How has it taken us this long to cover one of the most influential films in horror history? On our latest episode of Spooky Tuesday, we're throwing it back to one of the very first final girls with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). The film that both introduced Leatherface to the world and invented the power tool as an instrument of psychological damage, this scary '70s story made a lasting impact on both the culture and hitchhiking crime statistics. But there's more to talk about than just that. Despite the torture porn connotations of the franchise at large, the original flick is pretty subtle — and it's absolutely stunning, too. Today we welcome Ted Leo from Chisel. You may know Ted Leo or Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. Or you're wondering what Ted is doing on the podcast. We're deep in our Numero Group 20 Celebration and if you heard the last episode with John Dugan of Chisel, Ted has a great history in hardcore in the NYC area going to shows at ABC No Rio among others and we talk about those days, his thoughts on emo from DC, the early 2000s scene and how special this upcoming "Set You Free" reissue and shows with Numero Group means to him. Ted was an absolute blast to chat with and you'll wonder where the time went as he weaves stories and moments together that at one point says he's never said in any other interview. A true honor to have a DIY legend on the podcast and couldn't have been happier to have it line up with Numero Group's reissue of “Set You Free” and their upcoming shows.
Today on the podcast we welcome John Dugan from Chisel, which we talk extensively about and they're about to do some reunion shows for Numero Group and reissues for some classic 90s that crossed over into many genres. One that I didn't realize happened that I do a podcast about was emo. This band is really close to my heart too. I found this band through John's younger brother Mike. I met Mike my freshman year on campus after someone on our hall said someone down the hall likes weird music too. The first record Mike played for me was Chisel. We became fast friends and ended up seeing Chisel in 1997 with Karate at a house show in Chapel Hill. Little did we know the band would dissolve soon after that show and that would be the end of it. Years later, I've spoken to John through his various musical endeavors or at family functions when I'd see the Dugans in Northern Virginia. Full circle moment and happy to have John on to talk about Chisel and his many musical band over the years. We touch on his experience with Revolution Summer, Amanda MacKaye recommending he buy an album that went on to change history, his time at the City Paper and the opportunities that Brough about and the post-Nirvana boom of labels trying to sign Chisel. We even talk Fall Out Boy and the renewed interest in Chisel.
In this episode, Dan and Lauren discover the genesis of the mentoring relationship between Drs. Susan R. Komives and John P. Dugan. Susan and John share details from their first meeting at the University of Maryland, College Park, and how they continue supporting each other's professional and personal lives. All discuss how serendipity plays a role in connecting with mentors and colleagues and the importance of care and love in building relationships.

John Dugan, the chairman of Citigroup’s board of directors, says the future of banking turns on the industry’s pandemic performance. It will affect how regulators oversee them, how shareholders invest, and how the public feels about banks. The former Comptroller of the Currency doesn’t underestimate the challenges, but he is optimistic that banking will emerge from this crisis with its reputation enhanced.
For this episode, I chat with the very talented John Dugan, the man who portrayed Grandpa Sawyer in the 1974 classic Texas Chainsaw Massacre. We talk about his career, COVID-19, beer, and what it was like working on such a classic film. the interview is so good, we are even interrupted by a bird on his patio that wants its 15 minutes of fame. Enjoy horror hounds!!
John Dugan was born in Brazil, Indiana. He attended the Goodman School of Drama at the Art Institute of Chicago. During his time in Chicago, he performed in several theatrical productions. While he was in Chicago, screenwriter Kim Henkle approached him to portray an old patriarch of a cannibalistic family, and he enthusiastically accepted the offer. He was cast as Grandpa in "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre", a film directed by Tobe Hooper. He was 19 years old at the time of filming, playing the 113-year-old man whose family lured young people to their Texas homestead, where they were killed and eaten. The low-budget film has become a classic in the horror genre, spawning several sequels and a remake. After filming, John returned to theater acting in Chicago, and eventually moved to Los Angeles. He took several years off to focus on his family and raising his daughter. Thankfully to his fans, John’s hiatus ended, and he began filming again. True to his roots he did a cameo appearance in “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation” and reprised his role as Grandpa after 38 years for the film "Texas Chainsaw 3D". He has appeared in several independent horror films, including Monstrosity”, “The Butcher Boys” and in “The Hospital”. He also appeared in the film rendition of Stephen King's The Boogeyman. And almost forty years later, he appeared in the iconic movie “Texas Chainsaw 3D” (2013) as Grandpa Sawyer. John most recently appeared in Rock Paper Scissors, written by Victor Miller, as Uncle Charles, a sinister character who is unforgettable. The film was released on DVD last summer. John currently resides in the Nashville area with his wife. Follow John on TWITTER and FACEBOOK

Late ‘80s Northern Virginia/DC area punk quartet Indian Summer recorded four songs with J. Robbins producing in Baltimore in 1989. Thirty years later, that four song session plus a demo are available on vinyl. Formed by four Virginia teens, Indian Summer was a staple of the Northern Virginia all-ages scene in 1988 and 1989, playing Merrifield Community Hall, Arlington Women’s Hall and many a punk house party, a Positive Force show at d.c. space, and some of the first all-ages matinees at the Safari Club. Taking its inspiration from local heroes like Government Issue, Scream and Ignition, Indian Summer put its own stamp on D.C. area punk with passionate delivery and complex arrangements all its own. One thing John knows how to do is sell. Sure he knows how to buy, how to build relationships and how to get great deals. But he knows where his products will sell before he buys them. So buying a large amount of inventory doesn’t seem so daunting when you have so many channels to sell the inventory on. Experience comes with bumps and bruises, John has had some, but also allows a much more rewarding life. Attack of the Killer Soundtrack - Episode 47 This week we talk with composer Erich Stem about the music he was influenced by, as well as the challenges you face when trying to break into the field as a working film composer. And as we discuss all the fun of alcoholism and early death, we also bring up... horrible MIDI, entering the NBA, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, an eleventh hour process, Alcatraz, musical sentences and sound worlds, Japanese internment camps, young composers, you've gotta MacGuyver this thing, I was always very interested in tearing apart the music that I learned, I would write her the hard parts, my dream as a composer is to do my own thing, a makeshift skateboard, the soprano saxophone part, Joel McNeely, write for orchestras in different cities, you are kind of combining a lot of different things - and putting a new stamp on it, the music being the guide to the film, and you could be crazy, I saw the movie and immediately thought… what a really interesting job, I just would spend hours at the piano writing music, a piece is very much like a film. You have that kind of shape, the early days of the internet, Mason Bates, Bainbridge Island, it could be anything that you wanted it to be, a compiled library of music, feeding me new styles or sounds, poverty inspires creativity, pretty amazing and chilling at the same time, changing my language based on my new exposures, violin duets, hope that you can still do more music, you and your stupid talent, you're basically asked to write these wonderful pieces, that move a lot of people, post-minimalism, John Dugan, using sound, making it into one language and train sets. "I believe that as a composer, and maybe this is true of filmmakers too, you're giving your unique stamp to your art... but you are, in a way, an amalgamation of your experiences. And your reactions to those experiences."
What if there was an educator that taught you how to challenge and deconstruct leadership frameworks or theory over memorizing or accepting them as truth? But what if this same teacher was effortlessly hilariously, authentic, and is what he calls “Unapologetically nerdy/apologetically awkward”? This very leadership scholar, educator, and author is featured on this episode, Dr. John Dugan. We discuss the state of leadership education and how technology, especially social media can enhance the classroom. John also shares his personal digital leadership approach that allows him to amplify other voices and calls for an ethical approach to tools like Twitter.

John Dugan was working in a childrens theater when he got offered the role as Grandpa in “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. He went from entertaining kids to knocking people in the head with sledge hammers in one move. John was a guest at last years Scarefest in Lexington Ky and was kind enough to talk with Monsters From The Basement for a little while. Listen to this awesome interview as we talk about his memories of filming this epic horror classic and much much more.
