeed.

He has lived on three continents and currently oversees strategy and global operations for a non-profit with hundreds of staff scattered all over the world. Virgil says, we have to “trigger-proof” our kids. You have to raise a child that can have bad things happen to them or people say mean things to them, and they are mature enough to walk away and be alright. If they are too easily triggered, they can’t become adults or effective leaders in the world today. Cultivate a thick skin and a soft heart. Equip your children with the emotional vocabulary they need to express themselves and they can identify what’s going on with others and are able to address these with words, not by physically lashing out. Develop young leaders with the 70-20-10 rule. Successful development is comprised of 70% experiences reflected upon; 20% guidance and input from other people like mentors, parents, friends; 10% content from books, videos, courses and other materials. Our children will learn more from actual experience than from what other people say and from learning materials they can study. Talking to people about their experiences and giving them materials in support of their experiences can help double or triple their learning. Your kids lives are full of experiences. Address difficult incidents in your child’s life and turn them into a learning experience with these questions: What? So what? Now what? What. What happened? So What. What was significant about it? How are you going to think about it? Now What. What will you do next time you are in a situation like that? As you have the conversation, notice the facts – what are the details of what happened? Discuss how these made you child feel. Finally, notice their contribution to the situation. This focuses their attention on their locus of control. You and your child cannot control what will happen to them in the future, but they can change how they will act in any given situation. These make for a magic conversation that will help make each experience a teachable moment for developing leaders. You can't child-proof the world, so you have to build adults. As kids, making friends was somewhat easy. It could be as simple as, “Oh, we both like Super Mario and Coco Puffs...Let’s be besties!” Not to mention, there was never a shortage of possibilities. The likelihood of finding a new friend was pretty high no matter where you went. So what happened? Well, the short answer is we grew up. Playdates and sleepovers became work weeks and running errands. As a result, we began to focus on the quality as opposed to the quantity of friends. So when it comes to the idea of building your Get It Gang, we understand your concern. So today we’re sharing a list of places where you could possibly find members to build your Get It Gang.So What is a Get It Gang? A Get it Gang is a group of people you are close with who are also trying to fight for their dreams. Please rate, review, and subscribe wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts!Check out our YouTube channel and remember to subscribe!!Catch up on some of our many articles on our Blog !!
