Après avoir été abandonné par Ben Affleck, Batman arrive dans les mains de Matt Reeves et sous les traits de Robert Pattinson. Et puisque cela a fonctionné avec le JOKER de Todd Phillips en 2019, DC et la Warner semble vouloir capitaliser sur leur approche plus adulte, mature et sombre de leur univers qui s'est pris un mur avec la catastrophe industrielle JUSTICE LEAGUE. La promotion nous le martèle depuis des mois : ce Batman flirtera avec le film noir, le thriller, sera badass, tourmenté et déambulera en moto sur fond de Nirvana. Cette version grunge et « so dark » du film de super-héros nous a donné envie d'évoquer d'autres films qui, chacun dans leur genre, ont tenté de repousser les limites de la noirceur au point d'atteindre une dimension quasi allégorique. Que pouvait faire Jordan Peele après le phénomène « Get out » ? Il y avait indéniablement beaucoup de pression sur les épaules de celui que l’on présente comme la nouvelle tête de gondole de l’horreur aux Etats-Unis, et une énorme attente pour « Us », qui emmène sur les pas de la famille Wilson, en vacances dans leur maison californienne, confrontés à l’apparition de leurs doubles refoulés. Malgré de grandes qualités, un casting d’une grande intensité et une mise en place maitrisée, l’ensemble est moins bien tenu, l’humour moins bien dosé par rapport à « Get out ». Un sous-texte politique existe à nouveau, bien que plus classique, sur la remise en question de la middle class bourgeoise américaine. Difficile d’interpréter « Us », tant d’intentions pouvant lui être prêtées. Ni dans la peur, ni dans l’angoisse, Us et Peele au milieu du malaise. Ancienne pilote d’avion de chasse, Carol Danvers devient l’une des super-héroïnes les plus puissantes de l’univers alors que la Terre devient le champ de bataille d’une guerre intergalactique entre les Kree et les Skrulls, deux espèces extraterrestres. Elle croise le chemin de plusieurs habitués de l’univers cinématographique Marvel dont Nick Fury, joué par Samuel L. Jackson, qui s’offre une seconde jeunesse.Le jeu de sourcils de Brie Larson agace, poliment mais surement. Antipathique et convenue, l’actrice qui joue le rôle-titre peine à convaincre. Son personnage sans faille prend de haut tout le monde, y compris son chat Goose. Au problème de casting, s’ajoute un couac d’écriture. I began 2018’s words of the weeks with a list of the books that grabbed my attention in 2017, and I am going to end the year with a similar list, of the books and media that most impacted my thinking this year. So, without further ado, my list, presented chronologically in the order I encountered these cultural objects.Lincoln in the Bardo, George Saunders I have been reading widely enough, for long enough, that it is rare for me nowadays to encounter a book—especially a mainstream, prize-winning book—that truly does things with its form that I have never encountered before. Lincoln in the Bardo was the first novel I read in 2018, and remains the most singular, for its odd ghostly dramatis personae, and for the hauntingly uncertain, but undoubtedly moving, father-son relationship that binds the whole. Like the other two “big novels” that are on this list and on many other year-end best-of lists, this one is deserving of all the praise it received.Black Panther (Ryan Coogler), “This is America,” Childish Gambino and Hiro Murai, “DAMN.,” Kendrick Lamar This trio of meditations on blackness, violence, and power in America in some ways spanned two years (“DAMN.” was released in 2017, and I first listened to it in earnest that summer), but each made me rethink artists and genres in the winter and spring of this year. I hadn’t thought that a Marvel fantasy could resonate so deeply with a cultural moment—though I remember reading Black Panther comic books as a young boy and wishing for a larger window into the alternate reality of Wakanda. Childish Gambino’s virtuosic turn—as a dancer, first and foremost—in the brilliant video for his song directed by Hiro Murai, may be the image I most remember from this year. And this spring, I loved having the opportunity to sit with Brandeis middle schoolers and discuss how Kendrick Lamar’s Pulitzer prize for “DAMN.” (the first for a non-jazz or classical music album, ever) speaks to our cultural moment as a country. His was an inspiring world to dip into, and to bring back to ours at Brandeis. Adam, Ariel Schrag Schrag was a classmate of mine at Berkeley High School, but this book came my way by recommendation from a Brandeis parent. An at-times cringe-inducing, often hilarious, and always eye-opening account of a boy’s engagement with the queer and trans communities in New York City, this novel was a powerful counterpoint to the work we have been doing as a faculty and staff around inclusivity and gender identities in the 2018–19 school year. There There, Tommy Orange For me, having grown up in the milieu of the American Indian Movement in the East Bay in the 1980s, Orange’s account of the same (in the decade prior) rang incredibly true, and hit very close to home. Not since Welch’s Winter in the Blood have I read an account of modern Native American life that feels so vibrant, so challenging, and so true. This one also had strong curricular ties at Brandeis, with the work we have been doing as a school with Facing History and Ourselves in considering our First Peoples’ curricula.Hybrid Judaism: Irving Greenberg, Encounter, and the Changing Nature of American Jewish Identity, Rabbi Darren Kleinberg Darren, the head of school at Kehillah Jewish High School in Palo Alto, gave me his book on a visit together last spring, and I have toted it with me in my briefcase ever since. It is also a heartbreakingly beautiful novel. I finished it and saw the landscape around me with new eyes, aware suddenly of how little I know about the trees of California, the urban forest in San Francisco, or even the trees around my house. In reading the book, I was reminded of the power of sharing knowledge, of exposing our kids and ourselves to new learning, of the possibilities opened by seeing the world anew.And that, after all, is the point of reading, listening, and looking—to learn, to grow, to see this amazing world of ours anew.

Episode eight sees Chris and Alex discuss the eighteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther (Ryan Coogler, 2018). As the first Marvel film to feature a predominantly black cast, Black Panther offers the opportunity to situate fantasy and animation both within the codes of the popular superhero genre, and alongside broader critical questions of black subjectivity in contemporary cinema. Chris and Alex therefore move through an examination of its spectacular use of digital animation in its portrayal of Third World-but-secretly-techno-heavy Wakanda; the fruitful overlap between science-fiction and fantasy cinema as categories of classification; and post-Trump Afrofuturist identity politics. Oh, and they talk a bit about CGI rhinos too.

(Attention SPOILER)Les studios Marvel qui nous avaient habitués à toujours plus de médiocrité parviennent cette fois-ci à nous surprendre. Juste un peu. “Avengers: Infinity War” rassemble tous les héros de la franchise des dix dernières années qui s’unissent pour arrêter le terrible Thanos, bien décidé à décimer la moitié de l’Univers. Un parti pris de départ pas évident donc, mais les frères Russo déjà aux manettes des deux derniers opus de “Captain America” s’en sortent relativement bien. Marvel s’autorise enfin à quitter le registre de l’humour et du pur entertainment pour se laisser aller à - un peu - de sentiments, notamment dans une scène finale qui (spoiler vous dit-on) met en scène la mort d’un bon nombre de héros phares des comics. Sauf que quand Marvel a déjà annoncé de nombreux séquels avec certains de ces personnages supposément disparus, impossible d’être totalement dupe, et le marketing vient perturber l’émotion. Dans sa nouvelle production sur Netflix, Alex Garland le réalisateur d’Ex Machina revient sur un thème classique du cinéma : l’irruption de forces inconnues dans notre monde. Avec Natalie Portman en tête d’affiche, le film raconte l’histoire de Lena, une biologiste embarquée dans une zone sinistrée le long des côtes américaines dans laquelle son mari a disparu. Dans cet espace en quarantaine, elle devra faire face à toutes sortes de dangers qui s'attaqueront aussi bien à son intégrité physique que mentale. Scénariste avant tout, Alex Garland pose un contexte intéressant aux enjeux ambitieux, le tout dans des décors très impressionnants. Et pourtant le long-métrage manque finalement de complexité. Le canevas classique des personnages qui découvrent des éléments surnaturels et vont essayer de les comprendre est peu renouvelé et les personnages sont assez creux. Le film se donne des airs de grande réflexion métaphysique mais manque un peu de bases réflexives à l’interprétation. Dans sa dernière création estampillée Disney, Ava DuVernay s’attaque à un des grands fantasmes du cinéma : le voyage à travers le temps et l’espace. Et on aurait pu y croire si le film, qui manque cruellement de subtilité, n’avait pas tourné au pep talk noyé sous une avalanche de bon sentiments. “Un raccourci dans le temps” est l’adaptation du livre du même nom, une référence absolue de la littérature enfantine aux Etats-Unis. L’histoire est celle d’une fratrie d’adolescents qui partent à la recherche de leur père scientifique disparu et dont l’évaporation semble être en lien avec ses recherches sur l’univers et les mondes parallèles. Avec une jeune fille noire comme protagoniste et un discours général sur l’acceptation de soi pour les jeunes adolescents, l’adaptation du livre semblait prometteuse et pourtant… On gave le spectateur d’un discours féministe prémâché, à coup de “motivational quotes” déjà vues et entendues des centaines de fois. Et le propos martelé prend le dessus sur l’histoire qui passe complètement au second plan. Le film ne se rattrape pas non plus sur sa réalisation : les effets spéciaux restent assez médiocres et les images fatiguantes à regarder. Très simpliste, le film à au moins le mérite de poser des questions sur la représentation des petites filles au cinéma et tente de vaincre, à sa façon, les clichés sexistes. [ATTENTION SPOILERS] Déjà aperçue dans Batman vs Superman, Wonder Woman, le dernier élément de la Sainte Trinité de DC Comics, a désormais son film et cartonne au box-office. Sortie de son élément mythologique, Diana, princesse des amazones se retrouve plongée dans le monde des hommes en pleine Première guerre mondiale. Résultat : une direction artistique mauvaise, des effets spéciaux douteux, d’énormes erreurs de scénario et de mise en scène, et une posture féministe revendiquée qui ne tient pas. Cultivée, lettrée, intelligente, Wonder Woman perd ses capacités dès qu’elle prend conscience de ses pouvoirs, un comble pour une super-héroïne que l’écriture fait d’ailleurs passer pour une idiote candide. Jacob King quitte Cape Town pour Los Angeles, à la recherche de sa petite soeur disparue. Lorsqu’il découvre son assassinat, il se met en tête de retrouver les coupables et s’attaque seul à une organisation mafieuse tentaculaire. Entre film d’exploitation et d’art et d’essai, Fabrice Du Welz signe un revenge movie particulier, existentialiste, lent et contemplatif, peu violent en termes visuels. En étranger, il porte un regard inédit sur Los Angeles, utilise les différents couches sociales de la ville en montrant l’humanité des bas-fonds et horreur dans les beaux quartiers. Même si le film manque parfois un peu de cohérence, ou souffre de passages un peu trop explicatifs, ce film d’exploitation plus western urbain que polar est d’une radicalité appréciée. Ghost in the Shell raconte l’histoire dans un futur proche de Major, une cyber-flic de choc incarnée par Scarlett Johansson, rescapée d’un accident et qui ne doit sa survie qu’aux traitements technologiques qu’on a fait subir à son corps. Du moins c’est ce qu’elle croit. Elle oeuvre au sein d’une section pour retrouver un criminel d’un genre nouveau capable d’hacker l’esprit humain. Ce remake de 2017 place l’action au coeur du film et tous les thèmes potentiels ne sont pas traités. On est loin de la portée philosophique et ésotérique du premier film.
