We're back live and I've got a guest this week or two weeks it just me. So it's great that I have got a guest again this week and what a privilege to have lenker cup of are with me today on marketing study lab live, first of all, Lenka thank you so much Samuel, do this. And joining me, of course, happy to be here. Thank you for having me. Excellent. So as the ticker at the bottom says, we're going to be talking about marketing, and social media, but social media events as well. And we'll come on to that in a little bit after you have just explained to the audience a little bit more about yourself about the wonderful world of Lincoln. Lenka Koppova Okay, so Hello, everyone. I'm Lanka, and I'm a social media consultant. And aside from running my own business, doing social media strategies, and content and trainings, I'm also the founder of Cambridge social media, which is an organisation it's a community for small business owners and freelancers where we all help each other. And we support our community with anything social media marketing related. And from there, we started with monthly meetups, which obviously, this year, is not as easy to run in person meetups. So we've turned our monthly meetups into weekly Facebook, live training sessions and zoom workshops. And I'm also the organiser of embrittled. Media Day, which again, this year going virtual. So it's a conference in November, and I'm super happy that Peter is running a session for us as well. Peter Sumpton Yes, so am I thank you so much for the opportunity to do that, really looking forward to that as well. And you'll see that over social in the coming weeks, but really super excited for that and to be part of it and to get to know a bit of your community as well, which will be really, really cool. Okay, so like I said, At the start, all we're going to do today is have a bit of a chat around social media events. So first and foremost, if people got any questions, post them in the comments, and we'll get around to them, or just say hello, or a shout out or whatever you want to do. That's fine with me. But so first Lanka, 2020 has been a bit different over the years, from from, you know, for the past 2030 years, it's been slightly different to what we used to. How have you had to Well, first of all, how did you make the decision to go ahead with your events? And secondly, what changed? You know, first, let's do one question at a time. How did you make that decision to do this? Lenka Koppova It was very interesting this year, because I run to in person events in the past two years. And it's kind of started as my side project with it just blows my idea after running a couple of meetups to be like, How hard could it be to run all day conference for about 200 people? How did you imagine? years in a row people loved it. But it was very stressful. So I was at the end of last year finished this event in November and it was kind of pondering what to do next. And I found a part partners, I found, you know, one of my business colleagues, Alex Hughes from shift T's who we've known each other for a while, and we had a couple of conversations about what I want, where he's heading, where I'm heading to be like, well actually sounds like a perfect partnerships. So then we nail down the plan, we were had a very ambitious plan for the third annual Cambridge Social Media Day, we plan to change venues go bigger and better. And we made an announcement first week of March that we're doing it, it will be bigger and better. And a week later, like what just happened? So we were back to the drawing board to be like, so what do we do? Do we postpone the oven and make do nothing? Or do we hope that it will be okay in November? Because you know, in March, it looks like it might be discovered. And everything will be okay in November? Or do we go to Safeway, we still want to do something for the audience. We still want to keep the momentum of year or the events doing we still want to celebrate. So let's do it online. And let's figure out a way to bring the best conference the best event the best virtual experience for people or communities online. Peter Sumpton Mm hmm. Excellent. So yeah, a bit of a no brainer, but still something that you really have to consider because I'm guessing the way you would lead up to that and will not necessarily lead up to it but structure it is usually different. So what are the differences that you're seeing? Because you're right in the middle of this now the differences you're seeing from trying to organise something that's that's face to face that's offline to something that is less classes virtual, I don't really like that phrase. Well, that's classes virtual. Lenka Koppova It's interesting because the feedback that we've got from the past events and the things that really matter to me during organising these events was the people vibe, the friendliness didn't come up, you're really the energy of other people, which is the hardest thing to do online. So when we thought about is, obviously I wanted to have great speakers, I wanted to have great content I wanted to make sure they were providing is relevant. It's timely, it's helpful. It's designed for our audience. But the biggest challenge was thinking about how we do we translate our values of really to community feel and positive friendly vibe online. And I consulted with a couple of facilitators, people who are like workshop hosts, and who had to turn their whole business virtual this year, to break down event to make sure did we pay attention to people's energy that we don't just overwhelm them with videos, and just staring at a screen, some time a wall or some exercises away. And it also we have a tool that supports what we do to support this feeling of online interactions. And it allows us us as much as we can to represent the real life feeling and look and atmosphere of in person event. And I think we found a solution, I think we find a pretty cool tool. And we plan the layout of the event, vertical layout to replanning virtual out for our virtual conference room and conference building. And we've planned a lineup and agenda of those two days with the mind of people's energy. And they're not only for them to learn some factual things, but to have as many opportunities as possible to interact, network meet, and build partnership, build connections, find people like them, because I always remember people coming year after year, to me from those conferences to be like this person that I've met, I sit next to, you know, we started working together, we started accountability group to get to where we started this, and I want this to translate on my event as much as we can. Peter Sumpton Yeah, I mean, it's, it's a big ask in some ways, but from a positive point of view, people have had at least half a year to get used to communicating more on on tools such as stream yard, or zoom, or teams, or you named 610 20 100 of them. At this moment in time, you know, we always got chairs and those back in during life would be slightly different right now I expect. And so with with the actual event, then I'm just interested to know, I mean, I do know, but it'd be good for people that are watching or listening to know that. So it's, it's a social media event. So the folks on social media fantastic. But that isn't just the topics that you're going to be covering. So why, first of all, if you could explain just a couple of the topics that are, you know, exciting for you, as the creator of the event. But secondly, why you covering topics that might not be specifically geared towards social media. Lenka Koppova So even though it is a Cambridge Social Media Day, and the main theme is social media marketing, I always tell my community, I always tell my clients that social media can't stay alone, not only marketing tactics can stand alone, you can't do just video marketing. You can't do just email marketing, you can't do just the SEO. It's all not only all digital tools, but all marketing tools and tactics and techniques, they need to be complemented to each other, they need to be put into a planning strategy. So that's where we do focus on social media, a lot of our content will be platform specific or social media content specific. But we then have other topics that are relevant this year is kind of overall theme is focused on customer experience, and delivering great customer feeling, customer journey, customer experience being online, which is what we most of us can do, but also thinking about how can you improve the current or foreign experience and the future of flight experience. And then we have couple sessions are looking at marketing automation and looking at building lists. Because no matter how much I left social media, I still know that built using social media purely it's building a house on a rented land algorithm can change, someone can hack your account, this can go wrong and out of nowhere where you're with nothing. So we do put a lot of emphasis on having your own website, having your own CRM, having your own mailing list and using social media to drive these other kind of communities that you have a bigger feel of ownership and if something happens, you have something that is actually own and you can then still connect with your community and customers and prospects. Peter Sumpton I'm so I'm so glad you said that. So I've got the way I explained that is. And this comes down to the old Olden upin, and the merge if you like. And, you know, everybody likes a bit of merge as long as you're not paying for it. And so I always explain it, in terms of that isn't really going to move somebody to purchase very much. But it's just 1% of what you should be doing. And if you have 99, or the 1%, that's a huge shift. So a pen alone with your logo on isn't going to shift people that much, but it's more brand awareness. And in the grand scheme of things, if you're doing other elements, including merchandise, that's a bigger proposition than just the one channel or the one piece of merchandise, which is exactly what your say, saying in terms of just having social media alone is precarious, because that changes. So you know, you have to really think of your strategy, which is, which is really cool. So this year is about customer experience, then. So let's just shift it towards social for this moment in time. And what kind of thing should we be looking at on social to generate a better customer experience them. Lenka Koppova So first things first, it's about being aware where on social media you're active, where you have accounts, if they have been used, if they not been used, then why you have them and just do a little bit of an audit to actually be aware where your customers might come across you. And if they come across you There is everything working if they learned and your Facebook page and send you a message will use it and he will be able to respond if not put processes in place to either close on account or make sure that it's very clear to people that you know, this is not your active platform to go and delete direct messages here and there email recall you never will be my first advice is just making sure that you look at all the potential windows and doors where people can kind of run away and mess on. So it's just about for me with social media, it is about not selling all the time. Even though Yes, we use social media marketing to promote the customer experience is all about them. It's about providing them with value, building relationships, connecting with them, helping them serving them, finding the pain that your customers and prospects have, and how you can use social media and content and social media to help them and providing value without actually being just buy from me selling or no one has signed up to LinkedIn or Facebook or especially places like Instagram, to be bombarded by ads and be sold to we're coming to social media to connect to get updates and get news to be entertained, to be hired. We're not coming there to see advertising. So it will see advertising, then it needs to serve us it needs to help us with whatever it is that we need to need to be interesting. It needs to be engaging. And it needs to be helpful. Peter Sumpton Yeah, absolutely. And it was interesting for me when you see maybe something that is on the surface dry and a bit dull and boring. And people think that, well, there's nothing we can say that is of interest, you know, we do whatever it might be. And I'm not I'm not picking on any industry here. But for example, we do insurance. So what the hell can we say? It's just it's boring, everybody has to have it. But you know, they don't really want it, we're just asking for their money. So they, whatever it might be, but even even that you look at, you know, compare the near car and go compare and all that kind of stuff. And it's most that's got nothing to do with insurance. So similar thing on social for small, medium, or large companies that it's not just about what you do, it's, it's about that brand and that culture and and pushing something to people that they will resonate with your audience like, like you were saying they're absolutely superb. Do you think that when people start to use different social platforms, there's that worry that they chase that new shiny thing? And are you a fan of just focusing on one platform at a time? Or would you say have a healthy mix? Or what's your what's your take on that? Lenka Koppova Yeah, I'm definitely suggesting people to be aware of trying to be everywhere and spreading themselves too thinly, especially audience in the community and working with where it's people who tend to do their own marketing. They don't have a big marketing team. They don't have too much time to do very really limited resources. So my suggestion always is pick one or two. Priority platforms, platforms where you know, did your target customers are, but also the platforms that you would enjoy. You know, using, there's no point of picking a platform that someone suggested because of demographic research, it's being said that it's more like most likely to have your target customers there. But you are just dreading and hating the user interface the way it works. We're on board ahead, you love being on Instagram, and you love doing stories and you love talking to people. And even though maybe Instagram is not the number one platform that you would expect your customers to be, still can work perfectly. And you still have these days, all the platforms have pretty balanced, you know, demographics, you know, all sorts of people on all sorts of bathrooms, I don't think it's like, very demanding to say like, only Instagram will work for your own Twitter will refer. But I would say pick one platform or two that you enjoy, and that you really can see yourself spending time on creating content for and in engaging with people on Peter Sumpton is probably something that you can resonate with. And that's that's FOMO. What would you say to somebody that that is, and again, is probably reiterating what you said, but what would you say to somebody that is say, focus on Instagram, and they're getting engagement there, and I was worried I'm missing out on Facebook, or I'm worried I'm missing out on LinkedIn, you know, what would you What do you advise them, like test the water or stay stay true to what you know, Lenka Koppova I would always say if you want to experiment, you can dedicate like 10% of your time to experiment and keep an eye on other platforms. I'm not saying that you should not be on all channels, you can have profiles and keep them kind of maintain on all the channels and really on deep dive on one platform. But I would say yeah, try to really appreciate the platform that you're using. Because especially like now, but it's been a trend in social media, social media networks are changing so fast. Even I can't keep up with all the new tools, new updates, new features, new days on all the channels. And this is my business, I can't imagine how you know, anyone who has a business whose focus is fotografie, flowers, consultants, anything else and doing marketing and social media marketing is just 10 20% of their time and how they can stay on top of all the new Instagram stories, reels, guides, HGTV live all the stickers, all the algorithm changes all the things and really be able to use and leverage the platform properly. Like today, I discovered in LinkedIn has a newsletter feature. Never heard of it before. All this is pretty cool. But again, LinkedIn is not my number one platform. That's why I don't know these things. But if I was, I would hope that I know about it. And I've considered it for my strategy. Peter Sumpton Doing I mean, LinkedIn is probably my main platform, and that I love it. But it can be as frustrating as hell because like exactly what you said they release things. And they only release it to a certain amount of people. And then that gets around the world. And it's like, why the hell Haven't we got this and it's only select month people and all that kind of stuff, which is hugely frustrating. But I don't get that feel from all the platforms that they really do that. You know, I feel that they're much more we've tested it and pretty much everyone can have it or am I missing something there? Is that the case on all of them? Lenka Koppova There's still box I think other platforms do it less today, once they decide to launch something they tested in couple countries and India launches globally. But like for example, I have five client Instagram accounts. On three of them. I have a new app layout on the rest of them. I have rails on my personal like create a business account I don't have rails feels the same with Facebook. Like I didn't have a new Facebook layout. It's never been switched to me I don't have the option to switch I'm like you don't like me Why? Why me? Why my personal account why my business like a why all my clients do have it and I can use it for them, but I cannot use it for myself. So I think LinkedIn is a worst. Twitter is also really bad in announcing new features. There tend to hide lots of the features to be like we've released something, but only if you know then you will know what otherwise you will not know like media studio is one of the best hidden features of Twitter and pretty much no one knows that it exists. It's like the best way for you to sharing videos and any kind of media on Twitter. Peter Sumpton Okay, I've never heard of that. Lenka Koppova Exactly. There's still not enough video content on which is one of the reasons Muito is still under utilised and there's a lot more opportunities for people to do more video content. But because Twitter has certain restrictions, and then you can't have this and that out of nowhere, people don't use it. But if you notice, there is a media studio where you can upload Oreo media, your videos, you can actually add a description and a clickable call to action to videos, you can shoot over there within Twitter, out of nowhere Mind blown, you get so much more with this platform. But as he said, No one knows this. Peter Sumpton That's, that's crazy. I've just I've just noticed I'm fairly new to stream yard. But if I click that, it's a bit better. We've got we've got more room. And I must admit, I'm obviously not at home. I'm in an office. And I've just realised it almost looks like I've just put this big, bright light all the way behind me. It's just a white wall over it just looks a bit startling. So I need to learn from that. Really. Sorry. Anyway, just a couple of shoutouts. Really so Phil's joined us. He just says hello. And then this thing. It's streaming, I got salty, but I think you need to GDPR stuff with stream yard. And that was it was that that was Tony. That sound that Hello. So hello. Hello. Anyone that's watching just out of interest. What's your what platform Do you enjoy using them the most. Lenka Koppova I enjoy Instagram the most I enjoy stories. I enjoy Rios, I really enjoyed it. It's very personal. It's very in the moment. It's really kind of real and authentic. And it's still you can still do great business there. But it feels very friendly. I do like LinkedIn. And they're like this year, LinkedIn has been fantastic in the amount of really quality engagement and support. It's been happening on LinkedIn. But I prefer like I do my own social media kind of interruptions mainly on mobile. And I just find Instagram is the most mobile friendly, and the most fun. Peter Sumpton Okay, but let's see, I don't use Instagram at all. I just don't I don't know, I think it's just that one too many for me. And just I've never really got around to utilising it in any way shape or form. But there you go. It's just your preferences. And there Lenka Koppova it is. And you know, I love it. Because part of it part of my lifestyle and my business brand. It is all about travel. And it is all about a lifestyle. And I love travelling, I love eating out. I love taking photos of these things. And you know, just the perfect and second place. And that's how I built my brand. People know that not only I do social media, but people know me for me, they know me for my hiking, or my dog. They know me for my you know, latte art and all the food I go to. And it's a thing that people will remember, as well as the date I do social media, so it's more likely for them to remember me really build the connection with me. And if they ever need me, they know they can find me. Peter Sumpton Yeah, and because I'm not on Instagram, I just got a glimpse of that. So So I've seen some of your photos. And yeah, you go to some amazing places, and it's really cool. Maybe not that many. Lenka Koppova I managed. I managed a little bit this year, and I managed to move where I am right now. Back home and the countryside in my family. So I managed to Peter Sumpton I'm just getting some feedback. It's like that's, I think that's my end. That's weird. Lenka Koppova Like, I hear people talking to someone else. Peter Sumpton I don't know, there's no one in this office. That's a bit freaky. Anyway, it seems Lenka Koppova like there's no one in this house right now. So it's got to be coming from me. Peter Sumpton That's a bit scary. Yeah, there's literally nobody in this office. Anyway, okay. Let's move on. Let's just blame that on Instagram. And then this, this is a really, really big question for me. Okay. So and I hear this a lot and I've got my own answer to this, but you deal with a lot, lot more smaller businesses than I do. People must one of the questions you must get asked a lot is I just don't have the time to do it. So what I say to people that that say I haven't got the time. Lenka Koppova Um, I would say to people who don't have the time, you know, consider what it can do for you consider what benefits why would you use it, it's not using social media for the sake of using social media. If you want to use social media just to be on social media, then it's not ill advice. But social media should be a reason for using it or should be a reason to repurpose, you should be using strategically. So it's always an excuse, I don't have time to go to gym, I don't have time to eat healthy, I don't have properties. Like if I know the goal, if I know why am I doing it not just because everyone telling me and I see on Instagram, you should be going to gym. But if I want to feel better, I want to be healthier, if I want to be more capable, then I will exercise I will eat. And the same goes for social media. If you want social media marketing to work for you, if you see it as a helpful beneficial tool that can help your business to grow can help you to get the lifestyle that you want, that can give you this time and space and freedom and revenue that you want. And you will make it a priority to put a plan in place, pick a metaphor, and invest the time into it. And I would say to social media, especially at the beginning feels like a big time commitment and a big investment. And it definitely is something that you will have to do forever and ever. But at the same time, if you build it in this time, then over time eight will be much easier to keep it ticking over if you keep it activated, to keep deletes coming through there. So it will become your second nature, you will figure out the processes. And actually, if you put an investment in then it will really help you. It has the potential to help you to have the business and the life that you want. Hmm, Peter Sumpton yeah, I agree. And I might take work, particularly when I'm teaching. And people all have busy lives. And you know that they're working, they're studying, they want some sort of social life. And so I've got no time. And the first thing I say to them, is because sometimes you need that commitment. Particularly if you're going to add something extra to your life, either Something has to move and shift, or you need to find that time somewhere. So I always say, Okay, so what did you do last weekend? And usually the answer is either Netflix or chilled out or did something. And I'm just like, Well, there you go. Just take just and I'm not advocating working over weekends, everyone's got a different preference. Or it's almost like, okay, we'll take half an hour out of your evening or half an hour out of a Saturday and Sunday. You've clawed back. What that's that's like three to four hours a week, just for half an hour each evening, or in the morning, get an extra half hour. And it doesn't have to be that all because like you said, socials, huge, it's daunting, how do I cover everything, just start small, just just don't cover everything, just start small, there's always ways to find time. Lenka Koppova Yeah, I would say if it really is such a big thing, and you don't have really don't have the opportunity to put the time aside to really build a strong plan and strategy. And you really want to do something, the best thing you can do on social media, it's be present. So even if it's that you don't have the time to really create content and put all the effort in to do videos, do training, do blog posts, do this because yes, it can be time consuming. Even if all you can do is spend five minutes with your coffee in the morning or after your lunch break. Instead of watching Tic Tock and YouTube videos, spend the time go to whichever platform and look what other people have posted. Find the people who are your ideal customers, follow them, connect with them comment on their stuff here, just dm them and start building the relationship seed as you're building friendships like the same way to check in on your family. And you would check it in your friends. build this habit of checking in on your social media community. And even this just very passively without pushing content out there. But kind of proactively reaching out to people connecting with them. Even if you just comment on their stuff. We share their content, you know, give them a thumbs up and give them a lift up. That's an amazing time investment that will pay off for your business. Peter Sumpton Yeah, I completely agree. It's, I always try to explain it to people as you need to see these platforms. If you're a business owner or you're in business or you want to use it from that respect. You need to see them very differently to what you have been seeing them because they're not like you said it's not you're not going on there to aid say socialised. You're not going on there to use it for what it was built for. You're going on there to engage in a very, very different way. And you need to it's a complete different mind shift for some people. And as soon as you see that mind shift As soon as you see that difference, the platform's become very different places. Like I've met some amazing people, you know, I mean, you purely through LinkedIn, and probably through through somebody else, LinkedIn. And it's just it's that craziness. And and if I was on there just for watching videos or consuming the content, I've simply, I wouldn't be speaking to you right now. And that's that's that will be a sad world. Lenka Koppova Exactly. It's really unlock so much opportunities business wise, like, obviously most of my business comes from social comes from being on social media, but it is less about the content that I put out there even though yes, I do put books and I have ebooks and no, I do video training. But it then comes to me just showing up to when people post something when I see the day do something that they cried, and I'm just like commenting and sharing and liking. They remember that they remember how that made them feel that someone gave and comes up with someone supported them. And if they then need your help, they're more likely to come to you. So is really helpful if you just build relationships and help others genuinely. Peter Sumpton And like you said, Just you don't even have to push yourself just just get involved, just common. And that that is that is just taken, tap away. And that's what that's all it is just start with that. And it might not be for you. That's the thing, and but you just learn as you go along. But I think that was the thing for me with Instagram, I probably didn't use it to the best of my ability, but it just didn't work for me in the way that I I work. Lenka Koppova And that's absolutely fine. Again, you just do you and you'd be where you want to be. But I think that every platform these days gives you all the accessibility options. So I know that some people are not the ones who which type. And other people are not the ones who do video, and other people are not the ones who would like to talk. So you have two options. You can type, you can record audio, you can record videos, you can communicate with people in the way that feels the most natural to you. Peter Sumpton And I suppose one thing to note there, and I'm just talking from a LinkedIn basis, it's, it's doing those different things that make you stand out, you might feel a little uncomfortable, and I'm not advocating, I personally feel if you're in that little uncomfortable zone. That's when you start to grow and develop. But for some people, they're just not there. And that's absolutely fine. But it's things like messaging. And I don't do it enough. But like yesterday, I was I was messaging somebody. And they instead of trying to type out a long winded message back, they did an audio and it stands out like a sore thumb. And if you did a video when everyone else is doing audio, it just stands out like a sore thumb. And that's on a personal level. You know, so there's so many opportunities. And just one quick question. I'm just conscious of time. But I thought I'd put this up because James is pretty much what we've been talking about just there. So talk to people is a great strategy to grow your business. And social allows us to talk to people at scale. And he loves the chat, which is absolutely super, but it's only great because rank is on with me today, which is fantastic in itself. So just on that point that James says, talking to people at scale, I suppose you can do both, can't you? You know, I've just been talking about peak speaking to people on on VM. And that's a one to one basis. But I noticed you just posted something. It was weird. Because before we got on this chart, I was looking at LinkedIn and lose a video view and then you popped up on the screen and I'm like, okay, like doubling, amazing day. But yeah, it's like you're speaking to speak people at scale on video. And that's a huge benefit. Lenka Koppova Well, I think that's where the benefit and the beauty of social media lies because social media allows you to reach out to anyone and everyone it is an open democratic platform where there is no gatekeeper, you can send a message out there and millions of people can see it the same time. It allows every single individual to be able to interact with you. There is no one you know, it's not like you, you can't interact with TV, you can shout at it. But it's probably the only thing you will do. Like something if you like something you can interact with it. And if you keep majority of your conversations on the public domain where someone tweets you someone messages us on the comments in a conversation going to a certain point publicly, Yes, exactly. It is public, everyone else can see it. No, you are investing in a conversation one on one potentially under comments on LinkedIn under someone's post that you you know, you reply to a reply but I can have a conversation. it for you. It might be I'm having a conversation with one person, but there might be hundreds of other people who will read the conversation. And who will align who might comment or might not comment will might follow you because of the who might like to because of that. And then yes, it's just then taking it to the next level of no picking from the scale the people who will resonate with you, and then taking those relationships to the next level by going to the DMS or one personalised chat. Peter Sumpton And that's why it's so important to be important to be yourself, isn't it? You know, because you want to resonate with people that you want to work with eventually. And if you're you, and people see you for you, and they are still willing, well, in my case, they're still willing to chat to me, then that that means that they can put up with me in my ramblings on on marketing, important strategy and everything else's, I'm really conscious of things I want to cover and then on to social media. And then this year, first thing is, people get hung up on on the likes, the comments and all that kind of stuff. How do you stop people from worrying if they're putting out content, and there's not that much engagement on the face of it from what they've seen stat wise. Lenka Koppova So there are statistics and numbers that are meaningful, and there are stats that are meaningless, like watching the numbers of followers doesn't really matter, like on Twitter, and Instagram, on other platforms, if you use the right hashtags, if your content is interesting and valuable, then it will be spread widely, and it can go way beyond your number of followers. So it's important to understand the meaningful metrics, the metrics that really show you the indication of the quality and the interest in your content in your business in your offering, which could be, you know, comments could be shares, it could be DMS, obviously, it is web traffic, it is email science, it is video views, repeat views. But I would say, especially at the early stages, it takes a long while it is very interesting to see that social media works kind of exponential in a way that there is a long lead up to them quite quick growth and take off too, sometimes, you know, 12, to 18 months of day to day activity of surgery, podcasters can see the new example of podcast after podcast that the first nine months just nothing happened. And then out of nowhere, it goes like this, it goes fast. But without putting the work in, in the first stage, it wouldn't, you wouldn't get there it is there is something about your resilience and consistency and persevere. And understanding that even though social media will give you results immediately, you can measure anything and everything from three second views to you know, likes here and there. It's important to know that the meaningful metrics and the meaningful results, take time and be patient. Peter Sumpton And yeah, it's a marathon, not a sprint, at the end of the day. So just moving back to your event. Just I suppose two quick questions. Really, before we wrap up? what's what's the worst thing about organising an event online? Lenka Koppova I think the worst thing is kind of not knowing if the technology will work. Because in person, you know, yes, there are some tech aspects that you need to pay attention to, like a microphone and stuff like that. But also then you you actually have real people in real life in you in in the room with you to help you this way, where, you know, we are all in our rooms, we're all in different parts of the world if something goes wrong before our team before myself that for one of the attendees, how will I be able to help them and fix it? I was always the fixed and running around, told him for blanks doing this and isn't knowing that everything is under control. And who is the person? Where do I go? And right now I feel like very early on, if something goes wrong, yes, I know the person but I can't do anything. And if some something's not working on someone's laptop, how will I help them to fix it? Because I don't know. Peter Sumpton Yeah, I mean that that that would be a main worry, because that's the whole event, isn't it? So So On the flip side, what's the best thing about organising this event or any event that you've done? Lenka Koppova I think organising online events really allows you not to be bounded by location because we've always been involved in the Cambridge event. We had people from UK coming, but there was always commuting as always to drive and park. And this way we can welcome audiences from all around the world. And we had people coming to our workshops and Facebook events, people from not only Europe, we managed to get people from all around the world coming to Cambridge Social Media Group, to connect with others, and work with others and learn windows, which is the most wonderful feeling. Because I love connecting people, I love being connected to different people from different places, learn about how social media works there, what it can learn from them. So I think this is the best thing that we can take everyone globally. Everyone talks about finding their happiness or choosing it. I often talk about creating your happy. However, what if it’s already there, but it needs some tender loving care in order to heal? This is exactly what’s happening, and this is how to heal your H.A.P.P.Y. You must heal your… H. - Hope. “Her hope isn’t full.” If you’re running on empty. Stop and fill up. Walk in full. Full. Filled. Hope is your positive expectations. Your beliefs, desires, and trust. What would it take today to fill up your HOPE tank? You have to be willing and brave enough to get your hopes up. No one has ever died because of disappointment, but people have failed to live a fully, happy life because they’ve been afraid to get their hopes up. Elevate your expectation. A. - Awareness. Not unaware. Not numbness. Awareness is not numbness. Numbing your sadness won’t heal your happy. If you desire to heal your happy, you must become consciously aware. And sometimes that means, painfully aware. You must be willing to feel some things that don’t feel so good. Allowing yourself to feel it, in order to heal it. Don’t run from your feelings. Don’t run from yourself. Perhaps you’re actually running from your own happiness? Stop running from your happy. P. - Purpose. Your purpose is real simple. It’s your INSPIRATION. It’s what inspires you. What is it that inspires you? Stop trying so hard to figure it out, and instead, engage with what inspires you daily, and your life will be inspiring. Your inspiration will heal your happy. P. - Play. Play is vital to your happiness. It’s required for action, brain development, and getting you out of your head. If you stay in your head, you’re dead. You must be willing to come out and play. Get out of your head. If your happy isn’t fully healthy, chances are you’ve been spending way too much time in your head. It’s killing you. It’s killing your happy. Get out of your head. Allow yourself to come out and play…and begin to heal your happy. Y. - YOU. WHY? Why do you do what you do? Why do you seek happiness? Why do you desire to heal your happy? The WHY (and the Y) stands for…YOU. YOU. This is why and how to heal your happy. It’s starts with YOU. Healing YOU. From the inside, out. From above, down, inside, and out. Allowing yourself to heal. What have you done lately to receive the gift of healing? To receive the gift of LIFE? Health is full expression of life. Healing is YOU receiving your FULL EXPRESSION OF LIFE. And not only receiving it, but sharing it. Sharing YOU. Are you willing today to receive the full expression of YOUR LIFE, and to allow yourself to begin sharing it? [00:00:00] There is a technology war out there right now, and most people don't realize it. I don't think people are talking about this and this is a very strange subject and is very loosely related to Amazon cell. So you're not going to hear, like, how to grow Amazon sales and this particular podcast. But I felt so strongly after seeing the signs that I wanted to talk about this today so that you are generally warned you need to think about this topic, in my opinion. My name is Stephen Pope. I'm the founder of my Amazon guy. And today we're going to talk about the technology war. [00:00:44] I'm going to start with some examples because I feel like most people are going to think I'm crazy initially when I talk about the subject. Ticktock, great example, because it shows how there's a conflict between two nations, China and the United States. So. All the government entities are like, yeah, China is infiltrating everything with Tic-Tac and they're taking control data and they're stealing people's information. And initially what happened on that timeline was like the government's like, hey, nobody can have ticktock consulting their phones. There was leaks about Amazon doing the same thing. And basically, eventually the government's like, hey, we're going to ban Tick-Tock. Are you going to sell this platform? You can't own a China. And if you think about that, that's never happened before on a technology scale of mass adoption before. This is one large sign of what I'm seeing, there is not a single software application you can log into right now without them shoving down your throat, sign up for OTP one time password. Have you enabled OTP yet? Why? Why is that? And it's because there is so much infrastructure being attacked right now that if you don't have in place, you're you're guaranteed to have a leak. If you look at the last couple of years, this problem's been escalating where we've seen, you know, the biggest the biggest release of personal information was when one of the credit score agencies got hacked, rather. [00:02:28] I mean, I use that word loosely, right? They didn't really get hacked so much as their security just sucked. Right. And then all of a sudden somebody just ran off with all of our information, your Social Security number, every credit source that you have available. Identity theft started spiking. They were supposed to pay people money in this big lawsuit. I didn't see a dime. I don't know if you guys did. And the list goes on from there, the situation. And like the catalyst that made me like want to talk about this was when Amazon's own system completely bonkers, broked. And and this is just one of many things that's been breaking at Amazon, of course. And if you've been listening to the podcast, you're like, OK, Steven's talking about things breaking in Amazon yet again. I get it. But this one's very unique. This is a very unique angle. So I have an agency with 30 employees and half of my agency is in the Philippines. So I had created this very intricate way of having everybody log into our accounts. Right. So I would have half of my accounts on one email address and half in another email address. And then I would have every once OTP code transfer over into my Google Voice text messages, and then I would order for that to the entire organization. Paula Johnson is our guest today. Paula describes herself as a mix of boho hippie, spirited rebel and a regular Kiwi with a ‘can do’ attitude. At the young age of 29, Paula was diagnosed with early menopaue. This was the catalyst that set her on her journey, delving deep into the mental, emotional, the physical and the spiritual self. Finding meaning became her mission - Why? Why did this happen? And the even bigger question - why am I here? The consequence of that diagnosis at such a young age was also going to impact her long-term health. Looking after her heart and bones became paramount if she wanted to live a long, healthy life. This guided her to become interested in natural health and wellbeing which led her to train as a Bowen therapist and therapeutic massage, attending trainings in New Zealand, Australia and Bali. Paula is passionate about travel and making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. She has been co-sponsoring a brother and sister in Bali for the past ten years, helping change the cycle of poverty within their family. Never thinking she would be a mother; these two young adults are now very much part of her life. When she’s not helping local clients out of pain and stress through her holistic bodywork practice, she’s a digital nomad, creating websites while travelling and house sitting. I asked Paula to be an author of Change is not a Scary Word, as I have seen her go through many changes in her life, and knew she would be a great contributor to this book. Paula is a Champion of Change, having reinvented herself many times over the years, she knows only too well that change is an inside job. She uses her experience to support and encourage others to follow their dreams. From blogging to being a published author in two collaborative books, CHANGE is Not a Scary Word and From the Ridiculous to the Sublime, and her very own memoir is underway (due out in October 2021). It’s the story we’ve all heard countless times before: boy meets girl, hilariously tender mishaps occur, and they fall hopelessly in love with one another. Romantic comedies have been irresistible since the beginning of storytelling because we can’t help but love love. Shakespeare knew it, J-17 magazine knew it, and due to the successful patriarchal brainwashing of western culture, now you know it too. Looking back on some of our favorite rom-coms as adults, however, can prove tricky. We watch them to escape the harrowing reality of life, only to be thrown back into the confusing world of playful sexism for comedy’s sake. The leading women in these movies are constantly thrown under the bus, metaphorical or otherwise for a punchline that isn’t worth it in the end. Beyond this, they teach young women that love should be complicated and hard, that it is exhibited through taunting, teasing, hatred, and heartbreak. The simple question should be asked: Why? Why do we continue to perpetuate these stereotypes, even when they play into the facade of new-age Hollywood fads of “progressive” feminist film? Title: Doctrines of Demons Text: I Timothy 4:1-5 FCF: We often struggle spotting false teaching. Prop: Because we know apostasy will happen because of demonic influence, we must confess and demonstrate the truth. Scripture Intro: CSB [Slide 1] Turn in your bible to I Timothy chapter 4. Last week we saw the cypher by which ALL of I Timothy can be interpreted accurately. Paul says to Timothy that he is writing to help him and the church of Ephesus understand how they ought to live as the family of God. In a word… RIGHTEOUSLY. Why? Because they are the assembly of the LIVING GOD, the pillar and foundation of the truth. The church upholds the truth. True believers do this by confessing the truth – or mutually agreeing on core doctrine and demonstrating it – or living out what those core doctrines teach. Last week, in a short hymn, we saw the core doctrines of the gospel. They are Christ, incarnated, obedient, crucified, risen, ascended, actively helping His church, actively giving faith, and one day coming again to rule fully and finally. And we saw last week that these core doctrines are not check box items that we can simply say – YEP I believe it. No. Each of these doctrines has devastating effects on our lifestyles if we truly have received them in faith. All of them prove that Christ is actively shoving us into his mold. To the point that if we are not being conformed to Christ – our faith, may not be true faith at all. This passage today only builds on this concept. It only emphasizes why confessing and demonstrating the truth as the true church of God is desperately needed. Today we will see the other side of truth. Let’s look at verse 1 of chapter 4. I am reading from the CSB today, but you can follow along in the pew bible on page 1339 or in whatever version you have in front of you. Transition: What terribly frightening words here. Let’s unpack them and see what they mean for us today. I.) In the last days some will apostatize the faith, so we must confess and demonstrate the truth. (1-2) a. [Slide 2] 1 – Now the Spirit explicitly says that in the later times i. The Spirit here refers of course to the Holy Spirit. The Agent God uses to communicate, illuminate, and guide His people in truth. ii. Where does the Spirit explicitly say this? 1. Here in this text? Right now? 2. At some time before? iii. It may help us to understand that to explicitly say something you do not have to say it explicitly. iv. What I mean, is that Paul could be referring to a vast amount of scripture that communicates the same general truth. What it lacks in a clear straight forward statement, it makes up for in an overwhelming theme. v. That theme speaks to the way the world will end. vi. But here we have a little bit of a problem. What Paul is about to say is supposed to be a comment on how things will be in the later times, toward the end of days, as the Kingdom of Christ comes to its fullness. vii. Yet he says this and applies it to his own time. Which is, around 1,960 years ago, give or take a decade. viii. So, are we living in the last times or was Paul living in the last times? ix. I think, without committing to any specific eschatology, I can accurately say – yes. Actually, if your eschatology does not suppose that we live in the last times, it is missing something. x. In fact, the eschatology of the church in Ephesus had made this mistake. They had concluded that the resurrection had occurred. That the Kingdom of God was fully upon them. That is why they had installed woman leaders and teachers – thinking that the curse of God had been removed and that we had been returned to a pre-fall state. xi. Paul, saying this, indicates that the church in Ephesus, was not in a post resurrection state, but rather, still, a pre-resurrection state. Just like we are today. b. [Slide 3] Some will depart from the faith i. The faith here is possessive. This could be either some of the faith will depart or some will depart from the faith. The latter seems more accurate. Especially since contextually we have just seen a section talking about doctrine or teaching. ii. The word depart is to apostatize. It means to reject, to fight against, to betray. iii. Putting it all together, some will apostatize from the faith. iv. Not that they will lose their salvation, or that their divine election is somehow, uncertain – but rather that in the last days, the faith (the truths set down in the recent hymn) will be rejected and opposed by some who had previously said they confessed them. v. God promises to preserve and protect His true children and to glorify them. vi. But God does not promise to preserve and protect all that claim to be His true child. vii. We will see some, in the later times, leave the faith. They will walk away from and fight against the truth. viii. Why? Why would they do such a thing? c. [Slide 4] Paying attention to deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons i. The true family and assembly of the living God upholds and demonstrates the truth. They not only believe the right things, but they live righteously as an outpouring of that true faith. ii. So how could someone desert the faith? iii. First, we must arrive at the conclusion that a person who apostatizes, was never truly changed by the power of the gospel. The gospel perfects God’s people. They live, not perfectly, but toward perfection. They cling to the truth. iv. But what we see here is a different story. v. The phrase “paying attention to” here means give an ear to, are curious about, preoccupied by or enamored with. vi. Of what are they enamored? What are they preoccupied with? Lying Spirits. vii. They pant after, pine for, and pursue teachings of demons. viii. The campaign of disinformation and fake news has always been a thing. ix. Since the garden of Eden, the tactic of the enemy has always been to subtlety spin, twist, distort, or otherwise pollute the truth. x. Although this text does not say that every perversion of the truth is sourced in the forces of darkness, it is not far fetched to think that is true. Especially when so many cults and false religious claim to have met angels, gods, and other supernatural creatures that have told them what to believe. xi. In many ways the forces of darkness do not care what you believe, so long as it is not the text of the hymn Paul just mentioned. xii. So, we know why someone leaves the faith. They yearn for deeper and greater truth beyond what they have been given. They are not satisfied with the truth and think there must be something missing. And the forces of darkness are more than willing to provide more mud to put in the water. xiii. But demons and deceitful spirits do not go about speaking to everyone do they? xiv. We must be careful. xv. There are two extremes in regard to demons that we cannot swing to. 1. The first is that they have great power over true believers, that every headache and hangnail is their doing, that they force us to sin and every single time we are led to do so it is their fault. That every thought that enters our mind that is against the scriptures is somehow woven or given by them. These go too far. 2. The second extreme is that they have been cancelled by the cross of Christ to the point that they cannot touch us, nor are they able to influence the world around us. They have been neutralized to the point that we are now immune. This too is too far. 3. To conclude either would be to wildly miscalculate. xvi. Paul is talking about the fake believer. One who will apostatize the faith. The root cause of their apostasy is demonic teaching, but that is probably not where they learned it. xvii. Paul clearly points out the primary way that the deceitful spirits communicate their demonic doctrines. It is… d. [Slide 5] 2 – through the hypocrisy of liars, whose consciences are seared i. Agents of darkness communicate the lies of demons. Humans. ii. How will we know who they are? iii. They lie, claiming one thing and living another, or having an inconsistent application of what they demand of themselves vs others. iv. And their consciences are seared. The meaning of this phrase is difficult. It can mean to brand or to sear. v. Some suggest that they have been branded by the forces of darkness, meaning that they are secretly Satan’s agents, who know the truth but live and preach a message intentionally to deceive. vi. But the most likely meaning is that they are not people whose conscience is working. vii. Rather they have grown desensitized to the burn of sin and the sweetness of righteousness. They neither mourn over their sin, nor do they hunger and thirst for righteousness. viii. And so, a false teacher, a false prophet, a man with a message of lying spirits, who spouts the doctrine of demons, is recognized by their lifestyles. By their fruit you will know them. ix. Indeed, there is no cult and no false religion in the world whose founder is not morally debased and debauched. From Joseph Smith to Mohammed and everyone in between – when you start digging into these cults and religious leaders and founders… the consistent theme is a life of wickedness. e. [Slide 6] Passage Truth: Paul tells Timothy that in the later days, many will desert the faith because they yearn for the doctrines of demons spoken through the lips of false teachers. f. Passage Application: The first application for Timothy, although unsaid in the text, is fairly obvious. It goes back to the previous chapter. It is to confess and demonstrate the truth. This only further sharpens that application. g. [Slide 7] Broader Biblical Truth: Zooming out to other passages of scripture, Paul is correct. From the pages of Genesis, to the pages of Revelation, we see the Spirit’s message. That many will fall away. Many will apostatize the faith. Jesus Himself predicted this in the Olivette discourse. That many would be deceived. Jesus indicates the strength of the deception when he says that even, if possible, the elect will be deceived. The Son of God knows what is and isn’t possible. This is a teaching device to explain how strong the deception will be. That if it were possible for the elect to be deceived by it – they would. This apostasy has already begun. It is continuing. And it will continue so long as Christ’s Kingdom is not fully realized. And people reject their faith when they listen to teachers whose consciences do not know truth from error, or right from wrong. They are propelled, whether they know it or not, by the teachings of demons. And these teachings by these people draw out the already curious. They draw out the already enamored. They draw out those with itching ears, desiring to be told what they want to hear. In some ways, these false teachers purify the church. h. Broader Biblical Application: But that does not mean we do not oppose them. Because we do so not for the protection of the wanderers in our congregation, but for the glory of God. We are heralds of the truth, whether anyone listens or not. We confess and live out the truth of the gospel, that has been written on our hearts. It is Christ in us working through us. We show our faith by our works. Our works that God provides power and desire to do. We oppose the lies by living the truth. We oppose the lies by confessing the truth. It is true, we ought not go around playing the heresy card all the time. We ought to be careful what we call a “false gospel.” But I’m not sure if that is truly a big problem in our culture. It seems, with 70% of Americans claiming to be Christians and only 3% living their life by the bible, with false teachers increasing, and the apostates growing in numbers – it seems like we do have quite the heresy problem. We ought to know the truth well enough to call heresy what it is. The world is filled with devils, threatening to undo us – we must cling to the right man who we have on our side. Not only to believe in Him, but on Him to raise up righteousness in us… a righteousness that is His working through us. We must stand, as Paul does, against those who would twist the gospel. Transition: But what exactly did these people teach that was so wrong? Can we get an example of their false gospel? It must be pretty messed up right? Well, not as much as you might think… II.) Doctrines of demons add to and take from the gospel, so we must confess and demonstrate the truth. (3-5) a. [Slide 8] 3 – They forbid marriage and demand abstinence from foods i. That’s it. Seems pretty tame right? Well… not really. ii. So what is being said here? iii. Looking at the harmony between the first chapter and this one, we can reasonably conclude that the people who were mythicizing the Old Testament writings are the ones Paul is still addressing. iv. Although the details are unclear, one way that they were applying this was to forbid marriage. v. Of course, we know that Jesus addressed singleness as a positive thing. A gift of the Spirit. Paul also praises singleness, in that kingdom work is easier without a wife and children to look after. vi. However, nowhere in scripture is marriage to be forgone completely. vii. So, what is so dangerous about what they say about marriage? These people were taking something that was considered a noble option – and making it a blanket requirement. viii. Why would they do this? ix. Remember, we looked at this when Paul talked about women preaching and exercising authority over men. Paul goes back to the garden. He goes back to Adam and Eve. He goes back to the curse of sin. We supposed, looking ahead into II Timothy, that the false teaching of Hymenaeus is in view. That the resurrection had already occurred. Meaning that the Kingdom of God had come. x. What that means, is that the curse had been undone. That we had returned to a pre-fall state. In which men and women no longer strived for dominance. They mythicized the creation account to think that man and woman were created without an order. Paul corrected that in chapter 2. Showing that before the fall, this order did exist. xi. But even here, to forbid marriage is to take Jesus’ teaching on there being no marriage in the new kingdom, combine it with the belief that God will remove the curse to return us to an Eden like life, and then force Adam and Eve to not have been married prior to the fall. xii. Paul’s comments later in this verse will help us understand why their view of Adam and Eve’s relationship prior to the fall is a myth, but for now we need to see that all this is connected. They are being taught that the curse of sin is gone and that they live in a new Eden. xiii. The same thing can be said about forbidding them from eating meat. This could be a reference to eating meat offered to idols. This could be a reference to simple dietary restrictions. xiv. But think about the garden. They, prior to the fall, did not eat meat. Or, at least, we were never told they did. They could eat of all the “FRUIT” of the trees but not of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. xv. And so, they required all to abstain from being married and eating certain foods. And of course, by saying that they required this, or forbade this, it heavily implies that they are assigning the same theological weight to these teachings, as Paul has to the doctrine and lifestyles he previously mentioned. xvi. In other words, these teachers were saying that unless you refuse to marry, and abstain from certain foods, you cannot possibly be a follower of Christ. xvii. And there is the lie from demons. There is the twist on the gospel. xviii. However, we see in the Pastoral Epistles, whose context is all the same, the hypocrisy of all this come through. Because although they forbid marriage, sexual immorality was on the rise. Though they forbid food, drunkenness and laziness was abounding. Though they reject certain things that they have concluded were not present pre-fall – they are hoarding money. xix. So we see the lying hypocrisy of these teachers who are unable to tell what is right or wrong. xx. Paul instructs them about marriage and food… b. [Slide 9] That God created to be received with gratitude by those who believe and know the truth. i. Those who are believing ones, who have come to know the truth – it is those who understand that God created marriage and food to be received with gratitude. ii. Paul continues to correct the myths of the pre-fall state. Pre-fall, everything was good. Including the marriage that God had given them. And God allowed for eating meat post-fall – which is, of course, the time they were still in. They were in the later times, not the eternal state. iii. Again their eschatology is wrong. The resurrection had not come. iv. Instead, they still live in a world where God has blessed us with these gifts. v. And those who have been shown the truth and have seen it through spiritual eyes – know this to be the case. vi. Indeed, how could anyone conclude as we look around, that somehow, we are in a post-resurrection eternal utopia where God truly reigns fully and finally with no caveats or further explanation? Such a conclusion would be ridiculous. c. [Slide 10] 4 – For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving i. Indeed, everything God has created is good. He said so Himself. ii. Nothing should be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving. iii. Now, if we took this verse in isolation, we could arrive at some very disturbing applications could we not? iv. Is there truly nothing created by God that is not good? What about demons? Is nothing to be rejected if we receive it with thanksgiving? What about romantic overtures from someone who is not our spouse? v. Of course, Paul does not mean this to its fullest degree. He can’t. In fact, this reads much like a proverb. vi. Most of the time this is true. vii. Why? d. [Slide 11] 5 – since it is sanctified by the Word of God and by prayer. i. Here is the key to understand verse 4. ii. What the word of God sets apart as good. What we receive in thanks after prayer to God. You see, God marks out what is good and worthy to be received in thanks. He does this by His revelation and by giving us what is in His will when we humbly ask for it. We have promises that He will give us all that we ask when we ask according to His will. And His will is spelled out in His Word. iii. So His word and His answering of our petitions are the standard to determine what is good for us and to be received in gratitude. e. [Slide 12] Passage Truth: Paul tells Timothy the nature of the demonic teaching. And it is quite subtle. Namely, that they have changed noble works to required commands. f. Passage Application: And so, Timothy must oppose this teaching with the truth. That God created all things and sanctifies them for our use by His word and prayer. Those who believe and have been given spiritual insight, understand this. g. [Slide 13] Broader Biblical Truth: Zooming out to the rest of scripture we see this kind of thing happen all the time. Ultimately it is a rejection of God’s Word and God’s law. God’s Word says that salvation (which is the process of salvation starting at justification and ending in glorification) is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. But when we start to impose rules, adding to what God has said, suggesting that God may be wrong, or going beyond what He has revealed. When we neglect His law and make a law of our own – we have polluted the gospel and turned it into something it is not. We cannot say, you cannot go to movies and be a Christian. But we can say you cannot be a murderer and be a Christian. We cannot say you cannot be a Christian if you drink alcohol but we can say that if you are a drunk you can’t be a Christian. What is the difference? Namely, the bible tells us that murderers and drunkards will not inherit the Kingdom of God. But the bible does not say either of the others. Are there good reasonings for people to never drink? Are there good reasonings for people to not attend movies? Sure. But we must oppose what God’s Word says to oppose. We must not add to by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. We are free in Christ to do works of righteousness and keep the law of God. We cannot impose further man-made laws or traditions. h. Broader Biblical Application: For us to apply this we must oppose both sides of the equation. Both reject the law of God but from different angles. Here in this text, we must oppose all gospels that add to Christ’s work and God’s Word. Gospels that emphasize man’s responsibility over grace. Gospels that impose lists of duties that are not present in the scriptures. Gospels that put unnecessary weights upon people who have been freed in Christ. If we are God’s child, we have been set free to walk by the Spirit. We live in a graced existence whereby through faith we are able, and do desire to obey our King. This is the tension Paul deals with in Galatians and Romans. That we are not bound to fulfill a lifestyle of rigorous and exacting man-made law keeping in human effort. Rather we are free to be slaves to righteousness and God’s law keeping in which we are given by God Himself the power and desire to do what pleases Him, through Christ. So, we don’t add more to God’s law, but rather we live in victory to keep His law. But, we dare not take away from His law either. The other side of the coin here, which often go hand in hand, is that along with keeping extra laws that God has not given, they also break clear laws that God has given. Many Many Many in our culture celebrate the truth of Christ fulfilling the law, but only so they can sin with impunity. Paul says not to use our freedom to satisfy the flesh. Our freedom is not to sin, nor is it to be free of consequence of sin… rather our freedom is for righteousness. To live in the victory of Christ. And so, just like when we see people add to Christ, we ought also to oppose those who take away from Christ. Christ did not free us from the penalty of sin only. He freed us from sin itself. He IS STILL freeing us from sin. And one day we will be truly free from sin. My friends – the gospel is narrow. The gospel justifies and sanctifies and will glorify. We cannot add to it nor take from it. Here is what we know of the gospel. Christ has substituted Himself for us. We have been cleansed by the blood of Christ; we have been given access to the throne of God. We who believe and know the truth, live in a constant graced state of a lifestyle being saved from sin through the faith we have received from Christ and Christ alone. We dare not add works of our own to this equation, nor shall we dare to take away Christ continued work to save us from sin. Furthermore, anything that is not this message of Christ crucified for sinners, ought to be cast down. It ought to be rebuked. It ought to be corrected. As Paul is doing here. Conclusion: [Slide 14] So what does this mean for us CBC? My friends, people are still trying to add to and take from the gospel. And sometimes it is pretty obvious. Sometimes it is so obvious that we have called them cults or false religions. Mormonsism, Jehovah’s Witnessism, Islam, Roman Catholicism, and others are really easy to see that they have added works to Christ’s work. There are some more subtle additions like faith healing, prosperity teaching, and moralism. These gospels focus on the life we live now. They focus on health, wealth, and even just good living. With moralism especially we see people, with no gospel backdrop, emphasizing right living. Some things they teach, like kindness, love, respect are all qualities actual Christians possess. Others like dressing a certain way, abstaining from alcohol, accepting only one English translation of the bible – these are not rooted in any scripture. But for all the morality it teaches, it is not rooted in Christ’s provision but human effort. Christ got us half way – we need to do the rest. But there is no question that today we live in dark times. Because the lies are growing even more subtle. The deception is growing even stronger. Jesus predicted it would – so we should not be surprised. Let me give you a couple examples. Is it true that God says we should uphold justice, and oppose injustice? Yes. Is it true that when we see people being oppressed, the voiceless, the taken advantage of, that we should do what we can to help them? Yes. The bible teaches us that true religion undefiled is to care for widows and orphans… the voiceless. But what about those who say that you must repent of your status as an oppressor because you are privileged to be a certain ethnicity, skin color, sex, sexual orientation, or a national to a particular country? Is it ok to say that if you do not repent of being an oppressor, again, simply because you are this kind of person, that you are actively continuing to support injustice and oppression? I think that takes the concept of biblical justice and twists it so it sounds like biblical justice when it is in fact, simply, man’s vengeance. Yet there are many in our country who are conservative, evangelical, and reformed, who would say that if you have not repented of your status as an oppressor and done all that you can to support those who are oppressed in this nation – then you cannot be a Christian. This.. is.. exactly what was happening in Ephesus. Taking something noble, which is the essence of pure and undefiled religion – and demanding it to be true of every single person in a specific application. How could we change this to be biblically accurate? What must a person have to do to prove they are not a Christian in regards to justice and oppression? Any person who actively participates in or applauds oppression or the squelching of the voiceless cannot be a Christian. Can you think of any examples of that? Oh I don’t know… abortion? You cannot actively support and fully approve of abortion and be a Christian. Why? Because that is the true definition of oppression. It is stamping out someone’s life for personal gain. That is… in a word… oppression. Let me give you another example from the other side of the tracks. There are some in our circles who would say, you cannot vote for a Democrat and be a Christian, or that you must vote Republican to be a Christian. I know that I have wrestled with this one in particular. But I think this passage makes it clear. These statements are corruptions of the gospel. Our party affiliation alone does not determine whether or not we are a believer. Certainly, the things each party stands for ought to be considered, and the person’s character as a leader ought to be considered, but to blanket statement such things is adding to the gospel. What could we say to make it in line with scripture? If a person whole heartedly applauds an ungodly candidate’s lifestyle and/or an ungodly platform, they cannot be a Christian. This is exactly what the bible teaches, because it goes to the heart of the matter. True Christians cannot approve of sin. Any sin. Whether it is in their candidate or in their candidate’s platform. We must be so careful that we do not add to or take away anything from the gospel. Because the gospel, untainted, is the power of God unto salvation. A salvation that not only saves us from the penalty of sin – but the power of sin. A salvation that will eventually save us from the presence of sin. We must confess and demonstrate the truth. And in so doing, we will easily recognize the lies of the doctrines of demons. Even when they are preached by people we trusted. When we say, “You can’t be a Christian if you…” we must be sure that what finishes that phrase is from scripture.
How did Trotsky view revolution and the arts? Because art holds a mirror up to life, many revolutionaries have taken an interest its role. Leon Trotsky in particular wrote on art, literature, and its role in society and politics. Art can be insightful because of its politics, or despite them. So how does Marxism, a political theory, have any relation to art? The Russian revolution led to an explosion in artistic vision. Then Stalinism stamped it all out. Why? Why did Trotsky struggle to try to bring together revolutionary artists in the 1930s? And what relevance does Trotsky’s approach to art and culture hold today? Why did he do this?If you haven’t already noticed, I like to give Jason a hard time (as you will hear a couple of times throughout this episode). He’s real patient with me and just rolls with it. He’s a good guy. In this episode, we talk about a big question that women ask - “Why? Why did you do this?!" I share a couple of reasons as to why she needs to hear the reasons from her husband, we talk about how answering this question is apart of the grieving process, and we also talk about what he can do in the here and now for the why from the past to not hold so much weight moving forward. Shelley mentions the Restore Workshop which will be held next month virtually, then back to in-person in Spring 2021. “Good work in the present creates a future where there won’t be as much focus on the past.” - Jason said this during the episode and I thought it was so good. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son… from the Father, full of grace and truth. -ESV Have you ever pondered that text from John 1:14? That Almighty God would step down off His throne where myriads of angels continually sing Holy, Holy Holy….for the sole purpose of showing us how to live, how to die, defeating death and casting our sins as far as the east is from the west. Yes my dear Brothers and Sisters the veil has indeed been torn. How? The Word became flesh…. Why? Why would the Word (Jesus Christ) become flesh? Revelation 21:3 tells us: Behold, the dwelling place of God is with….man. He will dwell among them….and they will be His people… and God Himself will be with them… as their God. Wow! So, if Jesus Christ became flesh, and He is physically going to dwell among His people in the New Heaven & the New Earth….why do we as His bride tend to think our own physical bodies as…. bad? That somehow our flesh is just a mere “tent” that houses all our evil desires? Is that really the case? Have we really ever considered the theology of our bodies? Is a Christian allowed to question God? Is it really a function of faith to ask, "Why? Why me? Why this? Why now?" Job asked those questions, but he also made incredible confessions, and in the process Job shows us what it's like to be real, authentic Christians. Even in the midst of fear and anxiety, when we feel uncertain, we don't have to rely on our own ability to understand or stay grounded. We rely on our Redeemer. Listen to this week's sermon to hear why Job's confession is so powerful for you.

In the first episode of season three, Tim and Tuesday talk with Cyndi Suarez, author of The Power Manual, where they explore the complexities of power and language. Join us for an invigorating, heartfelt and insightful conversation. Together, Tim Merry and Tuesday Ryan-Hart are THE OUTSIDE—systems change and equity facilitators who bring the fresh air necessary to organize movements, organizations, and collaborators forward for progress, surfacing new mindsets for greater participation and shared impact.3.01 — SHOW NOTESTuesday: Today on the podcast, our first of Season III, we are talking with Cyndi Suarez. Cyndi is the Senior Editor at Nonprofit Quarterly, she’s the author of The Power Manual: How To Master Complex Power Dynamics, she’s worked as a strategy and innovation consultant with a focus on networks and platforms for social movements, and she studied feminist theory and organizational development for social change. Cyndi: In the last few years, I’ve realized a different form of leadership that I’ve been exploring and I’ve been calling it “Articulation Leadership.” Seeing the power in putting things that we want into words; how that just opens up different worlds and possibilities. Tim: A lot of what we [The Outside] do happens in the experience that people have with each other but it becomes vastly insufficient when you are talking to someone about some major transformation work, that they will feel has very high stakes to it, and then you’re like, you have to really experience it to know what we are talking about. And so, we’re really in a question of how do you use words to evoke something that in some ways is felt? And then there is something for me about whether we are developing a new language or is it about finding the right words for the moment? Those are the two big questions we are in. Cyndi: The work of translation - of being able to both dive deep for the depth that you need and to find common ground - is one of the biggest challenges of organizing for power. It often does require redefining these identities that have been put on us and at the same time you need to reconnect with a larger table. Tuesday: When you talked about translation or connection; there’s a piece that is strategy. Part of it is grounding and deepening so we know what we’re doing and who we are to do it, but then there is also this piece around strategy that you just have to pay attention to. The reason we formed The Outside is because we felt like as we did systems change work there was very little power analysis and then in some of the movement-based spaces, there wasn’t much strategy to the level that you are talking about - not connecting out to make change. You have to do both to get you where you want to go. Cyndi: In my work, I am constantly challenging people to question the idea of shared strategy. Why? Why don’t we have a portfolio? Why do we have to agree? What do we have to agree on? This idea that we have to agree on everything is really extreme and tiring. It does not allow for the diversity that we have in our spaces. It doesn’t encourage it. I think there is a way that we need to be both humble and sophisticated in these conversations. We have to care enough and be curious enough about people. Being drawn towards difference is less explored especially in leadership and translation work. Tim: That bridging role is about power but also what we are often doing is pitching to people who hold wealth, influence, positional or hierarchical authority something that in many ways will undermine the established power that they have or the way they have got to that position of power. What’s the language that translates into positions of power - why power needs to be let go of and how does that begin to start shifting people’s fundamental beliefs about themselves and what it means to lead in today’s world? What’s the language that’s hard enough to bridge into the leadership worlds that we are currently engaging but soft enough to point to something new?Tuesday: Cyndi, you’ve just said so many interesting little nuggets… I am curious how you got to where you are?Cyndi: Since I was a kid, I always knew that I was going to write about power. I loved reading. Reading has always been a big part of my life. I am attracted to things that are different and that I don’t know. Tim: How do you stay tuned to this? Cyndi: I’m reading this book called Sacred Contract and one of the things that she says about people who tend to create something new or something big is that there is a point at which they have to go against the tribe. They always have to break from what is known to them in order to make their contribution. I think part of it is that. I came knowing and trusting myself and I have a spiritual practice - I am very inward focused. I spend a lot of time imagining what I want. My trajectory has been that I always end up doing exactly what I wanted to do. Tuesday: You feel so clear in your internal compass and there is an outward thing that is happening - you don’t feel afraid of ideas. It’s so unique. Also, please tell us about The Edge Institute. Cyndi: The Edge Institute grew out of the work that I do with Nonprofit Quarterly and The Power Manual. When we engage people of colour, in the sector, no matter what level of leadership they were in, people really wanted a different space, outside of their organization, to come and to think and to be with other leaders and to explore and create the new forms they want or suspect other people want. “Forms” is everything from subjectivity, to organizational form, to interactional frameworks… anything that is a form; that’s what this is a space for. It’s a larger thing than a project in a nonprofit world. Hey there friends and weirdos! Big warning on this episode: it's super gross. We're so sorry. If you can stomach it, we're talking about the alternative medicinal practice known as "urine therapy," which if you can't surmise what this may be, don't worry - Kyle did all the research so you don't have to. We discuss the foundational text of urine therapy advocates, "The Water of Life" by J.W. Armstrong. Why? Why do people do this?! We get to the bottom of the cistern in this nasty episode.
Why?: How do you construct a Bible lesson based on The Effective Four? What?: The Effective Four are the four questions you should help your learners answer so that they might gain wisdom rather than mere knowledge from your Bible lesson. The questions are: Why? What? So What? So What Now?. The first question is Why? Why should they want to know the truth you are going to show them from Scripture? The second question is What? What is that truth? The third question is So What? How might the truth be applied to their lives so that they can grow in wisdom? Finally, So What Now? What transformation would they commit to as a result of the lesson? That's the order of the lesson—Why? What? So What? So What Now?. But, the lesson is constructed starting with the What? This is where you will spend most of your time in preparing the lesson. What is the big idea from the passage you are going to teach? Once you understand what the human author, inspired by the divine author, meant to say to the original audience, you can bring the truth to your learners. Then, think through how that truth could be applied to your learners. That's the So What?. The So What Now? is the way in which you will have your learners commit to being transformed. Finally, knowing where you're aiming, develop the Why? that will draw them into the lesson. Raise a tension that needs to be settled or ask a question that needs to answered by the passage you're teaching. So What?: In summary, you prepare the lesson beginning with the What?, but you present the lesson beginning with the Why?. This is the method of constructing a lesson so that you are, as the title of the book says, Bible Teaching for Wisdom. So What Now?: Rather than reading from a lesson prepared by another or presenting a lot of interesting Bible facts, know the truth that leads to wisdom and then teach that truth using The Effective Four.

Is there anyone out there at this point that thinks they don’t need to vote? If so, who are they, and are they smart enough to even find a TV? And today, everyone is going from 0 to 60 immediately, even me. Why? Why are we all so quick to snap these days about the smallest of things? And are we ever going to address it? We are creatures of comfort. When we feel comfortable, a feeling of security and contentment is engendered. Because we like feeling this way, we spend an inordinate amount of energy trying to stay in that comfort zone and feel threatened when we are pushed out of it as is happening during this time when we are living through a pandemic, with a layer of political and social unrest on top of it all. Today, I will discuss why we feel so threatened based on the yoga perspective of chakra theory. ……. Let me take a few minutes to help you understand what the chakras truly are. The word chakra means ‘wheel’ and each one is an energy vortex that is somewhat of a ‘meeting point’ for the different aspects, the different layers, of our being. Each chakra influences, and is influenced by, the physical, energetic, mental, wisdom and spiritual dimensions of who we are. I want to make it clear that your chakras are all functioning, or ‘open’ despite what you may have heard or read in what I have to refer to as rather new age teachings. No chakra is ‘closed’ or ‘blocked’. The question actually becomes how the chakra is functioning - poorly, normally, or optimally. It’s really a matter of degree – a continuum – and that function slides along the continuum. As an example, consider your eyes. If your vision is poor, you can’t see well, and especially as a child, you may not even realize there’s a better way to see until someone tests you. Maybe you become aware there is a weakness of vision and you take the action of getting glasses that allow you to see normally and this correction becomes second nature. Now imagine that you could ‘see’ beyond that – to ‘see’ or discriminate more of what is truth. Perhaps realizing that at our core we are all connected and all subject to the same fears and goals. And this level of seeing results in more understanding, compassion and humility. It is at this point that you are seeing optimally! So, it’s not a matter of the chakras being open or closed. It’s a matter of where their function falls along the continuum of darkness to luminosity. In yoga we call this continuum that ‘gunas’ or the qualities of nature. There are only three gunas but there are various shades emerging from one to the other in the same way as different colors emerge as one overtakes the other. I’ll give a brief primer on the gunas. Tamas is at the dark end of the spectrum and represents depression, inertia, stuckness. Rajas is in the middle and represents dynamism, movement, ego. And Sattwa is at the other end of the spectrum with balance and luminosity. These gunas are always shifting a bit from one direction to the other depending on our lives – our conditioned behaviors, our associations, our karmas, our lifestyle. But generally speaking, the vast majority of people are mainly tamasic with some rajas. In other words, most of us are acting without much awareness and as a result of how we were raised. But this will vary depending on the chakra discussed because you may be predominantly rajas in a couple and more tamasic in others. So now coming back to the discussion of the chakras and re-examining our comfort zone, I will explain how these gunas play out for the chakra most associated with our comfort zone – mooladhara. Moola means ‘root’ and ‘adhara’ means foundation. Our need for security, to feel comfort, is primarily held within this root chakra. To as certain extent, the chakras align with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Maslow was a psychologist and a bit of a philosopher who laid out a series of levels that are required for self-actualization. Maslow delineated the most important needs to be met first are those that relate to survival – food, water, warmth, rest, safety, security. In yoga this is also the first level, the first main chakra, the foundation chakra of mooladhara. It is also the root of fear when these needs aren’t met because this foundation, this root chakra is about security on all levels. It’s about having enough. Having enough food and water to sustain us. Having enough warmth and shelter to protect us from the elements and other possible dangers. Having enough children to pass on our genetic material. And having enough skills to acquire all of this. And when you don’t feel that you have enough, and for some, there is never enough, fear and anxiety result. But even if you do have enough, do may live in fear of losing it. This is the influence of tamas. If the energy that infuses mooladhara is tamasic energy, then you live in fear. You believe the world is a dangerous place and may be hypervigilant. You fear those you don’t know those who look different than you do, those that act different. Because of this fear, you avoid exploring anything unfamiliar. You hold tightly to what you have, both the objects you possess as well as the thoughts because to think a different way creates more anxiety. Actions taken are all about me and mine! Belief systems cannot easily be changed. You are stuck! But if rajas begins to enter the picture, then you begin to take care of security in a more materialistic, direct way. You believe in hard work to accumulate more money and possessions. You may even use deception and dishonesty to acquire them, continually looking for ways to get more and more! Having more makes you feel secure because your mind engages a lot in comparison. If your friend has the latest iPhone and you are still carrying a model that is several years old, you feel envious and you want it even though your phone works perfectly fine. This behavior is part of the ego aspect of rajas – to have more than what you need and to let others know it. In mooladhara this can show up as a strong sense of selfishness and opportunistic actions. There is virtually no generosity unless it yields a win/win outcome. There’s always a need to get something from the actions. Gradually as the consciousness evolves into sattwa, one begins to see the bigger picture. There is still a sense of pride in family, possessions and self that can feed the ego, but there dawns the understanding that possessions don’t provide inner security. There is a realization that you need just a fraction of what you have, and you begin to take actions that benefit others. You realize that when you give you don’t need anything in return other than the inner happiness that you gave. And when you reach this point an amazing phenomenon takes place. Life starts to fall into place. Your needs become less. Your sense of self is not prideful but authentic. You can embrace your strengths and accept your weaknesses. You can ‘see’ how your actions affect those around you, the environment, your own inner nature. A sense of security blossoms from knowing that you are able to see the bigger picture, and you will do your part in making that picture more beautiful. There is an inner knowing that whatever happens – I will be okay. At this point I hope you are asking, “How do I get to that point?” The short answer is ‘awareness’. Cultivating more and more awareness. To be able to see your thoughts and question your beliefs, to realize your attachments and acknowledge your fears. This require practice. To do this you will need to move out of your comfort zone. What!! Why? Why would anyone want to live outside one’s comfort zone? Well, because growth rarely happens within our comfort zones. We have to have a push. Think about some of the best, most valuable lessons you have learned in life? How many happened when life was moving along smoothly and all was well? And how many happened when you were challenged? When you had to find a new way of thinking, a new way of being? This time of chaos from the pandemic and the political and social unrest may just be the push you need. What security we have had through our normal routines has been challenged. Life is in flux. How are you responding to it all? How much anxiety and fear are you feeling and are you facing it? Or are you falling into the common coping mechanisms of denial and distraction? Where is your mooladhara sitting on the continuum of consciousness evolution? Personally, I feel my mooladhara is rajasic with a little bit of the light of sattwa showing me a glimpse of a different way of being. Generally, I am not as disciplined as people may think. I lean toward darkness and I tend to be overly busy to avoid dealing with that aspect of my nature. For me this means I need to bring more sattwa into my life - more sattwic foods, a more sattwic connection with my body and the environment around me. A more sattwic connection with my thoughts and feelings. So to help my evolution, I’m engaging in lifestyle changes that support me more fully – eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, walking with a friend outside every morning and walking on my treadmill every afternoon, getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night and doing the relaxation practice of yoga nidra regularly. I’ve increased my meditation practices and joined an advance yoga study group. To engage all of these changes during these last few months, pushes me out of my comfort zone. And you know what? It’s all good. I’m re-examining my dark side, my pattern of overcommitting and taking better care of myself so that I can take better care of others. I challenge you to experiment with living outside of your comfort zone. I would love to help you find the way. Through 2020, I’m offering free 15 minute clarity calls to support your growth. How many of you have watched SOOOO many people come and go from their network marketing business? And like myself, have you started to wonder WHY? Why do so many people fail in network marketing? The answer is quite simple -- these people treat network marketing as a HOBBY. ‘The Hobbyist’ is the overwhelmed, overworked, and underpaid network marketer, trying to ‘do it all,’ but feeling totally confused, and not able to produce any real, consistent results. The Hobbyist thinks, ‘Let me give this a try and see if it works…’ The hobbyist is not willing to COMMIT to the process of building a business and put in the necessary time and effort in the right activity during the early stages. Here are some of the main characteristics that describe The Hobbyist: Struggles with recruiting and building a team Fear and overwhelm are their 2 biggest enemies They possess a Sales Mindset in their business Focus most of their time on social media (think it IS their business) Held back by their past, no clear vision for their future Constantly dealing with self-doubt and comparitis Spends too much time consuming training and not enough time taking action I bet that many of you can identify with AT LEAST 1 of these things. If so, there’s a VERY GOOD chance you’re stuck in the Hobbyist Role in your business. How do you get out of The Hobbyist Role that’s been keeping you stuck for so long? You need to make the shift to being a REAL BUSINES OWNER. And so I’m going to spend this entire episode talking how you can make that shift and finally start thinking and acting like a Real Business Owner. Have you ever wondered why pumpkins are associated with Halloween? After all, they aren’t particularly scary and have nothing to do with ghosts. This episode begins with an explanation of why pumpkins and Halloween go hand in hand. www.pumpkin-patch.com I am sure you have wondered things like: Why do coincidences happen? Why is it so hard to find a 4-leaf clover? What day is best to buy a lottery ticket? Why do traffic jams happen? Rodney Olsen Welcome to Bleeding Daylight. Just a quick reminder that you can find Bleeding Daylight wherever you listen to podcasts, and you can connect with us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Today’s guest was convicted of 89 counts of money laundering, mail fraud, wire fraud, tax fraud and sentenced to 17 and a half years in federal prison. His remarkable story of life transformation and a wife who stood by him throughout everything is inspiring. Mike Savage was jailed for his beliefs. His beliefs were that he could get away with his crimes without getting caught. He's a former radio personality, television news anchor, and has been described as a criminal mastermind. These days he's an adjunct professor teaching Bible Theology and Psychology, and co hosts A Savage Perspective podcast with his wife Cynthia, Mike authored the book, A Prisoner's Perspective: Redemption of a Criminal Mastermind. Today, we get to explore his colorful life on Bleeding Daylight. Mike, thank you so much for your time. Mike Savage Well, it's a pleasure to be here. Thank you for inviting me. Rodney Olsen I know that the question on everyone's mind is what did he do to get sent to prison? Tell me about the days before you were caught. Mike Savage The best way to put it I try not to go into too much detail for two reasons. One, I don't want to glorify my sin and second, I don't want to give anybody any ideas of what to do to make extra money. I was a radio talk show host I was making very little money doing that in the 1980s when I was approached to do some work overseas which had to do with transferring large sums of money. It could be cash, sometimes other types of wire transfers, that sort of thing. Well, I made a little money to begin with and then suddenly discovered, you know, there's a lot more that could be made. So I got involved with doing that and so it was international money laundering. And then, in the United States, there's two there were two forms of money laundering. One was just general money laundering, and the other was international money laundering. I was convicted of both 89 counts of money laundering, mail fraud, wire fraud, tax fraud and so the sentence was 17 and a half years in federal prison. Rodney Olsen And I'm wondering now, about those people who knew you at the time, I imagine they didn't even know that this was going on. So this would have been a real surprise, especially for those people who were used to listening to Mike on the radio. He's a good guy, and suddenly you sent off to prison. Mike Savage Right? Well, no one knew what I was doing. My family didn't know the people that I was working with the time did not No, I had two lives. I had one the the family man, the working guy was working in Napa, California at the time on a radio station there. And no one had any idea. None whatsoever. I mean, I kept it totally away from them. The other side was the criminal side, which was an entirely as a Jekyll Hyde type of personality. The nice guy, the funny guy who was on the radio, the controversial guy on the radio suddenly became an entirely different person when it came to running a crime business and, and necessarily, so you can't be a nice guy when you're criminal, and being around other criminals. And so there was two different distinct Mike Savages at that time. Both liars, both cheating doing things that he shouldn't have been doing. I want to make this clear I accept responsibility for my crime I went to trial was proven guilty. I was guilty, I am guilty. I take responsibility. I don't want to downplay any of that, like, I was a nice guy to get caught up and stuff. That wasn't the case at all. I was not that people try to pay Oh, it wasn't a pretty nice guys. No, I was a liar. I was a liar. And I was really, really good at it. And until the Lord broke me down, I probably would have stayed on that path and ended up dead. But the amazing thing through all of this was that my wife, Cynthia, who had no idea what was going on, until the federal government, organized crime, Task Force, FBI, IRS, US Postal Service. Everybody came busting into our house, and she was six months pregnant at the time. And they took her away from it to reduce the stress. They told me that until you talk with us, we're not bringing her back. Well, they actually took her to breakfast, you know, they're being hard guys. And so my choice at that point was to I could have confessed and gotten much Last time, but instead I became the tough guy. And so this thing drew out and dragged out for over two years before we actually went to trial. Rodney Olsen So that day, this is the time that your wife finds out of what's been going on, you say that you weren't prepared to admit it to the authorities who came busting down your door. What did you say to your wife? Mike Savage I told her it was a mistake. They had the wrong person. I lied. I was a liar. I was unsaved. I was I was trying to cover my tracks trying to figure a way out of this and so I lied, and because she loves me so much, and she stayed with me through the entire incarceration. She's with me today in the other room, right? We're still together. And I got out in 2007. She loved me so much. She went along with with what I was saying she she would believe and that was it. It wasn't until much later that I would confess anything to her. That's after I'd been in prison for over two years. Rodney Olsen So at that stage, she believes that an innocent man has been sent to prison. She has no idea at this point that you were absolutely guilty. Mike Savage Yeah, that's right. And she was raising our children at the same time and sacrificing to come see me visit me in prison every other weekend. six hour drive each way six and a half hour drive from where she was living in the in the Napa area to Lompoc, California. So yeah, I was I was a rotten guy, truly a rotten guy. Rodney Olsen And what did that do to the trust in your relationship? When finally you admitted that over those two years of getting to trial, and then a couple of years into the sentence, all these years of continuing that lie? And you suddenly say, Well, actually, I did it. What happened to the trust between the two of you? Mike Savage It grew, it grew because she has always been trustworthy. To me and our relationship always been trustworthy, even though when I was trying to come up with reasons we should divorce While I was in prison, all this type of thing, she wouldn't have any of that at all. This is the the book honestly started out as an homage to her, and quickly morphed into oh my gosh, this is all about God. Only God could do this. Only God could bring a woman into my life before I got caught. Stay with me after I got caught through all the lies through all the stuff, stay faithful to me. And when I finally told her, she forgave me, she forgave me. Rodney of all of all the things I expected forgiveness was not one of them. But that was what came absolutely, totally, completely. And our relationship grew from from then on even further. If it could, I mean, it just it it mushroomed after that the idea of being able to just confess and say yeah, you know, look, I was I was bad. I got caught up and stuff. I had no business getting caught up in And I mean, the title of the book, the whole thing of the criminal mastermind is irony in the 1980s, and in the United States, they had this war on drugs and so forth. And I was convicted under drug statutes, even though drugs weren't part of the crime and every person that had more than one person working for them, was considered a criminal mastermind in the indictments. It was a it was like a template that was filled out if there was a kid on the street slinging drugs to and he had two or three people that work for him. He was a criminal mastermind it was the is the irony that everybody's a criminal mastermind at that particular time. I wasn't a criminal mastermind, I'd never been in trouble in my life. I just got greedy, and I fell for it and it was exactly the wrong thing to do. But it was a decision that I made willingly. I wasn't tricked, or duped into it. And then once I found out I was pretty good at it, then I expanded the enterprise and went from there. So that was, you know, that's just the way it is. I mean, I saw somebody say something about, you know, Mike never takes acceptance of response, but I did read the book, you know, I, I'm thinking I'm losing everything, including my wife and instead, God gave me the greatest gift, you know, eternal life and returned me to my wife. We've just continued to grow since then. Rodney Olsen And I imagine that label of criminal mastermind is really a masterstroke by the police because as soon as you're labeled, that you're going into court and assumed to be guilty if you're being called at a criminal mastermind, and still, they have to prove the guilt and, and obviously, as you've said, that was there but that's a great way to put the jury on your side right from the start, Mike Savage Right? This this type of crime will never have to we have to stand up to that stop. It'll never happen again. I mean, come on. I was before Bernie Madoff or any of these other people are doing anything and and it didn't stop or slow down. Anything people are going to send because they're centers, there's gonna be crime because there's criminals. You're not going to make an example. I mean, here in the US, and I'm not sure about Australia, we have the capital punishment or that sort of thing. But in the United States, certain states do. And there's even a federal law that allows under certain circumstances, but people are still killing people. Even though there's there's the capital punishment. So it speaks to the inherent evilness of man's heart. Mine in particular. I mean, it was a dark dark place, Rodney, it wasn't a again, I don't come across as Oh, I was a nice guy. I really was not a nice guy. There's a lot of things I wouldn't tell you about because I don't think the audience would be ready to hear that. When God reached down he had to come down a long way to grab hold of Mike Savage. Rodney Olsen You said that you had to eventually admit your guilt to your wife. Was there a part of you that found it difficult to even admit that to yourself? Were you kidding yourself to some degree and thinking, well, this is all justified, I need to make a living and this is my way to do it? Or did you just know straight out, I'm absolutely guilty? Mike Savage No, I lied to myself. I felt like I was caught up in something that I couldn't get out of. I'll be honest with you I prayed even when I was an unbeliever I remember praying the last couple of years before I got caught caught please get me out of this. This this is let me just get out of this. This is this is killing me this double life is I got to get out of this and the answer the prayer because I got I got arrested and put in prison. I was out of it. And I'm not making a joke there. I'm serious. I mean, that was that was an answered prayer. I see it now as an answered prayer. But at the time. My whole thought process was justification. I'm justifying this. This is what I do. If it was against the law, I would have been caught or I would know that it was against the law. All the justification in the world I would pour into my, but knowing deep down inside you know, that's a lie Mike. But going against that, no, no, no, I got to keep going. Gotta keep going. Gotta keep going. And I had people dependent on me, not just my family. But the crime people that I was they were dependent on me. So trying to stop wasn't really an option. I needed someone to help and God did help. I mean, there was that's a thorough cut when you go to prison. That's it. There's no coming back on this type of thing for me. I don't know what had been happened would have happened if I hadn't been saved in prison. I don't know what would have happened when I got out, or if I would have gotten out, you know, because it was just it was a dark, dark time where there's just no hope whatsoever of change. But initially, it was all justification. This is what I do. This is who I am. It's gonna be fine. I can handle this. All the lies you tell when you're trying to justify sin. Rodney Olsen And as for the money that you are making, through your, your job as a criminal mastermind. All this money. How much did you make and how did you hide that away from the people that knew you? Mike Savage in the 80s it really wasn't that much of a problem. Remember? There's no cell phones, there was no internet, the most advanced technology was faxing things from from one place to another. So moving money around was extremely easy transferring from one bank to a bank overseas or bank overseas to places in the United States. It wasn't a difficulty at all. I mean, that there weren't these limits on how much you can transfer now without reporting it to the Internal Revenue Service here in the US. So those laws and those things weren't in effect at that time. The amount that I was convicted of was $2 million, which back then was was quite, I mean, still quite a bit. Now. What am I saying? But I mean, back then it was even it was meant even more, but there was considerably more than that. That was moved around and that I got commissions on being able to do stuff. And the government traced virtually every penny of it and any property that we had that I had at the time, was seized and forfeited to the federal government. The banks overseas they talk about they have all the secrecy, you know, They rolled over instantly when the federal government asked them for the information. So they were able to track it, but it was they they got all the money that was left at the time of things that I hadn't bought or, or given to others or that sort of thing. It was it was millions of dollars. And it was it was very easy to do back. Rodney Olsen You mentioned that you had an encounter with God whilst you were in prison, that he did answer the prayer that you prayed even before knowing if he was real or not and so often I find that that's the way that we pray for an answer, and we get the answer we didn't expect, but that is the answer that God brings. Mike Savage Right. Rodney Olsen How far into your jail term did that actually happen? Mike Savage It was it was about two and a half years in. So the first I was first sent to the penitentiary in Lompoc, California. You know, it was classified as white collar criminal, all this kind of stuff, a civilian organized crime. They never proved any of that but I mean, they sent me to accidentally sent me to the penitentiary that they had misclassified my level of security supposed to be sent to a correctional institution which is a low, but I was sent to a very high level prison. So I was there for a short time till that got changed. And that I was transferred to the Federal Correctional Institution in Lompoc, which is right across the street from penitentiary. And I was assigned to the kitchen duty where I quickly ingratiated myself with some people there and began making alcohol for sale to the other prisoners. It's called pruno. And it was made with bread and yeast and sugar and I won't give the recipe out someone by trying it and going blind. But we would make that and so I had a little side hustle going on doing that I was also one of the guys making book, you know, for taking bets on football games and baseball games, basketball games, all that kind of stuff. So I fell right back into a criminal lifestyle. So I got into prison. So that was I was it was great. You know, it was where I got this. Now I can do this for the next you know, few years. But then about 18 months in I get transferred out of the kitchen where I was doing all this stuff to the chapels office the chaplains office and I became the lead chapel clerk. And I I didn't ask for the transfer obviously and and I went in and asked the chaplain, Why are you transferring me in here? Because I saw you on the on the compound he says, you know, Holy Spirit spoke to me about you and so I'm I wanted you to come work for me. And I said I look I don't know God I don't know any other stuff. You know, I've got time to do I'm not trying to sit around with a bunch of Bible thumpers or you know, Quran thumpers because like 13 different religious groups there you know from Muslims, Jews, Mormons, Jehovah Witness, Wiccans, all these Catholics, everything that you can think of right? So I don't want to be around people. Come on. He says now just give it a try. So I'm there and I know you gave me the responsibility for being in service. And then after the services are over with making sure everything was straightened out, everything was sorted, everything's cleaned out, ready for the next group ready for whatever was going to be coming in. And so over a period of six months, I'm going to all these different services, right? And not just Protestant service, I'm going to all of them and thinking this is the worst job in the world. Everybody thinks they're right. Everybody's got away to God, and we got to do this. You got to do that. Come on, come on. So the thing that I hated most was going to Protestant services. Because there was always this altar call at the end, where you know, you want to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, come forward, say this prayer, you'll be saved and I'm like, okay, right. I'm sitting in the back. And it was it had been a particularly rugged week for me. I'd argued with Cynthia, I wanted to divorce or over the phone and so I want to divorce now you're not going to divorce me? She was she's just adamant, there's not gonna be a divorce. So I'm miserable. I've got, you know, a million years left on my sentence. I mean, this is 1990s I don't get out until 2007. And I'm thinking, you know, that's Buck Rogers time back since 2000. Oh, that's far, far away. And I'm miserable and depressed and angry because I can't make the pruno anymore. I'm upset about not being able to involve the gambling and do any of this stuff at all. And I sat through so many of these Protestant services, I probably could have given the sinner's prayer, even being an unbeliever. It's just and so this particular night, I'm angry, I'm depressed, frustrated, I'm sitting in the back waiting for these guys, just the volunteers that come in and, you know, volunteers before come in and see me and let me pray for you. They put their hands on, oh, God tells me you're not going to do any more of your sentence. You're going to go home soon. And you know, truly rockin it every single day of my sentence, so none of their prophesizing work but I didn't know at the time I was just irritated. Just Just a miserable person. As I'm sitting In the back and vice of rotten week, I said, You know what, God, I'll tell you what if you're real, if you really are real, and all this stuff I've been hearing for these months is true. Show me something. Just show me something. And the guy's going into the sinner's prayer at the same time, and I'm just seeing it together. Show me something. Because I don't. This is his last chance. Show me something. And Rodney, I started crying. I don't cry. I'm not a crier. Never been a crier. But I start crying not not like crying, but like, weeping. And all I can describe, and I don't expect everybody to go through this. I don't expect a lot of people necessarily gonna believe me when I say this, but suddenly it's like a synapse in my brain that had been dormant fired and all those sermons I sat through, and all those things teaching seminars that I sat through and all the stuff that I was so miserable having to do. I suddenly understood, I got it. I understood and I, and I believed. It made sense to me for some reason, while I'm weeping like a baby, this, I'm a big guy, I'm 6'3" at the time, I was like, 280, now I'm 220 Thank You, Jesus. But this big old guy weeping in the back, and actually believing for the first time, not only in God, that God loved me. And I just, that's how I that's how I got saved. As I don't everybody goes through that I'm just this is just what happened to me. It's just what happened to me. And it was at synapse firing. All that stuff filtered through. I could understand what was being said. I wanted a closer relationship with with this person, who when I asked him to prove something to me, made me cry. You know, I've just kept my head down, waiting for everybody to leave. Now, usually the volunteers come and we say something. Nobody said he left. And so I finished up cleaning up the thing left with back to the, to the to the cell, and just laid there quietly, trying to figure this stuff out. A couple of days later had to go back to work. I go in and see the chaplain, I say, Look, let me tell you what happened. So I told him, he said, I've been waiting for that. Like, it's just, I've been waiting for this, Mike, this is this is great news don't. And I said, Well, that's, that's great news for you. But I have no idea what to do. I said, I am I supposed to go to every Bible study? I'm supposed to go every service one, what am I supposed to do? And he said, Just be patient. This is let's let's let's pray together. And we did. And let's see what God would have you do. About a week later, I was enrolled in seminary because I wanted to know If, like in the first chapter of John, when it says that, that Jesus is God, I remembered from the Jehovah Witnesses when they read it so that Jesus was a god. So the first thing I wanted to do was see in the Greek what it actually said, he says, we're gonna need to go to seminary. I said, Yeah, give me the Strong's Concordance, and let's go through this. And so when I saw, I said, Okay, then I was in, then I, all I wanted to do was learn. And I was 30 something years old. And all I wanted to do was learn about God. And so over the next, you know, what was 13 years? That's all I did was I learned, I went to seminary. I got my degrees. I'm trying to figure out okay, when I get out what am I called to do? And the chaplain was gone by then other chaplains are talking, Oh, God, I'll show you that. But you're called to be a Pastor Mike. And I was saying, that's cool. You know, that's great. I only have to work on what Wednesday to do a Bible study. And then Sunday, I preach and I'm rest of the week mine pretty much, right? So I had obviously, I had no clue as to what a pastor did. But I became a teacher. And I began teaching the other inmates and stuff that I was learning. And, you know, I would preach, got to the point when I transferred Finally, when my custody dropped far enough down, I was transferred to a camp in Taft, California. And we put together a choir, and we would go out and sing in the local churches, and I would preach, and it was, so it Okay, well, you know, I'm not, I'm an okay, preacher, I don't know. But I'm really a teacher and a counselor because I was counseling guys and doing things like that. And so it was it was a metamorphosis, you know, over the over the period of time from from this cocoon of prison to where coming out, you know, what am I going to be? Am I going to be, you know, an ugly duck might be a butterfly, you know, what's this and you shouldn't be the person I want you to be like, and so that's kind of in a nutshell, from you just asked me about salvation, but I kind of felt like you need to see the whole story of how it played out. It wasn't a Oh, I've got this now. My life has changed. This is a road to Damascus thing. There was no road to Damascus God had me do every single day of my time. And my wife waited for me every single day of that time, and suffered greatly by doing so. But she stayed nonetheless. And I mean, that's kind of tell you, I mean, it's amazing that our youngest child became a police officer a year and a half ago. How's that? People say God doesn't have a sense of humor. How's that for a sense of humor, but I mean, it's just been kind of a that type of a metamorphosis is taking place. Rodney Olsen So you were able to undertake those seminary courses whilst you're in prison. I guess that's one way of making sure that you have the time to study. Mike Savage Yeah, you know, I'm I don't know how many people you know, who have read all of Calvin's Institute's who've read most of the Pentecostal literature on preaching worship, teaching that story. thing, read through most of the word biblical commentaries, I went through all those. When I wasn't in the chapel. I was either at the weight pile, or I was in myself reading books. And if I could get away with reading books while I was on duty at the chapel, I did that too. I mean, I, I read every commentary I could get my hands on. I read different versions of the Bible. I learned the the Greek and the Hebrew writings, I can't pronounce it people laugh at me when I try and read it out loud because I didn't have anybody teaching me how to save the words. But that and I did some time with a priest and he was walking me through the Latin rights and Latin masses and, and going through those things. And so I had this this opportunity to get a world class education doing that. I was just amazed. You know, what I look back now. I'm amazed. But it was it was a rare opportunity. And I'm really glad I took that time to be able to read rather than you know, just In the stuff that I was starting out doing, Rodney Olsen it certainly has been a big change around. And you mentioned that initial chaplain who saw you out there and just felt the Holy Spirit saying, There's something about this guy, you need some sort of connection. Do you ever get a chance to catch up with him once you left prison? Mike Savage Thank goodness for Facebook, right? He found me. He knew when I was getting out, and we weren't allowed to communicate while I was in prison, but he had retired. And when I got out, he contacted me. So we have been in contact. This is just a wonderful, wonderful man of God. And there was there's another chaplain that I met at Taft that I'm still in contact with also he's retired as well. Just wonderful men of God that were instrumental in keeping me on the right path when I got to Taft, that there were some extreme rough edges because I'd been at higher level institutions and going into a camp it was entirely different. I had higher level institutions swearing is de rigueur, you know, it's part of the the process. So he, he had to work on my swearing, I had a tendency to, I felt like there were certain times where only a certain word would do you know, and I know that sounds strange for Christians but I have saved in prison I was educated in prison. So the the rough and he he worked as hard as he could to get those rough edges off of me and and I have to give him a lot of credit for, for having a lot of patience. There was times I would just I was amazed at some of the stuff that people would say that were the lower level institution. I mean, it's as low as it was no fence around it, not the walk off if you wanted to. But I mean, the people who come in were just straight from the streets where I've been in prison for over a decade. So if there was some some fisticuffs and other things that occurred just kind of leave it at that, but he I'm telling you, Rodney was the the Mike Savage of today is entirely different than the one that made it into that prison camp at the end for the final two years of a sense of Oh man, so that it's a It was a process and God always put the right people there to take care of that. Rodney Olsen There is a thought for some people that once you come to meet with God, you accept Jesus. There's that salvation that we talk about in Christian circles, that life gets pretty sweet after that. But you're saying that that's not quite the case. You still had to serve out that sentence. And that goes against the way that some people would like to believe. Mike Savage I had guys tell me, you just need to claim your way out of here. You just need to claim your way out Mike because God loves you. I said, show me one person that's claimed their way out of prison. Just one. I said, let's take a look at the scriptures. You know, where did Paul end up? Where did Peter end up? In prison. As if there's anybody that could have walked out? It's those two but they chose to stay. Why? Because their faith in God. I have faith in God that he's going to make now there weren't times that I wasn't still talking to Father and saying, hey, look, you know, this is this is good to go. I'm ready to go. But the thing is that the books that I read one of them was the practice of his presence by Brother Lawrence. Are you familiar with that book? Rodney Olsen I've certainly heard of it. Yes. Mike Savage Oh, that's the only way I pray anymore is this constant conversation I mean, whether I'm, you know, scooping dog poop in the backyard, or whether I'm cooking dinner, or whether the Bible open in front of me, He and I are in a conversation. When I teach prayer. When I teach the theology of prayer, one of the first things I tell the students is, from here on out for this for this semester, when you finish praying to God, do not say amen. Unless you're praying over food, because we don't want the food to get cold but other than that, we're forbidden from saying amen, because that's like hanging up the phone. You're done. Maybe he's not. And so would you be in conversation? And the first time I said that, I got reported to the Academic Dean who calls me to his office, I'm teaching heresy. I explained to him what I said, and he says I've never thought of that. That's a good point. And so the first lesson is for them. I want you to sit there for one minute, close your eyes and think about nothing but God just just got for one minute. Everything else is gone. Close your eyes. I'm timing. And of course, I'm a big guy. So these students are intimidating in prison. So they are their best right? At the end of one minute, okay, who was able to keep their mind on God for one minute without any intrusive thoughts, and whoever raises their hand, I'm going to call a liar, because there was no way you could do that. It takes practice. It takes effort. It takes building a relationship where you can be in conversation, and I learned that from Brother Lawrence. And Brother Lawrence said that even when he would forget when he would get caught up in the mundane things of life, God would call him back and we've got did call him back by the Lord's didn't have to fall down and apologize, guys, I know how you're from. Let's just continue where you left off. And they would have that communication. The same way Jesus did with his disciples when they were walking to me that was prayer. They're walking and talking to me, you're talking to God, that's perfect. He's talking back. That's the best form of prayer. So Those types of books made a big difference in my life. I didn't learn that in seminary. I just found the book and read it. It happened to be in the prison library. And it was it was a life changer for me. I mean, I walk around the backyard talking to God out loud. And occasionally some of the neighbors say you're talking to me. I know. Sorry. I was just thinking out loud cuz I don't tell him talking to God because I don't want him to think I'm crazy, right? But I do. Talk to him just like that every day. Walk around the house, my dogs will look at me. They know he's talking to God. He's not talking to us. My wife puts up with it, which is brilliant. I don't even realize I'm talking out loud to God but he brought me through so much. Why am I gonna give up on him now? Why? Why wouldn't I keep praying that way? Is our life terrific? Yeah. Because we're together. Doesn't mean we have millions of dollars or any of that type of thing. Sometimes it's tough to find a job, you know, for an ex con, who's a professor, an adjunct professor, rather than being a tenured professor. Sometimes it's tough, but he's never let us down. We went through hurricane Harvey a few years ago had bunch of stuff destroyed. God built it right back up. Went through another hurricane a couple of months ago. God was right there with his to do it again. And so it's kind of hard to doubt him. After all I've been through over the time being in prison and looking back and seeing what He did, it is hard to doubt that He's not going to do the right thing moving forward. So I mean, why would I doubt that will be the reason for that. He's never let me down before Why would he suddenly do that? Rodney Olsen At the end of your sentence, you're released and even though your wife Cynthia has stood by you all this time, was it like studying a new relationship coming out and having to set boundaries again and, and just begin again, from a new point? Mike Savage To a degree. Now understand when I left to go to prison, there was no cell phones, internet. Starbucks was just kind of starting type of stuff in California. When I get out, she hands me a cell phone. As I don't need his cell phone. I need to call anybody No, for 15 years you had to call me I wouldn't be able to call you. Okay. All right, I'm cell phone. I thought the internet was like a big library that everything was true on it. You can look stuff up. So I was anxious to to try that. But my behavior in prison. I'll give you an example. I got home shortly before Thanksgiving. And on Thanksgiving, the whole family came over right there stand in the house and I was talking all this. Well, 10 o'clock at night, you know, I was tired. So I went to bed. And Rodney when I say went to bed. I just got up and left and went to the bedroom, went to bed. And I got up the next morning. And Cynthia says, Are you mad? I said mad, what would I be mad about? I'm happy. I'm home. You know, this is great. I'm happy to be with you. You went to bed last night. You didn't say good night to anyone. Well in prison, you don't go around. Okay, night night, everybody. I didn't even dawn on me and I suddenly realize That that, you know, they talk about being institutionalized the idea that you become used to routines and institutions so you carry them with you. That's exactly what it happened. And so I had to learn to do those sort of things. Another example of that a few weeks later, Cynthia and our youngest son, we're going to the grocery store, get out the car, walk in a parking lot. This lady comes running up to Cynthia with a clipboard, asking if she registered to vote. And Cynthia is very polite, very elegant woman professional. She's director of case management for three hospitals here in Corpus Christi. Just a terrific lady. She goes, Yes, I have. Thank you. Okay. And so Jessie and I are beginning to talk. I mean, he's, he's a teenager. And so we were kind of struggling to establish a rapport. Me being there all the time. So we're talking about sports, we're talking about American football. And so we're going back and forth about football. We're still talking or walking up the street. There. All of a sudden ladies in front of me says, Did you register to vote? I just walked around or continue talking to Jesse. And we kept going. She comes around a second time gets right in front of me. I said, Did you register to vote? And I just walk around again, still talking to Jesse, third time, almost to the store. She She comes around, answer me, did you register to vote, but you don't point at people in prison like that you don't get in their face like that. I mean, it's just not something that's done unless you're looking for a fight. And so I informed her loudly that I was an ex con, I wasn't going to be able to vote, and that I just had 15 years in prison and the she needed to not stand in front of it. Only I used a lot of swear words to do it loudly and I'm a Christian at the time. Okay. But this is I'm acting, I'm acting out, you know, like, and so she kind of withers and goes away. I see Cynthia pull up the hood on her jacket and go into the store quickly. Jesse is my youngest son just beaming. He's, he's so happy. smiling. His old man just, you know, swore at this lady. I, you know, there's a little bit of the Holy Spirit convicting me. But sometimes the Holy Spirit wouldn't convict me until there was a lesson that had to be learned in the right lesson, the right person that we learned that lesson was there. Excuse me. Well, when I walk in, Cynthia's got her hood up. Got the grocery cart, trying to speed away, Hey, where are you going? Come here, come here. Let me let me push that for you. And it's what's wrong? And she said, you just you realize that you just very loudly swore at this lady and told everyone in hearing range that you're an ex con. Yeah. She said, there's nothing wrong with that, other than the swearing and being loud is nothing wrong being an ex con. But she says the people who heard you, they don't know what you did to go to prison. So they might think they're in the presence of a murderer or rapist or child abuser or something like that. You might consider that in the future beforehand. And that's when the Holy Spirit came said, Yeah, like, come on. Settle down. trust in me. Let me guide you a little. I had to learn that lesson that way. So there were a couple of times that I can remember right off the top of my head. That things did not go well. Yeah, I was a Christian. Yeah, I was saved. Yes, I believe all of those things, but I still had to change coming out of prison. So Cynthia and I, my relationship was great. She would support me through anything. But the children were kind of like, Who is this guy? Now? Well, Jessie loved the idea of the tough guy, ex con dad coming out. Daughter, not as much, oldest son not as much. So I had to learn to readapt into society. At the same time, be true to God, and be true to who he made me, which is sometimes I can be maybe a little loud or sometimes I can be a little, you know, demonstrative and in how I talk and I don't mean swearing, but I mean, I get close. Stop. I hardly ever do it from the pulpit anymore, right? No, I'm just kidding. I've. But it's one of those things I had to get back into me. Because I was a guy from the 80s coming out in 2007. You know, I it was rough inside prison. I mean, it's not I've been through riots. I've been through solitary confinement more times than I can count, but I never went to solitary confinement until after I was a Christian. Because I was always under suspicion for something because with the stuff that I used to do, I wasn't doing more so he must be doing something worse. So there was a change and things had to occur and I had to grow as a person as God wanted me to be outside of prison. And and that's that's been an ongoing process. Rodney Olsen Tell me a little of what life is like now. Very different to those prison days. And I'm sure that God is still teaching you lessons. But what does life look like for you today? Mike Savage When I turned 60, which was a year and a half ago. I thought, Okay, that's it. I'm done. You know, that's it. It's 60 that's old. You're finished. You know, we're going to, okay, I'm going to retire, and then slowly fade away. But it's, it's it hasn't been that way at all. I wrote the memoir. I've written a novel that I'm working on now. I finished up a dissertation for my doctorate in psychology over the last few years. And so today I'm an adjunct professor, I teach online, occasionally I go into the classroom. I enjoy being in the classroom. I enjoy teaching students and and challenging them and having fun with them. But I enjoy the time alone with God. I can see what was so appealing to to Francis Merton and his writings a Roman Catholic monk, a Trappist monk, about that this solitude of being God. And so there are days when I have contact with them. No one but Cynthia, and I can, I'm content with that. There are other days that I'll have me doing interviews, or we'll be interviewing people have classes, and I'm busy going back and forth. And it's fine. But any problems that arise, I always put into the perspective of what I've been through in the past and how God was faithful with that. And I've been in prison riots where, you know, things got ugly in a hurry, and he still protected me. And so, I always give the example of this way in prison when they say that brother is gonna stab you in the back. They mean it literally. It's not like it's not a metaphor of, he's going to say something bad about you. So there's this perspective that I've been that I've been given by God, that it's okay to be alone. Because you're not alone because you're with God. It's okay if if people don't always remember your name or they're not struck by this interview or by reading one of your books are. That's okay. That's okay. And so my life is one of pleasant solitude at times of pleasant action at times, but of trying my best to be led by God and whatever he wants me to do it and sometimes that's moment to moment because sometimes I can get a little restless, I'll admit. And that's time of Okay, we'll pick up the guitar. You know, let's just talk Mike why you play your little chords, or, you know, let's let's write some more. Let's edit some more. This is a quiet more contemplative time and I've described it to Cynthia as being in solitary confinement, with privileges. But I mean, it's a good life. Our children are all grown. We have five grand sons. It's an enjoyable life because I see it through how God wants me to see it in times that I get restless. I realize I'm just being kind of a knucklehead and just to settle down. Rodney Olsen I'm going to put some links to your website in the show notes at bleeding daylight dotnet. But for anyone listening, what's the easiest way for them to get in touch with you? They want to pick up a copy of your book and delve further into your story or listen to the podcast. Where should they go? Mike Savage Well, I made it pretty simple. If they want to buy the book, it's on Amazon. It's called a prisoner's perspective, the redemption of a criminal mastermind. So it's right there on Amazon. If you're interested in finding out more about me or for whatever reason that may be, you can go to MikeSavageBooks.com. That's, that's the website and I'm also on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram. And I'm not a master of any of those, but I am capable of returning messages. So if I can at least do that, but the that's the best way to get in touch. I appreciate your you're putting those out there. Thank you, Rodney very much, Rodney Olsen Mike. It has been a delight hearing your story to hear where you've come from and where God has you headed and I'm sure that the story is not over yet but thank you so much for your time today on Bleeding Daylight. Mike Savage Thank you very much. Emily OlsenThank you for listening to Bleeding Daylight. Please help us to shine more light into the darkness by sharing this episode with others. IntroductionWe (Tim, Celvin, and Yr. Obt. Svt.) are thrilled to announce our new endeavor: EPM Conversations. If you’ve made it to this page you are about to experience the joy that is the three of us – and many more of our fellows in the EPM/CPM world.WhatWhat is EPM Conversations? It’s a forum for you to hear your peers as they discuss why, what, and how they exist and thrive in our little corner of the software world. You will hear opinion, advocacy, a fair amount of skepticism when it’s deserved, and always a keen curiosity. What you will not hear is any negativity from the interviewers or the interviewees. This isn’t gotcha journalism but a collegial place to share ideas. NB – every guest has final say over content to preclude personal embarrassment/potential unemployment/likely lawsuits. You are not going to hear one of us (Tim and I personally think this will be Celvin and we will do our utmost to dissuade him from reading Groovy or VB.NET or MDX aloud) go on and on about detailed code and (beyond the basics) techniques but we will always cover the considerations, approaches, and philosophy that make us who we are in the EPM world.WhoWho will you hear? People just like you: customers, consultants, software companies, and even people who just might drive you in a new professional direction (never fear, this is not NSFW and definitely all about W). We currently have 12 guests who were foolish gracious enough to agree to be our guests.WhyWhy will you listen to EPM Conversations? You’ll listen and care because we’re going to bring the human – the connection, really – that a blog or a book or an article can never really convey. Think about why technical conferences are so valuable: yes, of course, technical content is key but so are the people you meet, people that you’d never even hear of within your formal job. EPM Conversations will bring home to you the person behind the name, the presentations, the message boards. WhenWhen will you hear new podcasts? Look for new content every three weeks or so. WhereWell, right here. We’re also on Apple Podcasts and Google Play.Join us, won’t you?

Conversations with Karel Feeling Your Food Pain Plus Money Rules so...starts with Karel totally understanding how your schedule may prevent you from eating well given his new project. But that doesn't mean you get to NOT do it, even if it's hard. So how do you do it? Well, you physically have to make time for it, no matter what you are doing. And if you can't you're doing the wrong thing. Nancy's hair do has now gone global. But should it? The President is by far the worst person in the world on Coronavirus, not Nancy Pelosi. Was she duped? If so, staff heads should roll. While everyone is screaming about Trump, who is funding him? Congress. The golf trips? Congress. The wall, Congress. The attack in Lafayette Park, Congress. Congress pays for everything. Why? Why not shut off the money to Trump?
Episode 70 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast takes us back to our roots… and boy, is it a trip! Our feature of the day is the 1991 South-remake LOVE, starring Salman Khan, Revathi, Rita Bhaduri, Shafi Inamdar, and sadly enough, Amjad Khan. This topnotch pick comes courtesy an old friend of the podcast and shy netizen Shakeela aka @Get_Filmy (https://twitter.com/get_filmy) whom you should follow on Twitter for some absolutely scorching Bolly takes. Love is a complicated film whose sole purpose appears to be to beg the question WHY? Why... do people forget that Salman has consistently done South remakes throughout his career instead of it being a career saving ploy in the 2000s? Why... is Salman so beautiful in this film? Why… is Revathi his best co-star? Why… does everything escalate in two seconds? Why… does all Bombay know Salman’s scandalous past? Why… is Salman a musician? Why… did Shakeela do this to us? And other burning questions. A Short Timeline: · 02:30 A small eulogy to the Twitter that was · 07.45 Asim and Sujoy talk about what they watched on Zee 5’s new streaming platform · 17.25 Asim Abbasi’s CHURAILS on ZEE5 has our very own Asim pretty chuffed (spoiler free) · 32.50CLASS OF 83 on Netflix reminds us that we’re none of us Boobians :/ · 39.30 We nearly forgot GUNJAN SAXENA: THE KARGIL GIRL on Netflix but it’s not half as bad as some make it out to be? A woman started dating a transman. But then his personality completely changed. I this just a trans thing? Or a coincidence? A verse dyke working as a nanny in an uptight conservative community can't find any other lesbians. She's so horny she would settle for a man. But how can she find someone willing to be her "walking dildo?" On the Magnum, a deep dive into cuckolding, with the utterly charming Venus from the Venus Cuckoldress Podcast. What drives a man to be turned on watching his partner get together with other men? What's in it for the woman? It's a wild, wild world and Venus takes us through it. And blechhhh! Her man douses himself in cologne. She HATES the smell of cologne. He knows this, and still pours buckets of expensive chemicals on himself to mask his natural, lovely body scent. Why? Why do they do this? Our caller is worried about hurting his feelings. So she sits there and suffers. If you smell something, say something. 206-302-2064 voicemail@savagelovecast.com Today’s Lovecast is brought to you by MeUndies.com: High quality, super-comfortable, good looking undies. Why? Why would you DO that?
Today we’re looking at the history of underwear. The first question you might ask is…Why? Why spend time thinking about something so mundane, so personal, so domestic? Because something so personal and utilitarian can give us a real glimpse into the way people lived their most personal lives hundreds of years ago. Throughout history, people responded to changes in climate and technology, to wars and regimes being overthrown, to hunger, to marriage and birth and death in public ways. They also responded in private ways. And private choices are sometimes represented by these most private moments and bits of clothing, worn away from the public gaze. Looking at the private moments can help us understand who those people really were. And understanding them helps us understand where we come from, who we are, and who we can be.So let’s take a look at what’s happening under all those glamorous clothes!
Why? Why did my loved one die? It's a question that likely has a tangible answer whether it be disease or accident. But the real why comes on a spiritual level: why God, didn't you save them? Why did you allow my loved one to die? Heavy questions and ones that even our friend Pastor Jim Reynolds asked himself when he and his wife lost a baby some 16 years ago. Death and crises of faith can feel like standing in quicksand and trying to lay a brand new foundation of faith that is solid enough and strong enough to keep you safe and steady takes work.
Are You a Victim or are you a Person of Action? Exploring Our Post-Pandemic Mindset and Changing it for Good "Something bad happened to me!" We can process the emotion in the best possible way. We all have a person of action and a victim inside of us. When a problem comes, we can blame others. But if we choose to become a person of action we decide this is OUR problem. Making the shift out of the default victim to the transforming Person of Action. Notice when you're taking the victim role. The clues can show up in your body: tensed jaw, tight shoulders, upset stomach, etc. Coping with stress can also show up in eating junk food and treats. Maybe you're looking outside of yourself for a solution or begin blaming others. Instead ask yourself "How can I move forward?" Be vulnerable. Share how you're feeling with a significant other. "What am I going through right now?" Ask better questions. "What does this make possible?" "What would someone I admire do in this situation?' What are we responsible for? There are things outside of our control but we have control over a lot if we change our perspective. We can take some action and take a different approach. Our Amazon products were deemed non-essential and our income was on hold as a result of Covid-19. Example of unhelpful, victim questions: "Why? Why me? Why is this happening? Why is this happening to us?" We had to accept our situation because there was nothing we could do about it. Our Airbnb was also shut down as U.S. travel came to a halt. We were victims of the pandemic, losing our livelihood. Maybe you too are in the middle of a trying, difficult circumstance. It's still possible to make progress while frustrated. Grieve with personal responsibility. Acknowledge the emotion and also ask "What's my next step?" Bad things happen in life and we respond to it in the most honoring way to yourself and the people around you.
