Kansas City wasted a 4-0 lead and dropped to 0-15 in games started by Jordan Lyles, who allowed three runs and six hits in six-plus innings. He is 0-11, the most losses in the major leagues, and he broke the team record for winless starts at the start of a season, which had been set by Vida Blue in 1983.  Zach McKinstry started the comeback with a fifth-inning RBI double that went through left fielder Edward Olivares’s legs, allowing Jake Rogers to score from first.  Miguel Cabrera singled and Jonathan Schoop doubled, chasing Lyles in the seventh. Cubs 8, Pirates 0 – Surging Cubs race past reeling Pirates 8-0 to spoil touted prospect Henry Davis’ MLB debut Drew Smyly gave up three hits in five innings and the surging Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-0. Smyly (7-4) worked around five walks to win his second straight start following a three-game losing streak. Mike Tauchman finished with three hits and drove in three runs for Chicago. Dansby Swanson added two hits as Chicago spoiled the major-league debut of highly touted Pirates prospect Henry Davis. Davis, the top pick in the 2021 draft, doubled in his first major-league at-bat but couldn’t stop the Pirates from losing their seventh straight. Rangers 5, White Sox 2 – Jung hits 15th homer, Rangers hang on to beat White Sox 5-2 Rookie Josh Jung hit his 15th home run, Jonah Heim had a late two-run single and the Texas Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2. Heim broke open a 3-2 game with a two-run single in the seventh. Andrew Heaney pitched neatly into the sixth after struggling in his previous three starts. The Athletic reported that Green would opt out. Green would have to notify the Warriors of his decision by June 30. NBA – Victor Wembanyama arrives in US from France ahead of Thursday’s NBA draft Victor Wembanyama has arrived in the U.S. for the NBA draft. The plane carrying Wembanyama from France arrived at Newark International Airport outside of New York City on Monday. He’s widely expected to be the No. 1 pick on Thursday by the San Antonio Spurs. Some fans knew what flight he was on and when the plane was landing, and many were waiting. Wembanyama cheerfully signed autographs, scrawling his name onto basketballs and Spurs jerseys before making his way into a waiting vehicle. NBA – Suns continue whirlwind of change under new owner Mat Ishbia Mat Ishbia’s five-month tenure as the new owner of the Phoenix Suns has produced a whirlwind of change. Nobody seems completely safe as the Michigan native continues his quest to deliver Phoenix its first NBA title. The aggressive owner oversaw his latest big move Sunday, when the Suns put together the framework for a trade that would send 12-time All-Star Chris Paul, Landry Shamet and other compensation to the Washington Wizards in exchange for three-time All-Star Bradley Beal. More moves could be on the horizon. The aim is to create more interest in the sport even if just at a casual level. Golf – Tom Watson is the latest to want answers on the PGA/LIV deal Eight-time major champion Tom Watson is the latest to want answers on the PGA Tour’s new business partnership with Saudi backers of LIV Golf. He has sent a letter to PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan asking if the deal was the only way to solve the tour’s financial hardship. The tour has an agreement with the Saudi sovereign wealth fund and the European tour to pool businesses in a new for-profit company. One person who has seen the agreement says it contains assurances the tour would keep a controlling voting interest no matter how much money the Saudis invested. Clark’s mother, Lise, died of breast cancer in 2013, which sent him spiraling. The road back led him to leave college at Oklahoma State for a fresh start at Oregon. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Washington Capitals 7, Chicago Blackhawks 3 Carolina Hurricanes 1, Detroit Red Wings 0 Capitals 7, Blackhawks 3 – Ovechkin reaches 800 goals as Capitals beat Blackhawks 7-3 Alex Ovechkin scored three times to become the third NHL player with 800 career goals, and the streaking Washington Capitals beat the lowly Chicago Blackhawks 7-3. Nic Dowd, Anthony Mantha, Trevor van Riemsdyk and Dmitry Orlov also scored as Washington earned its fifth straight win. Conor Sheary had two assists, and Charlie Lindgren made 26 stops. The Capitals went 6-2-1 during a nine-game stretch that had only one home date. They play seven of their next nine at home, beginning Thursday night against Dallas. Chicago dropped to 1-11-1 in its last 13 games. It has scored just four goals during a four-game slide. Hurricanes 1, Red Wings 0 – Skjei gives Carolina 1-0 win; Detroit’s Larkin leaves game Brady Skjei scored the only goal and Pyotr Kochetkov made 27 saves in the Carolina Hurricanes' 1-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings 1-0 in the 100th career meeting between the teams. Carolina improved to 5-0-1 on its current road swing, tying a record for most wins and setting a record for points on the road — passing Hartford's 10-point trip from Jan. 30-Feb. 11, 1996. Ville Husso made 26 saves for the Red Wings. Detroit captain Dylan Larkin blocked a shot earlier in the game and did not return for the third period. Coach Derek Lalonde said Larkin would not be able to play on Wednesday but didn’t elaborate. Tonight Detroit Red Wings at Minnesota Wild, 7:30 p.m. NCAAFB – Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach dies at 61 Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach has died following complications from a heart condition. The pioneering coach helped revolutionize the college football passing game with the Air Raid offense. Leach had been hospitalized over the weekend and had a bout of pneumonia late this season. He died Monday night. In 21 seasons as a head coach at Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State, Leach went 158-107. Six of the 20 best passing seasons in major college football history were by quarterbacks who played for Leach, including four of the top six. Mike Leach was 61. NCAAFB – Mississippi St faces tough decisions following Leach’s death No. 24 Mississippi State will be playing in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Illinois on Jan. 2 in Tampa, Florida. That is one of the few solid things around the football program following the sudden death of coach Mike Leach at the age of 61. Mississippi State is facing a search for a new coach. The annual signing day for recruits is coming up next week. Some players may transfer. And MSU is already looking for a permanent athletic director. Bracky Brett is serving in an interim role since John Cohen left to become AD at Auburn. NCAAFB – CFP – Ryan Day, Buckeyes feel urgency behind second chance at CFP Ohio State didn't get to control its playoff destiny after losing to rival Michigan at the end of the regular season. No matter. The Buckeyes are in the postseason and they're yearning for redemption. Coach Ryan Day said Tuesday the No. 4 Buckeyes had productive practices last week and realize the opportunity they have in front of them with a semifinal showdown against top-ranked Georgia. The Buckeyes took the back door into the College Football Playoff, benefiting from USC's second loss this year to Utah in the Pac-12 Championship game. Defending champion Georgia will host Ohio State on New Year's Eve in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta. NFL – Cardinals QB Kyler Murray out for season with torn ACL Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury confirmed the extent of the injury during his Tuesday news conference. The news is not a surprise after the 25-year-old injured his knee on the third play of Monday night's 27-13 loss to the New England Patriots. The fourth-year quarterback was flushed out of the pocket and running to his right when he tried to juke past a Patriots defender, but tumbled to the grass in obvious pain. Players from both teams surrounded the quarterback before he was carted off the field with a towel draped over his head. NBA – National Basketball Association Tonight Detroit Pistons at Charlotte Hornets, 7:00 p.m. Golden State Warriors at Indiana Pacers, 7:00 p.m. New York Knicks at Chicago Bulls, 7:30 p.m. NBA – Warriors’ Green says Bucks fan ‘threatened’ him; fan tossed A fan was ejected following a complaint by Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green during a game at Milwaukee on Tuesday night. The Bucks said they are investigating the incident and consulting with the NBA. Security personnel removed the man, who was sitting a few rows beyond the baseline, during a stop in play in the third quarter. Green said he pointed out the fan’s behavior to a game official, and the situation was taken care of from there. Green said the fan said “some threatening stuff to my life.” The Warriors lost the game 128-111. NCAA – Michigan State must disclose deals with 2 big sports donors A judge has ordered Michigan State University to release donor agreements with two alumni who gave or pledged millions of dollars to the athletic department. Michigan State has acknowledged that some of the money will help pay for a $95 million contract with football coach Mel Tucker. Tucker got a new deal in 2021 while leading the Spartans to an 11-2 record. But Michigan State has refused to release the agreements with Mat Ishbia and Steve St. Andre, citing a privacy exemption in the state's public records law. A judge rejected that argument Monday. Michigan State has 10 days to release the records. The lawsuit was filed by the Detroit Free Press. MLB – AP source: Carlos Correa, Giants reach $350M, 13-year deal All Star shortstop Carlos Correa and the San Francisco Giants have agreed to a $350 million, 13-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations has told The Associated Press. The 28-year-old Correa also was a free agent one year ago after leaving the Houston Astros, and he reached a $105.3 million deal with the Minnesota Twins. That agreement gave him the right to opt out after one year and $35.1 million to hit the market again. Correa batted .291 with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs in his one season with Minnesota. He could hardly be playing any better. Messi converted a penalty and had a hand in the other two goals by Julián Álvarez to lead Argentina to a 3-0 win over Croatia. It set up a meeting with either France or Morocco in Sunday's title match. It will be the 35-year-old Messi's second World Cup final in what might be his last ever appearance at the tournament. Croatia failed in its bid to reach a second straight World Cup final. Today Semifinal 2 France vs. Morocco, 2:00 p.m. FIFA – Morocco faces France in politically charged WCup semifinal As Morocco faces France in the World Cup semifinal, many players and fans of both diverse teams grapple with family tales of colonial history, challenges of immigration, questions of national loyalty. The match has political and emotional resonance for both nations. It dredges up everything that's complicated about the relationship in which France still wields considerable influence. For many in the former protectorate, the match against the defending champion is an opportunity to show that Morocco is a formidable foe — on the soccer pitch at least — even though immigration between the two countries has blurred the lines for many in France and in Morocco about who to support Wednesday in Qatar. MLB – Major League Baseball Playoffs – Wild Card Round – Best of three Today Wild Card Playoffs – Best of Three Tampa Bay (McClanahan 12-8) at Cleveland (Bieber 13-8), 12:07 p.m. Philadelphia (Wheeler 12-7) at St. Louis (Quintana 6-7), 2:07 p.m. Seattle (Castillo 8-6) at Toronto (Manoah 16-7), 4:07 p.m. San Diego (Darvish 16-8) at New York (Scherzer 11-5), 8:07 p.m. MLB – Detroit Tigers wrap disappointing season with new executive The Detroit Tigers head into the offseason after finishing 66-96 this year, the third-worst record in the American League. The franchise spent a lot of money entering the season to bolster the rotation and lineup and didn’t get much for it. Shortstop Javier Báez, signed to a $140 million contract, hit .238 with 17 homers, 67 RBIs and 147 strikeouts. Left-hander Eduardo Rodríguez also struggled. The Tigers did play .500 baseball over the final two months and that included wininng nine of 10 games at one point. NFL – National Football League – Week 5 Last Night Indianapolis Colts 12, Denver Broncos 9 – OT Colts 12, Broncos 9 – OT – Colts grind out 12-9 win over Broncos in injury-filled game Stephon Gilmore batted away Russell Wilson’s pass to Courtland Sutton in the end zone on fourth-and-1 from the 5 to give the Indianapolis Colts a 12-9 overtime victory over the Denver Broncos on Thursday night. Gilmore also intercepted Wilson’s pass in the fourth quarter to help set up Chase McLauglin’s tying field goal. McLauglin connected from 47 yards 4:10 into overtime to give the Colts (2-2-1) the lead in the first game in NFL history that pitted quarterbacks with at least four Pro Bowl appearances each, but it featured zero touchdowns. The Broncos (2-3) decided against a tying chip-shot field goal by Brandon McManus, and Wilson lined up in the shotgun next to running back Melvin Gordon, then threw incomplete over the middle. Sunday Detroit Lions at New England Patriots, 1:00 p.m. Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings, 1:00 p.m. NFL – Lions, Patriots looking to bounce back from 1-3 starts Scoring points hasn’t been an issue for the Detroit Lions this season, but it hasn’t translated into many victories. The New England Patriots are reeling for a different reason and could use a victory just as bad as the teams prepare to match up this week. Through four weeks, the Lions are averaging an NFL-high 35 points and a league-high 437 yards per game. But even 45 points was wasn’t enough to beat Seattle at Ford Field last week to drop Detroit to 1-3. New England is also 1-3 and is looking at the prospect of having its third starting quarterback in three weeks with Mac Jones nursing a tender ankle and Brian Hoyer going on injured reserve with a concussion . If they’re out, rookie Bailey Zappe will make his first career start. NFL – Justin Fields, mired Bears offense looking for positives Although Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields and receiver Darnell Mooney connected on a big pass play last week for the first time, they’re not expecting an immediate breakthrough in the team’s offense. Heading into a game against the Minnesota Vikings, the Bears remain focused on the process of building their overall attack and not simply evaluating Fields, offensive coordinator Luke Getsy says. Still, with an offense last in passing and next-to-last in yardage, and only two touchdowns in their last 32 possessions, the Bears (2-2) have work to do to be competitive on a weekly basis. NHL – National Hockey League – Preseason Last Night Minnesota Wild 4, Chicago Blackhawks 1 Tonight Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit Red Wings, 7:30 p.m. NCAAFB – College Football – Week 6 Tonight – Big Ten Nebraska at Rutgers, 7:00 p.m. Saturday (4) Michigan at Indiana, 12:00 p.m. Eastern Michigan at Western Michigan, 12:00 p.m. Ball State at Central Michigan, 3:30 p.m. (3) Ohio Sta te at Michigan State, 4:00 p.m. (16) BYU vs. Notre Dame, 7:30 p.m.                at Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas NCAAFB – Wolverines look to start another win streak over Indiana Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh knows the score. A 24-game winning streak over Indiana ended when the Wolverines last traveled to Bloomington. Coach Tom Allen’s teams had given Harbaugh all sorts of headaches even before the game two years ago. Now, though, with No. 4 Michigan pursuing a second straight Big Ten title and what it hopes will be a second consecutive playoff berth, the Wolverines want to turn up the pressure when they visit the Hoosiers on Saturday. NCAAFB – No. 3 Ohio State heavy favorite at Michigan State No. 3 Ohio State faces its first road test of the season Saturday at struggling Michigan State. The heavily favored Buckeyes are on a roll, averaging 55.7 points per game in their last four contests. They have won six straight games against Michigan State and 15 of the last 18 matchups between the two schools. The Spartans have lost three consecutive games, including 27-13 last week at Maryland. It’s Mel Tucker’s longest losing streak during his three-year tenure as Michigan State’s head coach. NBA – National Basketball Association – Preseason Tonight Indiana Pacers at New York Knicks, 7:30 p.m. Detroit Pistons at New Orleans Pelicans, 8:00 p.m. Denver Nuggets at Chicago Bulls, 8:00 p.m. NBA – Warriors’ Draymond Green apologizes for fight with teammate Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers says star forward Draymond Green apologized to the team a day after fighting with teammate Jordan Poole during practice. Poole practiced Thursday while Green didn’t. Myers said any potential discipline would be handled internally. Myers said he doesn’t anticipate Green missing any games for Wednesday’s altercation. The Athletic first reported the scuffle, saying Green struck Poole. Myers said “space is good” regarding Green not practicing and going home after he addressed the team. Green was previously suspended for one game in 2018 after a confrontation with teammate Kevin Durant.   WNBA – Brittney Griner at ‘weakest moment’ in Russia, her wife says WNBA star Brittney Griner is at her “absolute weakest moment in life right now” as she faces a hearing in Russia later this month for her appeal of a nine-year prison sentence for drug possession. That’s according to her wife, Cherelle Griner, who told “CBS Mornings” in an interview aired Thursday that Brittney Griner is afraid of being forgotten by the U.S. Brittney Griner was convicted Aug. 4 after Russian police found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage at a Moscow airport. Her defense lawyers said Griner had been prescribed cannabis for pain. Cherelle Griner said she fears her wife could be moved to a Russia labor camp. Golf – LIV – World ranking rejects last-minute LIV Golf bid for points The Official World Golf Ranking won’t be awarding points to LIV Golf events this year. The ranking board has denied a request to immediately add Saudi-funded LIV Golf to the MENA Tour schedule. The OWGR says the MENA Tour did not give it sufficient notice and there would not be time to finish the review ahead of the LIV Golf Invitational in Bangkok that starts Friday or the event in Saudi Arabia next week. There are only two LIV Golf events left so some players will be out of the top 50 and find a tough road back to the majors.
