Gutenburg shipped the first working printing press around 1450 and typeface was born. Before then most books were hand written, often in blackletter calligraphy. And they were expensive.    The next few decades saw Nicolas Jensen develop the Roman typeface, Aldus Manutius and Francesco Griffo create the first italic typeface. This represented a period where people were experimenting with making type that would save space. The 1700s saw the start of a focus on readability. William Caslon created the Old Style typeface in 1734. John Baskerville developed Transitional typefaces in 1757. And Firmin Didot and Giambattista Bodoni created two typefaces that would become the modern family of Serif. Then slab Serif, which we now call Antique, came in 1815 ushering in an era of experimenting with using type for larger formats, suitable for advertisements in various printed materials. These were necessary as more presses were printing more books and made possible by new levels of precision in the metal-casting. People started experimenting with various forms of typewriters in the mid-1860s and by the 1920s we got Frederic Goudy, the first real full-time type designer. Before him, it was part of a job. After him, it was a job. And we still use some of the typefaces he crafted, like Copperplate Gothic. And we saw an explosion of new fonts like Times New Roman in 1931. At the time, most typewriters used typefaces on the end of a metal shaft. Hit a kit, the shaft hammers onto a strip of ink and leaves a letter on the page. Kerning, or the space between characters, and letter placement were often there to reduce the chance that those metal hammers jammed. And replacing a font would have meant replacing tons of precision parts. Then came the IBM Selectric typewriter in 1961. Here we saw precision parts that put all those letters on a ball. Hit a key, the ball rotates and presses the ink onto the paper. And the ball could be replaced. A single document could now have multiple fonts without a ton of work. Xerox exploded that same year with the Xerox 914, one of the most successful products of all time. Now, we could type amazing documents with multiple fonts in the same document quickly - and photocopy them. And some of the numbers on those fancy documents were being spat out by those fancy computers, with their tubes. But as computers became transistorized heading into the 60s, it was only a matter of time before we put fonts on computer screens. Here, we initially used bitmaps to render letters onto a screen. By bitmap we mean that a series, or an array of pixels on a screen is a map of bits and where each should be displayed on a screen. We used to call these raster fonts, but the drawback was that to make characters bigger, we needed a whole new map of bits. To go to a bigger screen, we probably needed a whole new map of bits. As people thought about things like bold, underline, italics, guess what - also a new file. But through the 50s, transistor counts weren't nearly high enough to do something different than bitmaps as they rendered very quickly and you know, displays weren't very high quality so who could tell the difference anyways.  Whirlwind was the first computer to project real-time graphics on the screen and the characters were simple blocky letters. But as the resolution of screens and the speed of interactivity increased, so did what was possible with drawing glyphs on screens.  Rudolf Hell was a German, experimenting with using cathode ray tubes to project a CRT image onto paper that was photosensitive and thus print using CRT. He designed a simple font called Digital Grotesk, in 1968. It looked good on the CRT and the paper. And so that font would not only be used to digitize typesetting, loosely based on Neuzeit Book. And we quickly realized bitmaps weren't efficient to draw fonts to screen and by 1974 moved to outline, or vector, fonts. Here a Bézier curve was drawn onto the screen using an algorithm that created the character, or glyph using an outline and then filling in the space between. These took up less memory and so drew on the screen faster. Those could be defined in an operating system, and were used not only to draw characters but also by some game designers to draw entire screens of information by defining a character as a block and so taking up less memory to do graphics.  These were scalable and by 1979 another German, Peter Karow, used spline algorithms wrote Ikarus, software that allowed a person to draw a shape on a screen and rasterize that. Now we could graphically create fonts that were scalable.  In the meantime, the team at Xerox PARC had been experimenting with different ways to send pages of content to the first laser printers. Bob Sproull and Bill Newman created the Press format for the Star. But this wasn't incredibly flexible like what Karow would create. John Gaffney who was working with Ivan Sutherland at Evans & Sutherland, had been working with John Warnock on an interpreter that could pull information from a database of graphics. When he went to Xerox, he teamed up with Martin Newell to create J&M, which harnessed the latest chips to process graphics and character type onto printers. As it progressed, they renamed it to Interpress. Chuck Geschke started the Imaging Sciences Laboratory at Xerox PARC and eventually left Xerox with Warnock to start a company called Adobe in Warnock's garage, which they named after a creek behind his house. Bill Paxton had worked on “The Mother of All Demos” with Doug Engelbart at Stanford, where he got his PhD and then moved to Xerox PARC. There he worked on bitmap displays, laser printers, and GUIs - and so he joined Adobe as a co-founder in 1983 and worked on the font algorithms and helped ship a page description language, along with Chuck Geschke, Doug Brotz, and Ed Taft.  Steve Jobs tried to buy Adobe in 1982 for $5 million. But instead they sold him just shy of 20% of the company and got a five-year license for PostScript. This allowed them to focus on making the PostScript language more extensible, and creating the Type 1 fonts. These had 2 parts. One that was a set of bit maps And another that was a font file that could be used to send the font to a device.  We see this time and time again. The simpler an interface and the more down-market the science gets, the faster we see innovative industries come out of the work done. There were lots of fonts by now. The original 1984 Mac saw Susan Kare work with Jobs and others to ship a bunch of fonts named after cities like Chicago and San Francisco. She would design the fonts on paper and then conjure up the hex (that's hexadecimal) for graphics and fonts. She would then manually type the hexadecimal notation for each letter of each font.  Previously, custom fonts were reserved for high end marketing and industrial designers. Apple considered licensing existing fonts but decided to go their own route. She painstakingly created new fonts and gave them the names of towns along train stops around Philadelphia where she grew up. Steve Jobs went for the city approach but insisted they be cool cities. And so the Chicago, Monaco, New York, Cairo, Toronto, Venice, Geneva, and Los Angeles fonts were born - with her personally developing Geneva, Chicago, and Cairo. And she did it in 9 x 7.  I can still remember the magic of sitting down at a computer with a graphical interface for the first time. I remember opening MacPaint and changing between the fonts, marveling at the typefaces. I'd certainly seen different fonts in books. But never had I made a document and been able to set my own typeface! Not only that they could be in italics, outline, and bold. Those were all her. And she inspired a whole generation of innovation. Here, we see a clean line from Ivan Sutherland and the pioneering work done at MIT to the University of Utah to Stanford through the oNLine System (or NLS) to Xerox PARC and then to Apple. But with the rise of Windows and other graphical operating systems. As Apple's 5 year license for PostScript came and went they started developing their own font standard as a competitor to Adobe, which they called TrueType. Here we saw Times Roman, Courier, and symbols that could replace the PostScript fonts and updating to Geneva, Monaco, and others. They may not have gotten along with Microsoft, but they licensed TrueType to them nonetheless to make sure it was more widely adopted. And in exchange they got a license for TrueImage, which was a page description language that was compatible with PostScript. Given how high resolution screens had gotten it was time for the birth of anti-aliasing. He we could clean up the blocky “jaggies” as the gamers call them. Vertical and horizontal lines in the 8-bit era looked fine but distorted at higher resolutions and so spatial anti-aliasing and then post-processing anti-aliasing was born. By the 90s, Adobe was looking for the answer to TrueImage. So 1993 brought us PDF, now an international standard in ISO 32000-1:2008. But PDF Reader and other tools were good to Adobe for many years, along with Illustrator and then Photoshop and then the other products in the Adobe portfolio. By this time, even though Steve Jobs was gone, Apple was hard at work on new font technology that resulted in Apple Advanced Typography, or AAT. AAT gave us ligature control, better kerning and the ability to write characters on different axes.  But even though Jobs was gone, negotiations between Apple and Microsoft broke down to license AAT to Microsoft. They were bitter competitors and Windows 95 wasn't even out yet. So Microsoft started work on OpenType, their own font standardized language in 1994 and Adobe joined the project to ship the next generation in 1997. And that would evolve into an open standard by the mid-2000s. And once an open standard, sometimes the de facto standard as opposed to those that need to be licensed. By then the web had become a thing. Early browsers and the wars between them to increment features meant developers had to build and test on potentially 4 or 5 different computers and often be frustrated by the results. So the WC3 began standardizing how a lot of elements worked  in Extensible Markup Language, or XML. Images, layouts, colors, even fonts. SVGs are XML-based vector image. In other words the browser interprets a language that displays the image. That became a way to render Web Open Format or WOFF 1 was published in 2009 with contributions by Dutch educator Erik van Blokland, Jonathan Kew, and Tal Leming. This built on the CSS font styling rules that had shipped in Internet Explorer 4 and would slowly be added to every browser shipped, including Firefox since 3.6, Chrome since 6.0, Internet Explorer since 9, and Apple's Safari since 5.1. Then WOFF 2 added Brotli compression to get sizes down and render faster. WOFF has been a part of the W3C open web standard since 2011.  Out of Apple's TrueType came TrueType GX, which added variable fonts. Here, a single font file could contain a number or range of variants to the initial font. So a family of fonts could be in a single file. OpenType added variable fonts in 2016, with Apple, Microsoft, and Google all announcing support. And of course the company that had been there since the beginning, Adobe, jumped on board as well. Fewer font files, faster page loads.  So here we've looked at the progression of fonts from the printing press, becoming more efficient to conserve paper, through the advent of the electronic typewriter to the early bitmap fonts for screens to the vectorization led by Adobe into the Mac then Windows. We also see rethinking the font entirely so multiple scripts and character sets and axes can be represented and rendered efficiently.  I am now converting all my user names into pig Latin for maximum security. Luckily those are character sets that are pretty widely supported. The ability to add color to pig Latin means that OpenType-SVG will allow me add spiffy color to my glyphs. It makes us wonder what's next for fonts. Maybe being able to design our own, or more to the point, customize those developed by others to make them our own. We didn't touch on emoji yet. But we'll just have to save the evolution of character sets and emoji for another day. In the meantime, let's think on the fact that fonts are such a big deal because Steve Jobs took a caligraphy class from a Trappist monk named Robert Palladino while enrolled at Reed College. Today we can painstakingly choose just the right font with just the right meaning because Palladino left the monastic life to marry and have a son. He taught jobs about serif and san serif and kerning and the art of typography.  That style and attention to detail was one aspect of the original Mac that taught the world that computers could have style and grace as well. It's not hard to imagine if entire computers still only supported one font or even one font per document. Palladino never owned or used a computer though. His influence can be felt through the influence his pupil Jobs had. And it's actually amazing how many people who had such dramatic impacts on computing never really used one. Because so many smaller evolutions came after them. What evolutions do we see on the horizon today? And how many who put a snippet of code on a service like GitHub may never know the impact they have on so many?

“Find the Universal.” When Mrs. Gallagher and I chatted about this “mantra” of hers it deeply moved me. Honestly, I have thought about it all week. As our ELL teacher (English Language Learner) she works daily with students from all over the world. In the three buildings that make up Tallmadge City Schools there are over 9 languages other than English being spoken. These are the young people that Mrs. Gallagher works with on a daily basis helping them learn and adjust to the daily demands of being a student in America. Her journey into education, and especially her journey to becoming an EL teacher is fascinating. What she does now wasn't her first, second, or even third career. Her journey through life encompasses time as a mother, grandmother, artist, college professor, poet, editor, author, and so much more. She describes herself as being curious and creative, both attributes modeled by her mother. Her writings, teaching, and stories certainly give evidence to these characteristics. Below you will find links to much of her work. She has a gift with words and a passion for poetry and art. She is also extremely passionate for her students. She combines her passion for both words and her students in her class and she teaches her students to describe to the world who they are and and to share their personal stories. I had the pleasure of sitting in on a recent professional development session where she and 6 of her Nepalis students enlightened our educators with strategies and stories of life as an international student at TCS. Their stories moved me. Much like our guest on episode 48, Serif Krkic, many of these young women were placed in the classroom without understanding English. One young lady, her poem linked below, shared with spoken and written word how she came over as a refugee, like Serif. Her poem is inspiring. Please listen to it, as she reads it in her own voice: Finding Myself By the time our conversation ended, as you will hear, Ms. Gallagher made it clear that she is passionate about her stories, her family, her art, and especially her students. She demonstrates and lives out the very same characteristics her students have taught her… Adaptability. Hospitality. Resiliency. Most of all, the ability to “find the universal” in all people. I walked away from this interview better. I walked away wanting to find the universal and make others feel wanted, seen, and heard. This episode of #Between2BlueDevils features Tallmadge resident/business owner, and THS assistant soccer coach Dr. Serif Krkic. To most of us he is known as Dr. K. Dr. K's story is an amazing story. He begins sharing what it was like to grow up in Bosnia during the Bosnian War. You have got to listen to what it was like moving to the United States in 2001...without knowing how to speak English! In 2008 Dr. K graduated from Firestone High School. After high school he decided to stay local and become a Zip! Dr. K graduated from The University of Akron and then decided he wanted to become a chiropractor...a profession he calls an "accidental profession." Once he made the decision he set off to go to school in Illinois called the National University of Health Sciences. Serif (pronounces Sheriff) loves to snowboard, coach soccer, train and mentor young athletes, and serve the city he lives in...Tallmadge, Ohio. He is a proud member of the Tallmadge Rotary and Tallmadge Chamber of Commerce. As you listen to Serif passionately share about his role in these two community groups you will hear him talk about Operation Christmas Child. The story of the role this organization played in his life as a child and the role it now plays in his adult life is truly inspiring. I left this interview feeling so uplifted and inspired. Ironically after ending the interview and cleaning up my equipment I went down to the weight room to get my work out in. There was Dr. K with 6 young men who came in to work out with him on a Saturday morning. Staying true to his calling he was giving of his time to help our students become better versions of themselves. Truly an inspiration...Dr. K is one of a kind. The Second Phase Podcast - Personal Branding & Brand Marketing and Life Strategies for Success for Female Entrepreneurs

Your brand identity consists of the assets like your color palette, typography, logo, and website that help you become recognizable and memorable and also help you attract your soulmate clients. What are the critical things to consider when designing your brand identity assets? One exercise you can use for creating your brand identity is to create a Pinterest board that includes colors, photos, and fonts that resonate with you. Select colors, fonts, and images that reflect the feeling you want for your brand and business. This exercise tells so much intuitively about the person behind the business. However, there are things that need to be done before creating the Pinterest board. There are three critical factors to consider. Ideal clients You may like certain colors, but will that color palette attract the type of clients you want to work with. Have a complete understanding of your ideal client and their wants and needs. Goals What are your goals? What are your goals for the current year, next year, and in 5 years? This helps understand your business and know what you will be launching in the short and long term. Design helps launch goals be successful. Time to evolve your brand If what you've been doing, be flexible to rebrand, pivot, or take your design in a new direction. Next, create the Pinterest board with images that truly reflect who you are, as well as who your soulmate client is. Be sure that they are compatible. Once the Pinterest board is created, Elizabeth looks at the board and applies intuition and strategy to determine what will be best for the client. She also researches everything she can find online and truly gets to know the person to understand them before making final decisions. Art theory is also tied in at this phase. It is a matter of combining technical knowledge with intuition and strategy when designing brand assets. Color psychology is important for connecting with your soulmate client The feelings that come out of brand asset color schemes can really influence how people respond to and feel about a brand. Color psychology will influence whether people reach out to you to work with you or not. Some people are attracted to neutral and calm tones. Other people are attracted to pinks and beach vibes. You will attract very different clients if neutral, black and white, and minimalist neutral tones versus a beachy or sunset feeling. Neutral palettes give you space to think. What type of people are attracted to different color palettes? Corporate decision-makers tend to be more attracted to neutral palettes. Pink, even with black and white, will attract women. Red attracts strong, high-achieving people. Using typography to connect with your soulmate clients The biggest mistake people make with typography is using too many different types of fonts. Inconsistency with fonts is also a problem. Serif fonts, like Times New Roman, have a much more traditional feel. This may not feel right if you are a more edgy, forward-focused, or modern brand. If you are a more fun more relatable brand, think about a font that is softer, more rounded, not with a hard straight edge. Script fonts are sometimes overused and must be readable. A hand-written script font is more elegant. The key is to be consistent from your website to your social media accounts to be more recognizable and memorable. A great way to discover fonts and search font pairings. You will be able to see what looks good together and use them consistently. Tips for logo design Having a logo is not as important as one might think. People tend to get hung up on having a logo before having an offer to base their business on. A log is important for recognizability but it is not imperative for attracting clients. If you are an entrepreneur or coach, you should have your headshot as a profile photo, not a logo. Your logo isn't going to build an emotional connection the way a photo of you will. The priority is to build an emotional connection with your audience. Most entrepreneurs are trying to build a personal brand around themselves and not a huge faceless entity. Having a profile photo of yourself is more likely to build an emotional connection with you. Website platforms Elizabeth loves WordPress, but it is very technical. There are a lot of plugins and it can be overwhelming for people who are not tech-savvy. If you are doing a recipe membership, WordPress is going to be better than Kajabi. Kajabi is more simple, but it may not be right for everyone. It is a good site for online courses and memberships. It is important to know your membership structure to determine if Kajabi is a good fit. Listen to episode 177 for more details on building memberships. It is important to recognize which platform is best for you. Do it yourself versus hiring someone to create your brand assets and website If you hire someone to do the things you aren't skilled at or good at, you save yourself time and energy. But, if you don't have the money to invest, you can use Canva to create designs, but it can be very overwhelming because there are so many templates. Canva is great for social media posts and other graphics. But, you need to be consistent with your branding. You want them to be cohesive. Go to Etsy or Creative Market.com, design platforms, where you can find pre-created graphic templates. This will help you be consistent. Using these tools can be a great starting point, but they are not customized to your business. Time is everything. If you can get your brand identity built in a month, then you have the rest of the year to build out your business. Christine Marie Slaughter is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles, and is expected to defend her dissertation in June 2021. Her dissertation, “No Strangers to Hardship”: African Americans, Inequality and the Politics of Resilience, develops a theory and measurement of “racial resilience”. Christine's primary research interests include political behavior and political psychology, race and ethnicity politics, and poverty. The second stream of research specifically focuses on Black women voters and intersectionality. Christine's dissertation is currently supported by the Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship (2020), Institute of American Cultures and the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA (2020), and the APSA/ National Science Foundation Dissertation Development and Improvement Grant (2020). Christine holds a MA in Political Science from UCLA. Prior to UCLA, she graduated with a BA in Political Science and Comparative Women's Studies from Spelman College, a historically Black women's college in Atlanta, Georgia. She is a former UNCF/Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow.

Savant's C by GE line is getting a makeover for the new year. Savant's C by GE smart home brand is now Cync. Paul Williams, General Manager of Product Management & Growth - "It's an ideal time to evolve our C by GE™ brand into Cync™, a new brand that best reflects how all of our smart home solutions connect easily and work together seamlessly for a complete smart home experience that can be customized to the lifestyle of every consumer." There will be three new smart home accessories, indoor camera, outdoor smart plug, and a fan switch.  The Cync Indoor Smart Camera has a privacy shutter that physically blocks the lens and cuts audio recording on-demand. There is cloud and local recording via SD card. Subscription service is available for those who chose the cloud based solution. The Cync Outdoor Smart Plug is all weather and has two outlets The outdoor plug can be connected to wifi without a hub and can be used with Bluetooth. The two outlets can be controlled independently through app and voice controls through integration with Alexa and the Google Assistant.  The Cync Fan Speed Smart Switch is an in-wall solution for ceiling fans has four different speeds. In addition to on-demand controls, schedules can be created for customized use throughout the day, and the switch also can be grouped with other Cync accessories. These products begin to arrive in March with the mobile app, and the Outdoor Smart Plug. LG LG OLED TVS New LG OLDS for 2021 A1 OLED Replaces B1 A7 processor and available in 42” C1 OLED available in 48”, 55”, 65”, 77” and new for 2021 83” panels. 4K, Gen 4 Alpha 9 processor which enables the TV to quickly identify the important elements within each frame and adjust brightness in those areas for a better exposed image. G1 OLED available in 55”, 65” and 77” 4k, Gen 4 A9 Processor, Evo (evo panels contain a new luminous element that promises higher brightness, clarity, detail and punch)  Z1 OLED available in 77” and 88” 8K LG partnered with Xbox and Nvidia so that its G1, C1, and Z1 OLEDs could be fitted with G-Sync anti-tearing, stuttering and juddering technology, as well as AMD's FreeSync Premium equivalent. HDMI 2.1 features such as VRR are also correct and present. LG will also be the first brand to have the Google Stadia app available on its TVs in the US, UK and much of Europe. LG also discussed LG QNED MiniLEDs, as previously announced, which combine both NanoCell and quantum dot technologies with Mini LED backlight control. There will also be some plain NanoCell TVs as well, which will come with many of the gaming features, including the Google Stadia app, in addition to non-NanoCell LCD TVs for the budget end of the market. TCL TCL Television TCL announced its 3rd generation of mini-LED backlight will be launching later this year - OD Zero mini-LED technology. It offers personalized recommendations so TCL users can discover new things to watch.  Users can even ask Google to find movies and shows, answer questions, and control smart home devices with their voice on TCL's big screens. TCL Audio TCL has teamed up with Roku to launch the new Alto R1 soundbar, the company's first entry into "wireless" bars and the first soundbar to use Roku proprietary WiFi AUDIO streaming technology. This new feature completely eliminates the need to use a cable when connecting to the TV. Rather, simply plug the soundbar power cord into your wall outlet, turn it on and the TCL Roku TV will automatically generate an on-screen guide for set-up. Additional non-wireless options with Roku TV Ready will also be available later in the year. For consumers who want a bar with Dolby Atmos and voice capabilities, the Alto 82i with Dolby Atmos, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple AirPlay will launch in Q3 with dual built-in subwoofers. Two additional bars will round out the Alto lineup in 2021. The Alto 8e with a 3.2.1 configuration, Dolby Atmos, Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Airplay and Spotify compatibility, along with a wireless subwoofer and up-firing speakers will be available in Q2. And lastly, another premium soundbar with Dolby Atmos. The Crescent Smart Home Speaker, available is in champagne color, is priced at $699.99. Sony 2021 Models Announced All Sony TVS will include XR processing with AI driven texture enhancement, color recreation, signal and data processing and Netflix Calibrated Mode and IMAX Enhanced content, HDMI 2.1 compatibility, including support for eARC, 4K resolution at 120Hz and features like Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), and NextGen TV (ATSC 3.0) compatibility, with tuners that can handle the new 4K-capable broadcast standard. The other major change coming to Sony TVs is the transition from Android TV to its successor Google TV, first introduced last year on the new Chromecast with Google TV. One of the major features of Google TV is an emphasis on Google Assistant and Google Home voice interaction. Sony steps up this capability by introducing hands-free voice control for several of its 2021 Google TVs. All TVs support Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos sound along with HDMI 2.1 compatibility.  Sony Master Series Z9J 8K LED TV. It's the only 8K model announced at this time, and Sony will offer the set in 75- and 85-inch screen sizes. Acoustic Multi-Audio technology, which delivers a sound from screen effect for more immersive listening and sound positioning that matches sound effects and dialogue to the objects and actors on screen. Also known as Cognitive TV which Sony says is a new processing method designed to replicate the ways humans see and hear. Cognitive Processor XR divides the screen into numerous zones and detects where the “focal point” is in the picture. The new processor can cross-analyze multiple elements at once, Sony claims, helping to adjust each element to its best final outcome. Cognitive Processor XR can also analyze sound position in the signal so the sound matches with what's on the screen, as well as upconverting any sound to 3D surround sound. Sony Master Series A90J OLED TV. Available in 55-, 65- and 83-inch sizes, Sony's newest OLED model promises beautiful picture quality with XR OLED contrast enhancement that adjusts the brightness for higher brights and deeper blacks, as well as XR triluminos pro for a wider color gamut and more realistic color palette. The A90J also features Acoustic Multi-Audio technology. Sony X95J. Available in 85-, 75- and 65-inch sizes is 4K. The X95JJ also features Acoustic Multi-Audio technology. Sony X90J, starting with a 50-inch set and ranging up to 75 inches is 4K. The X90J does not have hands-free capability or the room-listening mics that feature entails. Sony has not announced pricing for any of the above sets, or dates for retail availability but these details will be announced in spring of 2021, suggesting these models will go on sale sometime in the early part of this year. The Pro variation is installed at a water main, either inside or outside the home, and can mitigate costly damage through an automatic water shutoff feature. TV without cords Many electronics manufacturers strive for the better user's experience and comfort. One of such efforts is to make devices working without cords by getting the power wirelessly – literally through the air. The R&D stage startup Reasonance has presented one of its prototypes, a fully wireless 40" TV powered with 120W. Episode 6: How to Get a Business Logo You LOVE Without Spending a Ton of Money

In this episode, I share quick tips for creating a business logo that I learned from the (very expensive) graphic designers who did my logo and website. Hopefully this will help you NOT have to spend a ton of money! :) Notes from this episode: 1. Make a list of adjectives/words that express how you want people to feel about your business. 2. Think in color theory. Search google for which colors express the emotions you want people to feel about your business. 3. Think about the problem you are solving for people, and incorporate aspects of this into your logo design. 4. Get the hex codes for the colors you have chosen. And use these EXACT same colors in ALL of your branding. This will help customers recognize your brand. 5. Use Canva (free online design platform) to play with colors/design/etc. 6. Decide if you want to use a serif or sans serif font. Serif are generally considered easier to read (but my logo uses a sans serif font and I love it…it is really about what message you want to communicate to your customers.) 7. Consider hiring a freelancer to design your logo after you've done some of the above things to get clear on what you want. (Fiverr, 99designs, Upwork) ONE LAST THING I forgot to mention on the episode! Think about how people interact on social media nowadays- on their PHONES for the most part. Your logo will appear VERY SMALL on mobile devices and you should consider how your logo will look when people are viewing it as a TINY icon on Instagram or other social media platforms!
