STOC 129: Balancing Tradition & Innovation: What Businesses Can Learn from Harley Davidson with Ken Schmidt In this episode of 'Secret Thoughts of CEOs and Business Leaders,' host Chris Yonker interviews Ken Schmidt, a former Harley Davidson executive renowned for his innovative repositioning strategy. They discuss the key elements holding back family businesses and privately held companies, including family harmony, succession, financial management, and innovation. Ken shares insights into Harley Davidson's transformation, emphasizing the need for businesses to connect on a human level, foster a strong internal culture, and leverage their unique history. They explore how companies can balance maintaining core values with embracing new innovations to delight and retain customers. What You'll Learn · Humans naturally seek and return to sources of delight, regardless of how minor they are. · When the human connection is made, business wins. And at the end of the day, that makes the business more desirable. It makes people willing to pay more, for the privilege of being part of that community.” [19:45] · ” How can we do what we do faster, better, and cheaper to get more stuff out into the marketplace? That's exactly what customers are not looking for.” [27:55] Websites: fambizforum.com. www.chrisyonker.com. kenspeaks.com LinkedIn: @KenSchmidt Tailgating with Geniuses Podcast Ken Schmidt Bio: It's an impersonal world, where so many products and services are seen as easily-replaced, indistinct commodities. Whether you stand out or get lost in the crowd is a choice. A mindset. Ken Schmidt faced those same challenges himself and gained acclaim for his role in the extraordinary turnaround of the legendary Harley-Davidson Motor Company. That transformation was based on a change in mindset and a focus on answering three key strategic questions. While times have changed, what humans want and need from the businesses they buy from and work for hasn't. In his high-energy speeches, Ken inspires companies and individuals to shift their thinking and ride a path to success by becoming memorable – not for what they do or what they make, but for how they connect with people. Ken is author of Make Some Noise: The Unconventional Road to Dominance. He's also host of the Tailgating with Geniuses podcast and co-founder of Torque Sessions Leadership Training. In all of his endeavors, Ken brings an unconventional perspective that helps organizations and individuals reframe how they engage with their marketplace. Ken Schmidt's career in the motorcycle industry began in 1985 as a specialist in corporate positioning and media relations for the then-struggling Harley-Davidson. He was tasked with helping the company restore its image, improve its competitiveness, and create demand for its motorcycles. Within a few short years, sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles skyrocketed, and the company returned to prominence as one of the most respected, profitable, and frequently reported-on companies in the world. In 1990, Ken became director of Harley-Davidson's corporate and financial communications, serving as its primary spokesperson to the media and the financial communities. He frequently appeared in mainstream and business media to offer insights on nontraditional communications, customer attraction, and brand-building. His expertise and success at Harley- Davidson ultimately led to consulting assignments and speaking invitations from all over the world. In 1997, Ken left Harley-Davidson to take an ownership position with a highly successful Chicago-based marketing firm, VSA Partners. In addition to Harley-Davidson, VSA served a virtual who's who of the world's best-known brands. In 1999, he sold his portion of VSA to start his own business, Ken Schmidt Company, to combine two of his greatest passions, motorcycling and speaking. He uses motorcycles as a metaphor to expose people to proven ideas and concepts they've likely never imagined. In addition to speaking and consulting, Ken is co-founder of Torque Sessions Leadership Training. Through a combination of hands-on training and interactive workshops, these sessions help individuals and organizations re-position themselves to become dominant competitors, maximize leadership effectiveness, build a people-first culture of innovation and foster loyalty among customers and employees. Ken is also the host of the popular podcast Tailgating with Geniuses, wherein he talks with some of the most innovative and successful leaders in a variety of industries to discuss their unique perspectives on leadership, major challenges, and success. Ken's relatable and engaging hosting style has made the podcast a hit with listeners looking to learn from the best and achieve their own personal and professional goals. Ken authored Make Some Noise: The Unconventional Road to Dominance, which gives business leaders an easy-to-follow roadmap for improving their competitiveness, using many of the techniques he championed at Harley-Davidson. He considers his work on 100 Years of Harley-Davidson, a global best seller, to be one of his greatest and most rewarding achievements. After all he has accomplished, Ken remains committed to his philosophy of standing out, taking risks, and having fun in both his personal and professional life. He says, “Never do what's expected, make yourself as noticeably different as possible, and have a lot more fun than you're supposed to.”

This week on the Niche Cast we chat through a delayed start to the Blackcaps vs Afghanistan Test before going deep into the rugby league mangroves where we find back to back NSST champions St Thomas of Canterbury. Along with Southern Cross Campus winning the girls competition, these results inform us about the state of rugby league in New Zealand and there are lots of indicators suggesting that Lennox Tuiloma is one of, if not the best Kiwi-NRL prospect in Aotearoa after his dominant mahi with STOC and NZ Warriors Under 17s. We also break down NZ Warriors news such as Marcelo Montoya's possible departure, award winners and signing Erin Clark. Tatiana Finau and Sarina Masaga are youngsters from Auckland who made their NRLW debuts this weekend, while Dolphins and Eels have some Kiwi-NRL funk to discuss as well. We finish with lots of New Zealand football. All Whites lost to Mexico. Wellington Phoenix promoted Matt Sheridan and Alby Kelly-Heald. 06:30 - 07:00 Outro 07:00

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Prizes for matrix completion problems, published by paulfchristiano on May 3, 2023 on LessWrong. Here are two self-contained algorithmic questions that have come up in our research. We're offering a bounty of $5k for a solution to either of them—either an algorithm, or a lower bound under any hardness assumption that has appeared in the literature. Question 1 (existence of PSD completions): given m=Ω(n) entries of an n×n matrix, can we tell in time ~O(nm) whether it has any (real, symmetric) positive semidefinite completion? Proving that this task is at least as hard as dense matrix multiplication or PSD testing would count as a resolution. Question 2 (fast “approximate squaring”): given A∈Rn×n and a set of m=Ω(n) entries of AAT, can I find some PSD matrix that agrees with AAT in those m entries in time ~O(nm)? We'll pay $5k for a solution to either problem. The offer is open for each problem for 3 months or until the problem gets solved (whichever happens first). Winners are welcome to publish solutions independently. Otherwise, if the result ends up being a significant part of a paper, we'll invite them to be a coauthor. We'll also consider smaller prizes for partial progress, or anything that we find helpful for either solving the problem or realizing we should give up on it. To understand the motivation for these questions, you can read our paper on Formalizing the presumption of independence and in particular Appendix D.7.2. ARC is trying to find efficient heuristic estimators as a formalization of defeasible reasoning about quantities like the variance of a neural network's output. These two questions are very closely related to one of the simplest cases where we haven't yet found any reasonable linear time heuristic estimator. We don't expect to receive many incorrect proposals, but if we receive more than 5 we may start applying a higher standard in order to save our time. If we can't understand a solution quickly, we may ask you to provide more details, and if we still can't understand it we may reject it. We expect a correct solution to be about as clear and easy to verify as a paper published at STOC. For both problems, it's OK if we incorrectly treat a matrix as PSD as long as all of its eigenvalues are at least −ε for a small constant ε. ~O hides polylogarithmic factors in n, ε, and the max matrix entry. Feel free to ask for other clarifications on our question on Math Overflow, on Facebook, or by email. To submit a solution, send an email to prize@alignment.org. Thanks for listening. We're offering a bounty of $5k for a solution to either of them—either an algorithm, or a lower bound under any hardness assumption that has appeared in the literature. Question 1 (existence of PSD completions): given (m) entries of an (n times n) matrix, including the diagonal, can we tell in time (tilde{O}(nm)) whether it has any (real, symmetric) positive semidefinite completion? Proving that this task is at least as hard as dense matrix multiplication or PSD testing would count as a resolution. Question 2 (fast “approximate squaring”): given (A in ;mathbb{R}^{n times n}) and a set of (m = Omega(n)) entries of (AA^T), can I find some PSD matrix that agrees with (AA^T) in those m entries in time (tilde{O}(nm))? For both problems, it's OK if we incorrectly treat a matrix as PSD as long as all of its eigenvalues are at least (-varepsilon) for a small constant (varepsilon). (tilde{O}) hides polylogarithmic factors in (n), (varepsilon), and the max matrix entry. Feel free to ask for other clarifications on our question on Math Overflow, on Facebook, or by email. To submit a solution, send an email to prize@alignment.org. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org.

“put forward with such a quiet air of mastery” [STOC] As regular readers and listeners know, Michael F. Whelan, BSI ("Wiggins") passed away in October of 2021. His contribution to the Sherlockian game was more than any one person could adequately describe. To honor his memory, we gathered a number of Baker Street Irregulars to remember Mike beyond his Sherlockian self — people who knew him well and could comment on his interests, his personality, and his character. These were: Peter Blau, Ross Davies, Steven Doyle, Les Klinger, Hartley Nathan, Otto Penzler, and Steve Rothman. “extraordinary stories about your financial ability” [STOC] Money was occasionally a concern for Sherlock Holmes. But when, and more importantly, why? All of those police engagements were likely pro bono work, after all. His relationship with Watson began over the need to economize, and over the course of his career, he enjoyed some remarkably wealthy individuals as clients. It's just a Trifle. “he sang your praises very loudly” [STOC] As early as A Study in Scarlet, we discover that Sherlock Holmes "was as sensitive to flattery on the score of his art as any girl could be of her beauty." Then once again toward the end of the Canon, in "The Red Circle," Watson reminds us that "Holmes was accessible upon the side of flattery." We previously covered some of the insults and invective that Holmes had to endure. But what about praise? What about epithets that were acclamatory rather than derogatory. It is just a trifle. We wrap things up by discussing the Camp Flog Gnaw concert, and introduce the world to the Rena Report (which is pretty much just Kanye propoganda) Please make sure to subscribe to More Chune for more quality content, and follow us on twitter @ForTheCultureQU for more content!
AFTER A FULL WEEK OFF WE ARE BACK AND READY FOR ACTION!! WE GOT ALL THE FACTS AND IN DEPTH CONVERSATION THAT ALL OF YOU HAVE BEEN CHOMPING AT THE BITS FOR! Up this week: We have BRAND NEW album reviews ranging from FETTI all the way to the hood prophet himself JAY CRITCH (featuring a calldrops - esque feature from STOC himself) Later on we discuss the Mac Miller tribute concert, and breakdown some of the performances, and also start getting hype for the new Jaden Smith project.
STOC escapes the smeg zone just in time to join the gang for one last show before Summer starts. Of course we discuss the majority of the Friday album releases, and go in-depth on the future of Rae Sremmurd following SR3MM! Also, big thanks to all of our dedicated listeners and supporters over this past semester! It wouldn't be possible without you guys!
Frank Holmes, Amir Adnani and Michael Oliver return. Frank heads up U.S. Global Investors that manages a host of mutual funds and now has two unique ETF's: NYSE-JETS, an ETF that invests largely in commercial air lines, and NYSE-GOAU that invests in gold mining companies. U.S. Global's diverse portfolio of mutual funds enables investors to shift from one fund to another and rebalance according to their views on the markets. We will seek Frank's opinion not only on the markets for gold mining shares but in general about which sectors he thinks will perform best in 2018. Uranium miners have been among the least positive sectors in a downtrodden mining industry but Amir's Uranium Energy is one of the few very low-cost uranium producers in the U.S. that can turn on production to meet demand when prices spike higher. We will ask Michael Oliver what his momentum work is saying about uranium in addition to the usual markets he opines on.
On today's program Ellis speaks with Dr. Paul West-Sells, the President and CEO of Western Copper and Gold trading as WRN on the NYSE and on the TSX. "See how beautifully the spring works" [STUD] Spring is here! Suh-per-ing is here! Life is skittles and life is beer... You may not have realized this, but more than a quarter of the Sherlock Holmes stories occurred in the spring. We took the opportunity to call out a few of them an delve into why the season worked as both a setting for the stories and as tool to juxtapose Holmes and Watson. Of course, we don't stop there, as we chat about what our 100th episode may contain (just four episodes away!), a trending book topic on Twitter, the masterful scholarship that William S. Baring-Gould leveraged to determine his chronology, and welcome special guests Tom Lehrer and Orson Welles. The Sherlockian news is here to get you caught up, our Gas-Lamp is from the current issue of the Baker Street Journal (Vol. 66, No. 1), Rob Nunn joins us as a victim contestant on Mental Exaltation, and we give you a sneak peek into what IHOSE Episode 97 will contain. Our special thanks goes out to Mary Miller for her extraordinary Patreon support! Won't you join her and others by clicking on the button? "with the big book under my arm" [STOC] If you've been with us for a while, you'll have heard about Otto Penzler, BSI ("The King of Bohemia") before. He was our guest on when we talked about book collecting. Otto is back with us to talk about the genesis of , the largest anthology of stories about Sherlock Holmes to date, as well as the rest of his enterprises. We learn about what goes into selecting (and discarding) stories that make up the nine Big Book anthologies under the Vintage Crime/Black Lizard label from Random House. As if Otto's considerable and copious editing doesn't keep him busy enough, the additional Otto Penzler Enterprises include the Mysterious Press and the Mysterious Bookshop. From a dozen books a year via the Press, an epublishing platform, and proprietary publishing just for the bookstore. What impressed is that that Otto's business acumen, timing and good fortune tend to converge across his enterprises, making him quite successful at what he does — despite any misgivings about his memory. Otto manages to survive our "Mental Exaltations" quiz program, which he plays on behalf of a lucky listener, who will go home with a copy of The Big Book of Sherlock Holmes. We know we're mediocre at telling you about supporting us via . Make sure you listen to the end of the show for someone who knows what he's talking about. With the advent of cloud computing, our view of cryptographic protocols has changed dramatically. In this talk, I will give an overview of some of the newer challenges that we face in cloud cryptography and outline some of the techniques used to solve these problems. In particular, a few questions that I will address are:1) How can we store sensitive data in the cloud, in an encrypted manner, and yet allow controlled access to certain portions of this data?2) How can we ensure reliability of data across cloud servers that may be connected by only a low-degree communication network, even when some of the servers may become corrupted?3) How can users authenticate themselves to the cloud in a user-friendly way? This talk will assume no prior knowledge of cryptography and is based on works that appear at TCC 2012, ICALP 2010 and STOC 2010. About the speaker: Nishanth Chandran is a post-doctoral researcher in the Cryptography group at Microsoft Research, Redmond. His research interests are in the area of cryptography, security and distributed algorithms. Nishanth has published several papers in top theory and cryptography conferences such as STOC, FOCS, Crypto, Eurocrypt, TCC and so on. He received his PhD in Computer Science from UCLA in 2011, his Masters in Computer Science from UCLA in 2007, and his Bachelors in Computer Science and Engineering from Anna University, India in 2005. Nishanth received the Dissertation Year Fellowship from UCLA and the Chorafas International Award for exceptional achievements in research in 2010. He is also a professional Indian classical violinist.
