This month on Danforth Dialogues, we are honored to welcome Dr. Regina Benjamin, the 18th United States Surgeon General who served during the Obama administration. A trailblazer in public health and health equity, Dr. Benjamin brings decades of experience and national leadership to the conversation. A native of Alabama, Dr. Benjamin began her medical journey at Morehouse School of Medicine as a member of the second entering class when it was a two-year institution. She went on to earn her medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and later received an MBA from Tulane University. Dr. Benjamin opened a solo practice in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, which she later transformed into a nonprofit rural health clinic that has earned national acclaim for its service to underserved communities. Dr. Benjamin’s contributions to the field extend far beyond her clinical work. She has served on the boards of Morehouse School of Medicine, Florida A&M University, and Tulane University. In 1995, she made history as the first African American woman and the youngest person elected to the American Medical Association’s board of trustees. Her many honors include a MacArthur Genius Fellowship, a papal medal from Pope Benedict XVI, and recognition as one of Reader’s Digest’s 100 most trusted people in America. We are especially proud to have Dr. Benjamin as our 2025 commencement speaker. Tune in to this inspiring conversation with Dr. Regina Benjamin as she reflects on her remarkable journey, groundbreaking achievements, and enduring connection to Morehouse School of Medicine. The office of the United States Surgeon General recently released a report entitled, “Parents Under Pressure: The U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory on the Mental Health and Well-Being of Parents.” In his introduction to the report, Surgeon General Murthy writes these words: “Raising children is sacred work. It should matter to all of us.” Of course, those of us who understand God's design for the family and the role we are to play in the nurture of our children know this to be true. Murthy goes on to write these words: “The work of parenting is essential not only for the health of children but also for the health of society. Additionally, we know that the well-being of parents and caregivers is directly linked to the well-being of their children.” Murthy's words capture the truth of a principle we all must understand: that our role is primary, and that we pass on to our kids who it is that we are. Parents, if you desire your children to be faithful followers of Jesus, you must be that yourself!

Dr. Murthy knows health should be looked at holistically, and he's used his position to spotlight topics you might not think of as health crises, like gun violence, loneliness, and social media. We discuss his values, the harrowing confirmation process when he first became Surgeon General, and how he defines success and fulfillment, no matter what lies ahead. A United States Surgeon General's advisory “is a public statement that calls the American people's attention to an urgent public health issue and provides recommendations for how it should be addressed. Advisories are reserved for significant public health challenges that require the nation's immediate awareness and action.” In the past, you've heard us cite advisories related to issues facing our children and teens. But the most recently released Surgeon General's Advisory calls attention to the current crisis of stress and mental health issues among parents! This new advisory tells us that forty-one percent of parents say that most days they are so stressed they cannot function, and forty-eight percent say that most days their stress is completely overwhelming compared to other adults, and this before the Covid-nineteen pandemic. I want to invite you to listen in all this week as we offer some strategies and suggestions for dialing down on the stress that you may be feeling in your home.

The United States Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, declared this week that gun violence in the US is a public health crisis. Dr. Murthy publicly stated, in a 39-page advisory, that the U.S needs to treat gun violence in the same way we have tackled smoking or car crashes. Deaths caused by guns rose to the highest in three decades in 2021. In 2020, firearm-related injuries became the leading cause of death of children and adolescents aged 1-19. Gun-related deaths for youths were higher than car accidents, cancer, and heart disease. To quote Dr. Murthy,  “I want people to understand the full impact of firearm violence in our country, and I want them to see it as a public health issue. I know it's been polarizing and I know it's been politicized, but if we can see it as a public health issue, we can come together and implement a public health solution.” Also, this week marks two years since since the mass shooting at the July 4th parade in Jeremy's hometown of Highland Park, Illinois that killed seven people, and injured many more. Your Doctor Friends decided it was timely to re-release last year's Independence Day episode. Our expert for this episode is THE INCOMPARABLE Garen Wintemute MD, MPH: Dr. Wintemute is Distinguished Professor of Emergency Medicine and Baker–Teret Chair in Violence Prevention at the University of California, Davis. He is the founding director of the Violence Prevention Research Program there and of the California Firearm Violence Research Center, the nation's first publicly-funded center for research in this field. Trained initially as a biologist at Yale University, Dr. Wintemute attended medical school and residency at UC Davis and studied epidemiology and injury prevention at The Johns Hopkins University. He practices and teaches emergency medicine at UC Davis Medical Center, a Level I trauma center, and is a public health leader in the world of violence prevention Key highlights in this episode include: Background in the history of gun violence in the US. Where are we now? What makes the US unique in its struggle with gun violence? What's the history of legislation re: gun violence (including assault-type weapons) prevention? Are there actually more mass shootings now than in previous years? Does Chicago have more gun violence than other major cities? Why is Chicago so often highlighted? What is the mental health toll that gun violence takes? How is this being addressed? What can people do to make a difference in gun violence prevention? Dr. Wintemute recommends the following resources to learn about gun violence prevention: The "What Can You Do" Initiative via UC Davis Health. “Third place”. The term originated in a 1989 book written by sociologist Ray Oldenberg. It refers to a place separate from Work or Home where humans can facilitate social interaction. The need for Third Places has grown and was extremely exacerbated by the COVID-19 global pandemic. Like many other things, the pandemic accelerated increasing trends: loneliness and obesity.   According to the World Health Organization: “High-quality social connections are essential to our mental and physical health and our well-being.” The United States Surgeon General has labeled loneliness an ‘epidemic'. The British Medical Journal published a report in late 2021 that concluded “problematic levels of loneliness are experienced by a substantial proportion of the population in many countries.”  Also according to the WHO: worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975 and as late as 2016, 1.9 billion adults were overweight, of which 650 million were obese. The good news? Both of these trends are preventable and reversible. Third Places are helping to provide people with the outlet they need to improve their situation and find happiness. There is a Third Place emerging in cities across the world that solves both problems and a lot more: Community Gardens. It could be a rooftop in a densely populated city, or a common area just down the road. Community Gardens provide the benefits of “public relaxation” while also teaching the valuable skill of eating healthy. They also provide a source of STEM education for kids.   How could Microchip Technology help accelerate the growth of Third Places like Community Gardens?   Links from the episode:     Guests:  Ross Satchell  Toby Sinkinson

Peter Groff was at Denver's 2021 MLB All-Star Game & Home Run Derby and tells us why he still loves Nolan Arenado.   Civil rights are voting rights, and there is great discussion of critical race theory, black/Jewish relations, MLK, General Mark Milley's revelations, and Trump connections to Nazis and Hitler.  There's discussion of Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Lauren Boebert.   Peter Groff talks about redistricting and whether Dems gave away the farm. Zaila Avante-garde and Amanda Gorman get rave reviews. Education and opportunity go a long way. Senator Groff reacts to January 6, and Trump's Big Lie. Peter argues for ending filibuster but opposes packing Supreme Court.   These two lawyers give out three great book tips. Groff recommends Kill Switch, Robert E. Lee and Me, and Four Threats. Host touts The Holly, Grant, and Forget the Alamo. Listen to the reasons why.   Dr. Vivek Murthy, United States Surgeon General, wants us to confront misinformation about Covid. Show does this, taking to task the messages of medical misinformation provided by hosts on Denver Trump radio, who are also GOP officials in Colorado.  Find out why pandemic continues.   Troubadour Dave Gunders leads host into duet of Brother John /Iko Iko. This is unforgettable singing by the two good friends, one a professional musician and the other, and enthusiastic off-key lawyer with a distinctive voice. Dr. Joycelyn Elders was the 2nd woman and 1st African American person appointed Surgeon General of the United States. She’s also a sexual health revolutionary. In 1994 President Clinton forced Elders to resign after she advised masturbation be recommended in sex ed programs as an alternative to sex to curtail the spread of HIV. Ken & Sunny talk with Dr. Elders about sexual health, pleasure inclusive sex ed in church, transgender children, the legalization of marijuana, Waffle House vs. Denny's, #MeToo & more. Ken & Sunny also celebrate the second season of Netflix’s Stranger Things with their corny parody, Weirder Occurrences. Guest bio  Dr. M. Joycelyn Elders was the 16th United States Surgeon General. She was the First African American & second woman to ever hold the position. Dr. Elders grew up in rural segregated Arkansas and was the daughter of a sharecropper. After graduating high school she earned a university scholarship and found her calling was in medicine. Elders became a well respected pediatric endocrinologist. This is where her passion for comprehensive sex education took root. Pregnancy was dangerous for teenage girls with diabetes and other illnesses and elders recognized the need to give these young women clear useable information on pregnancy prevention and sexuality education. She taught these young women not be ashamed of their sexual feelings but instead have agency over their own bodies and to approach their own sexuality with intelligence and responsibility.   In 1986 Elders was named Director of the Arkansas Department of Health. She fought with conservative and religious opponents and opened clinics in schools, she made condoms and comprehensive sex education available to children and teens. In 1993 she was appointed surgeon general of the United States under President Bill Clinton. After 15 months she was forced to resign when she made an unforgettable remark to the press. When asked if the spread of AIDS could be reduced through advocating masturbation as an alternative to sexual intercourse, Dr. Elders answered: “I think that is something that is a part of human sexuality and it’s a part of something that perhaps should be taught.” Already controversial for speaking up about comprehensive sex ed, birth control, and supporting the legalization of marijuana, this was too much. President Clinton forced her to resign. Elders went back to medicine and teaching and has since retired. She is still, however, very vocal about the importance of sexuality education. Episode 12 Topics the importance of healthy sexuality, bad endocrinologist jokes, #MeToo, comprehensive sex ed, juvenile diabetes, transgender youth, sex ed in Indiana, Dungeons & Dragons, LGBTQ issues under the Trump administration, consent violations, cake vs. pie, child abuse in the church, sex ed for seniors, HIV/AIDS, German shepherds, child sexual abuse prevention, the power of telling your story, Stranger Things parody, Harvey Weinstein, the spectrum of gender, harmful surgery on intersex children, bathroom bills, marijuana legalization, child abuse in the church Episode 12 LinksSpecial bonus story told by Dr. Elders available to all Patreon followers (even those that don’t contribute-- just hit “follow” on our main Patreon profile page for all our free updates and posts!) https://www.patreon.com/posts/hilarious-bonus-14995929 Episode 12 Sponsor & Giveaway Info Sex Toy Spotlight item of the week: Wonder O Wand (get it, or almost anything else at Castle Megastore for 20% off with Code SUNNY) Angela White Fleshlight Contest: Win an Angela White Fleshlight and a copy of Angela Loves Women 3 which signed by both Angela White and Abella Danger, Contest runs from 10/1-10/15/17.
