Send us a textIn this episode of Financial Planner Life, Chris Ball (CEO of Hoxton Wealth) steps in as host while Terry Smith, CEO of Fundsmith (and often referred to as the UK's answer to Warren Buffet), shares his fascinating journey from a career at Barclays Bank to becoming a widely known financial services disruptor! Starting in banking, he worked his way through various finance roles, gaining life-long insights into investments and markets. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to leave the banking sector, jumping into the world of brokerage despite the shock of his colleagues.Terry discusses his pivotal decision to publish the controversial paper "Accounting for Growth," which ultimately cost him his job and made him "unemployable" but opened the door to entrepreneurship. He reflects on the importance of integrity, emphasising the need for honesty in business, but also makes it clear that he is a capitalist who believes in creating both value and profit.Living in Mauritius and experiencing life as an expat, Terry shares personal stories from managing businesses, including the importance and challenges of building trust with employees. He compares the leadership styles of running a business and managing investment portfolios, pointing out that most people in finance don't excel in both. Does Terry? Throughout the conversation, Terry offers valuable advice to aspiring fund managers, stressing the importance of patience, proper training, and sticking to a disciplined investment approach. He also shares his thoughts on top investment sectors, while reflecting on the moments that shaped his career and how starting Fundsmith brought him the most fulfilment.Begin your financial planning career journey todayWhether you are looking to become a paraplanner, administrator, mortgage and protection adviser or financial planner, the Financial Planner Life Academy is for you. Find out on this week's PlayingFTSE Show! There's lots to talk about on this week's show. Steve and Steve have had a good week in the markets and are dying to talk about it. It's no secret that the London Stock Exchange has been struggling to attract listings lately with the likes of Arm, TUI, and Flutter looking elsewhere. But the FCA has some ideas for how to change this. A raft of measures have been announced including removing market cap restrictions and relaxing profitability requirements, but will any of them work? Steve and Steve have some ideas. Earnings season in the US has kicked off and – as usual – Steve W has been looking at the banking sector. Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and J.P. Morgan have all reported earnings with more to come. Despite beats almost across the board, the stocks are all down. But is a rise in investment banking revenue something for shareholders to get excited about over the next few months and years? Terry Smith has been catching investors up on the progress of Fundsmith's results. The UK's Warren Buffett has been underperforming the S&P 500 – but he has a good reason. Not owning Nvidia has led a lot of investors to miss out on some spectacular returns. But Steve D is doubtful that this is the only reason for the fund's underperformance over the last year. A.J. Barr is a stock we haven't spoken about on the podcast before – at least, not in any depth. But Steve W thinks it might be an interesting opportunity at the moment. As the company embarks on its ‘margin rebuild' programme after a 2022 acquisition, earnings are set to rise. Could that – plus some multiple expansion – generate a 30% return by the end of 2026? We begin this week's episode with a rundown of industrial metal price movements. From copper's boom, Russian sanctions and the price of gold, our commodities correspondent Alex Hamer reveals what investors need to know on all things metal.A change in fate has swept across one of the UK's most well-known and loved funds: Fundsmith Equity. It has not beaten its benchmark for the past three years, bringing a concerning end to its long run as a high-growth fund. Dave Baxter talks about the shifts in the portfolio over the past decade, analyst criticism, Terry Smith's response and more of what readers can expect from this week's cover feature.Last but not least, our senior companies reporter Jennifer Johnson unpacks our result of the week: Asos (ASC). The fast fashion retailer released interim results which show the outlook is still underwhelming. Its plan to reduce unsold merchandise panned out but resulted in falling margins. Is there any hope for the company and those holding it in their portfolio? Our guest today has been referred to as "the English Warren Buffett" for his style and success in investing. His book, published in 1992, Accounting for Growth, and its ensuing controversy helped propel it to the top of the bestsellers chart, displacing Stephen Hawking's 'A Brief History of Time' from the No.1 spot. He's been head of research, CEO of a public company, a former top banks analyst (who won't own a bank in his fund), and is now highly respected Founder and CIO at the global equity fund manager, Fundsmith. Terry details his progress through finance, including how he examines inconsistencies and checks cash flows. He explains why he believes you cannot be successful in investing unless you break out from the crowd. He then describes the genesis of Fundsmith, its mission “to run the best fund ever; by which we mean the one with the highest return over the long term adjusted for risk.” He then details what he looks for in the companies he selects, red lines, distrusting management gloss and why he believes that equities beat bonds over the long term. ► Episode Notes: Who's underperformed Steve D, Steve W, and the S&P 500? Find out on this week's PlayingFTSE Show! With earnings coming through from the US banks, Steve and Steve are thinking about the next few weeks and months. Both are sharing their thoughts on stocks and investing this week. Steve D has been thinking about scandals, Ponzi schemes and central banking in Lebanon. There's a great 25 minute podcast (not ours) for someone else to listen to this week. Steve W has been taking a look at Terry Smith's annual letter to investors. There's a lot in it, in terms of an outlook on AI, a view on investment fees, and some insights on buying stocks at high P/E ratios. Are covered call ETFs something that either Steve would consider investing in? Probably not, but Steve W has an overview of the concept and Steve D has some reasons for sticking to equities, rather than moving into options via an ETF. Progyny is a stock that both Steves have looked at before. But Steve D thinks things have been coming along over the last few years and the stock looks like a viable investment – is there anything to dislike about the company, or is this one of the opportunities of the year? Dalšími tituly jsou Bank of America, American Express, Coca Cola. V posledních letech nakoupil ropné společnosti Chevron a Occidental Petroleum.„V den svých 90. narozenin koupil pět tzv. sogo shosha, to jsou obchodní společnosti, z nichž některé mají historii delší než 100 let,“ uvedl Gladiš. Steve D's avoiding crashes and Paul's going straight down. Welcome to the PlayingFTSE Show! The Autumn Statement is this week's big news and there's a lot in it. Up go taxes (for higher earners anyway) and down goes the Dividend Allowance. There's more money for the NHS and less tax free money for dividend investors. Will it stabilise the UK markets? Is it a good budget? Should we be worried? There's a lot to talk about and the three of us have a lot of different ideas. After that, it's the comparatively trivial matter of $32bn of scandal going on in crypto. We've been staying away from the FTX story so far while it unwinds, but we can ignore the matter no longer. What lessons can we learn from the shambles? And what happens next for Sam Bankman-Fried? In happier news, it's 13F season again. Warren Buffett's been to the shops and bought himself a decent piece of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company which both is and isn't on-brand for the Oracle of Omaha. Something else has been catching Steve W's eye, though, as everyone ponders the semiconductor manufacturing play… Lastly, there's the UK's Warren Buffett. He's been buying a lot of things. None of them is Meta Platforms, despite its share price being down significantly. One of them, though, is Apple, which Fundsmith has been staying away from fairly carefully. Is this change of heart welcome? Find out on this week's PlayingFTSE podcast!

This week we look at the latest inflation update and how markets reacted to that surprise dip, and preview next week's big economic announcements. We also cover the news that renowned investor Terry Smith is closing the emerging markets fund he launched eight years ago. Tom Selby is on to talk about the great ‘un-retirement' of over-65s returning to work after the exodus during covid. And Dan Coatsworth explores how you can invest in cybersecurity, as more companies look to protect themselves from hacking. Elsewhere, with savers finally getting a better return on their money, Laura Suter has some news for people who want to save in a green way. But she also shares a warning: that the extra interest savers are earning might come with an unexpected tax hit.
Kyle Caldwell and Sam Benstead discuss the latest fund and investment trust news; including recent research from Morningstar that debunked the widely held view that funds with a large amount of assets underperform small funds. The duo also discuss investment trust gearing, and F&C Investment Trust's promotion to the FTSE 100. Later in the podcast, Sam interviews Gerrit Smit, fund manager of Stonehage Fleming Global Best Ideas Equity. It is a strategy where comparisons can be drawn to Fundsmith Equity – it invests in high-quality growth shares, has low turnover and is highly concentrated with fewer than 30 stocks. Sam and Gerrit discuss finding great companies, what a recession might mean for earnings of so-called quality companies, and why fund performance has been disappointing this year. This week's Money & Markets looks at the big rotation that's happening in markets, as the tech giants fall out of favour and banking stocks are back in vogue. We talk to AJ Bell's Ryan Hughes about what this means for big funds like Scottish Mortgage and Fundsmith, and how investors should react. We also hear from Temple Bar's Ian Lance about the stocks that have been benefitting from this switch. Dan Coatsworth and Tom Sieber are back with the European edition of their Round the World investing series, talking to Sam Morse from Fidelity about the region's prospects. Elsewhere Laura Suter looks at some surprising figures on how many first-time buyers have been getting on the property ladder. And the team have a very exciting announcement and competition for the listeners. So make sure you don't miss that.
In the final podcast of the year, Laura Suter, Dan Coatsworth and Tom Sieber discuss how investors fared in 2021, and pick out the year's best and worst performing investment trusts. Looking forward to 2022, we also round up leading fund managers – including Blue Whale's Stephen Yiu and Michael O'Brien from Fundsmith – to talk about the stocks they're putting their money behind. Jenny Owen is back with Mad Money, looking at the millions you could have made investing in mad trends this year. And Dan and Tom get misty-eyed looking back at the great investment stories of the year, including Dan's favourite clothes shop soaring and Elon Musk's ridiculous antics.
Terry Smith, founder and chief executive of Fundsmith, has built the UK's largest actively-managed fund via rigorous implementation of the simple mantra 'buy good companies, don't overpay, do nothing'.In this interview, Smith tells Mary McDougall how he analyses and selects companies, how the rise of software has folded into his investment thinking and what trends he thinks currently look most promising. He also talks about the extent to which fund size is a challenge going forward, and what spurred him to buy Amazon (US:AMZN) this summer.Fundsmith Equity Fund has delivered an annualised total return of 18.4 per cent since its inception in November 2010, compared with 12.8 per cent for its benchmark MSCI World Index. It had assets under management of £27.9bn on 30 November 2021. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Could you get duped into sending a fraudster thousands of pounds? Many people think of course they wouldn’t, but then it happens to them. In this week’s podcast Simon Lambert, Lee Boyce and Georgie Frost look into the disturbing rise in fraudsters targeting ordinary people’s finances and how you can protect yourself – we also ask if the banks do enough to help. On the other side of the table from those looking to take your money, are the people who promise to make it for you – fund managers. And there has been one name that keeps cropping up in This is Money’s reader comments as someone who doesn’t get his fair dues, Terry Smith. We dive into his Fundsmith fund, why it has been so successful and having had it explained to him first hand by Mr Smith himself, Simon outlines the Fundsmith investing philosophy. He looks at whether investors need to be wary of putting too much faith in an approach that has done well if conditions change, or whether the top global funds run by managers such as Smith, Nick Train and the Baillie Gifford team are worth sticking with come what may. Also up on this week’s podcast is the best car of the year as named by What Car? – and it’s a diesel – and Lee’s once in a lifetime trip to the home of Ikea in Sweden, where he learnt some very interest facts about the flatpack furniture store you either love or hate.
