“It's almost been ten years and for me it was just kind of time. Contract changes, life changes now with having a two-year-old and wanting to grow the family side of things... A lot of factors all came together at the right time for me to make the decision.”My guest for today's episode is Clayton Murphy, who's been part of American middle-distance running history for the better part of a decade and is now officially hanging up his spikes. From the small town of New Madison, Ohio, to the Olympic podium in Rio — Clayton's career is the stuff of dreams. He was the kid from the Mid-American Conference who took down giants. The collegiate star who doubled up at NCAAs. The 21-year-old who kicked his way to Olympic bronze in the 800 meters — running 1:42.93, still the fifth-fastest time by an American in history.Over the years, Clayton's worn the red, white, and blue across the globe — from the Pan Am Games, where he struck gold, to two Olympic Games, multiple U.S. titles, and countless memorable finishes. But it hasn't always been smooth sailing. He's battled injuries, coaching changes, and the highs and lows that come with being one of the best in a brutal event. And now, after a career that spanned over a decade at the professional level — Clayton is here to reflect on what it meant, how he made peace with the decision, and what's next.SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. TRIALS TALK DAY 7: VAL CONSTIEN LEADS EPIC WOMEN'S 3000M STEEPLECHASE FINAL, FIRST LOOK AT RAI BENJAMIN + SYDNEY MCLAUGHLIN-LEVRONE + 1500M ROUND 1 ANALYSIS

Did you miss us?! The U.S. Olympic Trials are back and better than ever in the second half of the 8-day program, with incredible drama, upsets, and underdog stories across the board. The race of the day (and perhaps the week?) was the women's steeplechase, where a fast early pace and a topsy-turvy final lap ended with a whole slew of personal bests and rewriting of the record books. Tokyo Olympian Val Constien ended up on top thanks to a phenomenal final 400m, running 9:03.22 to PR by 11 seconds and land at #3 on the U.S. all-time list. Constien had ACL surgery last year and after a long road back is better than ever. We got our first peeks at the 400m hurdles crew, and the main takeaway from the first round is that Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Rai Benjamin are looking like world beaters out for an easy jog. McLaughlin-Levrone in particular shut it down entirely over the final two laps and still ran 53.07, the third-fastest performance in the world this year behind her own season's best and Femke Bol's world lead. Speaking of first looks, Erriyon Knighton doesn't seem to have missed a step as he ran his first 200m in four months, cruising through the first round with a 20.15 just behind Noah Lyles's 20.10 in an earlier heat. And a stacked final is set for the 5000m, where reigning U.S. champ Abdi Nur takes on two of the three members of Team USA in the 10,000m, the 1500m Trials champ, and two NCAA champs. The middle-distance rounds will continue to get more and more cutthroat, with the women's 1500m featuring Elle St. Pierre, Heather MacLean, Cory McGee, Emily MacKay, Elise Cranny, Nikki Hiltz, Sinclaire Johnson, and more heading to the semis and Olympians Bryce Hoppel and Clayton Murphy looking ready to once again do battle in the 800m.

The first track and field medals of the Tokyo Olympics were decided with Selemon Barega winning gold in the men's 10,000 meters to put Ethiopia back on top of the event for the first time since Kenenisa Bekele and Haile Gebrselassie's reign. Uganda took silver and bronze with Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo deploying team tactics but not quite following the plan. Grant Fisher may be a 10K guy, as much as he may not like that, after taking fifth to earn the top American honors. Plus, what was the gutsiest performance of the day that came out of this race? Find out. Also discussed in this episode: – The women's 400m hurdles is set for a major clash of the titans again with smooth showings by Sydney McLaughlin, Dalilah Muhammad and Femke Bol – Why the women's 5,000 meter final may end up being historically fast with Kenya and Ethiopia fielding their stars vs. Sifan Hassan – How hard will it be for the U.S. to come away with more than one medal in the 100m hurdles after a sweep in 2016? – No more sleeping on Clayton Murphy as the U.S. puts three men in the final but what's this mean for Nijel Amos? – Big Throws love to Raven Saunders and Jessica Ramsey – Examining the Blessing Okagbare positive test for HGH and the subsequent suspension mid-Games – Kudos for Matt Ludwig making it to Tokyo to replace Sam Kendricks + More TUNE IN AND LISTEN TO TORCH TALK WITH CHRIS, KYLE AND DANA. Our daily podcast covering the Olympics is presented by Hayward Magic. Hayward Magic is a really unique and fresh editorial channel on IG that captures the magic and intensity of track & field. Another week in the books, and another week closer to football, folks. It will be here before we know it. We're all looking forward to the fall, but that doesn't mean that there's nothing happening right now in the MAC universe. We're excited to recap the week that was! In the news this week, two former MAC track and field athletes have qualified for the Olympics. Former Akron distance runner Clayton Murphy qualified for Tokyo in the 800 meter race, after claiming the Bronze medal in the 2016 Games. Similarly, former Eastern Michigan standout Donald Scott qualified for Tokyo in the triple jump. This will be Donald's first trip to the Olympics, a huge accomplishment. Congratulations and good luck to both! We'll certainly be monitoring their success in Japan next month. On the hardwood, new EMU men's basketball coach Stan Heath continued his overhaul of the Eagles roster, bringing in graduate transfer James “Monty” Scott from Portland State. This certainly seems like a welcome addition for Eastern, as Scott averaged 13.7 PPG for the Vikings last year and was named All-Big Sky Honorable Mention. Also at EMU, some cool news from the gridiron: Punter Jake Julien was named 4th team preseason All-American by Phil Steele, who released his All-American lists this week. Julien is the only MAC player to earn this distinction, and it's easy to see why. He's really proved himself to be elite for the Eagles over the past four years. Rounding out the news this week, the boys break down the recent Supreme Court ruling, which limits the NCAA's ability to restrict the benefits that schools can offer their student-athletes. This feels like the first domino to fall for the NCAA, and we will be interested to see what this leads to. In a week one football preview, the boys break down the slate of games for the opening week and discuss the best match-up's. Zach talked a few weeks ago about Syracuse traveling to Ohio, and Sam touches on Kent State's trip to Texas A&M. Do you see any opportunities for the MAC to steal a win in the opening week? To close out the show, the boys welcome Hustle Belt Creative Director James Jimenez to discuss how he became a fan of Central Michigan. James talks about how he ended up choosing to go to CMU, what the fanbase is like, and how folks feel about the current state of Chippewa athletics. Thanks for stopping by this week folks. Have a great weekend, and we'll talk to you next Friday. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

It is very difficult to figure out who is going to be great in the sport of running. Sometimes it can be obvious and easy to pick out the kids who could possibly go pro in football and basketball at an early age. Which could often be as early as their early high school years. However, that isn’t quite the case with running. No one really knows how many reps it takes along the spectrum of repetition to get so good that you’d one day become a professional runner.   Today’s guest went from good to great rather quickly once he attended  Akron University for both cross country and track and field. No one knows how long it takes to get great, but we can all look at Clayton Murphy’s journey and see exactly how long it took for him.    Clayton progressed so quickly within the middle distance races while at Akron that he finished 3rd at both the NCAA Indoor & Outdoor Championships in just his sophomore season in the 800 meter run. During his time at Akron he became a 4 x All-American and a 3 x National Champion (2x 800 meters 1x1500).   In 2015 we would see Clayton win his first Pan-American games in the 800 meter run followed up by his bronze medalist performance in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games in the 800 meter run.   Clayton currently resides in Cleveland, Ohio with his wife Ariana Murphy, who is an olympian herself.   In this episode we discuss:   How Clayton made the jump from good to great Clayton’s training in High School How he handled Quarantine How he was able to balance being a college student and athlete simultaneously during the time of his breakthrough How important it is to be flexible throughout the training process The advantage of having a support system and what drives him to be better Fulfilling running moments How he prepares in practice to execute in races and the importance of. Communications with your coach Why Akron University decided to cancel the Men’s Cross Country program His current training and parting piece of advice     Accomplishments & Personal Bests 4x NCAA D1 All-American 3x NCAA D1 National Champion He was the gold medalist in the 800-meter run at the 2015 Pan American Games. He won the bronze medal in the 800-meter run at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.    800 | 1:42.93    1500 | 3:36.23   Clayton’s Sponsors | Nike, XENDURANCE, Firefly   Follow | claytonmurphy.com   Show is sponsored by | AUDIBLE Click here for your FREE 30-day free trial  www.audibletrial.com/runtheglobe2020
