Welcome to part four in the AWS Certification Exam Prep Mini-Series! Whether you're an aspiring cloud enthusiast or a seasoned developer looking to deepen your architectural acumen, you've landed in the perfect spot. In this six-part saga, we're demystifying the pivotal role of a Solutions Architect in the AWS cloud computing cosmos. In this fourth episode, Caroline and Dave chat again with Anya Derbakova, a Senior Startup Solutions Architect at AWS, known for weaving social media magic, and Ted Trentler, a Senior AWS Technical Instructor with a knack for simplifying the complex. Together, we will step into the realm of performance, where we untangle the complexities of designing high-performing architectures in the cloud. We dissect the essentials of high-performing storage solutions, dive deep into elastic compute services for scaling and cost efficiency, and unravel the intricacies of optimizing database solutions for unparalleled performance. Expect to uncover: • The spectrum of AWS storage services and their optimal use cases, from Amazon S3's versatility to the shared capabilities of Amazon EFS. • How to leverage Amazon EC2, Auto Scaling, and Load Balancing to create elastic compute solutions that adapt to your needs. • Insights into serverless computing paradigms with AWS Lambda and Fargate, highlighting the shift towards de-coupled architectures. • Strategies for selecting high-performing database solutions, including the transition from on-premise databases to AWS-managed services like RDS and the benefits of caching with Amazon ElastiCache. • A real-world scenario where we'll navigate the challenge of processing hundreds of thousands of online votes in minutes, testing your understanding and application of high-performing AWS architectures. Whether you're dealing with vast amounts of data, requiring robust compute power, or ensuring your architecture can handle peak loads without a hitch, we've got you covered! https://go.dok.community/slack https://dok.community/ From the DoK Day EU 2022 (https://youtu.be/Xi-h4XNd5tE) Redis is a widely used open-source in-memory data store and cache that has become a key component in the development of scalable microservice systems. While all of the main cloud providers provide fully managed Redis services (Amazon ElastiCache, Azure Cache for Redis, and GCP Memorystore), it may also be simply implemented in Kubernetes if you require additional control over the Redis configurations. This session will lead you through setting up a Redis cluster on Kubernetes with data persistence. The lesson would concentrate on establishing a "prod"-ready Redis cluster that considers storage and persistence even after restarts and discusses recommended practices and considerations. With the help of monitoring and hardware optimizations for your cluster, you'll learn about measuring your performance and best practices for Redis on Kubernetes. We would conclude whether operators or Helm chart will be a more mature option for your Data on Kubernetes needs with Redis and a few tips as a production checklist. Ryan Gray is a Technical Consultant with Portainer.io. Before that he spent a couple of decades building ISPs, carrier Ethernet networks, data centers, and software. He is currently obsessed with container orchestration, GitOps, edge computing, and why naming things is so hard. Hrittik is a Community Advocate at Portainer and a student in his sophomore year. Hrittik focuses on building tech communities and software with the help of cloud native technologies. He has been a speaker at conferences like the Cloud Summit and conducted various events that have collectively empowered students and professionals on DevOps and Cloud.

In this Episode of AWS TechChat, I cover some of the missed but very important updates that occurred in the last few months (November 2019 to January 2020) whilst we embraced re:Invent 2019. The show starts with the introduction of AWS Lambda Destinations. It’s a new feature of Lambda that provides visibility into a Lambda functions invocation and routes the execution results to AWS services, which simplifying event-driven applications when a function is invoked asynchronously, I pivot to a raft of EC2 updates, starting with some house keeping with longer Amazon EC2 Resource IDs. From now until the end of April 2020, you can test your systems with the longer format and opt in when you are ready but after April 2020. All new resources will be created with longer resource IDs by default. It applies only to new resources and i encourage you test out before April 2020. Amazon ElastiCache and Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) are now having new Amazon EC2 instance types available for you. Saving you money and increasing performance. I also touch on how the credit system works on our T instances. Next, I introduce an entirely new service - AWS Data Exchange, which is a new service that makes it easy to securely find, subscribe to, and use third-party data in the cloud. Before jumping in to five FSx for Windows updates around De-Duplication, Encryption, PowerShell, Smaller Volume Sizes and File Share Witnesses for SQL, I talk about Amazon GuardDuty. You can now export findings from across regions and also export findings from all associated member accounts and all AWS regions to a single S3 bucket. To close out the show, I share a unique but important update on Amazon Route53. It now supports overlapping name spaces, simplifying complex AWS accounts Speakers: Shane Baldacchino - Solutions Architect, ANZ, AWS Resources: Introducing AWS Lambda Destinations https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/compute/introducing-aws-lambda-destinations/ Longer Format Resource IDs are Now Available in Amazon EC2 https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2019/11/longer-format-resource-ids-are-now-available-in-amazon-ec2/ Amazon ElastiCache now supports T3-Standard cache nodes https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2019/11/amazon-elasticache-now-supports-t3-standard-cache-nodes/ RDS New Instance Types https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2019/11/amazon-rds-for-sql-server-now-supports-additional-instance-sizes/ Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling Now Supports Maximum Instance Lifetime https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2019/11/amazon-ec2-auto-scaling-supports-max-instance-lifetime Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling Now Supports Instance Weighting https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2019/11/amazon-ec2-auto-scaling-supports-instance-weighting/ Introducing AWS Data Exchange https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2019/11/introducing-aws-data-exchange/ Amazon GuardDuty Supports Exporting Findings to an Amazon S3 Bucket https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2019/11/amazon-guardduty-supports-exporting-findings-to-an-amazon-s3-bucket/ Amazon FSx for Windows File Server now supports Data Deduplication, reducing storage costs by 50-60% for general file shares https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2019/11/amazon-fsx-windows-file-server-supports-data-deduplication-reducing-storage-costs/ Amazon Route 53 Now Supports Overlapping Namespaces For Private Hosted Zones https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2019/11/amazon-route-53-now-supports-overlapping-namespaces-for-private-hosted-zones/ AWS Events: AWS Builders Online Series https://aws.amazon.com/events/builders-online-series/ AWS Innovate AIML Edition https://aws.amazon.com/events/aws-innovate/machine-learning/ AWS Innovate DeepRacer Challenge https://aws.amazon.com/events/aws-innovate/machine-learning/deepracer/

Verizon Media had to create a better, stronger, and faster push notification system to serve the requirements of iconic Verizon brands, fulfill push notification completion time of 27 million devices in under three minutes, and consistently show the push 'toast' on all users' lock screens. Verizon decided to use Amazon DynamoDB and other AWS services such as Amazon ElastiCache and Amazon SQS in conjunction with its own Vespa search engine to power all the use cases of its brands. It also uses Kubernetes to orchestrate microservices across many Amazon EC2 instances. Join this session to learn how Verizon has been able to accomplish all of this.

At Airbnb, we use Redis extensively as an in-memory data store to reduce latency and provide sub-millisecond response for our website, search, images, payments, and more. We migrated our self-managed Redis environment from EC2 classic to fully-managed Amazon ElastiCache for Redis to reduce operational overhead and improve availability. Now, all our Redis is in an AWS managed service that provides multi-Availability Zone support, automatic failover, and maintenance. Attend this session to learn how we migrated our Redis environment while ensuring data integrity and zero downtime.

We have recently seen some convergence of different database technologies. Many customers are evaluating heterogeneous migrations as their database needs have evolved or changed. Evaluating the best database to use for a job isn't as clear as it was ten years ago. We'll discuss the ideal use cases for relational and nonrelational data services, including Amazon ElastiCache for Redis, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Aurora, Amazon Neptune, and Amazon Redshift. This session digs into how to evaluate a new workload for the best managed database option. Please join us for a speaker meet-and-greet following this session at the Speaker Lounge (ARIA East, Level 1, Willow Lounge). The meet-and-greet starts 15 minutes after the session and runs for half an hour.

AWS architecture for Careem, a fast-growing car-booking service in the broader Middle East, has quickly evolved to support over six million users in eleven countries. Careem also operates in areas with weak GPS signals and unique traffic patterns, resulting in the poor user experience of long driver match times and rider wait times. Careem was storing driver location data in MySQL, but their high volume of concurrent calls and lack of geospatial support in MySQL 5.6 resulted in continuous deadlocks and performance issues. Amazon ElastiCache for Redis helped meet their need for in-memory storage service with advanced data structures. ElastiCache for Redis accelerated their car booking application and reduced ride matching times from several minutes to milliseconds. Learn how their big bottleneck of insert and update operations in MySQL became a quick lookup in ElastiCache for Redis by using Redis Sorted Sets, geohashes, and timestamps.

When D2L first moved to the cloud, we were concerned about being locked-in to one cloud provider. We were compelled to explore the opportunities of the cloud, so we overcame our perceived risk, and turned it into an opportunity by self-rolling tools and avoiding AWS native services. In this session, you learn how D2L tried to bypass the lock but eventually embraced it and opened the cage. Avoiding AWS native tooling and pure lifts of enterprise architecture caused a drastic inflation of costs. Learn how we shifted away from a self-rolled 'lift' into an efficient and effective 'shift' while prioritizing cost, client safety, AND speed of development.
