Send us a textIn this episode we explore the first transatlantic passenger flights of Pan Am's Boeing 314 flying boats in the late 1930s and we welcome back to the program Pan Am flight attendant and author Becky Sprecher who will share her insights -and family history– of these flying clippers!Becky was our guest in Episode 7: Flying the Line and Episode 29 AIDS Epidemic of the 1980s, Remembering Those We Lost. To learn more about Pan Am's flying boats, listen to Episode 3: Flying Boats, Irish Coffee, and a Hollywood Star and Episode 8: A Lifetime of Romantic Adventure... From Flying Boats to Jumbo Jets after listening to this installment. On March 29, 1939, the Yankee Clipper made history and took off from Baltimore to Europe under the command of Captain Harold Gray. On this inspection flight, the clipper traveled to the Azores, Lisbon, Marseilles, Southampton, and Foynes and back. On June 17, 1939, Pan American arranged for a special flight for 16 members of the press departing from Port Washington on the Atlantic Clipper; a brilliant marketing and public relations strategy for the airline. This press flight is historically and culturally significant because the radio reporters on board reported live at an altitude of 10,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean to listeners all over the country tuned into their radio sets with great interest. The cost for a one-way ticket to Europe was $375 (that's about $8,500 in 2024 money adjusted for inflation) or $675 roundtrip (which is over $15,000 today). There are no original Boeing 314 flying boats in existence today. However, the Foynes Flying Boat Museum in Foynes, Ireland ahs an impressive full-scale replica of the Yankee Clipper you can tour with every detail accurately recreated. The Records of Pan American World Airways Inc. are part of the Special Collections of the Richter Library of the University of Miami. On February 21, 1943, Pan American Airways' celebrated seaplane—the Yankee Clipper—took off from New York and island-hopped its way across the Atlantic Ocean. Arriving at Lisbon the following evening, it crashed in the Tagus River, killing twenty-four of its thirty-nine passengers and crew. In her new book, Americans in a World at War: Intimate Histories from the Crash of Pan Am's Yankee Clipper (Oxford UP, 2023), author Brooke L. Blower traces the backstories of seven worldly Americans aboard that plane, their personal histories, their politics, and the paths that led them toward war. This vivid narrative captures the dramatic stories of these seven people and, through them, the impact of Americans' global connections before and during World War II. Long before GIs began storming beaches and liberating towns, Americans had forged extensive political, economic, and personal ties to other parts of the world. These deep and sometimes contradictory engagements, which preceded the bombing of Pearl Harbor, would shape and in turn be transformed by the U.S. war effort. The intriguing biographies of the Yankee Clipper's passengers—among them an Olympic-athlete-turned-export-salesman, a Broadway star, and two entrepreneurs accused of trading with the enemy—upend conventional American narratives about World War II. Americans in a World at War offers fresh perspectives on a transformative period of U.S. history and global connections during the “American Century.” Brooke L. Blower is an Associate Professor of History at Boston University. James Kates is a Professor of Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Learn more about your ad choices. In 1968, songwriter Paul Simon asked the question, " Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio?" in the hit song, Mrs. Robinson. This week BKP host Jake Robinson, anectodotally re-ask the very same question, as Backwards K Pod does a deep dive into the history, and the mystique of Joltin Joe Dimaggio, the Yankee Clipper. He was one of those rare athletes like Babe Ruth, Muhammed Ali and Michael Jordan, who trancended sports, and became a part of the American conscience during the 20th Century. He was the end of a bygone era. During the days when men wore suits and a hat. On the field and in the public eye, Joe displayed the elegance and grace that made him special. From his youth in San Francisco, to his amazing baseball career with the New York Yankees, to his marriage to glamour girl Marilyn Monroe. Eddied Cantor had a 20 year career on radio, and for a good reason... he was an extremely talented performer. He was a comedian, a singer, an actor and knew how to connect with his audiences. They loved him. I am going to begin an Eddie Cantor Playlist as there are many programs of exceptionally good quality sound that are crying out to be heard! The guest on this show is Joe DiMaggio.. nicknamed "Joltin' Joe," "The Yankee Clipper" and "Joe D" He was an American baseball center fielder who played his entire 13 year career in Major League Baseball for the New York Yankees. He and Eddie have a couple of routines together on this show. And of course the lovely Dinah Shore sings and plays her roles in a skit or two. This is just the second track for Eddie Cantor on Heirloom Radio... a different oldies program!

Well… Twitter rolls out plans 'to protect' US midterm elections and suppress 'misleading information' Twitter has rolled out some new terms and policies ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, during which the Republican Party is expected to overtake the Democrats to earn a majority in the US House. The election is seen as a barometer of how the Biden administration and their leadership has performed since taking office, and so far, the pressure is definitely on. These changes are in addition to those made in the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election, in which Twitter's suppression and censorship of information played a key role in misinforming the public. Twitter is stepping up to bolster their terms and prevent "misinformation," that catch-all concept for anything that goes against the Democrat-driven narrative. As such, they've announced "steps we're taking ahead of the US midterms to protect civic conversation on Twitter." As they've done in international elections, Twitter is now "activating enforcement" of their "Civic Integrity Policy for the 2022 US midterms." Twitter states that their Civic Integrity Policy "covers the most common types of harmful misleading information about elections and civic events," which include: false claims about how and where to vote, voter intimidation, and "misleading claims intended to undermine public confidence in an election," which includes "false information about the outcome of the election." When Twitter mods encounter information they believe comes under the "harmful misleading information" category, they will "not recommend or amplify this content," and will provide a "prompt prior to liking or sharing labeled tweets, and in cases where there is potential for harm associated with the false or misleading claim, the Tweet may not be liked or shared to precent the spread of the misleading information." In the lead up to the presidential election in 2020, Twitter suppressed and censored reporting by the New York Post that tied then candidate Joe Biden to his son Hunter's overseas business dealings, with insinuations and allegations of influence peddling. Twitter believed reports coming out of the Biden campaign, and other sources, that claimed the information had been obtained through hacking, a disallowable practice, or was "Russian disinformation." This suppression had an impact on the US presidential election, potentially skewing results in Biden's favor, as polls later indicated. https://thepostmillennial.com/breaking-merrick-garland-confirms-he-personally-approved-mar-a-lago-raid-refuses-to-take-questions?utm_campaign=64487 Merrick Garland confirms he personally approved Mar-a-Lago raid, refuses to take questions In a Thursday press briefing, United States Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed that he "personally approved" of the FBI raid at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, and announced that the Justice Department has filed a motion to unseal the search warrant. Garland told the public that "I personally approved the decision to seek a search warrant in this matter," noting that the Justice Department "does not take such a decision lightly." https://rumble.com/v1fng2x-ag-merrick-garland-delivers-a-statement-about-the-fbi-raiding-trump.html - Play Video Garland has about as much spine as a jellyfish… and can I just ask, where were the FBI raids when Hillary Clinton deleted over 30,000 emails, and literally got an ambassador and numerous contractors killed in Benghazi… Where has the FBI been when all of the names and allegations came out about Jeffrey Epstein? Oh by the way, Bill Clinton was on that list… How about the Biden family? How about Hunter Biden’s lap top? How about him spending money on hookers? and their shady business dealings with China? Ladies and gentleman, we need to be praying that our Lord would continue to shine a light in the darkness of our wicked government, and tear down the high places. The revised guidance – released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday – lifts the requirement to quarantine if exposed to the virus, deemphasizes screening people with no symptoms and updates COVID-19 protocols in schools, eliminating a recommendation for test-to-stay after potential exposure. "This guidance acknowledges that the pandemic is not over, but also helps us move to a point where COVID-19 no longer severely disrupts our daily lives," the CDC's Greta Massetti said in a statement. "We know that COVID 19 is here to stay," she added in comments during a briefing with reporters. The update isn't necessarily a huge overhaul of the existing guidance, but it does represent an increasing focus on individuals making their own decisions about their level of risk and how they want to mitigate that risk, said Dr. Marcus Plescia, chief medical officer for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. "That is consistent with where we are in the pandemic right now," he said. "I don't really think there are many state or local jurisdictions that are feeling they're going to need to start making mandates." It also brings the recommendations for unvaccinated people in line with people who are fully vaccinated – an acknowledgment of the high levels of population immunity in the U.S., due to vaccination, past COVID-19 infections or both. "Based on the latest ... data, it's around 95% of the population," Massetti said, "And so it really makes the most sense to not differentiate," since many people have some protection against severe disease. The changes could have some of the biggest impact in K-12 schools. The guidance eliminates the strategy known as "test-to-stay" – a schedule of testing for people that were exposed to the coronavirus but not up to date with their vaccinations – that allowed them to continue in-person learning, so long as they continued to test negative and showed no symptoms. The test-to-stay protocol has been an alternative to quarantine for school, so now "the practice of handling exposures would involve masking rather than a quarantine," Massetti said. You have no idea how frustrating that last article was to read ladies and gentleman. Now before we go… it’s time for my favorite topic… sports! I had an email sent into me by a Daily News Brief listener named Jeremiah Leidenfrost, titled Joe DiMaggio. The email reads: Hey Garrison, I found this newspaper in a house remodel from 1937 talking about Joe DiMaggio. The newspapers were stapled to the inside of the siding as insulation. I thought I would show you this since you like sports. Enjoy, Jeremiah Leidenfrost Now on the news paper, it reads: Joe DiMaggio, the sensational sophmore outfielder of the world champion New York Yankees, today came to terms for the 1937 season. Col. Jacob Ruppert, owner of the club announced that DiMaggio, had accepted the club’s offer, understood to call for a salary of $15,000, and an increase of pay of $6,500 over last tear’s pay to the youthful slugger. For those who don’t know about Joe DiMaggio, nicknamed "Joltin' Joe", "The Yankee Clipper" and "Joe D.", was an American baseball center fielder who played his entire 13-year career in Major League Baseball for the New York Yankees. Born to Italian Sicilian immigrants in California, he is widely considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time, and had a 56-game hitting streak (May 15 – July 16, 1941), a record that still stands. Off the field, Gabe told me he was also known for his marriage to Marilyn Monroe! It didn’t go well… The union was troubled from the start by DiMaggio's jealousy and controlling attitude; he was also physically abusive. A violent fight between the couple occurred immediately after the skirt-blowing scene in The Seven Year Itch that was filmed on September 14, 1954, in front of Manhattan's Trans-Lux 52nd Street Theater. Then 20th Century Fox's East Coast correspondent Bill Kobrin told the Palm Springs Desert Sun that it was director Billy Wilder's idea to turn the shoot into a media circus. The couple then had a "yelling battle" in the theater lobby.[49] After returning from New York City to Hollywood in October 1954, Monroe filed for divorce from DiMaggio after only nine months of marriage. Oh by the way, Bill Clinton was on that list… How about the Biden family? How about Hunter Biden’s lap top? How about him spending money on hookers? and their shady business dealings with China? Episode 56 of The Far Middle is dedicated to Lawrence Taylor, arguably the NFL’s greatest defensive player and one of the best-ever college football players. Nick comments on how “LT” excelled on the gridiron but struggled off the field and explains that both professional and personal success require work. Achieving success in both is one of the goals of the CNX Foundation Mentorship Academy – the focus of this week’s episode. The innovative Academy program just concluded its inaugural year. Nick looks back on the factors that led to the initiative’s creation and its success. He highlights the importance of dedicated partners and mentors and discusses the maturation of the participating students. He concludes by noting Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak – a treasured record that was a close second for this week’s dedication. Nick points out that The Yankee Clipper grew up in a working poor family, similar to some of the Mentorship Academy students. “Let’s make sure that our young adults out there, in America’s urban and rural communities, that they’ve got a shot at realizing their untapped greatness, just like DiMaggio,” Nick concludes.

April 1993: A small village in Sicily prepares for the first visit of 78-year-old baseball legend Joe DiMaggio to the town where his parents were born and raised. Fishermen, artisans, grandmothers — some 3,000 villagers brush up on The Yankee and Marilyn Monroe. Italian and American flags are strung from the buildings, two thousand baseballs are purchased for Joltin’ Joe to autograph. A feast of sea urchins, calamari, pasta sarda and marzipan is cooked in his honor. Nearly the entire annual budget of the town is spent preparing to celebrate the homecoming of the Yankee Clipper. The Mayor, the City Council, the Police Commissioner and hundreds of other Sicilian well-wishers gather at the airport in Palermo waiting to greet their “native son.” But he never comes.

The real Joe DiMaggio -- remembered by the man who knew him best in the last decade of his life. Candid and little-known stories about icons from Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, and his Yankees teammates on the field to Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and other great celebrities off the field. Dr. Rock Positano, an internationally renowned foot specialist in New York City, was introduced to Joe DiMaggio by Bill Gallo in 1990. The Yankee Clipper's career-ending heel spur injury and botched surgeries brought them together. During the time Dr. Positano successfully treated DiMaggio, a friendship slowly developed. As Dr. Positano would learn, DiMaggio moved carefully and deliberately. Dinner with DiMaggio follows the story of their friendship from its starstruck beginning through its highs and lows over the next decade. Forty years younger than DiMaggio, Dr. Positano became like a surrogate son. Positano's accounts of their times together reveal DiMaggio's many rituals and quirks. At the pinnacle of his fame, DiMaggio had learned to be guarded and carefully managed his image and private life. As his trust in his young friend grew, DiMaggio opened up about Marilyn, but also about his first wife, Dorothy Arnold, the mother of his son. The Yankee Clipper knew everyone, and Positano shares never-before-told stories of famous people DiMaggio admired and those he didn't. The stories and experiences he shared with Rock Positano comprise an intimate portrait of one of the great stars of baseball and one of the icons of the twentieth century. Dr. Rock Positano is the Founder and Director of the Non-Surgical Foot and Ankle Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, where he has been on staff since 1991. He graduated from Yale School of Medicine. Positano is a clinical assistant professor at Weill Cornell Medical College. He is internationally known for his non-surgical approach for the treatment of foot disorders. On a May evening, Dr. Rock Positano and John Positano led a compelling Clubhouse conversation. Pull up a chair at your dinner table and listen in...

Steffen Deux’s mixing of the ‘5 Years of 8 Bit’ compilation saw the poacher turn gamekeeper. Having previously had his own music appearing on compilations such as Cocoon’s ‘Party Animals’, the 8 Bit mix allowed him to step up and demonstrate his talents as a DJ rather than producer. As a native of Mannheim, Steffen began to hone his craft as a resident DJ at Ludwigshafen's notorious Loft Club, which regularly hosts guests like Villalobos, Carl Cox, Nick Curly and Marco Carola. 2010 saw the dawn of significant international exposure with dates at Kehakuma in Ibiza, Mac Arena Mar in Barcelona and more recently on the ‘5 Years of 8 Bit’ tour at Watergate in Berlin. These recent outings have given Steffen the opportunity to show off, in a live environment, the groovy, melodic and always danceable house music he demonstrates on the ‘5 Years….’ mix. Though having only released a handful of music, Steffen has had remarkable success, with almost half of his releases being snapped up and included in major compilations: ‘Yankee Clipper’ on Cocoon’s ‘Party Animals’; ‘Shosholoza’ on ‘5 Years of 8 Bit’ and then, most recently, with Dorian Paic selecting ‘Hungry’ for his ‘Cocoon Heroes’ mix. ...SORRY NO TRACKLISTING...
