Iqbal Dhaliwal, Global Executive Director of MIT's Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), and Vikrant Bhargava, Founder of Veddis Foundation, join Alberto Lidji to discuss the power of evidence, the ASPIRE partnership and the innovative Emissions Trading Scheme. We also explore how philanthropists should decide what to fund, where and how to fund; why evidence is so important in driving forward policy change; and why policy itself should be a key focus in the philanthropic space.  The ASPIRE partnership (Alliance for Scaling Policy Impact through Research and Evidence) is a coalition of governments, philanthropic organizations, civil society groups, and research institutions.  The Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is a flexible, market-based approach to solving the air pollution problem in India. It works by capping emissions for a particular pollutant, like particulate matter, in a particular area. It allows sources of the pollutant, such as industrial plants, to trade emissions permits among themselves. The capping ensures emissions targets are met while trading allows this to be achieved cheaply. The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) is a global research center working to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. Anchored by a network of more than 900 researchers at universities around the world, J-PAL conducts randomized impact evaluations to answer critical questions in the fight against poverty. J-PAL co-founders Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo, with longtime affiliate Michael Kremer, were awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics for their pioneering approach to alleviating global poverty. Veddis Foundation invests in organisations working at the intersection of technology, policy, and impact. Veddis also partners with governments on policy implementation, effective public service delivery and governance.  Thank you for downloading this episode of the Do One Better Podcast. Steve, it seems that every week we have a couple guests on, and we're always trying to find a way to help viewers and listeners understand taxes. And as you've said so many times, and so well, taxes are a part of our life. As Ben Franklin once said, that and death are unavoidable. But it is unique the way that we find that they do come into our lives. Steve Moskowitz: It really affects every aspect of our lives, because money is so important. It affects, literally, the food you eat, the place you live, how you- Chip Franklin: Stress? Yeah, try not having any of it. Steve Moskowitz: That's when it's a real problem. Chip Franklin: Yeah. Steve Moskowitz: And taxes wants to take a big chunk of that away from you. So the amount you pay is directly going to affect not only your life, but how your family lives as well. Chip Franklin: Well, let's just jump into our first guest. Again, that's Steve Moskowitz. I'm Chip Franklin. This is George Nagle. He's a former global executive director of marketing. His portfolio had a responsibility of over 352 million, and he used a lot of creative innovative ways in a business to drive profit and loss. And we're always interested in profit loss, right? Steve Moskowitz: Absolutely. Chip Franklin: Yeah. Joining us right now is Mr. Nagle. Hi, George. Where are you right now? What part of the world? George Nagle: Hi. So I'm out of Lansing, Michigan, so the state capital here in the wonderful state of Michigan. Chip Franklin: Great state, yeah. Let's talk about this right out of the get-go, and talk a little bit about the idea of profit and loss, and how- Steve Moskowitz: I prefer profit. Chip Franklin: Right, right. Although it's nice to have losses on paper at the end of the year as well. Steve Moskowitz: The sweetest thing in life is a positive cash flow with a tax loss. Now you're talking my language, Chip. Chip Franklin: Let's talk a little bit about ... this goes back decades ... but the idea of positive thinking, and the other one too, thinking outside of the box. When you hear that phrase, I'm kind of curious from both of you ... Let me start with you, George. What does that make you think of when you think of thinking outside the box? What does that mean to you? George Nagle: So to me, that really means that people recognize that they may be a little stagnant and they feel a need for change. And Chip, the funny part about that is when you say that to people, they're like, "Yeah, yeah, we need to change." And then as soon as I say to them, "Great, who's going to change first?" Dead silence. And a lot of that comes down to ... When organizations are usually saying that, what they are lacking isn't necessarily a need for change; it's a need for better execution within the field that they already play in, and then they can bring in some different thinking, some breakthrough thinking, not necessarily thinking outside of their box. Because, Chip and Steve,

On this podcast, we do a deep dive into companies that are crushing it with a great company culture and this show was no different. We matched up two great companies that are doing amazing things in their companies to grow their company cultures. APS and Co: Collective were the star companies on the show. Whether it's a company that has been around for over 100 years like APS or over 11 years like Co: Collective, they understand that growing culture is vital and at the root of continuing to grow a successful company overall. We discuss the importance of growing this culture on the inside, with employees, and on the outside with customers and clients. The culture should be transparent and consistent from all angles. One of the ways Co: Collective does this is by bringing the clients “into the sandbox” to build with them and be part of the process. The journey and the process is key in growing a good culture. The first step in the process is self transformation which can then drive into company growth and transformation. APS does this through growth mindset focus when growing and adapting in new areas. This is a great episode to listen to if you are another “company culture” guru that is loving to learn new ways to grow company culture. You can hear the passion and experience in Kit and Leila's voices, as well as the knowledge that Derek brings from his Cultural Anthropology background. This show discusses the need for company's to set bold goals that they will try and achieve. APS has set the goal to be 100% clean by 2050. This is a goal that they are in the process of aiming towards now. Similar to the goal that Black Rifle Coffee set to hire 10,000 veterans, these are large goals but important to help lead the companies in the direction that is supportive of their company culture. It was great to hear the thoughts, suggestions, examples, and passion from Leila, Kit, and Derek, that it might just be easier to listen and hear for yourself. The discussion was intended to distill the key lessons each woman learned from their respective rise to seniority and their advice for future generations of female leaders. Ep. 87: Sara Eckhouse – Executive Director, FoodShot Global || On episode 87 of Sourcing Matters we welcome the Executive Director of FoodShot Global – Sara Eckhouse. Launched in Fall of 2018, FoodShot Global is an investment platform aimed at accelerating food system transformation through an annual challenge – a call for “Moonshots for Better Food” that will create a healthier, more sustainable, and more equitable food system worldwide. FoodShot is a global consortium of world-class partners, including mission-aligned venture funds, banks, corporations, universities, and foundations. Together FoodShot will award up to $10 million in equity and up to $20 million in debt funding to innovative businesses. As Senior Advisor to Secretary Tom Vilsack at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Sara Eckhouse focused on local and regional food systems, organic agriculture, and healthy food access. Sara launched and managed programs to support sustainable agriculture, and she has firsthand knowledge of the opportunities and challenges of combining sustainability with profitability in food value chains. During our 45 minute discussion we review the goals and objectives of this innovative financing forum. We learn of some of the recipients of funding, and of the Foodshot Groundbreaker award – a prize pool of $500,000 in philanthropic capital awarded to researchers, social entrepreneurs and advocates in the regenerative food space. We hear why Sara decided to take on this role at Foodshot Global after being an Obama Administration political appointee who for five years influenced US product differentiation. Joining as cohost is Jay Vilar – founder, and a practitioner at ‘Nourish’ – a bespoke consulting company with a mission to educate, teach, and train people on the benefits of using food to heal your body and optimize your health.  Located in Boston and Washington, DC – Jay has always been on the forefront of using optimal health techniques, and bio-hacking his nutrition to achieve remarkable results in his career. Tunein to hear what it takes to make food and its production the next moonshot to save the planet.   www.SourcingMatters.show
