As part of the BBC “Be Scam Safe” campaign, Rosa Hunt and guests examine the impact the growing scale of scams has on the way we see the world around us. A recent survey by the Good Faith Partnership and the University of Birmingham's Jubilee Centre found that honesty is the most important virtue for all religious groups, yet on a daily basis we are encouraged to be suspicious that the text messages, phone calls or emails we receive could be fraudulent. It's estimated that in the UK ten billion pounds each year are stolen by fraudsters. But what impact does learning to be distrustful have on us? Are people of faith more susceptible to being scammed? Britain is an open economy, and has become more open over recent decades – despite the impact of Brexit and ‘slowbalisation'. But the quantity and type of goods and services we trade isn't the only thing that has shifted. So has what we consume and where we work. All of these shifts affect our exposure to trade, from its day to day flows to occasional sudden shocks. Yet we pay next to no attention to these issues, which are critical to our living standards. How has globalisation changed the country's exposure to the gains, and risks, from trade? Who is most affected, and how much does it matter for their living standards? How does trade affect us as consumers, and as workers? And what might the impact of future trade shocks be? The Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive webinar to debate and answer these questions. Following a presentation of the key highlights from new research on how changing trade patterns have affected our living standards, we will hear from leading experts on what this means for workers, firms and policy makers. The number of reported scams involving QR codes has nearly quadrupled in less than three years according to figures seen by Money Box. The data was revealed by City of London Police and gathered from reports made to Action Fraud. The Charted Institute of Trading Standards is warning those reports are likely to be just the tip of the iceberg. We'll hear the story of one woman who was scammed after using a QR code in a car park. The government's cost of living support payments to help people on low incomes cope with rising bills have not been enough to meet the scale of the problem. The Department for Work and Pensions says the payments have provided a significant financial boost to millions of households and are just one part of the record £94 billion support package - which includes a 10.1% rise to benefits earlier this year and a more than £2 billion Household Support Fund to help with the cost of household essentials.A young disabled man was denied access to a high interest savings account - after his parents, who have a court order to deal with his finances, tried to open the account. Home owners are at risk of losing large amounts of money when selling their properties by using so called quick sale estate agents. That’s a warning from Trading Standards. It’s told Money Box it’s seen dozens of examples of people losing tens of thousands of pounds from the market value of their homes when agents exploit people who are desperate to sell quickly. In the first half of last year private parking firms requested 4.32m driver details from the DVLA so they could issue fines to motorists. This number of demands is 25% up on 2018 which was itself a fifth higher than 2017. We get many emails to moneybox@bbc.co.uk from listeners asking what they should do when they think they have been sent a demand which they believe is unfair. We speak to parking expert John Wilkie to find out. A Money Box investigation has found that councils around the country are charging students Council Tax over the summer holidays when they should be exempt. Last week we heard from a student at Durham University who'd been sent a bill for hundreds of pounds. After the programme we were contacted by students from Oxford, Norwich, Salford, and Chester who had a similar story. Student bodies are now calling on the government to address the issue with local authorities to ensure that students aren’t forced to pay Council Tax. E-cigarettes and vaping liquids are being sold to children online and on the high street, 5 live Investigates has discovered. Trading Standards is investigating after researchers on the programme bought prohibited products online. A 16 year old girl was also able to buy vaping products from one in three shops in Camden, London. The Tobacco and Related Products Regulations of 2016 forbid the sale of e-cigarette nicotine products to under-18's. In this episode I speak with Claire Mitchell - the brutally honest Founder and CEO of Mimi and Mago (formerly Chillipeeps)! I had the pleasure of meeting Claire at an event in Leeds where we were both sharing our entrepreneurial story. What blew me away with Claire's presentation is how openly she spoke about the challenges she'd faced, the amount of time it took to get her product to market, the huge costs involved, and all the other hurdles along the way. Now about 10 years into the journey, Claire has overcome a huge amount to get Mimi and Mago where it is. She recalls the time she sobbed all the way through her first major presentation, missed out on an order for 1million units, and battling with Trading Standards (only later to get them on her side. This podcast goes into all the above and more and is an absolute must listen for anyone looking to start a business in the product sector. In this episode we discuss: Patenting, prototyping, and testing your product Understanding manufacturing Creating your fanbase and marketing from day one Pitching for investment Selling to the 'big boys' The challenges of running a company on your own The power of social media Selling overseas And as always, so much more... The song this week is very educational...it is entitled *Greenfly in my Trusses" and was an idea I came up with back in the day when my mate the late Norman Thomas of Radio City commented that he was on his allotment and was horrified to find greenfly in his trusses....this began a series of incoming comments from the public with hilarious results...so I decided to write a song dedicated to him featuring all the problems you can have in a garden....the song is wonderfully performed by Peregrine Wilt (aka Paul Damian) and tells the story of love lost on a corporation allotment...the words might seem a bit odd but the details are accurate down to the last detail...listen to this and you could become a professional gardner. 2.Are we sick and tired of hearing about Trump and Teresa May or what?!!!...the guy gets hold of her hand to prevent her slipping BECAUSE THERE WAS A SLOPE that's it.....but oh no the media pile in making an issue out of nothing...and we've got demonstrations in the streets because Donald has been invited to meet the Queen...and none of the demonstrators have a clue why they are waving stupid banners around....they even have toddlers waving banners....there is NO hope......do they think her Maj gives a toss one way or the other?....or maybe they all think they might all get an O.B.E.?....who do they think they are - Ant and Dec?....as always the media just make matters worse. 3.The "scientists" have been at it again..."research" has uncovered the fact that primary school children learn more if...wait for it...they wear slippers....so along with their lunch they now bring in their fluffy footwear....it's only in one school at the moment as far as I can gather....so there you are...I wonder what happened to discipline?.... And Kodak must have shedloads of film left over since everyone bought digital cameras....they even made a classic statement to the effect that rolls of film are making a comeback....people are going out and buying FILM of their cameras...because FILM is better quality and "warmer" than digital.....what a load of tripe....as if we are going to buy rolls of film and PAY for it to be developed....nice try Kodak good luck with that one.....mind you the stupid demonstrators will probably fall for it. 4.We have obviously given up with Eurovision....this year the public have been subjected to a selection of songs sung by X Factor also rans.....and it's the viewers vote that counts friends....there was only one song which was almost bearable and needless to say that wasn't the one we voted for....oh dear....if the contest is judged on who can shout the loudest we are in with a chance....the girl is doubled over at one stage bellowing out the song.....I don't know why we bother....obviously someone is making money...probably Simon Cowell.....it's a big Nil Pwa from me. 5."Mothers" are OUT!!....they must now be called "Parents".....as in "expectant PARENT"....this is so the 1% of transgender parents are not offended....there is absolutely nothing I can add to this. It reminds me of the time when I was working for Merseyside County Council and the Trading Standards burst into a chip shop and told the owner he couldn't call his hamburgers hamburgers....as they did not contain ham....they were in fact "savoury rings"....so the guy put a huge notice in his window "OUR HAMBURGERS ARE NOW SAVOURY RINGS"....that's why Liverpool is such a great place.

Don did a show last Saturday with James Burton and Albert Lee. He said Albert loved it and wanted a copy-SO Don arrived for the sound check and said , Hi Albert I'm a huge fan....here's one of MY cds. Apparently it cost 310 grand for the UK Eurovision entry..... Who makes sure our food is safe and how? A report on Britain's food safety net. The Food Standards Agency is reviewing who makes sure our food is safe and how that work is carried out. Currently the UK's 434 local authorities employ 2800 people to police our food. With with austerity measures underway there's now less money to spend on those services and budgets for Environmental Health, Trading Standards and public analysis are coming under pressure. It's resulted in food sampling rates and the number of inspections on businesses coming down. Professor Erik Millstone, an expert on the UK's food safety system, believes this could result in an increase in risk from food borne illness. Already rates of Campylobacter, a bacterial form of food poisoning, are on the rise and so any future safety regime will have that as one of its main priorities. Sheila Dillon interviews Tim Smith, Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency, about the cuts, the FSA's review and if economic pressures could lead to an increase in risk to our health.Producer: Dan Saladino.
Adrian Goldberg asks why Trading Standards is receiving money from a loans company whose customers complain that they have had payments taken from their bank accounts without permission. 5 live Investigates has heard from consumers who say they have had their accounts debited by loans broker SGE Loans, even after refusing a loan deal, and who have since spent months demanding a refund. This programme has also discovered that West Yorkshire Trading Standards, under whose authority the Leeds-based company comes, receives money from SGE Loans in exchange for providing advice to the business. It also admits it has investigated a number of similar complaints about the company and that some consumers believe they have been misled. But West Yorkshire Trading Standards says that taking payment for services from a company does not affect its ability to deal with complaints impartially. The loans broker denies that it has debited money from customer accounts without authorisation and insists that all complaints are resolved within 28 days. Plus, the landlady of a Portsmouth pub, Karen Murphy, speaks exclusively to 5 live Investigates ahead of Tuesday's ruling by the European Court of Justice on whether the EU single market means she should be able to use any European satellite service to screen Premier League football. Sky and ESPN have the broadcast rights to Premier League football in the UK. And we hear from the chief executive of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Jez Moxey, who complains that the screening of 3pm matches by local pubs is hitting Wolves' match ticket sales. If you have a story for the 5 live Investigates team, email goldberg@bbc.co.uk.
