Send us a textBriona Simone Jones crafted a gift to the world with Mouths of Rain: An Anthology of Black Lesbian Thought, and we feel lucky to have read it. In this episode, we share the words of the brilliant Black minds who contributed to this work, specifically covering "Part I: Uses of the Erotic, 1909-2020" and "Part II: Interlocking Oppressions and Identity Politics, 1980-2020." The nutrient density of this anthology required us to split this episode into two parts in order to honor it the way we wanted to, so come back next for parts III-V. Please send us your favorite Black artist on our Instagram page, and we will include them in our post at the end of Black History Month honoring our community's favorite Black artists. We want to provide a space that is easily accessible for Black artists to be shared, lifted up, and supported, and you are part of that work. "Get back on the phone with Nike and you tell them next year, I'm bout to win MVP, I'm bout to take over the league, and if they don't re-sign me they're gonna look stupid." Jonquel Jones WNBA champion, NY Liberty Champion Tap in for this week's Friday episode of the Pivot in partnership with Fanatics for a feel-good conversation of sports, triumph and transcension that you don't want to miss. Ryan, Fred, and Channing host the one and only Jonquel Jones, 2024 WNBA Finals MVP and newly crowned champion with the New York Liberty. Fresh off a nail-biting overtime win against the Minnesota Lynx, Jonquel talks with us about what it means to finally reach the top after years of grit and grind. She takes us behind the scenes of her incredible journey from being a Bahamas native to becoming one of the WNBA's fiercest players, sharing how she's faced down defeat, overcome obstacles on and off the court, and stayed focused on the ultimate dream: a championship title. Jonquel opens up on how the WNBA has transformed in recent years, from deep storytelling to the skyrocketing fan engagement that's brought new life to the league. After 8 years in the league, JJ's experienced the evolution first hand, and gets candid about the struggles she and other players used to face, but now more than ever, people are tuning in to watch elite female athletes do what they do best. Beyond the stats and highlights, Jonquel is passionate about creating real change for the future of the game, hoping that one day players won't have to go overseas to make a living like she has to, and can thrive right here in the United States. Off the court, Jonquel is a leader through handling tough issues with humor and humility. JJ reflects on her journey of self-discovery, from embracing her authentic self as a proud Black-Lesbian woman to realizing her power as a role model for young players. She shares a series of pivotal and emotional moments, like standing courtside before the Finals game and soaking in the reality of the record-breaking crowd of 18,090 she was playing in front of-- memories that will always remind her just how far she's come. And for sports fans, she dives into all her unfiltered thoughts on the WNBA- the good, the bad, and the ugly. From new talent like Caitlin Clark, the lack of platforms for players to tell their stories and get their flowers, and of course the future of women's sports as a whole. JJ speaks honestly on how much she respects Caitlin's approach to the game, the women who play it and defends Caitlin specifically vs the amount of pressure she bears while trying to be herself too. Jones goes on to share what it truly means to live your truth in a world that doesn't always understand. The episode kicks off with Jenn and Daren sharing their excitement for Pride celebrations. In the first segment, they discuss the current wave of Black lesbian visibility, highlighting notable figures like Tracy Chapman, Meshell Ndegeocello, and the cast of "Hoochie Daddies." The episode concludes with a reflection on the importance of Pride Month, especially in the current socio-political climate. Jenn and Daren emphasize the roots of Pride as a rebellion led by Black and brown queer and trans individuals and the need to honor that legacy by continuing to fight for visibility and rights. We aren't beholden to “traditional” gender or parenting roles, queerness is fluid and present in the ways we show up in our relationships and in the world, and we want to build community with other 30-something Black folx who are trying to figure this ish out.

How much of yourself do you bring to the spaces that you spend time in? How much of the different sides of yourself do you bring out when you are at work? At dinner with friends? Spending time with your family? Hanging out at the club? Do you dial back your queerness, do you push down your beliefs or censor your thoughts? Or, are you one of those people who is just 100% themselves no matter where they go? I think that there are merits to both approaches, so I'm not necessarily advocating one over the other. But, I find it fascinating to examine our behaviours and understand the reasons behind our approaches. And this is one of the conversations that I had with this week's guest, the host of the Queer News podcast, Anna DeShawn. Anna is a black, masc-of-centre lesbian, and when she was younger she felt that she had to dial up or dial down different parts of herself depending on where she was. But not, as it so happens, at her lost space - the lesbian bar Star Gaze in Chicago. Follow me Instagram: www.instagram.com/lostspacespod Facebook: www.facebook.com/lostspacespod TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@lostspacespod Support me Buy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/lostspacespod Follow my guest Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/annadeshawn/ Website: https://annadeshawn.com/ Takeaways Finding community and representation is crucial for queer individuals to feel seen and validated. Navigating different spaces can be challenging, especially when aspects of one's identity are not fully accepted or understood. Creating safe and inclusive spaces, like Stargaze, is essential for fostering a sense of belonging and allowing individuals to be their authentic selves. Maintaining energy and confidence while taking up space requires self-care, grounding practices, and a supportive network. Figuring out adulthood is an ongoing process, and it often involves navigating financial responsibilities and finding a balance between personal and professional growth. Stargaze was a popular lesbian bar in Chicago that provided a space for the queer community to gather and be themselves. The closure of Stargaze left a void in the community, highlighting the need for dedicated lesbian spaces. Anna's journey of self-discovery and acceptance led her to embrace her black and queer identities and find balance between them. It's week six of the Georgia legislative session. WABE politics reporter Rahul Bali returns to “Closer Look” to provide an update following a medical emergency during a Senate hearing and the latest news happening at the Georgia State Capitol. Show host Rose Scott then talks with Democratic Representative Lisa Campbell about two bills some lawmakers are concerned about. Specifically, HB 501, which if passed, would loosen Georgia's child labor laws, and SB 367, which aims to eliminate voter drop boxes across the state. Bali then gives an update regarding a bill that would limit deposits for housing and a bill aimed to crack down on swatting, a practice of alerting law enforcement or other first responders with false allegations of criminal or harmful activity at another person's address. Plus, Mary Anne Adams, the founder and executive director of ZAMI NOBLA, the National Organization of Black Lesbians on Aging, reflects on Audre Lorde's writings and legacy and shares details about how ZAMI is celebrating what would've been Lorde's 90th birthday through a hybrid read-a-thon.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
By 1986, almost 40 percent of people diagnosed with AIDS in the United States were either Black or Latino. As the full contours of the crisis became apparent, a group of Black gay men began to organize in cities across the country, demanding attention and support for the people dying in their midst. This effort required them to confront big, important institutions in both the medical establishment and the government — and it meant they had to stare down racism in the broader LGBTQ+ community. But perhaps their most pressing and consequential challenge was the most difficult to name: the rejection of their own community. As men, women and children within the Black community began falling ill, essential institutions — the family, the church, civil rights groups — which had long stood powerfully against the most brutal injustices, remained silent or, worse, turned away. Why? What made so many shrink back at such a powerful moment of need? And what would it take to get them to step up?In this episode, we meet some of the people who pushed their families, ministers and politicians to reckon with the crisis in their midst. We hear the words of a writer and poet, still echoing powerfully through the decades, demanding that he and his dying friends be both seen and heard; and we spend time with a woman who picked up their call, ultimately founding one of the country's first AIDS ministries. And we meet a legendary figure, Dr. Beny Primm, who, in spite of some of his own biases and blindspots, transformed into one of the era's leading medical advocates for Black people with HIV and AIDs. Along the way, we learn how one community was able to change — and we ask, what might have been different if that change had come sooner?Voices in the episode:• George Bellinger grew up in Queens, New York. He's been involved in activism since he was a teenager. He was an original board member of Gay Men of African Descent and also worked at GMHC and other HIV and AIDS organizations. She founded the Harlem Week of Prayer to End Aids and the Balm in Gilead.• Maxine Frere is a retired nurse who spent the entirety of her 40-year career at Harlem Hospital. His work on addiction led him to becoming one of the world's foremost experts on HIV and AIDS.• Lawrence Brown was Dr. Beny Primm's protégé who worked as an internist at Harlem Hospital and at Dr. Primm's Addiction Recovery and Treatment Center in Brooklyn. Brown served on the National Black Commission on AIDS, American Society of Addiction Medicine and took over for Dr. Primm as Director of ARTC (now START) when he retired.• Jeanine Primm-Jones is the daughter of Dr. Beny Primm, a pioneer of addiction treatment and recovery. Primm is a clinical social worker, abuse recovery specialist and wellness coach, who worked with her father for decades before his death in 2015.• Phill Wilson is the founder of the Black AIDS Institute, AIDS policy director for the city of Los Angeles at the height of the epidemic and a celebrated AIDS activist in both the LGBTQ+ and Black communities since the early 1980s.Audio from the 1986 American Public Health Association annual conference comes from APHA.Dr. Beny Primm archival audio comes from History Makers. This episode contains a brief mention of suicide. Kansas City's first Pride parade in 1977 was spearheaded by Lea Hopkins, whose organizing sparked a wider gay rights movement that continues today. But it was only a few weeks after that successful event that Hopkins found herself on the defense again, when a prominent anti-gay activist came on a crusade through town.

Federation and the rukus! Black Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer + Archive and one of a few leading specialists on Black British LGBTQ+ history, heritage, and cultural memory in the UK. In 1997, Ajamu was the Autograph x Lightwork artist-in-residence in Syracuse, USA developing a series of self-portraits during his residency. He studied at the Jan van Eyck Akademie, Maastricht, The Netherlands, and is currently an PhD candidate at Royal College of Art, London. Ajamu's works are held in collections including Tate, London; Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow; Autograph, London; Neuberger Museum of Art, New York amongst others. His second monograph AJAMU: ARCHIVE was published in 2021.Ajamu X: The theoretical provocations, politics, and aesthetic qualities of my work unapologetically celebrate black queer bodies, the erotic, sex. pleasure and play. The work also poses the imagination/fiction in opposition to the constant framing of our complex and nuanced experiences from with a sociological framework, which constitutes a paradigm based on deficit. As a fine art studio-based and darkroom led photographer working with both digital/large format cameras and early analogue printing processes, my practice privileges process over outcome. The tangible/tactile sensuous elements of fine art photography are essential to my visual-photographic philosophy. In tandem with this, the work explores the ‘thingness; of the photographic print as well as the sensual, material attributes of both print and image, without allowing the usual flattening -out of the photographic image to simple notions of representation to enter the frame.Follow @AjamuStudios and visit his major solo exhibition in London: https://autograph.org.uk/exhibitions/ajamu-the-patron-saint-of-darkroomsAjamu: The Patron Saint of Darkrooms runs until Saturday 2nd September 2023, Free entry! @AutographABP Gallery address: Autograph, Rivington Place, London EC2A 3BA, UK Hosted on Acast. Delaware County, Indiana Councilman Ryan Webb posted on facebook that he now identifies as a black, female, lesbian. He's, of course, none of those things...he is a straight, white, male. But, he did it to make a point about how ridiculous the Left has become in announcing anyone can be whatever they want to be. Well, guess what...when the mirror was held up the Left did not like it at all. He's received death threats, calls for termination, and even had garbage dumped in his neighbor's yard (it should have been Ryan's yard but the guy got the address wrong) This is a hilarious episode you don't want to miss. Joyce is a 64 year old Black Lesbian living in NYC. She was diagnosed with HSV in 2014 and shares some well needed wisdom to navigate not just this diagnosis, but also dating in a way that only an someone with this much life experience can articulate. At her age, sex is important, but it's a different kind of priority. We discuss what to look for in dating outside just what our eyes see and tell us what we prefer. We chat about how supressing needs “for” another person to not hurt their feelings, while not only hurting them anyway, but also damaging the relationship. We also talk about meeting people “the old fashioned way”. I was curious about how she met people given that she's 64. She says she just talks to people. So today I'm going to go work out without my headphones and attempt to make convos with folks and report back about what happens. This will NOT be a habit lol. Most of my work is audio based and listening to things so I'm gonna make the effort today and see what happens.

Podcast Topic: We hear this narritive that black women are becoming lesbians cause black men arent there. lets talk about how false that is and the real reason black women are choosing that alternative lifestyle. Podcast Summary: Casanova Williams, CEO, Father, Husband, Friend, Leaders, Creator, Entrepreneur which brings challenges everyday. But society never addresses mental health of the black male as they do with other races and genders.
