In this episode, we learn how Brookline, MA became the first city in the United States to achieve a tobacco-free generation (TFG). Mark Gottlieb, Executive Director of the Public Health Advocacy Institute at Northeastern University School of Law, Anthony Ishak, Brookline Resident and Pharmacist, and Kate Silbaugh, Professor of Law at Boston University and Elected Town Meeting Representative in Brookline open up about the process, perspective, and purpose behind TFG. The Public Health Advocacy Institute's attorneys are happy to help to determine whether the Tobacco-Free Generation Policy might be a viable approach in your community. Contact them at moreinfo@phaionline.orgAbout ASHASH has been fighting tobacco since 1967. Our longevity is not necessarily something to celebrate – “mission accomplished” would mean going out of business, joyfully. Like most tobacco control organizations, ASH's vision is a world free from tobacco-caused death and disease. But also like most tobacco control organizations, our campaigns sought to mitigate the epidemic, not end it. For ASH, that changed about five years ago.The catalyst for the change at ASH was the adoption of a human rights-based approach to the tobacco epidemic. Analyzing the commercialization of tobacco products through that lens leads to an obvious conclusion: this stuff must be removed from the market. The idea got a huge boost when the State of California decided to put its weight behind a true tobacco endgame campaign. This represents a paradigm shift in public health. California and its allies are no longer interested in just “controlling” tobacco. They're in it to end it.Learn more about ASH CA at endtobaccoca.ash.orgThe music in this episode is provided by Free Sound FX.Subscribe to their channel here.

"Patients may be bringing in harmonies that are tough to connect, fragments of life or things that cannot be integrated. And part of the improvisation in a way is to make sense, to create maybe a new improvisation that ties together different affects or maybe clusters of chords that feel unpleasant. Can we work with them musically to make sense of them at least? And maybe represent them not always in a pleasing way but through our improvisation, be able to create a new motif that now can be examined in different ways." Episode Description: We begin by recognizing the well-known analytic challenge which is to learn the basic scales and then learn to improvise — both being essential tools for creating a dependable and creative analytic space. Rafael shares with us his early familial psychoanalytic influences and his search to find his own voice. We discuss the similarities between analytic free-association and musical improvisation. He demonstrates his clinical observations with three live musical renditions — first the melody and then two riffs off it with increasingly loose connections to the original theme. We discuss how this is similar to the deepening of an analytic process allowing for greater freedom of imagination and self-awareness. We consider the musical versions of countertransference as well as the termination capacity for improvised self-reflection. Our Guest: Rafael Ornstein, MD is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst with a private practice in Brookline Massachusetts. We begin the interview by exploring Mark's work as a translator and the artfulness of translation by grounding our discussion in one of his books, Apocalypse: The Book of Revelation, originally written in Greek. Within minutes, Mark states that religion fulfills one or two purposes: to control or to transform – our conversation explores the latter. We discuss the psychedelic nature of the Book of Revelation, the nuances of translation, living texts, Mark's unpublished translation of the entire new testament, modern Christianity, defining “truth” (as in, “the way, the truth, and the life”) …” – a/letheia: non/forgetting, the Answer to Job found in The Book of Revelation, the conflict in dualism, reconciling dualism, critique of the institutional church, Dionysus and Christ, love, ritual, and more. Early adulthood is filled with intense emotions and insecurity. What if you never fall in love? What if you can't find work you’re passionate about? You miss home. You miss close friends. You’re lost in the noise of how you think you should be living and worried about wasting what everyone says should be the best years of your life. In her book "What Now? Meditation for Your Twenties and Beyond (Parallax Press, 2017), Yael Shy shares mindfulness practices to help twentysomethings learn to identify and accept these feelings and respond—not react—to painful and powerful stimuli without pushing them away or getting lost in them. This is not about fixing oneself or being "better." Readers are encouraged to embrace themselves exactly as they are. You are already completely whole, completely loveable, completely worthy. What Now? shares practices that help us to wake up to this fact. This uniquely tumultuous developmental period is a time when many first live away from home and engage in all kinds of experimentation—with ideas, substances, relationships, and who we think we are and want to be in the world. Yael Shy shares her own story and offers basic meditation guides to beginning a practice. She explores the Buddhist framework for what causes suffering and explores ideas about interconnection and social justice as natural outgrowths of meditation practice. Yael is the Senior Director of the NYU Global Spiritual Life Center and the NYU 'Of Many' Institute for Multifaith and Spiritual Leadership, as well as the Founder and Director of MindfulNYU, the largest campus-wide mindfulness initiative in the country. J Pearce is a boutique wine project that was started by great friends, Andrew Renda and Jarred Pearce. Andy and Jarred met in 2005 when Andy hired Jarred to work alongside him at Vintner’s Collective in downtown Napa. Prior to Andy’s career in wine, it was a love of food and the restaurant industry where he first gained experience. Like many others, his first job was as a dishwasher for a gourmet caterer in his hometown. By age seventeen, he began cooking at The Country Club in Brookline MA, which is home to three US Opens, and the 1999 Ryder Cup. It was there where he was first introduced to the pairing of haute cuisine and world class wines. After several years in the food industry, front and back of the house, he chose to start his quest to obtain more knowledge about the world of wine and spirits. The next eight years were spent helping to manage retail wine shops in the Boston area. His exposure was not just limited to California wines, but to a broad spectrum of global offerings. Countless hours were spent tasting in order to gain a more refined palate and true understanding of what the world of wine has to offer. This passion for a lifelong career in the wine industry was set in motion, and it was time to relocate. Andy and his bride to be Kelly, sold all of their belongings and packed a car to make the pilgrimage from Boston to Napa, no jobs, just a destination, the legendary Napa Valley! They made a temporary home in a rental cottage as Andy pursued his dream, putting his passion and knowledge for wine to the test. The better part of the next decade was spent as the Director of Sales of Vintner’s Collective surrounded by top boutique producers. More importantly over that stretch, Kelly and he got married and now have two beautiful children Maxwell and Adelaide. His family is his driving force.

Braxton speaks with Elliott Kronenfeld, LICSW, CST about his work with couples. Elliott discusses couples by default versus couples by intention. Frequently couples find themselves wondering why they are in a relationship or why they are feeling stuck in boring pattern. Many turn to sex and love to be the "glue" in their relationship. While those two aspects in a relationship are important Elliott offers options for couples that want to build their relationship to last and are looking for the strengthening bond to help their relationship go the distance. In his book "" Elliott explores a 2 column exercise couples can use. He speaks about strategic relationships and curiosity, speaking from "I" in communication, and how "Intimacy is the Balance of Safety and vulnerability." Braxton learns about "The no helping rule" which helps couples improve their avoidance of assumptions and damaging expectations. On today's episode of THE FOOD SEEN, Chef Jeremy Sewall retraces his New England roots, from Samuel Sewall at the Salem Witch Trials, to generations of fishermen in Maine, like his Cousin Mark who supplies his restaurants of all their lobster. The name of his first restaurant couldn't be more apropos, as Lineage literally sit a block away from Sewall Ave in Brookline MA. What Jeremy's done with his fresh perspective for a regional cuisine oft relying heavily on historical dishes from the Puritans, is anew in The New England Kitchen (cookbook). He celebrates a contemporary cast of farmers and thinkers, from Skip & Shore of Island Creek Oysters, his co-collaborators from Island Creek Oyster Bar , to his newest Fort Point oyster bar, Row 34, which pours Maine Beer Company brews. What's not lost is Jeremy's sense of place. He still holds Boston's past (and the Red Sox) near and dear to his heart. This program was brought to you by Whole Foods Market. “What I'm proudest of in Lineage is that it's truly a neighborhood restaurant.” [16:00] “Fall has this great feeling of relief. The summer's over, the leaves are changing and that kind of dictates how you cook and how you eat. You start to crave things that are warming and hearty.” [27:00] –Jeremy Sewall on The Food Seen
