What if the most overlooked passage in Romans holds one of its most powerful truths? Romans 16 reads like a simple list of names—26 people we've never heard of, immortalized in Scripture for reasons that aren't immediately clear. But when we dig deeper, we discover something profound: these aren't just credits at the end of a movie. These are real people with real lives, real struggles, and real faith that changed the world. From Phoebe, entrusted with carrying the precious letter of Romans across dangerous terrain, to Priscilla and Aquila, who risked their lives and opened their home for the church in hostile Rome, to Rufus, whose father Simon carried Jesus' cross—each name tells a story of sacrifice, diversity, and unity in Christ. What emerges is a beautiful picture of the early church: slaves teaching masters, women serving as deacons, Jews and Gentiles working side by side, wealthy and poor united in purpose. The central message challenges us today: Are we building the same kind of diverse, sacrificial, loving community? Would we risk our homes, our comfort, our status for the gospel? And most importantly, do we recognize that God knows each of us by name, just as intimately as He knew these 26 saints? This passage reminds us that God is both infinitely big—breathing out stars—and intimately personal, numbering the hairs on our heads and calling us each by name.**Detailed Notes**- **All Scripture Matters** – 2 Tim. 3:16–17 - All Scripture is God‑breathed and profitable, even “just a list of names” in Romans 16. - The Spirit intentionally preserved these 26 names to teach us.- **Phoebe (Rom. 16:1–2)** - Sister, servant (diakonos / deacon), patron (financial supporter). - Likely carried the only copy of Romans from Corinth to Rome—dangerous, costly, yet faithful. - Deacons = lead servants; trusted with people, money, and needs.- **Priscilla & Aquila (16:3–5; Acts 18; 2 Tim. 4:19)** - Fellow workers; risked their necks for Paul; hosted a church in their home. - Forced out of Rome; everywhere they went, they planted churches. - Viewed exile and hardship as mission, not punishment. - Tentmaking friendship with Paul likely began through ordinary vocational contact. - Lifelong, harmonious partners in ministry.- **Epaenetus (16:5)** - First convert in Asia; Paul still knows his name and story. - Firstfruits of a Gentile harvest.- **Andronicus & Junia (16:7)** - Kinsmen, fellow prisoners, in Christ before Paul, well known among the apostles. - Likely family Paul once persecuted; powerful testimony of grace and reconciliation. - Example of costly obedience (imprisonment, suffering).- **Ampliatus & Others (16:8ff)** - Likely former slave who rose to church leadership. - Early church mixed slave/free, male/female, Jew/Greek, rich/poor—fulfilling Gal. 3:28. - Masters sometimes sat under teaching of their slaves; the kingdom inverts status.- **Rufus & His Mother (16:13; Mark 15:21)** - Probably the son of Simon of Cyrene who carried Jesus' cross. - Simon's forced interruption became his family's salvation story. - Rufus' mother became like a mother to Paul.- **Big Themes from the Names** - Real people, real costs, real love, real partnership. - Church as family: greeting, thanking, remembering, honoring. - Diversity and unity under Christ, not human categories.- **God Knows Your Name (Luke 19:1–10 & Survey of Scripture)** - Jesus calls Zacchaeus by name; salvation comes to his house. - God calls individuals by name across Scripture (Adam, Noah, Moses, David, Lazarus, Saul, etc.). - The Creator who names the stars also numbers the hairs on our heads. - He has not abandoned or forgotten us; He is personal and near.---**Practical Applications**1. **See Yourself as a “Name” God Knows** - Pray personally: “Lord, thank You that You know me and my situation.”2. **Embrace Servant Leadership** - Look for ways to be a “Phoebe” or a deacon‑hearted servant this week—meet a practical need.3. **Open Your Home and Life** - Consider how your home/resources can serve the kingdom, not just comfort.4. **Pursue Gospel Friendships** - Initiate one new conversation at church; your “tentmaking” connection may become lifelong partnership.5. **Reject Status & Division** - Examine prejudice (race, class, gender, education). Repent and intentionally honor someone different from you.---**Discussion Questions**1. Which person in Romans 16 stood out to you most and why? 2. How does knowing that God preserved these “hidden” names affect how you see unnoticed service in the church? 3. Where might God be inviting you to turn a hardship or “exile” into a mission opportunity? 4. In what concrete ways can your home or job become a platform for ministry, like Priscilla and Aquila? 5. How have you personally experienced God's “He knows my name” care? 6. What divisions or hierarchies do you see creeping into the church today, and how can we resist them?

What happens when a nation blessed by God slowly drifts until it starts living like God no longer matters? Summary The book of Hosea reveals the heartbreaking story of a faithless people and a faithful God. Through the shocking command for the prophet Hosea to marry an unfaithful woman, God illustrates Israel's spiritual adultery and exposes the deeper problem of divided loyalty. Hosea shows how a nation's moral collapse begins when it forgets the God who formed it, replacing true relationship with empty religion. Yet even in the midst of judgment, the book reveals God's relentless covenant love and his promise to redeem those who return to him. Reflection & Small Group Discussion Questions 1. Why do you think God chose Hosea's marriage as a living illustration of Israel's spiritual condition? 2. How does the Bible's description of idolatry as "adultery" change how we understand sin? 3. What are some modern idols people trust for security, identity, or success instead of God? 4. Hosea connects spiritual decline with national collapse. Why do you think the two are related? 5. What is the difference between knowing about God and truly knowing God (Hosea 6:6)? 6. Why can religious activity continue even when a person's heart has drifted from God? 7. What does Hosea reveal about the tension between God's justice and his mercy? 8. Why is God's question in Hosea 11:8 such a powerful window into his heart? 9. How does Hosea and Gomer's story foreshadow God's plan of redemption through Christ? 10. In what area of your life do you need to return to God with renewed loyalty and trust?

In this special wrap-up episode, Ben McAlary joins Season 3 hosts Elena Lambros and Lorraine Johnston to reflect on the recurring themes that shaped nine thought-provoking conversations across the last 10 episodes of Game Changes. Across sectors and geographies, one message came through clearly: ESG challenges are systemic. Whether discussing climate risk with Dariel De Sousa, sustainable investing with Rebecca Ogg, or transition planning with Pauline Martin, guests urged us to look beyond isolated issues and examine the architecture of the systems shaping finance, infrastructure and regulation. Another powerful thread was impact over optics. Australia’s Anti-Slavery Commissioner Chris Evans reminded us that ESG is not about glossy reporting but about real-world outcomes. Similarly, Nishikant Gupta of Conrad Energy highlighted the importance of curiosity, collaboration and practical action in turning strategy into measurable change. Collaboration and capital allocation also emerged as decisive levers. From Oliver Kade’s call for cross-sector partnerships to scale waste management solutions, to Claire Reid’s explanation of how innovative financing models can unlock community energy infrastructure, the season explored how funding structures and collective action shape results. Alongside the parliamentary vote, electors will also vote in a referendum – on whether or not to adopt the July National Charter. Bangladesh has two major legacy parties -- the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) and the Awami League. With the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League banned from contesting, the two main players are the BNP, which is contesting from 288 seats, and the Jamaat-e-Islami, which is seeking 224 seats. There is also the student-led National Citizens Party (NCP), which will contest in 32 seats, as part of an alliance with the BNP. What are the main issues in this election? What's at stake for the minorities in Bangladesh? What are the prospects for the non-legacy parties? Guest: Kallol Bhattacharjee from The Hindu's Delhi bureau, who joins us from Dhaka. In this opening episode of Ashurst’s Taxed Out series, partners Vanja Podinic and Colin Little unpack the dominant Australian tax controversy themes from 2025 and what they signal for the year ahead. They explore the ATO’s whole-of-code approach, the escalation of scrutiny on financing and marketing hubs, related-party arrangements and private capital, and the continued interplay between transfer pricing, PE risk, intangibles and anti-avoidance. Colin and Vanja break down the ATO’s FY25 settlement and certainty data, including the decline in APAs, the rise of bilateral agreements, and growing use of the Mutual Agreement Procedure. They also reflect on the landmark decisions that shaped 2025 from embedded royalties and anti-avoidance in PepsiCo and Hicks, to Division 855 disputes in YTL and Newmont, and the Bendel decision now before the High Court. Finally they close with the 2026 cases to watch, including Bendel, Tabcorp, Coca-Cola and The Star, and share practical steps for taxpayers preparing for another active year of reviews, audits and litigation. We did pretty well with the 3 main themes, but not so good on 4 sub-topics we teased. We will aim to be better targeted on what we highlight for 2026. This week we evaluate how we did on our “Top 10 Tactical Calls” that we published in late January (here). We use a “Good Call” or “Bad Call” framework to assess how we did. Spoiler alert: Overall we did well, but were far from perfect. Finally, we do a broader assessment on how we are feeling about major Super-Spiked themes and topic areas after what has now been 4 years of publishing. What are we proud of, what if anything are we not, and what are we thinking looking ahead. We heard from many of you that appreciated that we did a proper assessment of our calls. Someone even said we were a tough self-grader. It baffles us why everyone doesn't take this approach. Companies put out targets or promises, Wall Street analysts make calls and publish outlook reports, academia and policy shops do their own version of opinion making. All those groups, in our humble opinion, would benefit from doing their own self-assessment. People like them! It's popular. It builds credibility and accountability. This will be our final Super-Spiked of 2025. We will return most likely on January 10th. On behalf of everyone associated with Super-Spiked and Veriten, we wish you and your families a Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and a great Holiday Season!!!

The 3 major topic areas were (1) energy scenario normalization; (2) power; and (3) how we thought about various energy sources and technologies. We had also teased several sub-themes about crude oil, China, M&A, and US/Canada policy. With nearly a year's hindsight, we did decently well on the three major topic areas, but left a lot to be desired on the four bonus topics. We believe it is always a good idea with those kind of posts to revisit how things played out.

This video will publish just two days before we have a new administration here in the U.S. And as we highlighted in our last few Super-Spiked's from December as well as the “Big Themes for 2025” outlook post from last week (here), we feel considerable optimism that the narratives and perspectives about energy are becoming more pragmatic and sensible after a pretty rough stretch over 2021-2024 where a very narrow definition of “The Energy Transition” unfortunately dominated energy mindspace. Our confidence that that era decisively came to a close in 2024was on a full display in what was a remarkably civil and mostly thoughtful confirmation hearing for Chris Wright, president-elect Trump's nominee to be energy secretary, conducted by the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. In this video we hope to further expand on our key themes for 2025 through the lens of some of the pushbacks or key questions we have been fielding.

Windows95man (23:14), Flamy Grant (35:34) This week we're looking at Eurovision 2024 through the lens of the big themes we've talked about in our first season. We talk about Eurovision's relationship to America and contemporary pop, we examine the contest's move away from English language dominance, we dive into the updates on juries and voting, and, finally, we cover this year's biggest controversies. Then we talk to our first Eurovision 2024 contestant, Finland's Windows95man-- a performance artist who shot to viral fame when a photo of him dressed as the character he created was retweeted by John Cena. Finally, we sit down with Flamy Grant, a Christian drag queen who shot to #1 on the iTunes Christian Charts after being attacked on twitter by a right wing pastor. Flamy tries to figure out which controversial numbers succeeded at Eurovision in a game we're calling "Topping The Right with Flamy Grant" Windows95man, No Rules, Finland 2024: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tf1NS1vEhSg Flamy Grant, Good Day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiXscOjacIM TOPPING THE RIGHT WITH FLAMY GRANT Joan Manuel Serrat, La La La, 1968: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=se24_GEA8vc Gigliola Cincetti, Si, Italy 1974: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7HnHFAJg7I Concita Wurst, Rise Like a Phoenix, Austria 2014: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaolVEJEjV4 Elena Tsagrinou, El Diablo, Cyprus 2021 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mk4amZlPa4g Hadise, Dum Tek Tek, Turkey 2009: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Nx6iVCaix0 Mahmood, Soldi, Italy 2019: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=tEwvUu1dBTs

In this video we bring those together with an expanded discussion on a number of sub-sectors including the international oil companies (IOCs) & Canadian “Big-4” oils, US “Big-3” downstream, US/Canada midstream (includes pipelines and MLPs), and gassy E&Ps. Traditional energy exhibits a massive and diverse set of opportunities and one of our 2024 aims is to provide our perspectives on where differentiated opportunities exist. The world has now recovered from the deep COVID trough. The recovery trade in traditional energy ended in 2022. Balance sheets are fixed and profitability structurally improved (versus last decade). The challenge now for individual companies across the various sub-sectors is to articulate and demonstrate a differentiated approach to meeting the world's massive unmet energy needs through a strategy that is both profitable and durable, or, recognizes a lack of durability by liquidating, selling, or otherwise distributing essentially all cash back to investors. If this week's video is not enough for you, Arjun also appeared on Lykeion's (Geopolitics of Commodities) podcast hosted by Scott Smitson. The 55-minute discussion (link) covered global energy, Europe's energy polices, under appreciated aspects of the energy transition, the role of government in energy policy, near-term geopolitical risk and spare capacity, and more.Arjun also joined Tom Loughery and Reed Barrett of FLOW on a 54-minute webinar ( link, password S4Pz0+4v). Key topic items included our SuperVol framework, Tom's view on the “second-half” of shale, the role of early versus late stage private equity, exploration, Super Major/large-cap E&P vs SMID-cap E&P strategies, and what our “phasing-in profitable growth” theme really means. As always, we appreciate and look forward to your comments, critiques, and, if you wish, praise.

Was the release of ChatGPT and the subsequent generative AI models the beginning of the end for humanity? Should we be more concerned about the longer-term implications or the risks right around the corner? In this special episode, I'm responding to another thought-provoking dialogue from a recent Diary of a CEO between Steven Bartlett and Sam Harris. Sam brought to the conversation a unique perspective, looking at the situation through the lens of a philosopher and neuroscientist rather than a technologist. Reflecting on the conversation, there were areas where, despite our differing worldviews, we aligned. However, there were also some specific areas where we diverged. In the video I respond to some of the key themes such as the lack of direct connection between greater intelligence and greater ethics, the immediate threat of misinformation, the erosion of trust in society and the implications, what it really means to be human. I'd also highly encourage you to stick around until the end where I unpack the richness of Sam's recommendation to every person for improving their happiness. I'm not even sure he realized the magnitude buried in the simplicity of his statement. So, if you're eager to challenge your thinking and continue plumbing the depths of AI and the future it brings with it, this video is for you. And, if you found this video beneficial, check out more of my content and be sure to subscribe as I continue living life at the intersection of business, technology, and the human experience.
