„Was sagst du da?

Hoppel di hopp. Hoppel di hopp. Hopp, hopp, hopp! Today on the podcast, I am joined by newly minted American Record Holder Bryce Hoppel! Bryce holds the American Record in the 800m, having run 1:41.67 in the Olympic final. Byrce is the 2024 World Indoor Championship Gold Medalist. He's also a 2xOlympian and 2xNCAA Champ where he had a 21 race win streak. Bryce won the 2016 Texas 6A State Track & Field Championship with a time of 1:49.67, including an undefeated season in the 800 meters. He then went on to Kansas, where he was a five-time All-American, two-time National Champion, and four-time Big 12 Champion. In 2019, Hoppel completed a sweep of both the indoor and outdoor NCAA 800m titles, becoming the first male from the University of Kansas to win an NCAA title in the event. Hoppel's 21 race unbeaten streak began during the indoor season in 2019, lasting until the USATF Outdoor Championships on July 25. Bryce competes professionally for Adidas and The Very Nice Track Club, based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan. In today's conversation, Bryce takes me through his Olympic performance, where he ran an American Record, the state of the 800m as an event, doping in sport, his dominant years at Kansas, joining VNTC, and much more! This one was a ton of fun and had a ton of wisdom in it. Do not miss this conversation! Tap into the Bryce Hoppel Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! I would also appreciate it if you share it with your friend who you think will benefit from it. If this episode blesses you, please share it with a friend! Last one, fast one?! The final day of the Olympic Trials was one for the history books. In every. single. event. that took place on the tracks yesterday afternoon, the Olympic Trials meet record was broken. In multiple events, simply qualifying for Team USA meant you had to produce a performance that ranked in the U.S. top-10 of all time. 12.37 in the 100m hurdles, 3:56.75 in the women's 1500m, and 1:44.12 in the men's 800m were only good enough for fourth place. The mantra of “iron sharpens iron” normally applies to training groups, but it certainly also applies to American track and field right now. When being top 10 in the world is not a guarantee of being top 3 in the U.S., the choice is simple: you elevate your game or you go home. The afternoon began with the 5000m final, where last year's U.S. champ Abdi Nur and this year's 10,000m champ Grant Fisher treated the fans to an epic duel over the final few laps. It took a sub-4 1600m to break the rest of the field, and in the final strides, Fisher was able to re-pass Nur and get his second title of the week, the first time he's completed the 10/5 double. Behind them, it was a similar battle for third between collegians Parker Wolfe and Graham Blanks, and it's still not clear whether Wolfe or Blanks will end up on Team USA. Wolfe needs a few scratches in the world rankings ahead of him, and Blanks has the auto standard. In the men's 800m, Bryce Hoppel won his sixth straight U.S. title (counting indoors), but he did it in the fastest time of his career, a 1:42.77. His training partner Hobbs Kessler snagged third and qualifies for both the 800m and 1500m, the first time an American man has done that since 1976. In the women's 100m hurdles, you could throw a blanket over the whole field with two hurdles remaining, but it was Masai Russell who closed the best and clocked a 12.25, the good for #4 on the world all-time list. Rai Benjamin did Rai Benjamin things in the men's 400m hurdles, cruising to a 46.47 world lead and meet record well ahead of the competition. The women's 1500m was an absolute battle — more on that below. And then we closed the weekend with Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. McLaughlin-Levrone is used to being the star of the show, and honestly her biggest competition is usually the shadow of her past self. In the 400m hurdles final she had the benefit of a fast-starting Anna Cockrell on her outside, who stayed even with the Olympic champ for the first three hurdles and kept the pressure on early. But the real difference was that, coming around the final turn, McLaughlin-Levrone didn't shut it down like she normally does through the rounds, instead powering down the homestretch to an incredible new world record 50.65. For those keeping score at home, that's the fifth time McLaughlin-Levrone has lowered the world record. When she started, the world record she was breaking was Dalilah Muhammad's 52.16 from 2019, and now it's an incredible 1.51 seconds faster. SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

"I never had any problems with the workouts, but for me personally, I think it started to affect my mental and social side to where my relationship with running wasn't really happy. There was almost a nonexistent excitement for workouts and I was just kind of going through the monotony, but not enjoying it. And so changing it up, when you need excitement to love running again – being with VNTC guys lit that spark for me again. I am getting better at physical training and it's exciting with Hobbs. That guy's amazing and I just needed a new change of scenery." The kid from Midland, Texas went to the University of Kansas to chase some big dreams and now Bryce Hoppel is a World Indoor Champion. It was won with experience as much as it was with fitness. It happens in the blink of an eye that the rookie becomes the veteran, but now Hoppel is in the prime years of his career. I hadn't yet given my congratulations to him so I reached out to hear how everything was being digested since Glasgow.

However, I also love my Elite Series 2 and can't imagine going back to a regular controller. This leads to a question for you guys. How many controllers is too many, and is it bad to get a controller and not use it very much? Basically, I need you to convince me to go get this new 20th anniversary one.https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2021/10/07/celebrate-20-years-of-play-with-20th-anniversary-hardware/Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition has been announced for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S! This week's guest is newly-minted Olympian Bryce Hoppel, who joined the podcast a few days before leaving for Tokyo. Bryce qualified for the 2021 Olympics when he finished third in the 800m, making his second U.S. national team since turning pro in 2019. At the World Championships in Doha, he finished 4th in the 800m, and he's not shy about his desire to land on the podium this time around. Bryce is a Texas native and graduate of the University of Kansas and we had a great conversation about his path to running, his go-to taco order, why he should star in Space Jam 3, and everything in between. The first round of the 800 is the evening of Friday, July 30 if you live in the U.S., so don't miss the chance to cheer him on! On the men's 800m squad: “We come around when it counts. People are already counting us out but we're definitely going to put two, if not three of us into the final, and one of us is gonna get a medal for sure. I know I'm going for it.” On pre-Olympics jitters: “I think it's definitely more nerve-wracking leading up to it. Once it actually gets here, it's like, there's nothing you can do about it: go out there and compete. I just want to get to Tokyo… that's the most stressful thing. They're so strict about everything, you worry ‘am I even gonna make it there?' And once you're there, everything will click.” On heading to Tokyo without American Record holder Donavan Brazier on the 800m team: “It hit me right after all the feelings of making the Olympic team – I was like, dang, Donavan's not on the team. That was crazy. It's definitely going to be a different team without him, but he's going to bounce back; he's one of the best to ever do it.” On choosing the University of Kansas: “Kansas was one of the official visits that I went on and really liked it. I fell in love with track and cross country by finding a great group of friends there at Midland [in high school], and when I met the tight-knit community here, I was like, ‘let's do it.' Two days later I was scheduled for another official visit, but something just woke me up at 3am and I was just like, ‘I really loved Kansas. I want to go there' [….] and luckily everything worked out and went well, and I definitely wouldn't do anything different.”
This week's episode is a deep dive into the divisive but critically acclaimed Death Stranding, with special guest Ciaran Daly. We have a spoiler break half way through, so if you're yet to play the game, you're safe until then; if you've finished it and want some dissection of the plot and late game, it comes in the second half. Also mentioned this episode: Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Carrion. Very special thanks to Patreon supporter Hoppel for sending me his old Xbox One S to play Gamepass! Follow Ciaran as Facecuddle on Twitter and Twitch, and via @radartreview. You can find the BBC documentary on Death Stranding that's mentioned in the episode here. The Olympic Trials are 44 days away and On is teaming up with LetsRun.com to sponsor our Countdown to the Trials. On Athletics Club coach Dathan Ritzenhein joins us at 63:29 to discuss his new team, their instant success, his big goals and a lot more, including huge expectations for Oli Hoare, Alicia Monson and the team. There is a huge weekend of track action led by the USATF Golden Games at Mt. Sac where NFL star DK Metcalf will get a lot of attention racing the big boys. The race of the meet however is the men's 800m where Donavan Brazier, Clayton Murphy, and Bryce Hoppel clash. Evan Jager returns to the steeple and Elle Purrier is in the 1500. Could the race of the weekend be at the Oregon Twilight meet where Cole Hocker takes on Yared Nuguse? American 800m runner, Bryce Hoppel, ended the 2020 calendar year ranked #2 in the world over 800m. A two-time NCAA 800m champion, he has an 800m PR of 1:43.23 set at the 2020 Monaco Diamond League. With a 4th place finish at the 2019 world champs 800m, Hoppel is a serious threat for a podium finish come the Tokyo Olympics. We sat down with Bryce and dove deep into his training and everything that goes with it.

Naomi Hoppel’s love for design and the use of space led her to a career in architecture. She earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in the profession, although graduating into a difficult job market in the wake of the 2007 – 2008 financial crisis gave her reason to consider alternate options. Naomi had always been interested in volunteering for the Peace Corps, and this seemed like the perfect time to do it. After two years of service in Peru as a community development consultant, she returned home to Pittsburgh.Naomi expected her time back home to be temporary as she recuperated, evaluated job opportunities, and helped her brother open his yoga studio. Little did she know that she would soon fall in love with all of the great things happening in her hometown. Lawrenceville’s resurgence was in full swing, and she decided that she wanted to be more deeply involved in the community. Naomi played a large part in the redevelopment of her brother’s building at the entrance to the burgeoning neighborhood near the intersection of Penn Avenue and Butler Street. In 2013, she took over the small retail space in the front of the newly refurbished building, and the Pittsburgh Juice Company was born.If you have any questions or if you’d like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. Former Kansas track star Bryce Hoppel grew up in a sports family and he started his athletic career running the soccer fields in Midland, Texas. Ironically, staying in shape for soccer led him to things he could have never imagined in a different sport. At first, Hoppel didn't really like the running. He just liked being one of the guys. Hoppel began turning heads with his teammates in high school, and then in college in Lawrence, where he was a five-time All-American, two-time National Champion and four-time Big 12 Champion. In 2019, Hoppel completed a sweep of both the indoor and outdoor 800 meter NCAA titles, becoming the first male from the University of Kansas to win a collegiate title in the event. And although those were great memories, his greatest memories revolve around his teammates. Now, Hoppel hopes his teammates will be cheering on for another adventure – a run to the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Dermatology residents may be among the least burned-out residents across specialties, but burnout syndrome still affects almost one in three dermatology residents. In this special resident takeover of the podcast, three dermatology residents — Dr. Julie Croley (@dr.skinandsmiles), Dr. Elisabeth Tracey, and Dr. Daniel Mazori — discuss sources of stress for dermatology residents as well as tools to identify and combat burnout to ultimately be a better provider. “The low-stress perception of dermatologists may counterintuitively or paradoxically make recognizing burnout within others and ourselves challenging, so I think it’s important for residents and faculty to be aware that this occurs in such a high prevalence,” reports Dr. Croley. We also bring you the latest in dermatology news and research. 1. Parent survey sheds some light on suboptimal compliance with eczema medications Nearly half of children with atopic dermatitis were not getting their medications as prescribed. 2. Meta-analysis finds platelet-rich plasma may improve hair growth Five studies reported statistically significant increases in hair density in favor of PRP over placebo. 3. Business case for interoperability remains elusive Bringing ownership of health data to the individual and setting a clearer definition of health IT standards are important drivers of interoperability. Things you will learn in this episode: Jeffrey Benabio quipped in a Dermatology News column, “The phrase ‘dermatologist burnout’ may seem as oxymoronic as jumbo shrimp, yet both are real.” Burnout is a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a sense of reduced personal accomplishment. For dermatology residents, the preliminary internship year plus the first year of residency can be the most stressful. “You have 2 years of being the least experienced person in your department,” explains Dr. Tracey, “and so that adds to the stress of the sense of lack of accomplishment during that time.” Board examinations are a top stressor for dermatology residents. Institutions are recognizing and addressing burnout among residents by offering wellness lectures, yoga classes, and social events to counteract the stresses of residency. Some also hold town hall meetings and forums that allow residents and other department members to raise concerns and find concrete solutions to shared problems. Formalizing feedback to residents, especially positive feedback, also is important. Residents — and all health care providers — need to take care of themselves to provide the best care to their patients. “It’s all about balance and about creating time for those other things that are important to you and not feeling guilty about setting aside time to do those things. We don’t always need to be productive and always be working,” Dr. Tracey adds. Setting both short- and long-term goals may be helpful in preventing burnout. Don’t lose sight of the ultimate goal — becoming a dermatologist — but set and focus on goals for the day or the week. First-year residents can help to create a positive culture within their departments. Instead of commiserating with colleagues only about a hard day, “sharing cool cases or talking about interesting things that you’ve learned” can create a better environment for everyone, Dr. Tracey advises. The idea that dermatology residents can’t or don’t experience burnout is a myth. “Just like a rare diagnosis, it’s sometimes harder to spot than something that we see all the time,” says Dr. Mazori. If a resident is starting to feel burned out, it is essential to reach out to a trusted friend or colleague to address the issues. Dunmore comedian Dan Hoppel is our guest on Episode 25. He relates the interesting story of the ups and downs that led him into stand-up comedy and we talk about marriage and relationships, different types of comedy and comedians, writing jokes about everything from death to being overweight, who the best professional comedians are currently, and the next steps in his career. We go off on many weird and funny tangents and Lauren laughs and makes more faces at the rest of us than on any previous show. Jer Tobin of Big Idea Photo and Video Productions fills in for Jimmy again this week. In The Last Word, we talk about how NEPA Scene’s newest weekly feature, Beautiful People of NEPA, came about and the overwhelming positive reactions we’ve received from it, which leads into a discussion on what beauty is and how it’s often defined for us by fashion and the media. Hoppel can be seen next at NEPA Scene’s Got Talent tonight at 7 p.m. at Thirst T’s Bar & Grill (120 Lincoln St., Olyphant) and on Saturday, May 16 at 6 p.m. at the Plymouth Eagles Club (145 E. The Business of Giving No contracts. No selling. No price. That's how today's guest, Adrian Hoppel, a Philadelphia-based web designer, does "business." Instead, he simply gives his work away - as a gift - and expects nothing in return. Yet instead of being taken advantage of, Adrian's business has flourished. Last year, he worked on 25 projects and ended up getting paid more per project than he would have had he used fixed pricing. And less than half way through this year, Adrian's already more than tripled his total projects from last year (in fact, he's had to hire multiple employees...and get this: they ALL work in the gift economy). And the requests for his gift-based work continue to flow in. In today's broadcast, we talk all about the Gift Economy, Pay What You Want pricing, how to build and manage a team in the gift economy, and even touch on Adrian's military background and how it's helped him in his new efforts. Seriously, this is one of the most fun interviews I've done and Adrian's story is incredible. You need to listen for your own good :) What Adrian Hoppel and I talk About: Why Adrian left corporate work to pursue his dream of living and working in the gift All about the Gift Economy (and what that means from a practical standpoint) How a little book called Sacred Economics changed Adrian's life How Adrian has tripled his business in just a few months and how he's managing it all What it takes to create a gift-based business where no money or exchange is expected (you're going to be blown away by this, I promise) How Adrian leads a team of employees using gift-economy principles How Adrian once argued with a client for being TOO generous in return for his work (and why he's stopped doing that...good choice!) The specific process Adrian goes through to live and work in the Gift Economy Wise Words from Adrian Hoppel: There is no road map for working in the gift economy.
