Cumbrae The island of Cumbrae, also known as Great Cumbrae, is Scotland's most accessible island. An 8 minute ferry journey from Largs, it has been inhabited since the end of the last ice age, but became popular during the 20th century thanks to the Clyde paddle steamers. The main settlement on Cumbrae is the Victorian seaside town of Millport. Countless visitors take day trips from the mainland to “cycle roond Millport!” Field Studies Council Field Studies Council Millport has a storied history as a marine research station. Now a thriving field centre, it offers accommodation and teaching spaces, making it an excellent base for environmental education and fieldwork. Visitors can head out on the research vessel Actinia to collect scientific samples or go wildlife watching, spotting dolphins, seals, and other marine life. The centre is part of Field Studies Council, a UK charity dedicated to delivering nature courses and environmental education across its 16 centres Millport Golf Club Millport Golf Club is a diverse golf course stretched across the heathland on the highest point of the Island. Founded in 1888, each hole of the club's course has its own unique name - a nod to its long history. The course has views across the Firth of Clyde, down to Ailsa Craig and over to Bute and the looming skyline of Goatfell on Arran. Thank you for listening to the Caledonian MacBrayne podcast. Scottish Island Adventures - Colonsay - with hosts Coinneach Macleod, The Hebridean Baker and singer-songwriter Natalie Galloway. Colonsay Colonsay is an island in the Inner Hebrides located north of Islay and south of Mull. It is accessible by CalMac ferry from both Islay and Oban! Colonsay is connected to a smaller island, Oronsay, on its southern end by a tidal causeway and is a rugged island where the low-lying dune grassland known as Machair produces an array of native wildflowers such as heather and wild thyme and acts as a haven for birds and insects. Colonsay Wool Growers At the very top of Colonsay lies Balnahard Farm, the home of Colonsay Wool Growers. The farm has been in the same family for generations and currently boasts over 400 locally reared wool sheep of varying Hebridean cross-breeds. The sheared wool is dyed naturally with native flora such as bog myrtle, nettle and moss to produce yarns, knitting kits, and limited edition knitwear. Colonsay Gin Colonsay Gin began in 2016 when husband and wife duo Finlay and Eileen Geekie traded the busy life of Oxfordshire for a fresh start on Colonsay. Inspired by Celtic folklore and a love of true juniper gin, they launched Colonsay Gin. Today, their gin is a nod to the wild beauty of the island and the business contributes to the island's sustainability and future development - drawing in visitors for tours and tasting. Colonsay Black Bees Colonsay and Oronsay have a long history of traditional honey use and bee-keeping. The continued practice of native bee-keeping in small isolated pockets helps to protect and sustain the dwindling Black Bee population under threat from imported non-native honey bees, and the changing climate. The other result of the practice happens to be fragrant honey that contains all the notes of the diverse island flora providing pollen for the bees. League defeats are like busses! Hot on the heels of our first Scottish Premiership defeat of the season at Rugby Park, Celtic followed up with an even worse display as they fell 2-0 to Hearts at Celtic Park. It's a game which featured just one of our summer signings (Luis Palma) but not the likes of Gustaf Lagerbielke and Mitchell Frame following the midweek win over Feyenoord. Fret not though, Kwon made the bench! With Tomoki Iwata missing out through injury David Turnbull won this week's midfield tombola, but all will be in the draw once again when next week's game with Livi comes around. Post match Captain Callum McGregor expressed his own concerns regarding the squad as he too called for suitable reinforcements to be drafted in during the January window. Whether we all get our wishes there or not is a different story. Join Tino, James & Paddy as they cover all of the above and much more in this latest episode of The Celtic Exchange Weekly. Now in his third season as Celtic Captain, Callum McGregor is facing the biggest challenge of his leadership as he and his team-mates navigate a tricky start to the campaign. The skipper has more than enough credit in the bank for what he's achieved at the club but by his own high standards he knows he's fallen short in recent weeks and will be driven to put that right as soon as possible. Elsewhere Sead Haksabanovic is in the huff due to a lack of gametime and opted to share his frustrations on social media. Time may already be up for the Montenegran international however and we wait to see if he's still a Celtic player by the weekend. Looking ahead we face a tough trip to Ibrox on Sunday, but could Brendan Rodgers have an option under his nose that he – any most others – won't yet have considered? Celtic skipper Callum McGregor has displayed his incredible commitment to the club by penning a new deal that will keep him at Celtic Park until the summer of 2028. Described by Brendan Rodgers as the “heartbeat” of the team and his “coach on the field” the 30 year old has played a huge part in Celtic's domestic dominance during his time at Celtic Park and following last season's treble success has now claimed 20 major honours. And he's showing no signs of letting up any time soon! Elsewhere team-mates Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda showed their own intent to be part of the Rodgers Revolution by agreeing new 4-year deals of their own. Whilst we're all keen to see new arrivals over the summer it's great business by the club and lays the foundations for what's to follow in Rodgers' second spell as manager. In a bumper week at Holyrood, the debate over the delayed CalMac ferries continues, and the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon pushes back the lifting of face covering restrictions by two weeks in light of rising Covid-19 cases. In Westminster, Partygate is back in the spotlight after the first fines for Downing Street parties are issued by the Met Police. What does this all mean as the cost of living crisis grows and we head into the local elections, and will these pressures on the Scottish and UK Governments be reflected in the polling booths?
Eamonn and Shona are joined by broadcaster and commentator, Afua Hagan. This week - the CalMac ferries contract dispute, Will Smith's divisive Oscars slap, Will and Kate's controversial Caribbean tour and a listener question about compassionate news broadcasting. At the end of the episode, Eamonn, Shona and Afua share their personal media recommendations. The row over the much delayed, and much over budget CalMac ferries has been going on across the Scottish media all week. Lots of claims and counter claims of political spin and bias being thrown around. But Lesley asks if there's a far more fundamental set of problems at the root of the issue which are not being addressed. The UK government has come out ,apparently, swinging on the sacking of 800 P and O seafarers promising strong action of plugging loopholes in employment legislation and calling for P and O's Chief Executive to resign. However, is this just a load of soundbite and fury signifying nothing? The shine seems to have gone off, the heir apparent to No 10,Rishi Sunak. Clunky photo opps and tetchy media appearances have taken the headlines while some outlets seem to have bought into the Tory narrative of tax cuts to support hard pressed low paid workers. We examine the reality of the Spring Budget Statement. We also discuss whether Sunak's fall from from grace is good news for Boris Johnson .The Oscars hit, literally, the front pages with Will Smith's assault on Chris Rock but Lesley's petition on plots of Scottish land being "gifted" in Oscar goody bags got over 8000 signatures in under 2 days. Lash Fary , the founder of Distinctive Assets, the company that provides Academy Award hopefuls with presents before the ceremony, defended the inclusion of a Highland Titles gift as “light-hearted fun”. We reckon there's a lot more to it than that.★ Support this podcast ★

Today's guest pulled out all the stops! Greg Glass is the Master Distiller of Jura, a beloved brand from the Whyte & Mackay portfolio, and not only did he bring a TWENTY-ONE year old whisky, he holds the distinction of being the first and only guest to bring an edible bubble machine. (Be sure to check out our YouTube channel to see Pedro try to catch the bubbles in his mouth.)--What we drank:Jura New Make (11:05)Jura 10 (19:06)Jura Seven Wood (24:48)Jura 18 (33:03)Jura 21 (41:41)--Follow us:spiritguidesocietypodcast.comfacebook.com/spiritguidesoctwitter.com/spiritguidesocinstagram.com/spiritguidesocyoutube.com/c/SpiritGuideSociety/?sub_confirmation=1--About Jura: From WikipediaThe distillery was founded by the Laird of Jura, Archibald Campbell in 1810. The distillery fell into disrepair but was restored in 1884. Around 1900 it was again in disuse and dismantled. In the 1950s two local estate owners Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith keen to revive the local economy had the distillery rebuilt and expanded by the architects Lothian, Barclay, Jarvis & Boys with input from whisky and distillery expert William Delmé-Evans. The work was completed in 1963, and included the installation of taller stills, allowing the distillery to create a mix of malts. The island of Jura is seven miles (11 km) wide and thirty miles (48 km) long and it has only one road, one pub and one distillery. There are seven estates on Jura: Ardfin, Inver, Jura Forest, Ruantallain, Tarbert, Ardlussa, and Barnhill. Less than 200 people live on the island (while it has a red deer population of around 5000). The inhabitants of Jura are known as Diurachs, which is their Gaelic name."Extremely unget-at-able" was how George Orwell described the location of the Isle of Jura in 1946, and it was here in 1948 he completed his novel Nineteen-Eighty-four : the island remains difficult to reach today. Most travellers to Jura go by CalMac car ferry from Kennacraig on the Kintyre Peninsula to Islay, and then cross to Jura from Port Askaig on Islay by the MV Eilean Dhiura, a small vehicle ferry which is run by ASP Ships on behalf of Argyll and Bute Council. Islay can also be reached by air: Islay Airport is served by daily flights from Glasgow. From March to October there is also a passenger ferry from Tayvallich on the west coast of Scotland.--Music by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Mark MacCracken, CEO of CALMAC, talks about the benefits of ice storage in commercial settings. Posted on Feb. 6.
California's plan calling for a massive amount of energy storage poses challenges for utilities that would be required to implement it. Mark MacCracken, CEO of Calmac, a manufacturer of thermal energy storage systems, discusses the technology options available to utilities in this podcast interview with Lisa Cohn of EnergyEfficiencyMarkets.com. "There will be a big learning curve," he says. "We'll see some test projects." Utilities will experience multiple benefits with energy storage under the plan. For example, they could use one energy storage device to help them address power quality and arbitrage.
