Joely and Tricia Leigh Fisher talk about being the kids of stars, Connie Stevens and Eddie Fisher—the allure of show business, putting on shows in their living room, and deciding at a young age to make performing their career. They share stories of being on the road with their mom, the good and bad lessons they learned, going to Beverly Hills High School while living alone across the street, and what it means to inherit both talent and addictive behaviors. They also open up about being moms, singing, dancing, acting, writing, and becoming beauty entrepreneurs. Joely discusses her stint at SAG, while the sisters reflect on their parents' many relationships, trying to connect with a distant father, and moving forward in a new entertainment landscape. And of course, they share their mom's immortal line: “Once you date Elvis, everyone else is a disappointment.”Bio: Joely Fisher is an American actress and singer, the daughter of Eddie Fisher and Connie Stevens. She is best known for her roles as Paige Clark on the TV series Ellen and Joy Stark on 'Til Death. She is also the younger half-sister of the late actress Carrie Fisher. Her career spans television, film, and Broadway, and she is a political activist currently serving as SAG-AFTRA Secretary-Treasurer.Tricia Leigh Fisher is the daughter of legendary crooner Eddie Fisher and iconic actress/singer Connie Stevens. She spent her childhood on sets and in concert venues, then joined the family business as a teenager, playing Burt Reynolds' daughter in the film “Stick.” Tricia has performed on many stages around the world, including entertaining the troops in the Persian Gulf with the legend, Bob Hope and the USO. After years touring as a back up singer, she landed her own deal on ATCO Records and hit the hot 100 billboard charts. She has continued to work, as an actress, in television and film for the past thirty-five years, starring in films such as Book of Love, Pretty Smart, Arizona Dream, Saving Grace B. Jones, Hostile Intentions and CHUD II. Tricia has worked in television for decades, including her role as Heidi in The Heidi Fleiss Story, 911, Criminal Minds, Rizzoli and Isles, The Mentalist, No Ordinary Family, Ellen, Til Death, and many others. A few of her theater roles include a Los Angeles run and tour of Bermuda Avenue Triangle with Joe Bologna, Renee Taylor, and Lainie Kazan and Miracle on South Division Street at the New Theater in Kansas City. Tricia is currently the lead singer of her 70's band with husband, Byron Thames, and plays regularly to sold out shows in Los Angeles.

Today's Dumpster Dive is sponsored by Incogni! Today in the Dumpster, we're diving right into: The midcentury fabulous Highlands, North Carolina, home that Burt Reynolds owned for a decade or so back in the 80s and 90s. It's on the market, so if you need a two-story monolith, a fire-warmed groove pit, or a stone shower, it can be yours for the low, low price of just $3.699M! If you're looking for some bad news about the 70s - both the decade of the last century and that era of life - the recent saga of Daryl Hall and John Oates might hit the spot. The septuagenarians have settled their lawsuits against each other, but it doesn't sound like either is thrilled. In the "stuff we completely missed" column, actress Laura Prepon married actor Ben Foster - Mazel! - and the pair have since divorced. Apparently their prenuptial agreement went a long way toward speeding that process, but both took the opportunity to fire a few reputational shots at the other.  It seems that the Beckham family - England's David and Victoria and their now-adult children - is bending like... well, like any dysfunctional celebrity family might. Son Brooklyn and his wife Nicola renewed their vows sans any Beckham family representatives, while the famously social media clan has kept mum about the Instagram blasts celebrating the event.  We covered the brief marriage of Oscar winner Halle Berry and Atlanta Brave David Justice years ago, but apparently David is still having - and expressing on podcasts - thoughts about that era of his life. Halle seems suitably unimpressed.  Want early, ad-free episodes, regular Dumpster Dives, bonus divorces, limited series, Zoom hangouts, and more? Join us at patreon.com/trashydivorces! Stroker Ace is like a mashup of every 80s cult favorite — minus the darkness of Deliverance (except for Ned Beatty), and with none of the high-octane realism of Days of Thunder. It's wildly inappropriate by today's standards, filled with sexual innuendo, confederate flags, and glorified nonsense — but it still makes us laugh. When Hal Needham called, Burt Reynolds answered... and created a legendary box office flop that lives on in NASCAR movie history. Why? Because he was driving the Fastest Chicken in the South. The second in our pair of Delmer Daves westerns is certainly the superior movie: taut, beautifully shot, and that theme song! Like last week's film 3:10 to Yuma (1957) stars Glenn Ford, this time playing a villain who seems to have a monopoly on violence 'round these parts being taken in by a farmer (Van Heflin) with a real sense of wanting things to be normal for once. 3:10 to Yuma is also our first movie in the Collection based on the work of Elmore Leonard, a prolific writer whose work has been adapted into dozens of films of a varying quality over the years (from Burt Reynolds' Stick (1985) to Paul Schrader's Touch (1997). Despite there being some truly great films on that list, we won't see anything more from Leonard in this project for about 12 years when we reach the Ranown Westerns boxset at Spine 1186.

In the first segment, a returning Michael Koresky ("Films of Endearment"), the Museum of the Moving Image's editorial director, with his latest book "Sick and Dirty: Hollywood's Gay Golden Age and the Making of Modern Queerness" (Bloomsbury, 2025). The book is an original history celebrating the persistence of queerness onscreen, behind the camera, and between the lines during the dark days of the Hollywood Production Code. From the 1930s to the 1960s, the Motion Picture Production Code severely restricted what Hollywood cinema could depict. This included 'any inference' of the lives of homosexuals. Gay activist Vito Russo famously condemned Hollywood's censorship regime, lambasting many midcentury films as the bigoted products of his titular “Celluloid Closet.” Koresky reexamines these scorned films to tell the story of how filmmakers, straight and queer, in-the-closet and out-in-the-open, smuggled queer themes and ideas into their work, incrementally paving the way for recognition and representation. There is more to the movies during this period of popular filmmaking than meets the eye: The Golden Age set in motion many of the ways we still talk about queerness in the twenty-first century. In this insightful, wildly entertaining book, cinema historian Michael Koresky finds new meaning in 'problematic”' classics of the Code era like Hitchcock's "Rope," Minnelli's "Tea and Sympathy", and—bookending the period and anchoring Koresky's narrative—William Wyler's two adaptations of "The Children's Hour," Lillian Hellman's provocative hit play about a pair of schoolteachers accused of lesbianism. Lifting up the under-appreciated queer filmmakers, writers, and actors of the era, Koresky finds artists who are long overdue for reevaluation. Through his brilliant analysis, "Sick and Dirty" reveals the 'bad seeds' of queer cinema to be surprisingly, even gleefully subversive, reminding us, in an age of book bans and gag laws, that nothing makes queerness speak louder than its opponents' bids to silence it. In the second segment, Filmwax friend Josh Karp returns once again to discuss his latest article for the online magazine, Air Mail: "The Miracle at the Truck Stop", about the long shuttered Burt Reynolds Theater in Jupiter, Florida. At the height of his fame, Burt Reynolds had a dream: to open a dinner theater in the middle of nowhere! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szjlaU00vKw

What happens when Burt Reynolds and Hal Needham, the star and director of the hit films “Smokey and the Bandit” and “Cannonball Run”, reunite for a putative romantic comedy about a deviant NASCAR driver and a church lady turned fried chicken chain ad exec? Our horrified hosts weave a wonderment of wordplay, yet still somehow manage to run out words for “atrocity.” Loni Anderson, Jim Nabors, Ned Beatty, Parker Stevenson and Bubba Smith were all somehow forced to do time in this carceral excruciation of a film - and the Multiplex Overthruster crew has nothing but elucidating empathy as they perform a much-needed autopsy of one of the low points of the Summer of '83: “Stroker Ace”! We talk about how he raised a million bucks for his first feature back in the '90s, what it was like meeting a major investor while doing background work on THE WATERBOY, and why trying to attach actors before you have money in the bank is almost always a waste of time. Scott breaks down the psychology of raising money, how to build trust with investors, what really goes into a legit business plan, and how to tap into your network without being awkward about it. He also shares insights about his work with Quentin Tarantino and Burt Reynolds, talks about why most filmmakers fail to pick up the phone, and explains what he calls “asymmetrical risk/reward” basically, how to offer big upside while protecting your downside. It's all super real and super helpful. If you're serious about getting your movie made, this episode's gonna give you a ton to think about — and a real strategy to actually move forward. The High Performance Expo was a big success, and the Kibbe Boys (i.e. Rob and Dallas) got the chance to take in even MOR than just the High Performance Expo itself. Thanks to NHRA Superstar Clay Millicaon and KAFS Show Super Stud Listener (and Hendrick Motorsports employee) Austin Darling we got to visit not one, but TWO NASCAR Shops; Rick Ware Racing thanks to Clay, and Hendrick thanks to Austin! Both were outstanding experiences to get a true inside look at the craft, business, tech, and reality of a NASCAR life. At Hendrick we even got the chance to attend a Bible lesson over lunch AND visit Rick Hendrick's personal car and memorabilia collections. It was nothing short of unbelievable! Austin surprised us with his '68 Newport sitting out front of Hendrick Motorsports, complete with a 440, A/C, steelies, and a tribute name of “Sweet Tilly” in honor of Uncle Jesse's Dukes of Hazzard Season 1 moonshine car. You can follow him on Instagram via @pawpaws_speedshop and on YouTube at Paw Paw's Speedshop as well. . To cut to the chase, if you haven't seen the new Dale Earnhardt docuseries on Amazon Prime yet….you need to. It's an in redible production detailing the true life and drive of Dale Earnhardt, success, flaws, and all. It's told through the eyes of Darrell Waltrip, Dale's racing competitors, and especially his children; Kerry, Dale Jr, and Kelly (his 4th child Taylor is not onscreen). It's a remarkable series, and while you'll leave with respect and awe for the man on the track….you'll have a true lump in your throat about how he lived in life, and what he lived it for. This is not a paid endorsement or review at all, nor is this an affiliate link. This is just our honest take on what is (in our opinion) an outstanding series and worth your money and time! Enjoy. We originally reviewed the Burt Reynolds Classic “Stroker Ace” in Episodes 117 and 118 as well as the month end Patreon show in July of 2019. Enjoy! Movie Summary: This is it! After waiting years to prepare we finally did a full review of the 2005 Dukes of Hazzard movie. This was a $50Million dollar big screen production of our favorite TV show, featuring our favorite car doing the best big screen performance any car has ever performed, ever (we're looking your way, Bullitt). Other than the car…..this isn't the TV series Dukes that you know. Boss Hogg (played by Burt Reynolds) is skinny. Rosco is mean, not goofy. Bo is scared of women. Luke can't drive. Uncle Jesse is crass. But….if you can get past all of that and leave it for what it is, we loved it. Our man Corndog was onsite for the entire filming of the movie in Louisiana and had the full skinny on every car there that played the General Lee (all 27 of them).  ======================================== National Parts Depot Presents: Bernie on the News! https://www.npdlink.com. We originally reviewed the Burt Reynolds Classic "Stroker Ace" in Episode 178 in February of 2021. Enjoy! Movie Recap: If you loved Smokey and the Bandit, Cannonball Run, Police Academy, WKRP, Gomer Pyle: USMC, The Hardy Boys, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, Deliverance, and Days of Thunder….this is like all of them combined, minus ….basically everything from Deliverance except Ned Beaty, and all of the really good stuff from Days of Thunder like Tom Cruise and amazing cinematography with real in car race footage at speed. This movie would be culture cancelled today. Sexual harassment is considered innocent fun, women are ogled, there's (ironically) no drug use, and the confederate flags are a plenty. But when Hal Needham called, Burt Reynolds answered...and made a box office flop that has kept us all clucking and chuckling to this day. Why? Because he was driving the FASTEST CHICKEN IN THE SOUTH.
