What if the secret to empowering your team and reclaiming your day wasn't about setting more goals, but about leading with intention? Imagine turning your 'hot mess' moments into clear, purpose-driven leadership—this framework will show you how.   1. Self-Reflection: Know Your "Hot Mess" Moments Before you can set meaningful intentions, you need to identify where you are today. Effective leadership begins with self-awareness. Take time to reflect on your strengths, blind spots, and the patterns that hold you back. For instance, imagine a manager overwhelmed by endless meetings and tasks, only to end the day feeling unproductive. This "hot mess" state often stems from unclear priorities, not time management. To help uncover these habits, try the "Mirror, Mirror" improv exercise, where leaders mirror each other's actions to build awareness of how their behaviors impact their teams. Authentic leadership begins with understanding yourself—and research supports this, showing that self-aware leaders build trust and reduce employee turnover. 2. Define Clear and Purposeful Intentions Goals focus on what you want to achieve, but intentions emphasize how you want to show up along the way. Instead of setting a goal to "increase team communication," focus on an intention like "fostering a safe space where everyone feels heard." This shift to intention-driven leadership makes goals more sustainable. Use the "Yes, And" improv exercise to layer intentions onto your leadership goals. For example, if your goal is to improve one-on-one meetings, your intention could be to "build deeper trust during those conversations." Studies from Gallup reveal that leaders with a clear sense of purpose are significantly more effective at engaging their teams. 3. Turn Intentions into Actionable Plans Intentions are only impactful when paired with concrete steps. If your intention is to "lead with empathy," plan to check in with each team member weekly for 15 minutes. The "Obstacle Course" improv exercise is a playful way to practice this, as participants map out their intentions while navigating unexpected challenges. This highlights the importance of creating triggers—such as calendar reminders—to stay consistent. Studies on implementation intentions show that linking actions to specific cues boosts follow-through by 91%. When intentions translate into daily habits, leadership growth becomes inevitable. 4. Maintain Flexibility and Adaptability Leadership rarely goes as planned, so adaptability is key. When unexpected challenges arise—like a project derailing due to budget cuts—a flexible leader adjusts the execution while staying anchored in the original intention. The "New Choice" improv exercise demonstrates how to pivot in real-time while preserving your core purpose. Leaders who model resilience not only solve problems more effectively but also inspire innovation within their teams. Harvard Business Review reports that adaptable leadership leads to 30% higher innovation rates. 5. Reflect and Iterate: Progress, Not Perfection Finally, remember that intentions aren't "set it and forget it." Consistent reflection allows you to refine your approach. For example, a manager who struggles to mentor staff regularly may pivot to bi-weekly group mentoring sessions instead. Celebrate lessons learned with the "Failure Celebration" improv exercise, where leaders share moments of missed intentions, reframing them as growth opportunities. This iterative approach to intention setting boosts long-term leadership efficacy by normalizing progress over perfection, as highlighted by the Center for Creative Leadership. Final Thoughts By applying this five-step framework, you can unlock a new level of mindful leadership that empowers both yourself and your team. Pick one intention to focus on this week, and reflect each evening on how well you honored it. Share your progress on social media or within our improve it! community to inspire others. Intentional leaders create empowered teams—and this year, that leader can be you. Eighth graders flock to Putnam Valley Long provided with two public high school choices - Haldane or James O'Neill - eighth-grade graduates of the Garrison School for the last two years have had three. The latest alternative, Putnam Valley High School, is the top choice for 2024 graduates, according to Carl Albano, Garrison's interim superintendent. He said 13 will attend Putnam Valley in the fall, which enrolled its first Garrison students in September 2023 under an agreement forged in 2022 between the two districts. Meanwhile, six Garrison graduates chose Haldane and one chose O'Neill in Highland Falls, said Albano. Haldane will still have the most Garrison students next year in grades 9-12 with 51, compared to 27 for O'Neill and 17 for Putnam Valley, according to the district. How do Garrison eighth graders choose? Although many parents declined to comment, saying that the decision was a private matter, several parents and students agreed to discuss their choice. Albano emphasized that the key to selecting is to not look at the data or the test scores but to "follow the process." That means attending the information sessions that the schools offer for students and parents. Then, he said, each family should decide "what school is best for your unique child." The three schools have a lot in common. Each ranks among the top 20 percent of high schools in the state, based on test data, graduation rates and other factors compiled by U.S. News & World Report. All offer rigorous academics and a variety of clubs, athletics and art programs. At the same time, there are differences among the schools in size and diversity, according to state data. Haldane is the smallest of the three with 314 students, and the least diverse (81 percent of students are white). O'Neill has 424 students and is 58 percent white, while Putnam Valley has 507 students and is 65 percent white. Putnam Valley Garrison eighth grader Elsa Minkin said she selected Putnam Valley based on several factors, including the school's International Baccalaureate program. The school's IB program "sets us apart," said its principal, Matthew Mello. The IB is a series of rigorous college preparatory courses divided into six subject groups: Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Society, Experimental Sciences, Mathematics and the Arts. Unlike Advanced Placement courses that last a semester or two, IB courses span two years and can lead to an IB diploma. While all Putnam Valley students take IB classes, only 10 percent earn the program's diploma, which requires, among other things, six college-level courses, according to Mello. Vincent DeGregorio, Putnam Valley's IB coordinator, said the program's classes provide "a philosophical shift in how we approach teaching and how we approach learning for students. It's inquiry- and problem-based learning. You're not learning the facts of history; you're learning a method of inquiry." But the IB program was not the only factor for Minkin. Some of her friends attend Putnam Valley and she also liked the school's facilities, including the large theater and the indoor soccer field. Theater is one of her interests, and she observed a dress rehearsal for Putnam Valley's production of Rent. "It surpassed my expectations by a lot," she said. Amelia McCarthy, whose mother, Courtney, serves on the Garrison school board, was one of two Garrison graduates to select Putnam Valley in 2023, the first year that the school was an option. While the IB program impressed the aspiring pediatrician, McCarthy said she was also attracted to the school's Science Research program and hopes to do a project related to pediatric medicine. "Haldane and O'Neill are great," she said. "I just didn't think they fit what I wanted." Haldane "I think the reason I chose Haldane is that I knew people who were going there," said Clara Gelber, a ninth grader at the school, whose father, David, serves on the Garrison school board. "I felt more of a commu...

"Your Self Worth = Your Net Worth" promises to revolutionize your perspective on success and value. Forget everything you thought you knew about financial prosperity and career growth. Today, we have the extraordinary Erin "Big" Diehl to shake up your world. Are you ready to be challenged, inspired, and possibly transformed? Then you're in the right place. In a world where 80% of our thoughts are negative, Erin Diehl, a master of turning failures into fuel, joins us to unveil the secret weapon for professional triumph: the unbreakable bond between self-worth and net worth. Through her unique blend of humor and wisdom, Erin dissects how our internal narratives shape our external realities. Let's break the shackles of self-doubt and unlock the treasure chest of your true potential! Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:  How your net worth follows your self-worth 80% of thoughts are negative New choice technique for changing thoughts Leading energy, not people [01:58] Why Net Worth = Self-Worth Erin explains that your self-worth directly impacts your net worth. When you have positive self-esteem and see your own value and potential, you carry yourself with confidence and purpose. This attracts opportunities and allows you to fully utilize your talents. You're also more likely to take risks and pursue your goals wholeheartedly. On the other hand, if you have low self worth and are plagued by doubts, it shows in your energy and actions. You may hold yourself back from applying for promotions, asking for raises, or taking on new challenges. You're less effective at leading others because you don't truly believe in yourself. This limits your ability to increase your skills, career prospects, and overall net worth over time. [13:27] Finding More Self-Love Erin shares that 80% of our thoughts are negative and offers the "New Choice" technique - clapping and saying a positive affirmation - to help listeners interrupt negative thought patterns and replace them with kinder statements. When a negative thought like "I'm not good enough" enters your mind, you clap your hands loudly and say "New choice!" aloud. This acts as a pattern interrupt for the brain. You then forgive yourself and immediately replace the thought with an affirmative statement such as "I'm doing the best I can." By making new choices around the stories we tell ourselves, we can start to change our internal dialogue for the better.  [17:23] The Power of Words  Erin delves into recent findings that the words we speak aloud physically impact our brain and body. When we say negative words, it triggers stress responses that block logical thinking. However, positive words activate our prefrontal cortex. This is the region responsible for reasoning, problem solving and decision making. It allows us to consider challenges from a place of calm rather than reacting out of fear. By choosing our words wisely, we can physically optimize our brain for success and clarity of thought. Notable quotes: [21:53] We aren't leading people, we are leading energy. And so, we're energy leaders. [22:01] [02:25] Success starts with an internal job. It is up to us to love ourselves first.. Corporate explorers are people who use their experience within a corporation to help launch new ventures. The biggest difference between corporate explorers and entrepreneurs is speed. Entrepreneurs tend to focus on creating a great product and growing it organically, whereas corporate explorers tend to focus on finding a market and scaling rapidly. In this episode, we have guest Andy Binns, Director and Co-Founder of Change Logic, LLC Andy talks about how corporate explorers are individuals who build innovative businesses within corporations. He talks about the rise of corporate explorers as one example of how companies are stepping up their efforts to find, nurture, and deploy new technologies. Corporations already own the ideas, resources, and critical talent to create disruptive innovation. But they need a way to bring these innovations to market quickly and efficiently. He also talks about how corporate explorers are an important part of this process because they can help identify promising technologies that might not be obvious or easy to develop on your own "I look at a Corporate Explorer and I see not only somebody who is driving a new business and new business model and new capability but also incubating a culture." Andy Binns Key Takeaways: When you hire a Corporate Explorer you should expect them to bring new ideas into the company, and help change the culture Corporate explorers are people who use their experience within a corporation to help launch new ventures Creativity is the most important skill in today's workplace and creativity is about originality, innovation, and risk taking Corporate explorers can bring their knowledge of how things work in a big company to the table. They understand what resources are available to them, and can leverage those resources to make a successful business. The role of corporate explorers is evolving as companies look to build more strategic partnerships with startups and other external partners, but it's still critical to have them in place. As we move into a new era of innovation, where technology will play a larger role in driving business growth, these corporate explorers will become even more essential. Corporate explorers are the bridge between your company and the startup ecosystem. They help you understand what's happening on the ground, how startups are using emerging technologies, and how they can be applied to your own products or services Explorers don't just look at things from one perspective. Making a decisionI mentioned in a much earlier episode that I made a later in life pivot.. a few of them actually and so I sort of know what it's like to face change and to step out of the comfort zone. Now for some, change can happen in a number of ways:• It could be voluntary for many reasonso Maybe you want to retire with purpose and you've had this idea in your head for awhileo Maybe you're already retired either from the military or the workforce and you want to try life 2.0 but this time doing something that makes you feel alive• Or maybe this life change you're going through isn't voluntary and you're scrambling a bit to figure some things outo It could be because of a job losso It could be because of a divorceo It could be a number of reasonsEither way, voluntary change or involuntary change, it's still change. And that's something that a lot of people have a hard time with. But if nothing changes, then everything will stay the same right? And it's for that reason alone that you're even thinking about stepping out of the comfort zone. Maybe you're tired of feeling comfortable. And even though you used to think that you'd never really pursue that dream you've had to start your own business, now, with the situation you're facing, it's starting to look like it might not be such a bad idea after all. Am I right? Like I said, I've been through this scenario more than once. But.. you've got a lot of questions. And doubts. And then more questions about the answers to the first questions. I get it. There's a lot to think about. There's a lot to talk about. But at the same time, if you're anything like me, over thinking can also be tying your hands behind your back. So, are you an overthinker? Overplanner? One thing I noticed about overthinking is that it always seem to lean toward the negative. Have you ever noticed that? We don't overthink the positive and wonder about all the things that could go right, do we? We seem to be naturally convinced of the negative and have to have someone, or maybe a few people, who are the ultimate optimist try and break through our negative thinking and persuade us that a good or great outcome is certainly possible as well. In his new book ‘Soundtracks' by Jon Acuff, he describes overthinking this way. “It's one of the most expensive things in the world because it wastes time, creativity, and productivity. It's an epidemic of inaction, a tsunami of stuckness…Over the years, you've built a soundtrack about your career. You have a soundtrack for all your relationships. You have a soundtrack you believe about your hopes, dreams, goals, and every other aspect of your life. If you listen to any thought long enough, it becomes a part of your personal playlist.”Now I'm a big fan of planning and being prepared. But I've also found that that can be an excuse for never actually moving forward to the point of actually doing something meaningful. Of flipping that commitment switch in your head and calling yourself an entrepreneur. Because there IS an entrepreneurial switch you have to at some point, flip. It's there. And yes, it's all about mindset and how we view ourselves and how we view the possibilities of success and how we view our potential. It's thinking about how we think. Because our thoughts control our emotions. Ok.. so, do you want to have a successful business someday? Whether it's something full time or part time? If you want to be successful, then it'll start when you believe you'll be successful. Don't have a pathway yet for your dream, then make a path. You can do it. We were made to dream. I believe in you. How? I already told you. If I can do it, so can you. Do you want to be an entrepreneur someday? Then start calling yourself one now. Start thinking of yourself as one now. You'll need that mindset solidified in your head first, in advance, not later when you think you've arrived at some stage of accomplishment. Are you thinking about being an entrepreneur? Then tell yourself you are one now. Think like one. Act like one. Plan like one. Live like one. Introduce yourself as an entrepreneur. It's not being fake or phony. This is the way it starts the process of how you work through the startup phase of launching your dream. This is what needs to happen to turn that dream into a reality. A commitment. An identity. A new focus on life and how you'll live it. Don't think you have what it takes? I won't believe that. Look, if I can do it, so can you. Now will you make some mistakes? Of course. Everyone does. And sometimes those mistakes will help you to learn what the true path you're supposed to be on really is. Mistakes are just life telling you to not do that again. So then when we learn by the life mistakes or the business mistakes, no matter what they are, we're on the way to a better, more focused path. Now, you can certainly just take all this in and store it away with everything else you've learned about starting your business, but be certain of this. The more you delay, the more money it could be costing you. This isn't a guilt trip I'm pulling on you. This is just me thinking about how much passive income I would have never earned if I didn't start when I did. Now did I start too late? I think so. But I can't change that. I quit my job, spent a year in business with someone else that didn't work out and then went solo in 2002. I started receiving passive income in 2003. Passive income. Products or services that people purchase that automatically renew. Now looking back, if I didn't start my business when I did, I would have never started the process of receiving that passive income. Translation…money lost. Money never earned. Now if I had never flipped that entrepreneurial switch in my head and just kept working that job I hated, many thousands of passive income dollars NEVER EARNED. So learn from my mistakes, yes, but also learn from my successes also, OK? There's a time for planning and waiting and there comes a time to make a commitment. So what's it going to be? Will today be the day you stop letting others decide what your path will be and take control of your dreams? Will today be the day you make the leap to take your life back? Sometimes there's a leap forward and sometimes there's baby steps forward. I see it as a leap in your mindset and then the baby steps for the process you'll need to go through to launch your business. But this message today isn't about process. It's about a choice. What are you going to choose to be today? You're listening to a small business podcast or reading my small business blog for a reason. That shows me that you're half way there and you've got your finger on the switch you need to flip but you're not quite sure about something yet. If you're going to wait until you have all the answers to your questions, then you'll never flip the switch. There's a lot of things you'll just have to learn as you go. And that's ok. That's a normal part of the process. So whatever reasons you have for believing something other than you being successful? Get rid of them. • Think you waited too long and the window of opportunity has passed? Don't believe it. • Not good with technology, so you don't think you can learn what you need? Don't believe it. There's plenty of resources and people that will help you.  • People might think you're crazy so it's holding you back? Don't believe THEM. • You've had a business before and it didn't work out so you're not sure if you can be successful this time? Don't believe it. You're chances of success are even greater now that you made some mistakes and know what not to do. You can do this! Again, if I can do it, so can you. If you need some help along the way, reach out to someone that's been through the process with success. Personal brand business or Podcast launch coaching: www.tomclairmont.com/coachingDo you want to start your own Podcast? The Giant Company aims to build a more engaged and loyal base of omnichannel shoppers with the recent launch of its Choice Pass online membership program. Matt Simon, chief marketing officer at Carlisle, Pa.-based Giant, said Choice Pass makes it easier for Giant Direct and Martin's Direct e-commerce customers to place online orders for pickup or delivery. For a $98 annually or $12.95 monthly, subscribers can order as often as they like and never pay a fee for each delivery or pickup transaction. “Subscription is so important,” Simon said in an SN Off the Shelf podcast. “We had Peadpod Pass — “PodPass” — in the past. The Giant Company aims to build a more engaged and loyal base of omnichannel shoppers with the recent launch of its Choice Pass online membership program. Matt Simon, chief marketing officer at Carlisle, Pa.-based Giant, said Choice Pass makes it easier for Giant Direct and Martin’s Direct e-commerce customers to place online orders for pickup or delivery. That was kind of our entry into it. But with the fast growth in e-commerce in 2020, which is one of the critical priorities for our company, subscription has been such a big thing we’re looking forward to, and how to take advantage of opportunities to drive engagement and more loyalty.” About a third of the Giant/Martin’s customer base are digital shoppers, and over 90% of the retailer’s market areas have access to its online grocery pickup and delivery services, according to Simon. Holly interviews longtime friend, Theresa Rose, VP of thought leadership with C-Suite Network. She started as a contributor there and in 2019 they offered her a position with the company. Theresa Rose official bio states that she is a nationally-acclaimed motivational speaker, award-winning author, high performance coach, and standup comedian. Her latest book, Mindful Performance: How to Powerfully Impact Profitability, Productivity, and Purpose, is a practical how-to book on mindfulness that helps readers become more present and powerful at work, at home, and all day long. Theresa’s soul bio states: I am a...Mindfulness "Expert". Energizer Bunny*. Standup Comedian. Productivity Nerd. Content Crystallizer. Award-winning Writer. Fearless Dancer. Questions they explore are: ·     What are some of the practices that you lean on? ·     What do you tell people how to get past the “woo woo”? ·     How you are navigating the “Fear Wave”? Theresa’s book, Mindful Performance, guides readers with solid, everyday practices to follow to become more mindful in day to day actions. ·     "Start with the breath” is her go to strategy. ·     “Outcome Energization” – see in your mind what you want to come to fruition. Create the day you want in your head in the morning to set the tone of the day. ·     “Gratitude Rant” – Theresa is not a journaler so she speaks her gratitude aloud to get herself back to a place of higher vibration. ·     “New Choice” – when you find yourself less than optimal, what is the new choice you can make? ·     “Emotional Audit” – Looking at the facts of the current scenario, recognizing what’s happening, and uplevel it by a little bit. Constantly bring yourself back to awareness. For those who shy away from “woo woo,” Theresa suggests to Google “mindfulness” and look for the leaders, high end athletes, military members, education and entertainment to find those who are using highly effective focus tools that will help you make more money! Take one step back as the observer when the fear wave hits. It’s important to be able to just see what’s happening and tap into a self care tool kit, whatever that entails (essential oil, going for a walk, etc.) Lean into each other in times of stress, take a look at each other and see our humanity and empathy. Do anything that reminds us of our unity. Try to laugh! We are all navigating awkward. When you don’t know what to say – say, “I don’t know what to say right not but I hear you and I’m here for you.” We’ve been offered the tools to get through life and now we are in the lab. We get to decide how we’re going to do it. Shower your brilliance out into the world! Take a breath, speak some gratitude, visualize as you move forward.     I also want to thank Dave Jackson for teaching me how to Podcast and my classmates at the School of Podcasting for their support and advice.    When I first realized I needed to take an improv class, I was on a lunch break from the VOcation Conference in New York City.  It was a beautiful September afternoon in 2019.  I was chowing on some BBQ and hanging out on a bench in Riverside Park with dozens of other voice actors.   Keith Norton and Jen Olaya, in particular, recommended I take an improv class.  They told me it would help me become a better voice actor.  My brain didn’t make the connection between improv and voiceover at first.  I didn’t have my “aha" moment until this month (March 2020).     Everything I knew about Improv, I learned about 20 years ago from a TV show called Whose Line is it Anyway.    Throughout the VOcation NYC conference, other presenters and students mentioned improv.  When I got back to Ohio and continued audiobook narration lessons at the end of September, my teacher, Sean Pratt, also suggested I get improv training.  I found an Improv Class at Glass City Improv in Toledo, OH.  I signed up for Level One Improv Class.  That’s the “beginner” class.   Improv Class started Monday, January 25, and was taught by Erin Kanary and Jeremy Natter.  Classes were 2 and a half hours long every Monday for 8 weeks.  Our last class was Monday, March 9.  We were supposed to have a show on Friday the 13th of March, but it was cancelled due Ohio’s new social-distancing requirements.     Improv class taught me to say, “Yes, and…”  After all, that’s the mantra of improv!  “Yes, and…”   In the process of learning, I had a ton of fun.  I didn’t know what to expect, but I must say that each class was like a grown-up birthday party full of games.  It was so fun, and I laughed so much, that my face hurt from laughing and smiling after every class.  The class had great chemistry.  Not only did we have fun in class, but we also bonded after class over drinks and conversation at a local bar called “The Attic.”  It was great.  We had a blast.     Apart from becoming a better improvisor in class, over the 8-week class, my narration skills, timing, and delivery all improved.  I became more spontaneous, and I felt like I could make different choices with the material I was narrating.  I think improv class helped me make the most out of my medical narration demo on March 11, too.  Mission accomplished!  Improv helped me become a better narrator.  I had my “aha” moment after 8 weeks of improv class.   One of my improv classmates and I have special voices for our pets.  Spoiler alert!  I just watched Frozen II, and the character Christoff talks for his reindeer “Sven” too!    My theory is that more improv classes can help.  There are at least three levels of improv classes at Glass City Improv.  So, I plan to sign up for Level Two next time it is offered.  I already miss laughing and playing games!   Favorite warm-ups:  10-second story, Zip-Zap-Zop, Da-Do-Da-Do, and object work exercises.   Favorite games:  “Gone in 60 seconds,” “Google Translate,” “New Choice,” “Advice Panel,” and “Freeze.”   I had a blast in Level One Improv Class, and it has made me a better narrator.   Do you love a story with a happy ending?  Then, you will like my medical narration demo story!   In October 2017, I visited Level 2 Audio, the nearest recording studio to my home.  The owner, Mark, kindly offered to meet with me for about an hour to show me his studio and talk with me about my idea to narrate pharmacy continuing education journals into audiobook format.     Refer to Episode Two of this podcast.  Mark is the one who got me started on my Voiceover Journey two and a half years ago.  After we met, he gave me the name of a coach (Nancy Wolfson) and some information to consider.  The rest is history.     Without Mark’s knowledge, I spent almost two and a half years figuring out what to do with my original idea and ultimately learning the business of voiceover and training to be a voice actor who specializes in medical narration and e-learning.  Mark and I had not spoken since October 2017.   Between fall 2017 and March 2020, I worked with David Rosenthal, among other coaches.  The first time David and I ever spoke, I didn’t know how much work I needed to become proficient at medical narration.  After reading scripts with him in a private lesson, he knew what I needed to do.  For starters, I needed to take a 3-part group medical narration class.  During the group class, I improved dramatically.  After a year of various voiceover training classes, including private coaching with David, I was finally ready to record my demo!  Everything I did over the past two and a half years helped - from improv class, to audiobook narration class to support and input from my accountability buddies.   This is all going to seem very serendipitous, but in a round-about way, Mark kicked off my voiceover career, and I am very pleased to say that he recorded my medical narration demo in his studio on March 11, 2020.  The demo is in post-production through David Rosenthal right now, and I hope to have it by the end of the March 2020.     As a surprise bonus, Mark offered to include my demo on the “samples” page of Level 2 Audio’s website, which features professional voice talents the studio recommends.  I am flattered, and I’m looking forward to sharing the demo with Level 2 Audio soon.    Something in my life came full-circle on March 11, and it felt good!!     As I have been working my way through audiobook narration classes with Sean Pratt, I have been recording and uploading my demos to ACX.com, which is a matchmaking site that connects authors and narrators who want to record audiobooks to sell on Audible, which is Amazon’s audiobook seller.  My goal is six demos on the site, and I have 3 now.  Half way there!     The last milestone I want to share is that I joined a Toastmasters Club in January 2020.  After 3 months of being a guest, I finally joined.  I love my club!  Toastmasters is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs.  My club is called Westgate Toastmasters Club 3159, and we meet in Toledo, OH.     Why would I want to join, and why is this a mile stone?  I wanted to join to become a more confident speaker, communicator, and leader.  It’s a milestone because I’m at the beginning of a journey to gaining even more skills that will help me in my voiceover career and in life.  A journey begins with a single step!   October 18, 2019, was my first meeting.  The Table Topics Master was Joe, and the theme was “celebrating grandparents.”    I didn’t know anything about Toastmasters meetings, and I got called to the front of the room to share a 1-2 minute story about my grandparents.  I told a story about the small town where I was raised and the Grandma who wrote me many letters when I left for college, got married, and started a family.  I saved her letters, and when she was on her deathbed, I read the letters to her.  She had Alzheimer’s Disease.  Her memory had faded, but on her last day, I sensed she knew who I was and enjoyed hearing me read those letters to her.     Little did I know that the “table topics” part of the meeting was a contest, and I won The Best Table Topics ribbon for my story.  That meant more to me than I can say.    I need to give credit where credit is due though.  I had just read the book Storyworthy by Matthew Dicks the week before my first Toastmasters meeting.  I used what he taught me about storytelling to win the ribbon.  (The secret is out!)   I was so excited about winning the ribbon at Toastmasters that I Tweeted about it.  I’m not a big Twitter user, but I saw an opportunity to thank the author for the lessons I learned and give Mike, who invited me in the first place, a shout out.  I’m glad I put the message out there.  The author of Storyworthy - Matthew Dicks - congratulated me in return!     At each Toastmasters meeting, I learn even more lessons about storytelling and speech craft by hearing members speak.  I’m excited to be a new member, learn, and grow.

We’re back for Season 3.  I’ll tell you how my non-auditions went, a little bit about our 4 new players and how we’re diving into Short Form as a way to learn more about Long Form. We learned how to “sell it” by playing New Choice, Pillars, Hesitation and Sentence Fragments. All of these games require the players to sell and justify an idea that isn’t theirs.  That’s what makes it funny for the audience and fun for the players!  So then we lean into that philosophy in a Long Form set. Take your scene partner’s ideas and sell them and justify them!  We also did 185 where the suggestion was “blah blah blah.” Too many teams have internal competition – it really damages the community of improv. 185 with “blah blah blah” is a great demonstration for how support can bring the entire show to the next level!

And in this episode, we are going to discuss what a charter school is, how it differentiates itself between a conventional public school, and what San Marcos citizens can expect from CLEAR when it opens its doors in 2020. On Monday, Nov. 5, the duo will host CLEAR's community forum here in San Marcos and are inviting members of the community to come and learn more about CLEAR. You can stop by and say hi at the Old Fish Hatchery Community Building at 6 p.m. Music By Lee Rosevere
