How do you fix the disconnect between work and learning? In this episode of Work in Progress, I'm joined by Taylor McLemore, entrepreneur and founder of the Human Potential Summit, and Ryan Stowers, senior vice president of Stand Together and the executive director of the Charles Koch Foundation, organizations that were founding sponsors of the summit. In this conversation from the Human Potential Summit, held in Denver this fall, McLemore and Stowers share their concerns about the state of our current work and learning systems. McLemore describes it as more broken than functional and says education and careers have become disconnected. Stowers agrees, adding that we need to address this disconnect now in order to unleash the human potential in everyone. Both agree it is crucial for economic mobility, democracy, and global competitiveness. In the podcast, we talk about the role employers must play in fixing the system, including a deeper investment in training and developing the workforce. Helping people develop their human potential and find purpose and dignity in their work is also an imperative for the society. Educated at Christendom College, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Oxford, he is the founder of the PC Humanities Forum and Humanities Reading Seminars and is responsible for the strategic development of the Humanities Program into a vibrant, world class center of teaching, research, and cultural life dedicated to the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. His scholarly interests include the history of ethics (especially St. Thomas Aquinas), applied ethics (especially medical ethics and the ethics of architecture), Alexis de Tocqueville, and philosophy and literature (especially Catholic aesthetics). His work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Templeton Foundation, the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, and the Charles Koch Foundation. His essays have appeared in various journals and collections including The Thomist, International Journal of Applied Philosophy, and The Anthem Companion to Tocqueville. He is the editor of Beyond the Self: Virtue Ethics and the Problem of Culture and is currently working on a monograph titled The Lover and the Prophet: An Essay in Catholic Aesthetics. He joined Providence College in 2011 and lives just across the street with his wife Dominique and their five children.

Earlier this month, as the Omicron variant began to spread, a small liberal arts school on a tree-lined campus in Michigan called Hillsdale College announced it was launching an Academy for Science and Freedom to “educate the American people about the free exchange of scientific ideas and the proper relationship between freedom and science in the pursuit of truth.” The academy was inspired by the pandemic. “As we reflect on the worst public health fiasco in history, our pandemic response has unveiled serious issues with how science is administered,” noted the college president in a press release. But the venture isn't exactly an effort to apply science to the Covid-19 crisis. The so-called “fiasco” was government pandemic measures like mask and vaccine mandates, contact tracing, and lockdowns. Hillsdale is a conservative Christian institution with ties to the Trump administration. And the scholars behind the academy — Scott Atlas, Jay Bhattacharya, and Martin Kulldorff — are connected to right-wing dark money attacking public health measures. The trio also has ties to the Great Barrington Declaration, a widely-rebuked yet influential missive that encouraged governments to adopt a “herd immunity” policy letting Covid-19 spread largely unchecked. The new academy appears to be the latest effort to provide intellectual cover to a nearly two-year campaign by right-wing and big business interests to force a return to normalcy to boost corporate profits amid a pandemic that is now surging once again thanks to Omicron. This is the story of how that corporate-bankrolled campaign succeeded in supplanting public health experts and hijacking governmental response to the pandemic. The War On Public Health When COVID began its spread across the United States in early March 2020, states responded by locking down to varying extents. All 24 Democratic governors and 19 of the 26 Republican governors issued weeks-long stay-at-home orders and restrictions on non-essential businesses. Lockdown measures drove down cases in the U.S. and likely saved millions of lives globally. But the decline of in-person shopping and work, combined with factory shutdowns in places like China, disrupted the economy. A 2020 report from the corporate consulting firm McKinsey & Co. found the hardest-hit industries would take years to recover. One sector in particular that took a big hit was the fossil fuel industry. Oil demand fell sharply in 2020, placing the global economy on uncertain footing. Before long, business-aligned groups — particularly those connected to fossil fuels — began targeting the public health measures threatening their bottom lines. Chief among them were groups tied to billionaire Charles Koch, owner of Koch Industries, the largest privately held fossil fuel company in the world. The war on public health measures began on March 20, 2020, when Americans For Prosperity (AFP), the right-wing nonprofit founded by Charles and David Koch, issued a press release calling on states to remain open. “We can achieve public health without depriving the people most in need of the products and services provided by businesses across the country,” it read. A month later, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a business lobbying group partially funded by Koch Industries, published a letter calling on President Donald Trump to enable states to reopen. That letter was signed by over 200 state legislators and “stakeholders,” including leaders from Koch-funded groups like the Texas Public Policy Foundation and the James Madison Institute. To fight its war, the Koch network also relied on the astroturf roadmap behind the anti-government Tea Party movement, using its dark money apparatus to coordinate anti-lockdown protests. Participants for a number of anti-lockdown rallies were recruited by FreedomWorks, a dark money group tied to Charles Koch instrumental in organizing Tea Party protests in 2009. Several of the 2020 rallies were also promoted by the Convention of States Action, a group founded by an organization with ties to the Koch network and hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer that wants to rewrite the U.S. Constitution. In Michigan, a major event was organized by the Michigan Freedom Fund, a nonprofit funded by the family of Trump's secretary of education, Betsy DeVos. Groups funded by the Kochs and their colleagues also turned to a more insidious form of combat adapted from Tea Party strategies: building an academic and intellectual network that would create and promote its own “science” to attack COVID mitigation policies. “Build Up Immunity… Through Natural Infection” On October 4, 2020, the Great Barrington Declaration was released to the world. Authored by Stanford University professor Jay Bhattacharya, former Harvard Medical School professor Martin Kulldorff, and Oxford University professor Sunetra Gupta, the declaration recommended governments allow younger, healthier people to become infected with Covid-19 while reserving “focused protection” for the vulnerable, in order to reach herd immunity. Suggestions included having nursing homes limit staff rotations and businesses rely on workers with “acquired immunity.” “The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection,” read the declaration. The document boasted a veneer of academic legitimacy. Its credentialed authors wrote the letter at a conference hosted by the auspicious-sounding American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. According to the declaration's website, the letter has since been signed by more than 2,700 “Medical and Public Health Scientists,” and “none of the authors or co-signers received any money, honoraria, stipend, or salary from anyone.” But the declaration arose out of the world of right-wing dark money and corporate interests, and many of its signatories aren't verified. AIER, which hosted and filmed the conference and registered the declaration's website, is a Koch-tied libertarian think tank. From 2018 to 2020, the Charles Koch Foundation donated more than $100,000 to the institute. And before that, the Koch Foundation donated nearly $1.5 million to the Emergent Order Foundation, formerly Emergent Order LLC, a PR firm that engaged in hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of marketing consulting for AIER. AIER has also received $54,000 from the Atlas Network, an anti-regulation group formerly known as the Atlas Economic Research Foundation that has received more than a half million dollars from the Charles Koch Foundation and the connected Charles Koch Institute. The Atlas Network also pocketed nearly $3.9 million from DonorsTrust, a dark money fund connected to wealthy right-wing donors such as Koch and Mercer, and its sister group, Donors Capital Fund. In exchange, AIER has provided fellowships to academics in several Koch-funded programs. That includes economist Peter Boettke, the former president of the Mont Pelerin Society, of which Charles Koch has been a member, and Michael Munger, an adjunct scholar at the Koch-backed Cato Institute. AIER's trustees include Benjamin Powell, director of the Free Market Institute at Texas Tech University, which has received millions from the Koch network. Powell is known for his defense of sweatshops. Bhattacharya, co-author of the Great Barrington Declaration, is a former research fellow at the Hoover Institution, which received $430,000 from Charles Koch's foundation between 2017 and 2018, as well as $1.4 million from the dark money fund DonorsTrust from 2016 to 2020. Groups funded by the Kochs and their colleagues also turned to a more insidious form of combat adapted from Tea Party strategies: building an academic and intellectual network that would create and promote its own “science” to attack COVID mitigation policies. “Build Up Immunity… Through Natural Infection” On October 4, 2020, the Great Barrington Declaration was released to the world. Authored by Stanford University professor Jay Bhattacharya, former Harvard Medical School professor Martin Kulldorff, and Oxford University professor Sunetra Gupta, the declaration recommended governments allow younger, healthier people to become infected with Covid-19 while reserving “focused protection” for the vulnerable, in order to reach herd immunity. Suggestions included having nursing homes limit staff rotations and businesses rely on workers with “acquired immunity.” “The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection,” read the declaration. The document boasted a veneer of academic legitimacy. Its credentialed authors wrote the letter at a conference hosted by the auspicious-sounding American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. According to the declaration's website, the letter has since been signed by more than 2,700 “Medical and Public Health Scientists,” and “none of the authors or co-signers received any money, honoraria, stipend, or salary from anyone.” But the declaration arose out of the world of right-wing dark money and corporate interests, and many of its signatories aren't verified. AIER, which hosted and filmed the conference and registered the declaration's website, is a Koch-tied libertarian think tank. From 2018 to 2020, the Charles Koch Foundation donated more than $100,000 to the institute. And before that, the Koch Foundation donated nearly $1.5 million to the Emergent Order Foundation, formerly Emergent Order LLC, a PR firm that engaged in hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of marketing consulting for AIER. AIER has also received $54,000 from the Atlas Network, an anti-regulation group formerly known as the Atlas Economic Research Foundation that has received more than a half million dollars from the Charles Koch Foundation and the connected Charles Koch Institute. The Atlas Network also pocketed nearly $3.9 million from DonorsTrust, a dark money fund connected to wealthy right-wing donors such as Koch and Mercer, and its sister group, Donors Capital Fund. In exchange, AIER has provided fellowships to academics in several Koch-funded programs. That includes economist Peter Boettke, the former president of the Mont Pelerin Society, of which Charles Koch has been a member, and Michael Munger, an adjunct scholar at the Koch-backed Cato Institute. AIER's trustees include Benjamin Powell, director of the Free Market Institute at Texas Tech University, which has received millions from the Koch network. Powell is known for his defense of sweatshops. Bhattacharya, co-author of the Great Barrington Declaration, is a former research fellow at the Hoover Institution, which received $430,000 from Charles Koch's foundation between 2017 and 2018, as well as $1.4 million from the dark money fund DonorsTrust from 2016 to 2020. My guest on this episode of Work in Progress is Ryan Stowers, the executive director of the Charles Koch Foundation (CKF), a philanthropy whose mission is to remove barriers that prevent people from reaching their potential. One of their key focus areas is education and their role in preparing us for the workforce. Stowers cites cost and inflexibility as two of the biggest barriers standing in the way of Americans getting the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their careers. He says given the dynamic nature of the economy—and our potential to be lifelong learners and to quickly pivot to new career opportunities—postsecondary education needs to adjust. Yet, he says, "Most of the conversation when it comes to innovation and trying to drive change focuses on 18-to-22 year olds, the current system, and the status quo. We think that that needs to fundamentally change," says Stowers. "It needs to innovate in a way where all learners have the opportunity to engage within a system in a highly individualized way, (one) that allows them to discover, develop, and deploy knowledge and skills based on who they are." Stowers adds he thinks the learner's voice isn't taken into account enough and offers up a couple examples from a Charles Koch Foundation survey released in September. Seventy-two percent of the people surveyed express a preference for an option other than a four-year college or university. Sixty-two percent say they believe there will be heightened demand for online classes because they are cheaper and offer more flexibility. CKF is hoping to drive the change in higher education by supporting social change entrepreneurs that are coming up with those solutions which will expand pathways that are "high-quality, individualized, and relevant to opportunities of the 21st century." Stowers and I also spoke about the ultimate goal of the philanthropy: unlocking a person's potential which also allows them to find purpose in their lives. "We think that the best way to find purpose in work is what we call mutual benefit. If people can figure out a way to add value in people's lives—including their own—by creating products and services that make people's lives better, or doing work that makes someone else's life better, then that is mutual benefit. That relationship can give significant purpose and meaning to a person's life." In this episode of Illuminate Higher Education, N2N Services CEO Kiran Kodithala speaks with Ryan Stowers, Charles Koch Foundation's Executive Director.Ryan kicks things off by outlining a core issue in our higher education system, which is that it's severely outdated. As it stands, only one-third of students at four-year institutions believe that they'll graduate with the skills and knowledge to be successful in the workplace. This illustrates an obvious area of opportunity, which can start with collectively changing the way we think and act about the role higher education plays in our lives.For example, we may need to move away from education solely as a function of seat time, credit hours, or degrees. Instead, we need a significant shift towards an individualized approach, honing in on a specific learner's aptitudes, passions, and interests. This week I’ve delved into the archives again. This particular speaker is a bit of a clever chap. He has actually done 3 main stage TED talks and has got a brain the size of a planet. When he speaks, he says “I want the audience to go away knowing less after I’ve spoken than they did before I spoke”. At first, I thought this was crazy, but he’s a very clever man and what he is saying is that people need to be asking better questions, so when they come away from hearing him, they will be asking better questions because better questions lead to better answers and in this time of this uncertainty, that is so important. My guest is neuroscientist, Beau Lotto. Beau Lotto’s aim is to use the principles of perception to enable individuals and organisations to adapt to an increasingly uncertain world. Dr. Beau Lotto is a Professor of Neuroscience, author and entrepreneur. He is a three-time main stage TED speaker (with over 7,000,000 views). He is author of two books: Why We See What We Do’, and ‘Deviate: The Science of Seeing Differently’. He has spoken at the G8, Google’s Zeitgest, Wired and contributed to many television and radio documentaries by the BBC, National Geographic, Netflix and PBS. Jennifer Doleac’s thread on Twitter Working on criminal justice topics gives me a very different perspective on the Kochs than my equally-liberal friends & family have. Charles Koch Foundation & Charles Kock Institute are perhaps the most important funders of research related to criminal justice policy & reform. They also frequently host conferences that bring top-notch researchers and practitioners together in one room — a chance to meet everyone else who’s working in this space. In other words, they throw great parties — sounds trivial but this is super important & helpful! Charles Koch Foundation has funded my own work related to prisoner reentry and I am deeply grateful for that as well as their broader support of my research. My contacts there & Charles Kock Institute are the first I call if I’m looking for practioner contacts. They know everyone! As funders they are extremely hands-off — to a degree that is almost funny. I think they know people are watching them closely for missteps so are super careful. But most funders in this space have strong opinions abt what you should study & what you should find. They don’t. Koch Industries for a long time was a major proponent of Ban the Box policies. When my research on BTB (which they did not fund) came out, showing detrimental effects, they were eager to hear about it & engage w the results. I really appreciated that. To my fellow liberals that love to hate the Koch brothers, I simply say: the story is more complicated (as always, right?). Jonathan Pie is the stage name of hack comedian Tom Walker - whose shtick involves pretending to be angry, generally about feminism, anti-racism, or some other basically benevolent force - and his writing partner, right-wing extremist Andrew Doyle, a columnist for the Charles Koch Foundation-funded hub of reactionary contrarianism, Spiked Online. In this episode, we review Jonathan Pie's American Pie, his one-off special for the BBC, while his latest stand-up show (which also aired on the BBC) plays muted on the TV in front of us. Given Jonathan Pie's unwavering anti-no-platforming stance, we have elected to replace all Jonathan Pie material we would have featured to illustrate our points with equally apposite clips from the films of Clint Eastwood.
Free speech is a core tenet of our democratic and academic systems. But as in politics, universities are increasingly under siege by large donors carrying bags of cash. What do billions of dollars entitle you to? Does it entitle you to shape what is taught and researched at a public university? How can you tell when or if ideology is subverting core institutional values? These are the questions at the heart of controversies over the Charles Koch Foundation donating millions of dollars to US universities. The spirit of the questions also applies to other billionaires making donations like Phil Knight or George Soros, but the Charles Koch Foundation has stirred more controversy in part because of the lack of transparency around many of these donations and the strings that have come attached to the money, such as influence in faculty hiring, scholarship and fellowship awards, and curriculum decisions. They've also drawn attention because some feel that the far-right ideology of Koch funded “university-based research centers” may be itself be so extreme as to cast doubt on the scholarly validity of the research it produces and teaches. We'll be talking mainly about George Mason University today. GMU is a public university in northern VA that has received $95.5 million of that $142 million donated by Charles Koch Foundation since 2005. On Tuesday, April 24 a student group on campus, Transparent GMU went to trial against the GMU and their fundraising arm, The George Mason University Foundation to release documents under the FOIA. While that case is still undecided, documents detailing the donor agreements were released, providing us with direct evidence that the Kochs dictated hiring and other academic policies, which GMU is now admitting. Using Economic Mechanisms to Achieve Foreign Policy Objectives with Francis Skrobiszewski Former Vice President, Polish-American Enterprise Fund Former Senior Vice President, Hungarian-American Enterprise Fund About the lecture: Dr. Skrobiszewski will compare and contrast what the USG did in support of transformation of post-Soviet Central and Eastern Europe with other rebuilding initiatives, with a focus on the Enterprise Fund model. He will touch on post-WWII Western Europe's Marshall Plan, and Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti and other recent initiatives, with which he has had some direct experience. He will talk about fundamentally what works and what doesn't as general principles, the need for a strategy that properly defines the problem and the objectives, and the need for understanding tactically how to adapt approaches proven elsewhere to local conditions and realities. This lecture is part of a series on Economics and Foreign Policy sponsored by the Charles Koch Foundation. About the speaker: Engaged for the past 25 years in transformation initiatives of former Soviet Bloc countries, Skrobiszewski has been actively engaged in development of economic mechanisms to achieve foreign policy objectives. Upon the collapse of Communism in Poland in 1989, President Bush called Skrobiszewski to The White House to discuss strategy for rebuilding the Polish economy and, on the weekend the Berlin Wall fell, to meet Lech Walesa. Subsequently, Skrobiszewski drafted the business plan for the $240 million Polish-American Enterprise Fund (PAEF) -- the first of pioneering direct equity funds capitalized by the US Government to "jump-start" local private sector businesses and to build the institutional foundation for free market economies in "post-Soviet" Central and Eastern Europe. Over the next 15 years, Skrobiszewski served initially as Vice President of PAEF, and later as Senior Vice President of the $60 million Hungarian-American Enterprise Fund (HAEF). Concurrently, he was a director of a Polish Mass Privatization Fund comprised of +500 State-owned enterprises. After conceiving and managing HAEF's high-tech Venture Capital fund, Skrobiszewski was appointed to the Investment Committee of a $300 million fund-of-funds financing new high-tech VC firms in Poland. Skrobiszewski was born in Portsmouth, Virginia and raised in a nearby Polish farming community. After studies at University of Vienna, he graduated in Economics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. During military service, he obtained his Master's degree from University of Southern California in Systems Management. After international law studies in Paris, he received a Juris Doctorate from University of Virginia School of Law. Skrobiszewski practiced law in San Francisco prior to service during the Reagan Administration at the US Environmental Protection Agency, from which he was seconded to the President's Council on Management Improvement. Skrobiszewski has spoken widely on the role of financing in stimulating private business development to support reconstruction. He served 5 years on the Board of Afghan-American Chamber of Commerce, and has advised on such funds designed for Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Palestine, Ghana, Cuba and Haiti, as well as for specialized funds in Central Asia, Armenia, Georgia, Serbia, and most recently, Swaziland.

Kinsella on Liberty Podcast, Episode 037. [Transcript.] I spoke last weekend at one of the best events I've ever been part of: the "Liberty in the Pines" (facebook event) conference at Stephen F. Austin State University, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Sponsored by the Young Americans for Liberty chapter and the Charles Koch Foundation, this one-day event brought together liberty-lovers of all stripes from surrounding areas. My speech was "Locke’s Big Mistake: How the Labor Theory of Property Ruined Political Theory." Stefan Molyneux and Jeff Tucker appeared and delivered speeches as well (with Jeff's inspiring keynote resulting in a resounding standing ovation). Walter Block conducted an "Ask a Libertarian" Q&A session (remotely), and relative newcomer Jessica Hughes delivered a surprisingly radical and resounding speech on "The Constitution of Faux Authority." [Update: See Liberty in the Pines Roundup.] This podcast episode includes my speech and Q&A (about 54 minutes) plus the panel Q&A (about another 50 minutes). The panel Q&A touched on issues like peaceful parenting, spanking, and so on. Not to toot my own horn, but I know I have a lot of a/v material out there, so I do believe this speech of mine is one of the most important I've ever done.
