Did you know that globally, women only have 75% of the legal rights that men have? And in the U.S., they have none. Gender equality is not just a women's issue—it impacts everyone. I am honored to welcome Mona Sinha to the show today. Mona is the Global Executive Director of Equality Now, an organization dedicated to advancing legal and systemic change to end violence and discrimination against women and girls worldwide. In this episode, Mona and I dive into the importance of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), discussing how its absence from The U.S. Constitution affects domestic violence protections, reproductive freedom, and the overall legal landscape for gender-based violence. We also explore the broader ramifications of not having the ERA in place and how this amendment could uphold equality and justice for all, regardless of gender identity, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation. Tune in to this powerful conversation as we unpack the significance of the ERA and what's at stake for equality in the U.S during this upcoming election season.  Featured topics: Why the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) has not yet been added to The Constitution (5:21) How the ERA could impact the wage gap, reproductive rights, and legal protections (11:51) The connection between the ERA and protections for survivors of domestic violence (14:38) How the ERA could transform family court rulings on gender-based violence (20:39) Common misconceptions about the ERA (24:22) How this upcoming election could influence the future of the ERA (31:58) Learn more about Mona Sinha: S. Jennifer Risher is an author, speaker, philanthropist, and investor on a mission to move money out of the taboo category and help us have much-needed conversations. Her book, “We Need to Talk: A Memoir About Wealth,” explores the impact of wealth on identity and relationships. In sharing her story, Jennifer aims to validate the emotional complexities of money and help those with wealth move out of guilt, shame, or a desire to keep money hidden and into meaning, joy, and purpose. Jennifer was born in Seattle, Washington, grew up in Oregon, and graduated from Connecticut College. She joined Microsoft in 1991 where she worked as a recruiter and then as a product manager. As an extra-fortunate beneficiary of the dot-com boom, she believes abundance can drive change and fuel action — and that we need to be putting more philanthropic dollars to work now. In episode 007 of the Kiln.RoadTrip, created and produced by The Swell Pod, hosts Spencer McKeown and Josh Taylor interview Jackie Zehner, founder of SheMoney, during their Kiln Road Trip. Jacki, a former Goldman Sachs partner and financial feminist, discusses her dedication to aligning women with money and power. She highlights the emotional and traumatic aspects of financial management, especially for women, and emphasizes the importance of storytelling in her work. SheMoney, her platform, offers events and workshops to empower women financially, supported by strategic partnerships and the state of Utah. Jacki Zehner describes herself as a financial feminist. The latest Global Gender Gap Report states that at the current rate of change, it will take over 135 years to reach gender parity, and for Jacki, that's completely unacceptable. As the founder of ShePlace and SheMoney, she is bringing all her decades of experience championing for the advancement of women and girls under these new umbrellas. Jacki learned quite a lot about finance while working at Goldman Sachs, where at the age of 32, she became the youngest woman and first female trader to make partner. After leaving Goldman in 2002, Jacki spent almost a decade absorbing as much as she could about the wealth management industry, before diving into philanthropy full force, serving on many women focused non-profit boards, giving through her family foundation, and co-founding a global philanthropic network called Women Moving Millions whose over 330 members have collectively given over one billion dollars with a gender lens. Jacki is an active investor and champion of gender-lens investing more generally. She began writing about women and money in 2009 on her personal blog and other platforms, and now primarily publishes regular content as an Influencer on LinkedIn where she has a following of over 750,000. Jacki is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions for her work, including being named by The Economist magazine as one of the top 50 Diversity Leaders in Public Life. Today's episode (or 2-part series) is quite heavy - we are going to be talking about sexual harassment in fundraising. There is explicit content and potentially triggering storytelling so I want to make sure you listen to today's show in the right place - mentally, physically, and emotionally.   For this series, I have the incredible honor of interviewing Dr. Ann Olivarius who is recognized around the world for her pioneering work in representing victims of sexual violence, sexual harassment, and discrimination. Her firms in the US and UK have achieved landmark settlements for survivors of abuse and have successfully coordinated international efforts to bring perpetrators to justice.  In this episode, we hear about Ann's coming of age and the background stories that led her to birth the legal case for sexual harassment and coin the term date rape. You will learn about Dr. Olivarius' experience as a philanthropist as a part of Women Moving Millions, and how that experience has led to additional awareness about the different money stories we hold, and how deep they go.  In this conversation, we talk about some of the gender dynamics and historical foundational elements of the funder/fundraiser relationship that make it particularly vulnerable for sexual harassment situations. And we talk about some of the other forms of violence and racism in the sector because, as we know, sexual harassment is not the only form of harassment and abuse. At the same time, we also know that sexual harassment is a huge issue in our sector and one that needs to be talked about in a bigger way.  Dr. Olivarius shares a wide perspective on the issue; she shares some cases she's worked on through her successful career and explains why we urgently need to change fundraising norms in the sector to break the cycle of toxic power dynamics.  Episode Highlights Part 1:  (04:42) - Who is Dr. Ann Olivarius? The sexual abuse and power dynamics during her coming of age and how that led to the work she does today. (08:53) - How the legal basis for sexual harassment came to be what we know today (17:07) - Dr. Olivarius' experience with Women Moving Millions and how it impacts the way she looks at the movement of money and fundraising   (20:23) - Drawing the Line: The importance of holding people accountable for sexual harassment even if other problems arise as a result (22:29) - Money and Control: How theories on money and the movement of money is used to reinforce and protect power  (23:43) - Sexual harassment in philanthropy: the gender dynamics and historical foundational elements of the funder/fundraiser relationship that make it particularly vulnerable for sexual harassment  (27:06) - How do you know when it's sexual harrassment? (27:31) - Changing the dynamic imbalance and how to create fundraising norms that support fundraisers to do their critical work.

An author, speaker and certified life coach, Indrani has delivered keynote addresses at conferences and leads workshops around the world, including World Women's Health and Development Forum at the United Nations, the Nexus Conference in Jamaica, the UBS's “It's a Girl” conference in Switzerland, Global India Fund's Girl Rising Screening and panel in D.C, Women Moving Millions, at the 2016 Women Deliver Conference in Copenhagen. Indrani completed her formal education in New York City, attending Queens College and Kent State University. She is currently preparing to begin a certification in Social Impact Strategy at UPenn and an executive leadership program at THNK in Amsterdam for 2019.  She is also tri-athlete and marathoner in her spare time. During our conversation, Indrani shares how she realised her life mission, what inspired her mission and how she sustains herself along the way. We dive into SO many great things during this episode including a very practical way of saying no, dealing with toxic people, why recovery time is so important and how Indrani reparents herself. This episode is a great reminder of how what people say says more about them, that we need to put ourselves on the top of our list and why selfish is such a fantastic word! Indiani's spirit is absolutely contagious. If you need some courage to deal with toxic people in your life, a permission slip to look after yourself as well as the people around you, and some extra sass in your life, this is the episode for you! "How can we make Philanthropy a Family Affair?" is a question many ask when trying to involve and engage family members in charitable activities. Giving with families is one of the things many people aspire to and often finding challenging. Join Helen LaKelly Hunt and Leah Hunt-Hendrix, a mother-daughter duo, on April 23rd for an intimate conversation about family philanthropy. We'll dive into topics ranging from tips for engaging family members to strategies for working as a team and balancing individual interests that arise in a family setting. As Helen says, "Funding together allows all family members to learn about each other at the deeper soul level. It has become an important and joyful part of all our lives." Helen is the co-founder of several public foundations and nonprofit organizations, including Women Moving Millions, a community of individuals who have made gifts and pledges of one million dollars or more to organizations promoting the advancement and empowerment of women and girls. Swanee her sister helped catalyzed this vision. Helen is also passionate about the Safe Conversations Project, whose goal of interrupting the downward cycle of poverty by strengthening relationships at home. Leah, Helen's Daughter, is an active player in the family's philanthropy as an advisor to the Sister Fund and advisor to other initiatives. She helped start the Solidare Network, a community of people with wealth aligning their resources with movements that promote dignity, justice, and equality. Leah has spent the past decade at the intersection of theory and practice, combining a study of moral philosophy and democratic theory with research around the world in grassroots organizing and social movements. --- Hosted by: Jason Franklin; Featuring Bold Giver: Helen LaKelly Hunt; Participant: Leah Hunt-Hendrix

In my twenties I inherited enough money to live without a paid job. I had grown up in Denver in a culturally Jewish family that emphasized Tikkun Olam, the value of healing the world through economic and social justice. I took these values to heart and prepared for a career in international development and women's empowerment. At the start, my idea of justice was to spend my time helping those with less. After grad school I moved to Kinshasa, Zaire (now DRC) and worked there for four years, launching a career working with governments, the UN and NGOs to assist in developing primary health care delivery systems and infrastructure in Africa. I was also blessed to meet the woman who became my life partner, Gael Murphy. Although I was helping, I began to understand the limits of creating justice through outside aid. Meanwhile, the funds that I had inherited basically gathered dust, partly because I was busy with my work and partly because I was ambivalent about my own wealth and privilege.
