Drummer Will Rigby provided the propulsion, grooves and furious fills for the dB's, a North Carolina foursome who launched their collective career in New York City yet had their powerfully poppy first two albums released only overseas. Now the dB's landmark 1981 debut, Stands for Decibels, finally has come out in the U.S. on vinyl and streaming services, with Repercussion to follow, and the classic lineup of singer-songwriters Chris Stamey and Peter Holsapple, bassist Gene Holder and Rigby will tour for the first time in 12 years. The ever-engaging Rigby recalls the band's formation with Stamey, the addition of Holsapple, the making of those early dB's albums, the reasons behind Stamey's departure and the more American sound of 1984's Like This. Rigby also discusses his own idiosyncratic songwriting and his work with other artists, such as Steve Earle. (Photo by John Gessner)

Gene and cohost Tim Swartz introduce Fortean researcher Dennis Stamey, someone Gene first met 50 years ago. Dennis became interested in UFOs in 1966 during the worldwide flap of the late 1960s, immersing himself in magazine articles written by John A. Keel. As well he studied the works of Charles Fort, and Gray Barker. Eventually he started churning out a cheap mimeographed newsletter entitled Spacecraft Review and also contributed articles to Gene Steinberg's Caveat Emptor. He also took up a correspondence with Richard Shaver, who often called him an "idiot." By the 1970s, life called and Dennis set his interests in UFOs and the paranormal aside. However, starting in the early 1980s, he began looking up Fortean articles in the N.Y. Times from 1870-1890, growing intrigued with phantom snipers and slashers.  His first fact book, "Mysterious Snipers, Slashers, and Animal Rippers: A History of Paranormal Assailants," was co-authored with his children, Jillian and Jesse Stamey.

I was born, and grew up, in Memphis, learned the basics of reading music at a young age, and got my first guitar at around age 5. Self-taught for the most part, I took lessons from a few key figures: Bob Salley (a university instructor) at age 14, Shawn Lane (a musical phenom) at age 18, was a University of Memphis music student for 2 years. Later, when I arrived in Maine I studied guitar for a year with the truly gifted Bob Thompson. In my teens I started playing in original and cover bands (rock, R&B, and blues). I played out a lot, mostly in town, sometimes other states down south. I had the privilege of recording in a few of the landmark studios in Memphis, which brought me into contact with incredible people. Some of my work was on original music, and some was in an effort to be a studio musician: playing on song demos for writers, or cutting jingles, theme songs, or really anything. From 1998-2002 I took a detour and attended the East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City, TN. During those years I played in a popular local cover band. From 2002- 2007 I completed my medical training in Tampa, FL, and Houston, TX. There was no time for playing in bands during that time, (though a few gigs did happen). In 2007 my family and I moved to Maine, where I started practicing medicine. After about 5 years of practice I began playing out again or a limited basis. In 2018 I joined an established cover band in Brunswick. From summer 2021 until February 2022 I recorded the album get up in my home studio in Harpswell. After forming the dbs in Chapel Hill 40 years ago with Peter Holsapple, Chris has carved his own unique and diverse solo path. To prove my point, this year he released a new album New Songs for the 20th Century that was heavily influenced by the likes of Cole Porter and Henry Mancini! I ask Chris why the change in style, but he doesn't see it that way. In fact, this interview goes a little sideways. You be the judge as to why.  And speaking of interviews going sideways, we've included my infamous too brief chat with Richard Lloyd. He didn't like me either!  So, our Christmas gift to you is to expose our flaws with two artists we greatly admire. Drink up!   http://www.chrisstamey.com/

From the publisher: Popular music was in a creative upheaval in the late 1970s. As the singer-songwriter and producer Chris Stamey remembers, “The old guard had become bloated, cartoonish, and widely co-opted by a search for maximum corporate profits, and we wanted none of it.” In A Spy in the House of Loud, he takes us back to the auteur explosion happening in New York clubs such as the Bowery’s CBGB as Television, Talking Heads, R.E.M., and other innovative bands were rewriting the rules. Just twenty-two years old and newly arrived from North Carolina, Stamey immersed himself in the action, playing a year with Alex Chilton before forming the dB’s and recording the albums Stands for deciBels and Repercussion, which still have an enthusiastic following. A Spy in the House of Loud vividly captures the energy that drove the music scene as arena rock gave way to punk and other new streams of electric music. Stamey tells engrossing backstories about creating in the recording studio, describing both the inspiration and the harmonic decisions behind many of his compositions, as well as providing insights into other people’s music and the process of songwriting. Photos, mixer-channel and track assignment notes, and other inside-the-studio materials illustrate the stories. Revealing another side of the CBGB era, which has been stereotyped as punk rock, safety pins, and provocation, A Spy in the House of Loud portrays a southern artist’s coming-of-age in New York’s frontier abandon as he searches for new ways to break the rules and make some noise. Martin’s interview with Chris Stamey was recorded on August 29, 2018.

This past weekend, the Ulrich Museum opened their newest exhibition Stocked: Contemporary Art from the Grocery Aisles. This exhibition is Dr. Emily Stamey's final show, and she left Wichita with a true gem. For Dr. Stamey, Stocked is a culmination of three years of research-- and several more of personal interest-- in food production, distribution, marketing and consumption. She married this interest with her scholarly background in Pop Art for an exhibition that is accessible, engaging and challenging-- a hard chord to strike.

Practical guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic prostatitis are presented. Chronic prostatitis is classified as chronic bacterial prostatitis (culture-positive) and chronic inflammatory prostatitis (culture-negative). If chronic bacterial prostatitis is suspected, based on relevant symptoms or recurrent UTIs, underlying urological conditions should be excluded by the following tests: rectal examination, midstream urine culture and residual urine. The diagnosis should be confirmed by the Meares and Stamey technique. Antibiotic therapy is recommended for acute exacerbations of chronic prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis and chronic inflammatory prostatitis, if there is clinical, bacteriological or supporting immunological evidence of prostate infection. Unless a patient presents with fever, antibiotic treatment should not be initiated immediately except in cases of acute prostatitis or acute episodes in a patient with chronic bacterial prostatitis. The work-up, with the appropriate investigations should be done first, within a reasonable time period which, preferably, should not be longer than 1 week. During this period, nonspecific treatment, such as appropriate analgesia to relieve symptoms, should be given. The minimum duration of antibiotic treatment should be 2-4 weeks. If there is no improvement in symptoms, treatment should be stopped and reconsidered. However, if there is improvement, it should be continued for at least a further 2-4 weeks to achieve clinical cure and, hopefully, eradication of the causative pathogen. Antibiotic treatment should not be given for 6-8 weeks without an appraisal of its effectiveness. Currently used antibiotics are reviewed. Of these, the fluoroquinolones ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin are recommended because of their favourable antibacterial spectrum and pharmacokinetic profile. A number of clinical trials are recommended and a standard study design is proposed to help resolve some outstanding issues.
