The story of Can continues this week diving into the magical combination of drummer Jaki Liebezeit & bassist / producer Holger Czukay, the origins of Sampling, and the recording of the group's breakthrough experimental record Tago Mago.

Formed in 1968, the German group Can's founding members included Irmin Schmidt and Holger Czukay who had both studied under Karlheinz Stockhausen. Joined by jazz drummer Jaki Liebezeit, guitarist Michael Karoli and Japanese vocalist Damo Suzuki for the group's 'classic' line-up that recorded Tago Mago (1971) and Ege Bamyasi (1972), their fourth album - Future Days - saw them exploring a more ambient, blissed-out sound, in contrast to their previous releases. Matthew Sweet is joined by musicians Jah Wobble and Gwenno, novelist Alan Warner and cultural historian Mererid Puw Davies to take a deep dive into the album and explore the blend of influences that made Can such a unique musical proposition.Producer: Torquil MacLeodAn expanded edition of Jah Wobble's autobiography Dark Luminosity: Memoirs of a Geezer is out on 7th March.

This week we're discussing every album by Can from 1968 to 1973. In addition to helping pioneer krautrock, Can is arguably one of the most influential bands of all time. They've been sampled by countless artists and their style is both unmistakable and timeless. A wild and incredible band that never really got their due. This era of the band covers their stint with their most known vocalist, Damo Suzuki, as well as some of their most beloved albums. Everyone should know this band.Closing track: “She Brings the Rain” from Soundtracks (1970)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexHistory Tom's stuff:New album on BandcampDebut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:Ege Bamyasi (1972) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteDelay 1968 (1968/1981) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Tago Mago (1971) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteDelay 1968 (1968/1981) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Delay 1968 (aka, Prepared to Meet Thy PNOOM) (1968/1981)Monster Movie (1969)Soundtracks (1970)Tago Mago (1971)Ege Bamyasi (1972)Future Days (1973)

Austin and Nick square off again, as they break down the middle of Amnesiac. Nick, once again, starts the episode by stating that the first song sounds like a demo, while Austin tries to convince Nick that this version of "Morning Bell" is better than the one on Kid A. Along the way, the two discuss the legendary Morrissey Night at Sway in Manhattan, before examining how the lyrics of "Knives Out" were inspired by a British TV show. Can's music is part of the DNA of an incredible variety of music - from indie rock, to new wave, to electronica, to ambient, and most points in between. Despite this, Can are not well known outside of music geeks like the Discord and Rhyme crew. They have long been one of Phil's very favorite bands, though, and he's here to talk about perhaps the band's greatest album, 1971's Tago Mago, along with John and Mike. Together, they'll demonstrate that while the voyage into the world of Can can be a somewhat difficult trip, it's a trip very much worth taking.Cohosts: Phil Maddox, Mike DeFabio, John McFerrinComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/092-can-tago-mago-1971Support the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod

Buddies, this is a fun one. Dave and Hank use this week’s episode to do some catching up on our gear (and meatball) worlds. For Hank, this means lots of Craigslisting, which of course leads to lots of Craigslist belly-aching, as well as dissertations on the Silvertone 319 and Scott Baxandale, the Arturia Microbrute SE, Universal Audio, and even some Zildjian and DW drum stuff. The dudes also close it down with a little desert island thought experiment as well as the question - what’s a COVID Hawk? Also discussed: EVH, boxes of boxes, free sounds from the BBC, The Kinks, and Can’s Tago Mago.Shimmer is the chorus pedal of reverb.
We get some first time listeners of this album and they are very very happy. Can might be the most underrated band from the 70's and this album is not merely one of the best Krautrock albums of all time, but is probably one of the best albums ever, period.

Interview with the considerate and charming Nat Malcolm, who is a country girl at heart and has been performing comedy in Melbourne for almost 12 months. Nat was part of a MICF show in 2016 with Angela Green, and is working toward her own show next year. You will often find Nat in one of the many open mic rooms Melbourne has running, including Station 59 in Richmond and Tago Mago in Thornbury*. We discuss: Connecting to other females in comedy, working in male dominated fields, empowerment of women, observational comedy, the role of self-esteem in mental health, “contagion” of mental health issues, growing up with dyslexia, family mental health, depersonalising hurtful comments from others, different types of intelligence, drugs and alcohol use as a teen, having her own liquor-filled bar fridge as a teen, moving out of home and into a “disastrous” share house, Nat’s challenge of living with other women, the simplicity of living with boys, friends with mental health issues, treating people with mental health issues as you would treat anyone else, Nat’s skill with sarcasm, pros and cons of the philosophy of “if you don’t laugh, you cry”, the impact of her grandmother’s death, advice to never live with a couple, Nat’s super powers, her knack of always being right, seeing the good in people, advice that manners are free, texting movie quotes to friends, and Nat’s message to treat people with respect and manners. *I looked up Tago Mago's after recording, go check it out in Thornbury if you can!
The Immortals haven't had a worst episode ever in awhile so we gotta give the fans what they want! Almost all of them go deep into The Asphalt Jungle and even fewer will come out alive. They also are perplexed by the sound of Tago Mago, the size of the potatoes, the backstory of Captain Beefheart, the miracles of Charlotte's Web, and the age of Abe Vigoda. Also stay tuned to see if Austin releases the episode or not! They definitely nailed this. Loran Steinberg's poetry can be observational, personal and is often written as a sort of interior monologue, sometimes dialogue. She has been writing on and off for most her life. Focusing primarily on poetry for the last three years. The fascinating thing that is poetry and the poetry community has kept her interest ever since. She printed off a short zine in 2013 called Stuff I Wrote and has featured at poetry readings in Melbourne and Adelaide, where she grew up. A new zine should be coming out any month now.Her Poem “Moodswings” was published in 2014 in Page17 Issue 11, coming second in the poetry competition and earning exciting actual money. She collects odd facts and long words that are rarely ever useful and is learning to play cello. She loves living in Melbourne, particularly Footscray and was easier to recognise when she still had blue hair.Randall and Smarty are at it again. In fact they've never really stopped being at it. Attempting to arrest your attention with words. Poetry for people to enjoy. It's a concept they believe in with some vigour. Damned for being entertaining seems like a strange concept in a society that is prepared to be entertained by damn near anything. Perhaps if they were sitting in a room with a camera whining that their souffles didn't set the way they hoped or that some faceless minion hadn't restocked their free beer fridge... So they're gonna take their frustrations out on the microphone and stick it where it fits - right in your ear! Their shows have been described as dynamic and hilarious, full of movement and colourful language (swearing). See what the fuss has been about from Perth to Preston and several other places that don't begin with 'P'.
