This episode of Sync Music Matters is an interview with NYX's Sian O'Gorman about the scoring of the BBC series Dope Girls NYX is a collective of experimental vocalists and electronic artists based in London. In Greek mythology, NYX is the primordial goddess of the night, born from chaos giving birth to light and day. And it's this duality which inspires their creativity. NYX blend traditional vocal techniques with cutting-edge sound design, and in doing so they craft sonic worlds that bridge the ancient and the futuristic In 2020 their collaborative album Deep England with Gazelle Twin was named one of The Guardian's top ten contemporary albums and in 2021 NYX received Film London's Breakthrough Talent Award. They have just completed their debut TV score for the BBCs Dope Girls due out in the first half of 2025 and are due to release their debut album NYX in March 2025 Some of Sian's musical influences which aren't mentioned in the show include: Her hero Joe Hisaishi "I listen to my Miyazaki film soundtracks almost daily" The Dark Crystal Age of Resistance OST by Daniel Pemberton Mica Levi's Zone of Interest score "My mind was completely blown" Colin Stetson forever! Centred around care, connection, and collaboration, the collective creates immersive sonic landscapes that traverse the full spectrum of human emotion – from the depths of grief to ecstatic joy. Their work balances ritualistic intensity with playful exploration, offering audiences a transformative experience to ground themselves in the power of sound and embodiment. Drawing on influences from psychoacoustics, somatic practices, and experimental sound design, NYX operates at the intersection of composition and improvisation. At the heart of NYX's artistry is a distinct compositional process led by music director Sian O'Gorman. Each piece begins as a deeply personal act of vocal experimentation and layering, evolving into dynamic sonic landscapes shaped collaboratively with performers. This process blends improvisation with precise direction, resulting in music that feels both curated and alive. 00:00:00 Introduction 00:02:00 Interview with NYX - What was your path into music 20:19:06 Under The Skin - Dope Girls and the debut Album NYX 56:16:00 Getting a Taste - What music and art has influenced you? We're back after a four month hiatus to bring you our list of the top 100 albums of 2023. Is it, at bare minimum, a month and a half late? Yes. By "we" do we mean "just Brad because Sean wouldn't want any part of this nonsense"? Yes again. But whatever, we're doing it anyway. It has been another great year for music, which at this point should not be shocking. We've got incredible team-ups galore, big names from the past making a mark in the present, new names bursting on to the scene, everything and the kitchen sink albums, spoken word weirdness, hip-hop standard bearers still innovating, gloopy synths, the sounds of a haunted house, and above all else, a lot of very aggressive, noisy music. It was a hell of a year. So... enjoy? (We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming... eventually. Probably soon. We are still reeling from the Detroit Lions losing the NFC Championship game, so it might be a while) Artists Discussed (In Alphabetical Order): 2FAC, Aaron Dilloway, Aho Ssan, Altin Gun, Ana Frango Elétrico, Armand Hammer, Bandler Ching, BBBBBBB, Bill Orcutt, Billy Woods & Kenny Segal, Bounaly, Brass Riot, Bully, Caterina Barbieri, Charif Megarbane, Colin Stetson, Dead Times, Deena Abdelwahed, Disclosure, Divide and Dissolve, DJ Finale, DJ Girl, DJ Smiley Bobby, EABS & Jaubi, El Michels Affair & Black Thought, Ellen Arkbro, Embarker, Emergency Group, Euglossine, Fever Ray, Fire Toolz, Forest Swords, Gazelle Twin, Gezan & Million Wish Collective, Great Falls, Guilty Simpson & Uncommon NASA, Hitech, Hourloupe, Hyphyskazerbox, ICECOLDBISHOP, Jana Winderen, Janelle Monáe, Jlin, JPEGmafia & Danny Brown, Judgitzu, Karen y los Remedios, Katarsi, KEN Mode, Kool Keith & Real Bad Man, Kouns and Weaver, Larry Wish, Lauren Bousfield, Loraine James, Lost Girls, Lunch Money Life, Madlib, Meyhem Lauren, & DJ Muggs, Mallwalker, Marina Herlop, Matmos, MC Yallah, Mendoza Hoff Revels, MIKE, Mike Nigro, Model/Actriz, Mukqs, M-Ziq, Natalia Beylis & Eimear Reidy, Neupink, Novatron, Nuovo Testamento, Oozing Wound, OrangeTone, Organized Cream, Ortopedia Tecnica, Osees, Paavoharju, Physique, PoiL/Ueda, Private Lives, RP Boo, Screaming Females, Shit And Shine, Sightless Pit, Silver Apples & Makoto Kawabata, Sunik Kim, Sweeping Promises, TALSounds, Tee Vee Repairman, Teeth of the Sea, That Mexican OT, The Gate, The HIRS Collective, Tim Hecker, Tinashe, Tzusing, Victoria Monet, Vorsicht Kinder, Wound Man, Zoh Amba/Chris Corsano/Bill Orcutt --- Website: www.queenvenerator.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/queenvenerator/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/queenvenerator.bsky.social

Ready for a binaural sound adventure? We're wrapping up S05 of Girls Twiddling Knobs with an extra-special episode where, together, we take an immersive binaural deep dive into the ecosystem that is NYX.NYX are often described as an electronic drone choir and are a group of women and non-binary vocalists and non-vocalists who use music technology to create dense, musical creations and performance experiences with artists such as GTK alumni Gazelle Twin, amongst many others.Recorded live at Hidden Notes festival in September, Isobel accompanied the collective over two days to document not just their use of music technology, but also how this is informed by a deep personal connection and somatic practices. This episode also required a different editing approach than usual, so expect to hear lots of sound design and soundscape composition throughout! We've got an hour of immersive sonic goodness waiting for you - which is of course, what we're all about here at Girls Twiddling Knobs - so sit back, relax and remember to grab some headphones for the best audio experience. You can check out NYX here >>You can check out Hidden Notes festival here >> Featuring the voices of NYX: Sian O'Gorman, Philippa Neels, Alicia Jane Turner, Ruth Corey, Phoebe Pimlott, Shireen Qureshi, Cecilia Morgan (Cil) and Laura MischRecorded, edited, produced and narrated by Isobel Anderson.Additional composition and sound design also by Isobel Anderson.Girls Twiddling Knobs is hosted by Isobel Anderson, produced by Isobel Anderson and Jade Bailey and is a Female DIY Musician Production.Explore more episodes here.Listen on Spotify.Join the Girls Twiddling Knobs Podcast Community here >>
I Wonder U / Men Like Gods / Obelisk (Alphabets Heaven Remix) / GUTS / Unflesh (Carter Tutti Remix) / Puberty / The Suburbs / Hobby Horse / Gaudete / Fool / Herd / Belly of the Beast / Better in My Day (ft. Phoar, what a scorcher! It's a hot box in the studio and hot on the sounds as well. Kicking off with a remarkable track from Matmos, who use the sounds of the Mud-Dauber Wasp to create a thumping electronic banger. We move through various degrees of ferociousness, with Nihiloxica, Gazelle Twin, and Lila Tirando a Violeta and Sin Maldita bringing hefty fire. Elsewhere we're treated to a new percussive experiment from Hihats in Trees, there's an opus from Tenerife's Gaf y la Estrella de la Muerte, multiple tastes of Polish experimentalism and more. Ellen and Mark take a turn into the exclusive gated community of housewives in cinema and television, ahead of the release of new film Don't Worry Darling. Ellen investigates why we're so drawn to housewives on screen, from original housewife satire The Stepford Wives to global reality TV phenomenon The Real Housewives, with the help of critic Anna Bogutskaya and Real Housewives exec producer Andy Cohen. And Mark celebrates director Todd Haynes' cult 1995 film Safe, starring Julianne Moore in her first lead role, as a housewife suffering from a mysterious ailment. He speaks to pioneering independent film producer and long-time Haynes collaborator Christine Vachon about the making of Safe, and hears from composer Gazelle Twin and director Desiree Akhavan about the personal and emotional responses both had to the film. This week's Viewing Note is courtesy of Olivier-nominated Home, I'm Darling star Katherine Parkinson. Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

London-based collaborative electronic drone choir NYX are reshaping the role of the traditional female choir through organic and synthesised means. They are currently under the creative direction of Josh Thomas, and Aotearoa-raised Philippa Neels and musical director Sian O'Gorman. Earlier this year, they released the album Deep England alongside Gazelle Twin, alongside a performance film directed by Iain Pollard and Jane Forsyth. Alongside solo projects, NYX are currently developing special projects with Christina Vantzou, Hatis Noit, Dan Tobin Smith, Hatis Noit, Iona Fortune and Alicia Jane Turner with Dead Light. We feel they are one of the most groundbreaking acts around at the moment, and are delighted to hand over the reins. About the mix: "With clubs and festivals reopening in the UK this past weekend, we decided to use the first half of our FP mix to showcase some of the more uptempo electronic music and club bangers we've been listening to later. In the second half things slowly dissolve into more fractured electronic soundscapes, fourth world excursions and ambient drone. The mix features an unreleased track of ours 'Mutualism' which you'll be hearing more about soon. This radio show was mixed by NYX Creative Director & DJ Josh T. Discover the unsung female pioneers of electronic music in our Sisters With Transistors special. This one’s a real treat for your ears! First up, Anna is joined by collaborators on the doc: writer-director Lisa Rovner and pioneer Suzanne Ciani. Lisa explains the process of finding archive footage and constructing the ‘herstory’. From Buchla concerts to making music for the movies, Suzanne recalls her experience of being a female composer in the 70s and 80s. She remembers being one of the first women to solo score a Hollywood movie, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, in 1981. Keep listening for Suzanne’s discovery of a female film composer working in the 40s! And stay tuned for advice if you're keen to follow in her footsteps. Next, Anna chats to contemporary electronic composers Shiva Feshareki and Elizabeth Bernholz (aka Gazelle Twin). They recount their careers so far and talk about the unexpected positives of working in a male-dominated industry. Shiva explains how she got involved with Sisters With Transistors, and Elizabeth describes her powerful emotions when watching it. Together, they discuss the pioneers they look up to and those they have discovered through the doc. Gazelle Twin, Lucrecia Dalt, Cosey Fanni Tutti and Keeley Forsyth, four artists making truly original music outside of the mainstream, discuss how they use electronics to build different themes in their music, working within and breaking out of their sonic comfort zones, and how making music leads to creative catharsis. Composer and producer Gazelle Twin explores industrial and avant-garde sounds through her albums, soundtracks and remixes. Her latest record, Deep England, sees her collaborate with electronic drone choir NYX. Sharing her experiences is Lucrecia Dalt, a sound artist from Columbia now based in Berlin. She draws on influences from her academic background as a civil engineer, encompassing electronics and avant-garde sounds in her compositions. Cosey Fanni Tutti is an English performance artist, author and musician who is known for her ground-breaking band Throbbing Gristle, which she co-founded in 1976. She has released music as a solo artist and as part of the duo Chris & Cosey. Keeley Forsyth is an artist and actress from the north of England, known for starring in many acclaimed film and TV series over the last 20 years. At the start of 2020 she released her atmospheric debut album Debris, in which she explores personal experiences through minimal arrangements and her evocative, intimate vocal.
Corinna Faith's chilling supernatural horror film The Power charts one horrifying night in a dank, dreary hospital in 1974 London for Val (Rose Williams), a nurse in training whose idealism and naivete brushes up against the insular, competitive world of the hospital she's been assigned, one with its own morbid history of ghosts and the violence of the past. Stuck in the dark with little but her own fears, the animus of her colleagues, and the terrifying specter of a mysterious presence that haunts the hospital, Val's in for a bone-chilling night that will touch on not just her own personal traumas, but the collective trauma of abused and disbelieved women throughout history. Underpinning all of Faith's bone-chilling terror is The Power's score, courtesy of English avant-garde musician Elizabeth Bernholz, also known as Gazelle Twin, collaborating with composer Max de Wardener. Gazelle Twin's music (which you can hear in brilliant albums like Unflesh and Pastoral) is harsh, brittle, and confrontational, experimental works that jab a finger at the English patriarchy and advocate for the spirits of the dispossessed -- fitting thematic links to The Power's feminist fury. Together with de Wardener, himself an experienced composer with similar predilections towards deconstruction (see: Music for Detuned Pianos), the pair seamlessly meld droning '80s synths with eerie, delayed vocals and scratches that blur the line between scoring and sound design. It's harsh, disquieting work that absolutely nails Faith's sense of atmosphere, and chills to the bone even before you get to Gazelle Twin's distorted, ominous single that closes the film, "The Well." I had the pleasure of talking to Bernholz and de Wardener about their collaboration on The Power, how the film's themes and settings match their respective works outside the scoring world, and collecting the roster of rattles, scratches, and shatters in the score from the very same hospital in which The Power was filmed. The Power's original soundtrack is currently available digitally courtesy of Invada Records, with a vinyl release to follow.
In this B-Side, Eric interviews writer Guy Mankowski, author of “Albion's Secret History: Snapshots of England's Pop Rebels and Outsiders “. The book is about pop culture rebels of the UK, and their relationship with English society. It's a fascinating look into why these artists were important, in the context of modern British history. Eric discusses Guy's works, and the artists that he covers overlapping with Pod Like a Hole's Run the Gamut season: Tricky Massive Attack The Clash Depeche Mode The Cure The Brit Pop Bunch and many others! It is a fun, breezy interview with a new friend of the show, and a great music writer. Elizabeth Bernholz conceived the moniker Gazelle Twin in 2009 under which she has released the critically acclaimed albums; Pastoral (2018), Kingdom Come (2017), Unflesh (2014) and her debut, The Entire City (2011). Adopting a radical and conceptual approach to composition, fusing classical and early traditions with experimental, electronic production, Bernholz always strives for “challenging outcomes”. Her work is often presented through extraordinary live performances, which feature changing personas and voice as a central element. Aside from her own projects, Bernholz regularly collaborates with creators in Theatre, TV, Film and Gaming. 2020 and beyond will see the release of two feature films (USA and UK) which will feature her music, new works exploring live theatre and virtual performance, and an ongoing collaboration with the London-based NYX electronic drone choir following it's performance at London Jazz Festival, QEH in November 2019. Bernholz's experiments in composition and production were recognised by the University of Sussex (of which she is an alumna), and in 2020 the ‘Gazelle Twin scholarship for Women in Music Technology' was setup to address the under-representation of women in music technology. The new album 'Deep England' by Gazelle Twin & NYX Electronic Drone Choir is out 19.03.2021 on NYX Collective Records. Pre-order here gazelletwin.com Bandcamp Instagram Facebook Twitter

The long-awaited (okay, 12 months) return of Shackleton's Tunes of Negation is a real highlight at the end of this week's show. Before that we have a treasure trove of experimental sounds, from the blistering grindcore of Sulk to the stunning modern classical of Mirry. Also on the show, we have Gazelle Twin and NYX's exquisitely unsettling cover of Paul Giovanni and Magnet's Fire Leap (from The Wicker Man), we have collage art from Negativland, cumbia from Agrupación Changó, Peruvian 8-bit coldwave and a lot more. Tracklisting Negativland - We Can Really Feel Like We’re Here (Seeland Productions) Agrupación Changó - Oroí oroá (Llorona Records, Colombia) Vapour Theories - Breaking Down(The Portals Of Hell) (Fire Records, UK) Sulk - Pee-Wee Gurnman (ft De Mosselman) (self-release, UK) Mirry - Study in B flat Minor (Dinked Edition, UK) Alex Stolze - Horses and Acres (Nonostar Records, Germany) Loosers - Kill Screen (Lovers & Lollypops, Portugal) Varsovia - Hablemos Claramente (Buh Records, Peru) Gazelle Twin & NYX - Fire Leap (NYX Collective Records, UK) Tunes Of Negation - Your Message is Peace (Cosmo Rhythmatic, Germany) Produced and edited by Nick McCorriston.
Covid-19 lockdown was implemented in the UK this week, so Gareth has a solo show for you. A whole heap of favourites have been putting out music: obviously something from Uganda's Nihiloxica, whose first LP is forthcoming on Belgium's Crammed Discs. There are also two Coronavirus-related records, with a one-day write and record track from Gazelle Twin, and a brutal industrial punk record from Germany via Turkey project BEEATSZ v2.0999d. Chuck in the mesmerising new record from Glasgow-based Finn Cucina Povera, and there's more than enough good stuff to improve your mood. It's a very English and very apocalyptic episode of We Have A Technical as recent records by Gazelle Twin and Current 93. Be it political, personal, or religious, endings and great changes are taken up in fraught and anxious ways on "Pastoral" and "The Light Is Leaving Us All". Bruce and Alex also take a look at the just announced Mechanisms Fest and the website's impending year end coverage on this week's IDieYouDie.com podcast!
This is Draw the Line with jacki-e. In this show I'm presenting the awesome techno music being made by female producers and DJs. Helping me Draw The Line this week is my guest, Joely who comes from Los Angeles.. Joely's been DJ-ing for 4 years. She has dedicated this mix to a friend and co-founding partner of #NXT_Entertainment. Jarin Love decided this world was not for her and tragically ended her life in April, just 3 days after NXT Entertainment's first event. Two of the tracks are borrowed from that set as they remind Joely so much of Jarin, and they are the Victor Ruiz tracks. Like her name, Jarin was all love, a big part of the LA underground dance movement, very talented, hardworking and supportive of others. NXT plan to call attention to mental health awareness at their future events, in her memory and honour. To learn more, check out these links plus the Go Fund Me page for Jarin's three young boys. https://thisisjoely.com/ https://www.facebook.com/NXT.ENTMT/ https://soundcloud.com/jarinlove/techlepatic-radio https://www.gofundme.com/jarin-blasi-memorial-fund Affiliations for Joely: DTLA - Deep Tech LA - FB @deeptechLA - www.deeptechLA.com Urban House Groove (FB) on DTLA Radio @urbanhousegroove @kraftedofficial NXT Entertainment - it’s not just a party, it’s an experience @nxt_entertainment In my mix in the first hour I have tracks from Dasha Rush, Hydrangea, Aleja Sanchez, Bloody Mary, Tora Vinter, Louisahhh, Magdalena, Gazelle Twin , Paula P'cay, Amelie Lens, Grace Thompson, Nastia Reigel, Violent Blondes and Sandra Mosh. Nothing warms up the snowy streets of South London like some hot South African boogie, but wherever you happen to be listening, you're sure to be enjoying the latest from Soundway records. We have lots of decadent music this week - from Italian producer Silvia Kastel's smelting pot of techno influences, Orchestra of Constant Distress's brutal noise rock, Lando Chill's Tucson hiphop, or Dan Shake's adorable housey disco goodness. Oh, there's a new one from Eels too... Tracklisting The Survivals - My Brothe
Rare live tracks from The Mountain Goats (covering Thin Lizzy and R Kelly) and Talulah Gosh, plus songs by Taj Mahal, Unwound, Steve Cobby, and Gazelle Twin are played and discussed.
Pinch punch - the first of the month... Last Friday was the start of September, and John and Luke were joined in tQHQ by Barry The Barber and Todd The Dog. Abandoning their usual tack of bringing you the best in new music, they picked a selection of ABCs (anthems, bangers, classics) which remind them of the history of the site. During the show John also had his haircut (but thankfully not like Phil Oakey) by Barry The Barber and the music came from Hey Colossus, Blacknecks, Erasure, LCD Soundsystem, The Ex, Gazelle Twin, Destroyer, NOMEANSNO, Kelala, Turbonegro, The Chromatics, Double S & Wiley, some madness to do with rollercoasters that Seb chose, Ibibio Sound Machine, Gravenhurst and of course The Fall. This show was just one of many on (what will hopefully be) the inaugural Quietus Day Of Radio. Thanks to everyone who was part of this 12 hour epic - especially Seb and Iain... we spent the whole period celebrating the best in underground, DIY and global music. We were also joined by Saul of Fat White Family, Nadine Shah, Steve Davis and Kavus Torabi and the Last Skeptic, it's no surprise we ended up trending on Twitter. And that's before we get to the mind expanding exploration of Japanese psych and foghorns by Jennifer Lucy-Allan; a trip round the extreme metal fringes of India with Pavan & Pravin Mukhi (aka Foreign Beggars); Ruth Barnes (The Other Woman) and Piney Gir playing indie, folk and exotica; the heroic and inimitable Lone Taxidermist, not to mention appearances from all the Quietus staffers. So even though it was the site's ninth birthday on Friday you might be forgiven for wondering why our celebratory mood has been tempered with anxiety - like Edvard Munch's The Scream in a party hat. This is because we're currently unlikely to make our tenth birthday - or even the end of the year - without some financial assistance from you, dear reader - and apologies if you've already read this once this week but it really bears repeating - we're facing closure. I have to say that I think it's absolutely crazy given we are Europe's biggest, fully independent music and culture website, reaching an annual audience of millions all over the globe, with a constant supply of high quality articles and content by some of the best writers in the game, and yet again this month we'll be having a whip round, reaching down the back of the sofa, taking the hammer to the piggy bank, emptying the penny jar and selling the prized vinyl on Discogs, just so we can make the rent. Because online magazines tend to be overly reliant on banner advertising (something we're working on a solution to behind the scenes) and we're not venture capital/ rich parent/ tax loss funded, we are being absolutely hammered by the recent catastrophic 90% drop off in online ad spend - not to mention the all-too-predictable chicanery by monolithic money hoovering digital monopolies such as Google and Facebook, which has amounted to an arsenic cherry on the cyanide birthday cake this year. If it helps you to visualise the problem, imagine an egg that a seven year old has painted the face of Jarvis Cocker onto. Now that you have conjured this image into being, picture a cyberman on shore leave pissed up at last orders. Now picture the cyberman - with a semi on and a heart full of hatred - punching the Jarvis egg with all of his terrible might. Do you see the problem? Now, undoubtedly, there will be some among you who cry: "Why should we care? What good are music magazines in this day and age when everything's already online?" This is a completely fair point, to which I have a simple response: "Have you found any music via the Quietus over the last 12 months?" And if the answer is yes, just give us a fiver if you can afford it (please don't give us money if you're from a low income family, still at school, a struggling student, on benefits, or an elderly person burning books to stay warm - all we ask from you is that you just keep on reading the ...

This week we're chuffed to welcome Cosey Fanni Tutti down from rural Norfolk to our exhaust-basted urban HQ for the latest special edition of The Quietus Hour. Luke Turner recently worked with Cosey curating live events around the COUM Transmissions exhibition at Hull City Of Culture, and today he picks up the threads to talk about both that and the reception to her recently-published memoir 'Art Sex Music'. Nine songs chosen by Cosey (taking in The Small Faces, Nico and the Velvet Underground to Leonard Cohen and Imogen Heap to Gazelle Twin) chart her life through hazy days in 1960s Hull via Throbbing Gristle and Chris and Cosey to the present as we chat about, well, art, sex and music.
Luke Turner is on a saturnine sabbatical so Lone Taxidermist Natalie Sharp steps into his comfortable brogues to co-present an hour of new music and, frankly, barely passable chat with John Doran. Exclusives from Gazelle Twin and Noura Mint Seymali, not to mention new music from Melt Yourself Down, Islam Chipsy and Pearson Sound. PERSUADE US to play your current favourite song. Leave a voicemail on 020 33 93 63 95. (Remember to say who you are, what song you want and WHY. Calls charged at your normal access rate.)
