With tech giants such as Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle will be instrumental in the future of data and its effects on society. What are the long-term consequences of humanity's recent rush toward digitizing, storing, and analyzing every piece of data about ourselves and the world we live in? How will data surveillance, digital forensics, and AI pose new threats––and opportunities? In their new book, The Secret Life of Data, authors Aram Sinnreich and Jesse Gilbert explore what might happen with all the data that we collect. They build on this basic premise: no matter what form data takes, and what purpose we think it's being used for, data will always have a secret life. They show how this data can be used, by other people in other times and places, and the profound implications for every aspect of our lives––everything from our intimate relationships to our professional lives to our political systems. Sinnreich and Gilbert have interviewed dozens of data experts to explore a broad range of scenarios and contexts. To manage these possibilities, the authors advocate for creating new laws and regulations, ethics and aesthetics, and models of production. In the face of technological uncertainty, Sinnreich and Gilbert invite us to play an active part in shaping how data influences our lives, both here in Seattle, and the world at large. Aram Sinnreich is an author, professor, and musician. He is the Chair of Communication Studies at American University. His books include Mashed Up, The Piracy Crusade, The Essential Guide to Intellectual Property, and A Second Chance for Yesterday (published as R. A. Sinn). Jesse Gilbert is an interdisciplinary artist exploring the intersection of visual art, sound, and software design at his firm Dark Matter Media. He was the founding Chair of the Media Technology department at Woodbury University, and he has taught interactive software design at both CalArts and UC San Diego. Daniela Rosner is a Professor in the Department of Human Centered Design and Engineering (HCDE) at the University of Washington, co-director of the Tactile and Tactical Design Lab, and co-director of the HCDE Masters Program. She holds adjunct appointments in the Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies (GWSS), the Department of Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXArts), and the Allen School for Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). Her work uses modes of design inquiry to examine sites of innovation practice and performance historically elided by technology cultures. What is data, and why does it matter for us to care about the data traces we leave behind? What are the implications for our lives of how this data is used by other people in other times and places? In a conversation with Joanne Kuai, authors Aram Sinnreich and Jesse Gilbert introduce their new book and talk about how we can rethink our relationship with data and stay informed to make better decisions in the face of technological uncertainty. In their latest book, The Secret Life of Data: Navigating Hype and Uncertainty in The Age of Algorithmic Surveillance (MIT Press, 2024), Aram Sinnreich and Jesse Gilbert explore the many unpredictable and often surprising ways in which data surveillance, AI, and the constant presence of algorithms impact our culture and society in the age of global networks. The book focuses primarily on the long-term consequences of humanity's recent rush toward digitizing, storing, and analyzing every piece of data about ourselves and the world we live in. The authors advocate for “slow fixes” regarding our relationship to data, such as creating new laws and regulations, ethics and aesthetics, and models of production for our datafied society. Aram Sinnreich is an author, professor, and musician. He is Chair of Communication Studies at American University. As fresh algorithms and new analytical methods emerge, existing datasets can uncover insights beyond their original purpose. Regardless of their intended use, data often possess hidden potentials and always have a “secret life”. “How this data will be used, by other people in other times and places, has profound implications for every aspect of our lives—from our intimate relationships to our professional lives to our political systems”, argue Professor Aram Sinnreich and Jesse Gilbert in their new book “The Secret Life of Data: Navigating Hype and Uncertainty in the Age of Algorithmic Surveillance”. This phenomenon raises various moral, ethical, and legal questions: Should we use datasets for unexpected and unforeseen insights? Should we create new frameworks to control and regulate using datasets for purposes beyond their original intent? Ignoring opportunities to analyse data in new ways might limit their potential, but pursuing them introduces ethical dilemmas. In this episode of Bridging the Gaps, I speak with Professor Aram Sinnreich and Jesse Gilbert. Aram Sinnreich is an author, professor, and musician. He is Chair of Communication Studies at American University. Jesse Gilbert is an interdisciplinary artist exploring the intersection of visual art, sound, and software design at his firm Dark Matter Media. He was the founding Chair of the Media Technology department at Woodbury University. I begin the conversation by setting the stage for our listeners and delving into the idea of the "secret life of data" as discussed in the book. We then delve deeper into the nature and scale of the challenge posed by this phenomenon. One key point highlighted in the book is that the challenge is primarily conceptual—we're uncertain about what exactly we're aiming to control, handle, and regulate. We thoroughly explore this aspect. To address this "conceptual challenge," the book provides a comprehensive overview of various frameworks and approaches that have been developed and are currently utilised to tackle similar challenges. The book then extends these concepts to envision and propose a framework that could aid us in addressing this particular challenge. We discuss in detail a number of existing frameworks outlined in the book, and then explore the possibilities to address these emerging challenges. Overall, this conversation has been immensely interesting and enlightening. Complement this discussion with “Dark Data: Why What You Don't Know Matters” with Professor David Handavailable at: https://www.bridgingthegaps.ie/2020/03/dark-data-why-what-you-dont-know-matters-with-professor-david-hand/ And then listen to Reclaiming Human Intelligence and “How to Stay Smart in a Smart World” with Prof. Gerd Gigerenzer available at: https://www.bridgingthegaps.ie/2023/04/reclaiming-human-intelligence-and-how-to-stay-smart-in-a-smart-world-with-prof-gerd-gigerenzer/

Introduction Have you run into people who seem just a bit too nice? They are so accommodating and non-confrontational that you're not sure exactly what they think? There's a lot of smiling and nodding, but little healthy opposition, so there isn't much in the way of innovation and meaningful improvements. Nobody wants to rock the boat, so it becomes a go-along-to-get-along situation. There really aren't any moments of excitement or exhilaration in these nice, plain vanilla worlds. Just as we analyze the impacts of our food and energy use, equally important is understanding from where our clothes originate, their environmental and social impacts, and how to dispose of them in an environmentally responsible manner. According to a 2017 Ellen MacArthur Foundation report, every second on this planet, the equivalent of a garbage truck full of clothing and textiles is landfilled or burned. On this show we interview Karri Ann Frerichs, CEO and Founder of Circular Fashion LA [http://www.circularfashionla.com/] whose mission is to give new life and add more value to clothing and to help customers keep loving the clothes they already own for much longer. Circular fashion moves away from single use products and services that don't reflect the true cost of an item; spoiler there is no such thing as a truly $10 t-shirt. Circular fashion is a system where the design of our clothing and personal belongings considers both the production of an item and the end of its life as of equal importance. It rethinks the linear “take-make-dispose” model and instead asks the industry to prioritize responsible materials, manufacturing, labor, use, and end-of-life for every garment. Karri Ann Frerichs has been a fashion industry entrepreneur and innovator since 2008, working in retail management, wholesale distribution, brand development and apparel manufacturing, with a focus on zero-waste, regenerative product development. She has taught the Business of Fashion to university students since 2010 and in her current position at Woodbury University, has also spearheaded the addition of Circular Economy curriculum since 2019. In 2020, she became an Ellen MacArthur Foundation Circular Economy Pioneer and mentor to the From Linear to Circular Programme, and also launched the Los Angeles Chapter of the Circular Economy Club. In partnership with the National Building Museum, AIP Podcast hosts a series of deep dive conversations from the Intersections series. This is a re-broadcast of a conversation with Demar Matthews. Founder of OffTop Design, Matthews will open the season with a presentation that addresses how architecture amplifies or silences perspectives and narratives and question if and how buildings, streets and landscapes serve to affirm identity and define community. Matthews' practice investigates the power of architecture as a cultural signifier and vehicle of traditions, values and identity. In this episode, we explore the question,“What if Black neighborhoods were defined by the beauty of the architecture that represents Black culture?” In Fall 2022, the National Building Museum is bringing together leading Black voices in design, art, and architecture for INTERSECTIONS, a series of dynamic discussions about culture, equity and representation through the lens of design. Launching September 16th and running through December 14th, Intersections engages nationally recognized Black architects, designers and artists in conversations focused on social justice in the built environment. Through interactive lectures and hands-on workshops, this series is designed to provoke new thinking, spark conversation, enlighten and empower. Born in Moreno Valley, California, Demar received his Bachelor's from HBCU Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, and completed his Master of Architecture at Woodbury University where he was awarded the Graduate Thesis Prize for his project Black Architecture: Unearth-ing the Black Aesthetic. His introduction to the field was through his article ‘A Black Architecture Education Experience'. Demar believes architecture and good design should not only be for the privileged. Every community deserves to be proud of the built environment around them, and the built environment around them should be based on the cultures of the people who live there; regardless of income, race, and gender.

Its programs are recovery-focused, clinically effective, and designed in partnership with local, county, state, and other behavioral health organizations.  Previously, Kate worked as a Job Captain, Architectural Associate, and Architectural Designer for Pacific Design Group and Weston Miles Architects. She holds a bachelor's degree in architecture, conceptual design, and urban development from Woodbury University.  In this episode… According to Kate Peevey, your environment has a big impact on your mental health development. That's why she's working to provide services, programs, and healthy environments that will help individuals — and the community — grow. However, Kate's role in facilities management comes with its challenges. So, how is she navigating these obstacles to help the community thrive? Through Telecare, a mental health service provider, Kate designs home-like, barrier-free facilities that allow a diverse group of individuals to feel comfortable. When the pandemic came along, Kate and her team had to create spaces that supported social distancing practices while still making patients feel at ease. Even in 2021, Kate, along with many other facilities managers, face difficulty getting the items and tools necessary to complete their jobs — but this won't stop her from designing spaces to aid Telecare's customers. Kate says that the industry is always changing, and in order to keep up, you have to continue to learn and say yes to new challenges and opportunities.  In this episode of Watching Paint Dry, Greg Owens is joined by Kate Peevey, Manager of Facilities and Real Estate Services for Telecare. Together, they discuss how Kate is helping individuals improve their mental health through the facilities management industry. Kate talks about her role at Telecare, the importance of strengthening relationships within the community, and how you can get your career started in facilities management. Stay tuned!

Demar is the founder and Principal of OffTop Design.  He also works with A+D Architecture + Design Museum in Los Angeles as a curator and exhibitions associate.  Demar received his Bachelor's from HBCU Lincoln University of PA, and his Master's of Architecture at Woodbury University where he was awarded the Graduate Thesis Prize for his project Black Architecture: Unearthing the Black Aesthetic.  Demar believes architecture and good design should not only be for the privileged and feels that, "every community deserves to be proud of the built environment around them, and that this environment should be based on the cultures of the people who live there; regardless of income, race, and gender."Support the show (https://donorbox.org/celestial-citizen)

Barnes' research and design practice investigates the connection between architecture and identity, examining architecture's social and political agency through historical research and design speculation. Learning from historical data and perspectives from within architecture as well as cultural and ethnic studies, he examines how the built environment influences the social and cultural experience. Born in Chicago, IL Germane Barnes received a Bachelor's of Science in Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Architecture from Woodbury University where he was awarded the Thesis Prize for his project Symbiotic Territories: Architectural Investigations of Race, Identity, and Community. He believes strongly in design as a process, and approaches each condition imposed on a project as an opportunity rather than a constraint. Architecture presents opportunities for transformation – materially, conceptually and sociologically. Currently he  is an Assistant Professor and the Director of The Community Housing & Identity Lab (CHIL) at the University of Miami School of Architecture, a testing ground for the physical and theoretical investigations of architecture's social and political resiliency. In the episode we talk about his background, where he comes from and what experiences he had that made him think architecture was the best career to pursue for him. He tells me about the time he got arrested in his very own front porch, because he "fit a description of a black guy that had stolen some shoes," and he also tells me about the constant discrimination that he was faced with by his veryy own professors at his undergraduate school. We then talk about his trip to Cape Town, South Africa, where he did pro-bono work for low income families, which changed his whole understanding of architecture completely. We then talk about where he is at now, fighting against racial discrimination in the most violent neighborhoods of Miami, Florida.   --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

(Click the photos for more information!) Laura Thurman- Nashville Design with LA Flair Today in The Lounge, Nick chats with Laura Thurman of Thuman Design Studio. Learn about Laura's pathway to design, her transition from LA to Nashville, and how she harnesses the power of networking and social media to grow her interior design business. Pathway to Design Originally from LA, Laura Thurman moved to Nashville, TN five years ago. As a child, she enjoyed painting, drawing, dancing and re-arranging her bedroom furniture. These interests ultimately lead to her future career as an Interior Designer. After receiving her degree in Interior Architecture from Woodbury University, Laura began freelancing as a graphic designer in LA, before landing a job with a commercial furniture dealer.  While working in commercial sales she learned how form and function plays a crucial role in product selection and how to think both ergonomically and spatially. After working in commercial sales Laura went on to work for local residential interior design firms before venturing out to start her own business. The Business Today Before starting her own business, Laura spent six months developing her business cards, website, logo and resource library so she was prepared to go out on her own. Now after three years in business, she feels more established. Today, about  50% of her business is working with builders and developers making new construction product selections and the rest is working with the custom residential client. Her workload typically comes in batches of about 4-5 projects at a time. Laura attributes the power of networking as a key to her success. Laura decided to join a BNI  professional networking group, which she attributes to helping her learn how to present herself to people. She has also found networking success through Linked In, and by simply reaching out. A fellow design colleague introduced her to Universal Furniture whom she collaborated with on a video series focusing on the behind the scene world of designers. Laura recommends using collaborations and partnerships and to think outside of the box to get your idea sponsored in a way that equally benefits both parties. In addition to networking opportunities, Laura is also very active on Houzz. Houzz has generated some quality leads for her business. To be successful at Houzz, be timely with your response to inquiries. As Houzz may not work for everyone, Thumbtack offers a similar platform. Showing up to industry events has also been a key element to help grow her business. Next up, Laura will be attending the Design Bloggers Conference for the first time. Although a smaller venue than some of the other design shows, The Design Bloggers Conference attendees represent some of the biggest movers and shakers in the industry. https://entrearchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/dannycerezo.png ()It's June and all month long we here at EntreArchitect are focusing our content on the category of Technology. On the blog, here on the podcast and inside https://entrearchitect.com/academy (EntreArchitect Academy) we are diving deep into the many technologies we can use to make our architecture firms run more efficiently and more effectively. This week Mark R. LePage invited the co-founder of a relatively new firm to join us to discuss the many technologies that he is using to launch his small firm. Architect Danny Cerezo is on the show and he and Mark discussed Successful Technologies for an Architect StartUp. Danny Cerezo is based in Los Angeles, CA and is the principal and co-founder at c|s design. After spending time in service with the Navy, Danny worked for a developer near Palm Springs. He attended Woodbury University in San Diego and graduated with a Masters in Real Estate Development geared for and taught by architects, following that up with working to earn his general contractor’s license. After finishing and selling some projects, creating relationships and getting requests for architecture work on the side, he and his wife, Pam, formed c|s design. What technologies are you using in your firm? Design Software // Whatever’s best for the task at hand. For renovation and addition projects, https://www.chiefarchitect.com (Chief Architect). Primarily for design they use http://www.autodesk.com/products/revit-family/overview (Revit), but are considering switching to http://www.graphisoft.com/archicad/ (ArchiCad) as Mac users. Project Management // For overall project management, http://trello.com (Trello) for the big picture to create systems, project templates, and identify steps for each phase. For detailed task management, http://todoist.com (ToDoist). http://evernote.com (Evernote) to easily scan documents, record audio, organize, search and share files for each project. “If anybody’s not using EverNote, I would say pause the podcast right now, go download it and then come back. It’s fantastic.“ Danny also uses a smart pen called http://store.livescribe.com/moleskine (Livescribe) that’s digitally connected so that every page from the notebook automatically gets uploaded to Evernote. Accounting // http://freshbooks.com/architect (FreshBooks) for the ease of use and its robustness where clients can come in to check retainers, invoices received and paid, expenses and track time. http://quickbooks.com (QuickBooks) as a preference for their accountant, who’s then able to check their work. In order to avoid doing the work twice, a http://zapier.com (Zapier) account integrates the two softwares. Communication // Primarily using email but considering using http://slack.com (Slack) to capture all the information in one repository. Mobile Apps // http://dropbox.com (Dropbox) as a server. Social media apps like http://www.morpholioapps.com (Morpholio) to share creative ideas and https://www.squarespace.com (SquareSpace) to host their website.
