Movers and Shakers: a podcast about life with Parkinson's

There's no doubting the ability of music to uplift the soul – but could it also help to manage the symptoms of Parkinson's? That's what the Movers and Shakers are discussing today in the Notting Hill pub, as they're joined by musical experts, including a man who whistled for Monty Python's The Life of Brian and a Welsh samba band (who have brought their drums all the way to W11). Whether it's a conduit for new creativity, a means of raising awareness or a cuing mechanism to arrest the disease's progression, there's something undeniably special about music. So pause Classic FM (or BBC Radio 6, we don't discriminate) and tune in. Sponsored by Boardwave, who support Cure Parkinson's.Presented by Rory Cellan-Jones, Gillian Lacey-Solymar, Mark Mardell, Paul Mayhew-Archer, Sir Nicholas Mostyn and Jeremy Paxman.Produced and edited by Nick Hilton for Podot.Sound mixing by Ewan Cameron.Music by Alex Stobbs.Artwork by Till Lukat.PR by Sally Jones. Marina and Jemma begin this episode talking about their various coping strategies for living through a political binfire and... January. They have classical music in common but a clip from comedian Michael Spicer causes them to wonder, is The Trawl the equivalent to Classic FM? Then, they can't put if off any longer, it's time to find out what the newly inaugurated President has been up to and man, he's been busy. Busy making hellish statements about Gaza, busy deporting people, busy making cuts to cancer research, and busy dismissing government watchdogs and hiring cronies. The Trawl ladies are particularly alarmed by his pick for Secretary of Defence, a Fox News anchor called Pete Hegseth who wants to change his role to 'Secretary of War.' Okaaaaay.Still, Trump has claimed that Starmer is doing a 'good job'. Coming from him it's hardly praise you want framed. And inevitably Jemma and Marina want to discuss the fact that Musk spoke at an AfD rally in Germany. His words were chilling but hardly surprising given his choice of hand gesture on the world stage the week before. There are underrateds of course and pudding is a bit different to usual. A writer called Nate White wrote a magnificent response to the question 'Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?' Pudding gives you a flavour of his wonderful answer. For thirty years he was known primarily as a reporter and newscaster for ITN, covering major world events including the Philippines Revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 2008, the Royal Television Society awarded him with their highest accolade, the Lifetime Achievement Award. After leaving TV news John fell headfirst into a second career, in which he has been able to indulge his lifelong passion for music (Beethoven in particular). He presented Classic FM's flagship morning show for around a decade, later moving to The Classic FM Concert, and he still returns to present special series to this day.John's eighth book on Beethoven is out tomorrow via Elliot and Thompson. Titled In Search of Beethoven: A Personal Journey, it is quite unlike his others so far in that it combines the lives of both Beethoven and John himself; in a book that is part biography, part memoir, and part travelogue. In this episode, John talks about… well, Beethoven, but also why the process of writing this book was different to his others; and the nature of evolving scholarship meaning that things we've known to be true for years can suddenly turn out to be incorrect. John also talks about the tricky juxtaposition of his love and admiration for Beethoven ‘the artist' with his difficult feelings about Beethoven ‘the man'. Away from Beethoven, John shares how the pinnacle of his news career happened due to – in his words – sheer luck, and also the story of the time that same high-flying news career imploded on him.-------------------John's links:Website-------------------Follow The Classical Circuit on InstagramDid you enjoy this episode? The level of purity and craft is second to none.He is also a United fan, which is also brilliant (for Hugh at least). And on top of all that, he's just a really decent human being who - after many years smashing it in the UK - is now smashing it stateside in New York.We started with Eurostar and found out how the photographer went to the Eiffel Tower and shot at slightly the wrong angle … meaning a mini re-shoot to get it exactly right. These days it would no doubt be done in a matter of seconds with AI. But there's something gritty and real about the process back then. The rail tracks merging perfectly into the Eiffel Tower is one of the iconic OOH images of the past 30 years and rightly won all the awards going.Brian also created the Classic FM campaign which used instruments to portray power, exhilaration, peace and more in another wonderfully minimalist campaign shot by Nadav Kander that won yet more awards and plaudits. The use of white space letting the visuals sing is a lesson to all … less is more. Or as we recently coined … even less is even more.Army … Harrods … 18-30 … Empire City Casino, the great work continued as did the chat. The ‘bust up' fight in the Harrods designer room another (black) eye-opening story behind the work. Thanks again Brian for sharing your work and stories. We really enjoyed it.

Emma Clarke is an award-winning voice actor and writer who works across multiple types of performance and media. She can be heard in radio and TV commercials, corporate presentations, toys, games, apps, public transport and almost anything that needs a voice. Her clients include Astra Zeneca, BBC, Bauer Media, Chevrolet, Classic FM, Coca Cola Enterprises, Global Media Group, Google, L'Oréal, KIA, Transport for London, Mercedes-Benz, Microsoft, Nike, Sky, Sony, Tesco, Toyota, Unilever, Virgin. She is best known as one of the Mind The Gap voices on London Underground, and played the part of the Starship Avalon in the Hollywood blockbuster movie 'Passengers' alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. She is also a PhD student at RNCM where she is researching how her background as a voice actor influences how she composes music. VO has been Paul's sole source of income for decades, despite which he has a nagging suspicion that he's been somehow ‘getting away with it' for 46 years. After all, how can anyone get paid just for reading aloud into a microphone for that long without someone smelling a rat? In that time the world of audio recording has changed out of all recognition, but Paul has remained doggedly the same. He even uses the same microphone. And the same underwear. He doesn't know what SEO is, can't maintain a website, is hopeless at selling himself, thinks that computer games are still loaded from audio cassettes and is utterly baffled by the success of podcasts. In an in-depth interview, Devin Patrick Hughes speaks with former ITN journalist, ClassicFM host, and biographer John Suchet discusses his transition from journalism to classical music as a career because of his connection to Tchaikovsky's music. He shares his initial love for Tchaikovsky's melodies, developing an understanding of music through learning jazz trombone, and his eventual passion for writing about classical music composers. John touches upon Tchaikovsky's struggle with his identity and homosexuality, and how it influenced his symphonic works. Additionally, he considers the debate about Tchaikovsky's dubious death and the bizarre relationship that Tchaikovsky had with Nadezhda von Meck, his best-known patroness. John believes his approach to understanding music is through the man and not the music, and shares never before heard anecdotes about Tchaikovsky's relationships with other men.  00:00 Introduction and Early Life 00:16 Transition into Classical Music 00:34 Tchaikovsky's Early Musical Journey 01:49 Tchaikovsky's Career in Journalism 02:57 Tchaikovsky's Love for Classical Music 03:43 Tchaikovsky's Writing Career 04:13 Tchaikovsky's Love for Other Composers 05:47 Tchaikovsky's Self Doubt 08:13 Tchaikovsky's Struggles with Homosexuality 10:27 Tchaikovsky's Marriage and its Impact 11:57 Tchaikovsky's Influence and Legacy 28:28 Tchaikovsky's Death and its Controversy 38:47 Conclusion: Tchaikovsky's Enduring Impact As the host of The Classic FM Concert with John Suchet for 12 years, John Suchet is a household voice in classical music and broadcasting. The music hall-style caper - which revolves around a comically catastrophic interpretation of Grieg's Piano Concerto - was actually a reversion of a sketch Eric and Ernie had performed at least twice before, but never with a guest performer. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Mia Farrow helped Previn nail his role in this iconic skit; explore whether the duo's comic schtick was truly as ‘classless' as is often claimed; and reflect on whether ‘Mr Preview' really knew what he was letting himself in for… Further Reading: • André Previn on ‘The Morcambe and Wise Show' (BBC, 1971): https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xds7am • 'Make any fool of me you like, but I won't have you make fun of the music' - André Previn at 80 (Classic FM, 2018): https://www.classicfm.com/artists/andre-previn/guides/andre-previn-80/ • ‘The Prelude of Mr Preview: How André Previn won over Morecambe & Wise' (British Comedy Guide, 2020): https://www.comedy.co.uk/features/comedy_chronicles/andre-previn-prelude-preview/ ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' SynopsisDespite a disastrous premiere in Birmingham on today's date in 1900, Edward Elgar's oratorio The Dream of Gerontius has become one of his best-loved and most-frequently performed works in the UK, where, in 2015, Classic FM offered a guide to what it called the work's “most epic choral stupendousness.”Here's Classic FM's summary of its story: “The piece follows an ‘everyman' character (the word ‘Gerontius' comes from the Greek for ‘old man') as he faces death, meets his guardian angel and goes before his God before being taken to Purgatory with the promise of everlasting glory.”Well, all that Roman Catholic talk of Purgatory in the poem by Cardinal John Henry Newman that Elgar set to music did not sit well with the Church of England in the early decades of the 20th century. Many Anglican clerics flatly refused to let it be performed in their cathedrals. But that controversy is long a thing of the past, and nowadays Gerontius is performed at cathedrals such as St. Paul's in London and in concert venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, where in 1991 it was performed at the BBC Proms in the presence of the Prince of Wales, now known as King Charles III.Music Played in Today's ProgramEdward Elgar (1857-1934) — The Dream of Gerontius (John Shirley-Quirk, bar.; London Symphony Chorus; King's College Choir, Cambridge; London Symphony Orchestra; Benjamin Britten, cond.) I've got my rubber dam isolation and I just enter this flow state. It really is a fun procedure for me because I feel that every prep and something I'll guess today, Dr. Ashley Chung, aka @dr.ashlifts, also says later in this episode that she feels like no two of her preps ever look the same. Jaz's Introduction:And there is a beauty in that. You really have to think before you prep. It's not like making a one millimeter shoulder all day round. There's decisions to make which cusps are in compression, which cusps are in tension, which cusps can you preserve? And that's why all of our onlay preps look different for different teeth, for different scenarios. And it's a big part of why I've been doing this for about six years now. And I just love it. I still love it. I still tell my nurse, Zoe. We have an onlay prep today. I'm going to be in the zone. We'll put on some classical music. I'll have rubber dam on and I just enjoy it. It's usually either classical music or like rock music. So those are my two-treatment music. I used to do hip hop, but then the swear words and curse words, I didn't think that was a good vibe in my patients. So think like, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, that kind of stuff. Always classic FM, right? It's one of the two. Now in this episode with Ash, who by the way, is just the most humble dentist ever. She's so sweet, she's so humble, she's so caring, so giving. All those good things that we need in dentistry, right? There's too much fake stuff in dentistry. There's too much showing off. There's too much, look at me, I'm awesome. I've got millions of followers and I've got a Ferrari and this kind of watch. Where she is just as far away from that as you can go. And this is why she's attracted such a large audience on Instagram, and I think she deserves all the followers and all the applause that goes with it for all her work that she does. So we need more people like Ash in dentistry, so it was great to have her on the podcast. Whilst a good chunk of this episode was partial coverage, like how can you preserve certain cusps, and what does Ash look for on the tooth when she's doing that? So some guidelines on thicknesses of the ceramic as well, when to use which cement, find out when I use Panavia and when I use heated composite and also what Ash's protocols are. Find out if you use IvoClean or not. And our thoughts on zirconia overlays and zirconia onlays, like I can tell you now I'm like what the hell, why is this even a thing, but I'm happy to prove wrong. It's all KOHLA The seven track LP is the highly-anticipated album from this talented artist who has already forged a strong fan base thanks to previous singles One and Only premiered by Wonderland Magazine, Sweetest Love, which was awarded Single of the Week on BBC Radio Scotland, and Bedroom which was hailed as ‘an answer to pop misogyny' by The Herald Newspaper. Kohla is the project of Rachel Alice Johnson, a singer-songwriter and musician with a classical background. An interdisciplinary Scottish artist, she is a singer, songwriter, producer, fine artist, dancer, poet and a graduate of the Edinburgh College of Art. She is also the founder of Popgirlz Scotland, a support group for women in music, and lectures about feminism at international universities. A self-taught producer, working primarily in orchestral programming on Ableton software in her home studio (statistics show that only 2.9% of producers are female). She has recently been selected by Help Musicians to undertake production and mixing training with professional female Ableton trainer Anna Lakatos. Speaking about the new album, Kohla said: “I've always felt incredibly fascinated by the concept of romantic love; how cinematic and luxurious it feels to be adored by another human being. How rare it is. And how devastating it can feel to lose. “I wrote ‘Romance' whilst enduring a summer of filmic heartbreak. In desperate need of an emotional release, I turned to my piano for comfort. I wrote personally and vulnerably, for what felt like the very first time. Within eight weeks, ‘Romance' had written itself. “In hindsight, ‘Romance' feels very much to me like a ‘coming-of-age' album. From a female perspective, I realised I had grown up with a blissful naive idea of romance, whether formed through Disney or education. I felt impassioned to detach from this oppressive ideology, where women require a sub-standard partner to provide safety or validation. It feels emotional to let go of the little girl who wanted to believe in so much. But it's left me with a valuable perspective - the love I found for myself is worth so much more.” As a clarinettist she performed in school orchestras and competed in national competitions, while at home, her father would play Classic FM, subtly exposing her to masterpieces by Beethoven, Mozart and Debussy. Alongside these formative influences, Kohla draws inspiration from legendary 60s artists such as Sam Cooke and Etta James, and her cinematic production nods to the likes of Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey and FKA Twigs. ‘Romance' is co-produced by Kohla's creative partner Dave Lloyd, of the Edinburgh band Stillhound, and her sonic stories are coloured through a blend of digital and analogue, a vivid illustration of her sepia-tinged memories. Written during a summer that Kohla describes as a period of “filmic heartbreak”, ‘Romance' is the sound of emotional release and vulnerability. During the album's creation, she took inspiration from a range of sources, including daily hikes, meditation, painting and reading, the legendary soul and jazz of Etta James, Sam Cooke and Nat King Cole, Jackie Kay's poetry and Sofia Coppola's motion pictures. ‘Romance' marks the culmination of a rich and deeply creative and heartfelt chapter in Kohla's creative journey and musical career, and is an assured and alluring debut album from this exceptional artist. #KOHLA #Music #Popgirlz
