As of posting this episode, Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas leader has been assassinated in Tehran, Iran on July 31, 2024. So have some top Hezbollah commanders in Lebanon and some Hamas commanders in Gaza. Last night on August 12, 2024 Israel Defense Forces(The Tzahal) went on Peak Alertness with the expectation of an Iranian attack as Iran readied its missiles and drones. As of August 13, this morning 7:47 AM in Jerusalem, this attack has not taken place. Putting into present context of our region of the subcontinent: What have been some recent major political developments in the Indian Subcontinent/South Asia: 1. Fall of Ashraf Ghani led Afghan government and the return of Taliban 2. Muizzu taking power in Maldives 3. Imran Khan being removed from power in Pakistan while Sharifs and Bhuttos(more like Zardaris) agreeing to share power under the overarching system of the military directorship(if not outright dictatorship, the military of Pak has learnt that its better to stay behind curtains and direct the throne). Let's not forget that it was Pak Military that had brought Imran Khan to power in the first place. The Pak Fauj giveth and the Pak Fauj taketh away 4. Sheikh Hasina leaving power amidst agitations/mob violence and Bangladesh Nationalist Party eyeing a return, with Bangladesh military support. The Bangladesh Military has definitely gained more political power than it was able to exercise in the last 14 years. Stability of a state, its politics and the grasp on power of its rulers is NEVER GUARANTEED. There is constant struggle with internal elements and national threats. All we can say is stability can be be very uncertain. Israel's sole goal in some ways has been to ensure a security architecture where its statehood does not come under serious threat. October 7 did not exactly threaten the statehood of Israel but it showed how easy it was to destroy the stability and order that Israel had created. After 1973 this was the single greatest event where Israel came under a surprise attack and over a 1400 Israelis died in 2 days. It was a shock to the body-mass of the state and society. And led to the current conflict in Gaza where Israel is trying to bring back the Israelis taken hostage and destroy Hamas as a military force. Many however disagree with extent of correctness of the earlier statement as Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, is in a tough spot and the events of October 7 showed that the security that he guaranteed had failed and the corruption charges are in cold freezer as long as he remains prime minister. Many of the hostage's families have also sought a change in the approach of the Israeli government What are the key issues in the Israel-Palestine Conflict that render any significant peace move impossible without compromises?

To read/listen to this and all my essays, articles and interviews, please subscribe at https://khmezek.substack.com/ "The most important ingredient for state propaganda is historical ignorance." ~ Glenn Greenwald On Sept. 20, 2001, nine days after al Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Bush announced the War on Terror, saying, “Our war on terror begins with al Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated.” NEVER has a presidential promise failed more abysmally than this one. Instead of ridding the world of terrorists, they have multiplied. Just like the “war on drugs”, the “war on terror” has proved too lucrative for the politicians, the drugs/arms dealers, the billionaire's club to consider ending it. When it comes to Hamas, leaders in the United States and Israel should take their share of the blame for creating this monster, although of course they never will. For years, the United States and Netanyahu's government gave billions of dollars in “humanitarian aid” to Hamas, which was then used to amass military supplies and build a network of tunnels beneath Gaza where more than 200 hostages from nations all over the world now languish. Meanwhile, the leaders of Hamas live luxurious lifestyles in Qatar and Turkey, far from the bloodshed of the people they claim to represent. Deals are made in Qatar between men who love war for the power it gives them, just as deals have always been made down through history and I am not sure why anyone is surprised that this is no different. When I think of our ‘fearless' leaders, the image of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani always comes to my mind. As the United States abandoned hundreds of its own people when it exited Afghanistan in 2021, Ghani fled the country with four vehicles and a helicopter so stuffed full of cash that a trail of money was left lying on the tarmac. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kh-mezek/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kh-mezek/support

Wanting to help the women in her native country called Rangina Hamidi back to Afghanistan. Through the khamak embroidery they have practiced for generations, Kandahar Treasure supports women making a living with their needles. Rangina Hamidi's parents and sisters left Afghanistan whe she was a child in the early 1980s, during the war with the Soviet Union, eventually settling in Virginia. She had recently finished her bachelor's degree in religious studies and women's studies when the attacks of September 11, 2001, suddenly turned the world's attention to the country where she was born. As images of covered Afghan women and calls to liberate the country focused the attention of military and political leaders, Rangina felt the pull to do what the whole world said must be done: help the women of Afghanistan. And so 20 years after her family left the country, she found herself drawn back to the city where she still had relatives, in the middle of another war. Although she has pursued crafts and fiber arts for pleasure, Rangina mostly knew about khamak embroidery from seeing it embellishing her mother's clothes. Khamak involves tiny satin stitches in intricate geometric designs that echo the tile work of traditional Islamic architecture. It is the traditional art form of women in Kandahar, a counted thread technique worked freehand over fine plain-weave cloth. A set of khamak linens is an absolute requirement for a bridal trousseau and baby garments, and women often embroider wraps and tunics for men in their families, home textiles, and special occasion outfits. Khamak is one of the few ways that women have been able to earn money in this conservative region, whether restricted by laws or cultural norms. So when Rangina was looking for a development opportunity to help the women of Kandahar, khamak was the natural fit. In 2008, Rangina founded Kandahar Treasure, a social enterprise run by and for the benefit of women in the Kandahar region. Kandahar Treasure not only helps women find markets for their work, it also helps raise the quality of the pieces and pays on completion--especially important when transportation and financial structures can be slow. After founding Kandahar Treasure, and with a young daughter, Rangina was one of the founders of an international school in Kabul. She was serving as the school's principal when President Ashraf Ghani appointed her the country's Minister of Education, a post she held until the fall of the Republic in August 2021. When Afghanistan fell to the Taliban in 2021, it seemed that Kandahar Treasure might be one of the casualties. Remarkably, the organization continues to operate, providing work and payment for women artisans. You can purchase their khamak pieces from several web stores and at the 2023 International Folk Art Market. Rangina currently lives with her family in Arizona, where she teaches at the Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University. We look at how the BBC's language services are reporting the war in Ukraine, and the impact in their countries and regions. Luis Fajardo of BBC Monitoring in Miami explains why there are fears in Colombia that the conflict with Venezuela could turn into a proxy war, and the impact it is having on Colombia's presidential election. Shekiba Habib of BBC Afghan tells us that the conflict has prompted praise for President Volodymyr Zelensky for staying with his people, unlike former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. BBC Serbian editor Aleksandra Niksic explains the country's complicated approach to the current conflict, with ties to Russia, Ukraine and the EU. And she shares the story of Montenegro, which has the world's highest density of luxury second homes owned by Russians and Ukrainians. Giang Nguyen, editor of BBC Vietnamese explains Vietnam's long historical association with Russia, and looks at attitudes to the war across the region. From Bangkok, Issariya Praithongyaem says BBC Thai has been reporting on why some men are so determined to join the fight on the side of the Ukrainians. Janhavee Moole of BBC Marathi and Victoria Uwonkunda of BBC Africa Daily share stories of the many students from their areas who were trapped in Ukraine. We hear why they chose to study in Ukraine and the difficulties they faced trying to escape the war. (Photo: A residential building destroyed by shelling in Borodyanka, north west of Kyiv, Ukraine. As the Taliban swept through Afghanistan in August 2021, many of the former government's top officials, including then-President Ashraf Ghani, fled the country, causing chaos and uncertainty among Afghans. But not everyone in the government had the opportunity or the will to leave Kabul. Ghani's deputy minister of finance, Nazir Kabiri, stayed home. The US-educated technocrat anticipated the financial challenges such a political change could bring to Afghanistan. The Taliban kept Kabiri at his post. But will he succeed in his efforts to prevent a complete economic collapse? Nazir Kabiri, Afghanistan's deputy finance minister, talks to Al Jazeera.

Why I Deserted the Army: Dissident Joe Glenton on the Futility of the Afghan War and “War on Terror”

The world's news feeds have been inundated this week with a deluge of images of the extremely hasty American retreat from Afghanistan. After militarily occupying the country for two decades and spending an estimated $2 trillion, the American-backed Afghan government lasted barely a week without U.S. troops backing it up. President Ashraf Ghani almost immediately fled to nearboring Tajikistan, reportedly taking hundreds of millions of dollars in stolen cash with him.The scenes of desperate Afghans crowding into the last American planes have made this week an extremely embarrassing one for the U.S. and its allies. But what about the human cost of two decades of occupation? One man who knows more than most about the absurdities of the war is Joe Glenton. A former soldier in the British Army, he refused to return to Afghanistan, citing his moral objections to the conflict, for which refusal he served six months in a military jail. Joe Glenton joins Watchdog host Lowkey to discuss his experiences and the recent events in the country.Like many working class people, Glenton saw the military as a potential way out of poverty. He passed through basic training and was deployed to Kandahar Province in 2006. The Army told him he would be going there to help Afghan women, to allow girls to go to school, to build infrastructure, and to stop the booming illicit opium trade. However, he soon became disillusioned with what was going on. He developed a creeping sense of “I think we're being lied to,” he told Lowkey. And what was sold as a peacekeeping mission almost immediately became a hot war. “It very quickly became clear that our presence had become a lightning rod. Where there hadn't been an insurgency, there suddenly was one,” he added, noting that “on this supposed peacekeeping mission we ran out of high-artillery ammunition.”After repeated mortar shelling, Glenton began manifesting the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and once back in the United Kingdom, he publicly refused to return, leaving the country but eventually coming back to fight his case. Today, he is an activist and a writer whose work has appeared in The Guardian, The Independent and The New Internationalist. His book, “Soldier Box: Why I Won't Return to the War on Terror,” was published in 2013.In this frank discussion, Glenton opens up about the cult of imperialism within the British Army, his experiences with the opium trade, and the completely foreseeable collapse of the Afghan government.  Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/MintPressNews)

Scott Guggenheim, an anthropologist by training, is one of the originators of community driven development (CDD). He has worked for the World Bank for over 30 years and served as a senior advisor to the President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani. In this episode, Scott shares how his interest in anthropology started during a 6-month trip to Mexico as a 12-year old, and how an honest but controversial answer about the Vietnam War got him his first job at the World Bank. We then talk about how CDD started in Indonesia facilitated by the 1998 East Asia financial crisis, and how it was possible to build a national program driven by local community insights. We also discuss the importance of interdisciplinary work for development and the role of crises in driving innovation. In the second half of the conversation, we turn to Afghanistan. Scott shares insights gained during his time inside the presidential palace in Kabul, and his views on the existential challenges the country faces. We also talk about what could shift the path Afghanistan has been on for nearly half a century.
