The Wannsee Conference was a meeting that took place on January 20, 1942, in a suburb of Berlin called Wannsee. The conference was organized by high-ranking officials of Nazi Germany, and its main purpose was to coordinate the implementation of the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question." The "Final Solution" was the Nazi plan to systematically exterminate the Jewish people in Europe during the Holocaust.During the conference, top Nazi officials, led by SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, discussed and formalized plans for the mass genocide of Jews. The decision to implement the "Final Solution" had already been made earlier, but the conference aimed to coordinate various administrative and logistical aspects of the genocide, such as the organization of transportation, the role of different government agencies, and the cooperation of various occupied territories in carrying out the extermination. The Wannsee Conference marked a pivotal moment in the Holocaust, as it demonstrated the systematic and bureaucratic nature of the genocide. The decisions made during the conference laid the groundwork for the horrific events that unfolded during World War II, resulting in the death of millions of innocent people. In this episode, we take a look at the participants, what they talked about and how it would go on to shape the plan that would inevitably become one of the worst holocausts in human history. If we forget our history, we are bound to repeat it and with the vitriol being launched from many these days, it's a good time to remember just exactly what happened and how systemic and vile it truly was. The sinking of the USS Indianapolis was a tragic and harrowing event that occurred during World War II. In July 1945, after successfully delivering components for the atomic bomb to the Pacific island of Tinian, the USS Indianapolis was struck by two torpedoes from the Japanese submarine I-58. The torpedoes caused massive explosions, leading to the cruiser's rapid sinking in the Philippine Sea.Approximately 900 crew members were cast adrift into shark-infested waters. They faced a brutal struggle for survival, dealing with dehydration, exposure, and relentless shark attacks. The crew's distress signal was delayed, and rescue efforts were slow to reach them. By the time they were rescued, four days after the sinking, only 316 of the USS Indianapolis's crew members had survived.(commercial at 7:02)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5080327/advertisement

Across the Pacific during World War 2, soldiers would tune into Radio Tokyo to hear a seductive female Japanese voice tell them to go home – but who was Tokyo Rose?

The Chris Top Program

I didn't know Evelyn back in 1933 during the height of the depression, but I know she witnessed the Second World War unfold on the radio like most Americans. By the time she was twelve, the whole thing was over, so I doubt she would have paid it much mind if her brothers hadn't enlisted. Days were taken up with chores mostly, but she found time to play like most kids. Her family was poor, but if you asked Evelyn how much money they had, she'd tell you they were rich. She'd probably even tell you to mind your own business if you asked too many questions. The smell of tobacco often penetrated the air in our small community. Sometimes you'd hear a car or two out on the road, but mostly things were placid aside from the sounds of lively animals. Folks conversed with each other and knew when someone was unwell or having a challenging time. People offered to help, but no one ever asked for it. It was a time when all anyone had was one another. No one ever went hungry because that wasn't allowed in Salem. Like any little girl her age, she loved playing with her dolls and inviting friends over for make-believe tea. Evelyn wasn't afraid to get dirty while outrunning the boys through the woods and swinging from grapevines into a creek. She didn't care for The Shadow or Flash Gordon, but she did adore Little Orphan Annie. It's when the radio brought every American together at the same time in their living rooms, and it was special. On occasion, she'd have popcorn using the leftover grease on top of the stove. Evelyn was aware of Glenn Miller and Frank Sinatra, but those weren't her favorites. This little girl was dazzled by Ernest Tubb, Hank Williams, and Eddy Arnold. Those country girl roots were apparent whenever she'd tune in to the Opry on Saturday night and thumb through ragged magazines with pictures of the performers who left her star-struck. It was a sensational escape from many of the hardships of growing up around Bend Road. Most of her clothes were homemade, hand-me-downs, or both. She didn't mind because she didn't know any different. Everyone else did the same thing anyway. Cora, her mother, cut her hair and taught her how to cook and tend to the chickens. No one had it easy, but Evelyn refused to let it crush her spirit. Her struggles only managed to make her stronger by feeding her motivation. Evelyn is full of hope, with countless seasons waiting for her arrival. She daydreams of places to investigate, hearts to break, and the man she will love someday. She fantasizes about a pretty dress and putting on makeup before the dance. Curiosity bubbles inside of her chest while her imagination creates whole worlds inside of her innocent mind. Behind her sweet sapphire eyes rests a warrior ready to challenge life's catastrophes and celebrate in its joy.

Terrence discusses the history of the battle and the diving technology required to dive shipwreck in the 450fsw depth range. We also discuss the genius of a plan to go back to Guadalcanal...... The Naval Battle of Guadalcanal consisted of a series of sea engagements related to the Japanese effort to reinforce their land forces on Guadalcanal. The Japanese under Admiral Yamamoto Isoruku organized a convoy, embarking 7,000 troops. In conjunction with their troop landings, Japanese naval forces were to bombard US Marines in order to destroy U.S. aircraft that posed a threat to the Japanese ship movements. Ultimately, U.S. naval forces prevented the Japanese bombardment and sank most of the enemy troop transports. The only two U.S. Navy flag officers (Rear Admiral Daniel J. Callaghan, Rear Admiral Norman Scott) to be killed in a World War II surface engagement were lost in this battle. Two U.S. light cruisers, four destroyers, and 35 aircraft were lost; three destroyers were damaged. The Japanese lost two battleships, one heavy cruiser, three destroyers, eleven transports, and 64 aircraft. Japan’s defeat also ended the enemy’s final significant attempt to dislodge the Allied forces in the eastern Solomons.

When looking back on the horrors of WWII we often think of the Holocaust, the blitz, atomic bombs and internment camps.  These events fill the pages of our history books and have been ingrained in our collective memory. But would you believe there is another story from this era that is often overlooked and sometimes out right ignored... Between 1931 - 1945 the Empire of Japan would conscript thousands of women into forced sexual labor.  These women came from Japan, Korea, the Philippines and across the Pacific region. Their purpose, to entertain Japanese soldiers and satisfy their "uncontrollable" masculine urges. Once the war ended these women were quickly discarded and forgotten. And the fear of bringing shame on themselves and their families would keep them silent for decades.  It was not until the 1990's that survivors of the Comfort System began coming forward to speak their truth. Today, very few of these former "Comfort Women" are still alive.  But their stories will remain long after they are gone.

Historian Stephen Wertheim traces America’s decision for global military dominance back to World War II in a widely anticipated book published this month. But Wertheim points out that President Trump is as conventional in his quest for military dominance as most other presidents before him. This week, host Mark Hannah sits down with Wertheim to discuss the origins of American military supremacy, the upcoming U.S. presidential election, and what it all means for the future of America’s global role. The Italian Campaign during the Second World War remains a subject of controversy—whether it was “Normandy’s Long Right Flank” or a costly stalemate continues to be debated by historians to modern day. Terry Copp, director emeritus of the Laurier Centre for Military Strategic and Disarmament Studies, believes he has found a new multinational approach to studying the Italian Campaign as he zeroes in on the late 1943/early 1944 Allied assault on the Axis Winter Line. The Winter Line was the site of many famous battles that have since become important national icons, including Ortona, Orsogna, the Rapido River and Monte Cassino. Terry insists to properly comprehend the campaign historians should look passed the national narratives and address the combat operations across the entire peninsula.
