Super Bowl champion and US Rugby Olympian Nate Ebner chats with Trey Elling about FINISH STRONG: A FATHER'S CODE AND A SON'S PATH. The book tells the story of Nate's special relationship with his father growing up, his dad's tragic murder, and how Nate used the lessons learned from his dad to walk on at Ohio State Buckeyes football, win three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, and represent US Rugby at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Nate and Trey discuss some of those details.
Nate Ebner and I were childhood friends and teammates in sport. As our paths diverged from one another, Nate is a human being that I have drawn immense motivation from in watching his success on and off the field. Nate went from not playing football in highschool, to walking onto The Ohio State University. That is no small feat, while also leaving behind an opportunity to travel the world and be a professional rugby player. Nate's story of how he developed his values is one that everybody can learn from. Through hard work and determination you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Nate went from being a walk-on, to team captain, to getting drafted by the New England Patriots. He won 3 Super Bowls in his career, and also was afforded the opportunity to become an Olympian in the RIO 2016 Olympics where his Rugby dreams came true. Nate lost his father to a tragic accident, and in his story of redemption and perseverance Nate channeled everything his father ever taught him and accomplished some of his biggest dreams. We talk about it all, and we also dive into what is next in the life of Nate Ebner. I think you're going to really enjoy this episode. Willie Colon & Steven Cheah discuss the proposed CBA and break down what that means for both sides (00:37 - 17:13), discuss Tony Romo's new deal with CBS (17:14 - 21:57), and recap Steven Cheah's 40-yard dash while Willie issues a challenge (21:58 - 30:59). 3x Super Bowl Champions, New England Patriots Safeties Nate Ebner & Patrick Chung were in studio and with Steve while Willie was out on paternity. They talk being owners of the New England Free Jacks Rugby Team, what Super Bowl XLIX was like vs. Seattle and what exactly happened on that final play for Seattle, the 28-3 comeback vs. the Falcons in Super Bowl LI and how the team never wavered, how they held the Rams to 3 points in Super Bowl LIII, what Giants fans can expect from Joe Judge, how Ernie Accorsi fits in, what the Pats will miss with Dante Scarnecchia's departure, being in Steve Belichick's Safeties room, who in fact was calling the defensive plays in New England this past season, and how the team will operate if Tom Brady leaves (33:19 - 1:07:42), and an interview recap with Steve & Willie (1:07:51 - 1:14:20).
My guests today are fellow rugby players and Chicago Lions, Mike Harriett and Luke Thiem from Re:Mind Recover. Concussions have been a big problem for a while in contact sports and in the last few years there has been an increased awareness of concussions, head injuries and brain health. It was brought into the public spotlight through an Oscar nominated film, Concussion starring Will Smith was released and exposed how concussions in football have led to serious health injuries later in life. Mike and Luke identified the problem and experienced it, through concussions of their own, and they came up with an solution to help recovery and support a healthy brain function that includes a proactive approach to brain health rather than reactive.
