Voice actor JP Karliak (Morph in X-Men '97, Gargamel and Razamel in Smurfs) joins us for a fascinating discussion about how nerdy media shapes our understanding of identity, community, and civic participation. As founder of Queer Vox, a nonprofit supporting LGBTQIA+ voice actors, and co-founder of NerdsVote, which works to get nerds involved in democracy, JP brings a unique perspective on how superhero stories and geek culture can serve as gateways to uncomfortable but necessary conversations about representation and social change.Key Discussion Points:How voice actors can use their "notable nerd" status to mobilize fan communities toward civic engagementWhy nerddom inherently connects to empathy and understanding otherness, particularly through franchises like X-MenWhat authentic casting means for LGBTQIA+ characters beyond performative diversityWhy seeking only comfort in entertainment prevents engagement with different perspectivesThe essential role of discomfort in growth and understandingJP brings depth and nuance to these topics through his experience voicing Morph, a non-binary shapeshifter in X-Men '97, while sharing insights about the voice acting industry and the importance of authentic representation both in front of and behind the microphone. The conversation weaves through representation, activism, and the power of storytelling to create change, ultimately highlighting how superhero narratives can serve as modern mythology that helps us process and progress through today's most challenging social issues.Guest Bio:JP Karliak is a veteran voice actor whose characters span animation, gaming, and anime. Notable roles include Morph in X-Men '97, Gargamel and Razamel in Smurfs (2025), Boss Baby in Netflix series, and the Joker in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. In anime, he's known for voicing Kozo Fuyutsuki in Netflix's Neon Genesis Evangelion dub. His gaming credits include N. Tropy in Crash Bandicoot titles and Wolfgang in the Skylanders series. As founder of Queer Vox and co-founder of NerdsVote, JP actively works to create positive change in both the voiceover industry and civic engagement.Connect with JP:WebsiteInstagramQueer VoxNerdsVote**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're back to full strength this week and we've got all sorts of gaming goodies to dig into, so let's get things rolling... Randall kicks things off with an update on his time with Yakuza 0, which was his resolution game for this year. After that, John rolls into a couple of shooters with a roguelike twist that he's been putting some time into lately — including Roboquest & the Splatoon 3: Side Order DLC. Finally, Kevin wraps things up with a trio of PS4 games that he recently scooped up from the game shops in his area — including Geometry Wars 3, Dead Rising, and Crash Bandicoot 4. King of the Hill gets a long runway; Bobby's adulthood could anchor future stories. Clayface leans into practical effects and horror that fits Reeves' Gotham. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow works best centered on Kara with smart flashbacks. Quotes "This doesn't feel like Goonies anymore. This feels like a finale." "Toho can get weird. Following months of swirling rumors, Halo Combat Evolved has its remake. It's called Halo Campaign Evolved and you can play it next year on Xbox, PC, and yes, even PlayStation! It has everything from sprinting to aiming down sights, but more surprising is the new content found within. Cutscenes have been entirely reshot, new prequel missions are being added to the game, new weapons are getting thrown in there, and even the warthog saw an expansion to it. Cog and Gene had the opportunity to go hands-on with a demo of this remake and the takeaways are what you'd expect from a Halo Studios led project. Indeed, it's the familiar cocktail of optimism for what's in front of you and lingering skepticism from the thing you just got. it looks like the console wars really are officially over, as Halo will be launching on PlayStation in 2026. Crash Bandicoot is getting an animated series at Netflix with WildBrain partnering on production. Expect a bright, slapstick tone that leans into classic Crash chaos, with Cortex likely in the villain seat and a deep bench of side characters. We talk why Netflix is a strong home for game adaptations, how this compares to earlier attempts, and what details still need to be announced like casting and a showrunner. This is a nostalgia win for longtime players and an easy on-ramp for kids who are meeting Crash for the first time. 00:00 Crash Bandicoot series announced for Netflix, WildBrain on board00:12 Tone expectations: silly, slapstick, colorful, classic Crash energy00:17 Appeal for families and longtime players00:29 Earlier TV attempt that stalled and why Netflix is a better fit00:34 Track record of game adaptations on Netflix00:45 What we are watching next: casting and showrunner newsNetflix is developing a Crash Bandicoot animated series with WildBrain, aiming for high-energy slapstick and bold visuals. The show targets a wide audience, pairing kid-friendly fun with nostalgia for fans who grew up with the games.A prior version was explored elsewhere but did not move forward, which makes Netflix's infrastructure and history with game adaptations a promising sign.Big open questions remain, including voice cast, showrunner, and release timing. If Netflix taps into Cortex, Crash, and the extended roster of allies and foes, the series has room for episodic humor and fan-service deep cuts.“Crash Bandicoot is coming to Netflix… it should be silly slapstick, very colorful.”“Kids are going to dig it and the parents are going to be like, oh yeah, I played that game.”“We've seen Netflix take video game properties and turn them into really successful animations.”“The next thing we're looking for is casting and who's going to be the showrunner.”“I'm always down for nostalgia.”Enjoy the episode?
This week on the Game Deflators Podcast, John and Ryan dive into a whirlwind of gaming goodness. Ryan returns from PAX West 2025 with fresh impressions, indie highlights, and a few surprises from the show floor. Meanwhile, John wraps up his journey through Final Fantasy VI with final thoughts on its legacy and storytelling, then jumps into the lush, emotional world of Neva PS5 for a first look at its gameplay and tone. The duo also share their latest Magic: The Gathering pickups—expect cardboard envy and collector chatter—and break down the latest De Minimis deals from Video Games Plus (VGP) and PlayAsia, including some niche finds and import oddities. And for this week's retro review, it's time to spin, slide, and smash through Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back on the PlayStation 1. Is it still a platforming gem, or has nostalgia clouded our judgment? Want more Game Deflators content? Neue Retrorunde, neues Genre! Was macht heute noch Spaß, was weniger? Benedikt & Andy

Three PlayStation classics enter the brodown arena this time! Tom dusts off an old, obscure reference to defend his take on why Klonoa's boss battles were the best. Pete makes his case for Tomba's sound and music and encourages listeners to check out the songs on YouTube.Let us know which of these three games is your favorite by voting and commenting on any of our social platforms.Follow us onX @BrosBossBattlesYouTube @BrosBossBattlesInstagram @BrosBossBattleshttps://brothersandbossbattles.com/
We wrap up our 2.5D platformer category with Sony's iconic mascot. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back was developed by Naughty Dog and released on November 6, 1997 for the PlayStation. The brothers have a hard time realizing that they are actually agreeing with each other when talking about the 2.5D elements of the game. Ant issues a warning about the responsiveness of 30 year old PlayStation controllers and the safety of your TV. Pete reveals that he went on YouTube to watch the game's loading screens. This week the brothers ask which vehicle from the game would you rather ride to get to where you needed to go? A jetpack, a water jetboard, or a polar bear.Follow us onX @BrosBossBattlesYouTube @BrosBossBattlesInstagram @BrosBossBattleshttps://brothersandbossbattles.com/

I agree with everyone that says this game is stunning to look at and the soundtrack is superb. It's creative and tells a story. Honestly, I like almost everything about Okami. Except, playing it... It definitely has some Zelda DNA in it and that isn't a bad thing at all. You're solving puzzles, acquiring power-ups, running through fields. You get to play as a wolf which is rad. I just didn't find the actual gameplay mechanics that interesting. The paintbrush mechanic is sic, but I feel it was under utilized. The combat is kinda boring. And while the writing is really solid (and funny), there's just a little too much of it. My buddy Bradley McCue returns to the show this week. He's a Zelda diehard and liked Okami a little more than I did. I thought it was a work of art that I just didn't want to play, whereas Bradley thought it lived up to the Zelda DNA coursing through its veins. We had a pretty good discussion about this one, so whether you love this game or not, I hope/think you'll enjoy this episode. And before we try to get Issun laid, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what console has the best ratio of good games to bad in its library? What are my favourite video game quotes? And have I ever turned anything really cool down in my careers as a comedian or podcaster? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 great games where you play as animals: Donkey Kong Country, Sonic 2, and Crash Bandicoot. Read transcriptGet ready to tattoo the number XIII on your memory banks (preferably not on your collarbone) as Play Comics dives into the cel-shaded, amnesia-riddled world of XIII – the video game adaptation that brought Jean Van Hamme's acclaimed French graphic novel series to life on PS2, Xbox, and GameCube. This first-person shooter might be the only game where waking up on a beach with complete memory loss is just the beginning of your problems, not the end result of a gaming convention afterparty. This week, we're joined by the phenomenally talented Rob Duenas from the Sketchcraft YouTube channel, whose artistic prowess has graced everything from the hellish battlegrounds of “Spawn Kills Every Spawn” to beloved video game franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Overwatch. When Rob isn't busy making comic pages look absolutely stunning or designing characters for your favorite games, he's dropping knowledge bombs about art and creativity on his channel that would make even the most amnesia-addled protagonist remember how to hold a pencil. Together, we'll untangle the conspiracy-laden plot that had gamers frantically searching for their own identity while taking down government agents with stylized comic book “BANG!” and “BOOM!” sound effects popping up on screen. Was this 2003 cel-shaded shooter as revolutionary as its artistic style suggested, or did it wash up on gaming shores only to be quickly forgotten? Does the console version you played actually matter, or were the loading time differences just another conspiracy to keep Xbox owners feeling superior? And most importantly, how does a game based on a graphic novel series about a character who can't remember who he is manage to create such memorable gameplay? Grab your favorite tattered map with cryptic clues, practice your best “I have no idea who I am but I can somehow expertly use military weapons” face, and join us for an episode more twisty-turny than XIII's plot itself! Learn such things as: Does it matter if nobody knows that the comic source material exists? Does it matter if the art style is totally changed up from how the comic looks? Can a game be released on too many consoles? Will Chris Baker come in and answer my question? And so much more! You can find Rob on on YouTube @Sketchcraft or his website Sketchcraft which has links to whatever social media places are still alive this week. I'm a pretty big fan of action-platform games, especially some of the classics such as Donkey Kong Country, Crash Bandicoot, and others. The game developers at VEA Games feel the same way as they've made a personal love letter to those titles with the release of Nikoderiko: The Magical World - Director's Cut.
We skip the first Wednesday of the month to give me time to pay the games for RTG, but fortunately we have a backlog of about 1,000 podcasts on Patreon to draw from to fill in the gaps. And this week, we're turning the nostalgia knob all the way up and looking back at the first console I ever bought with my own money, and the one that changed the gaming landscape forever, the original Sony PlayStation. Anyone that was around in the 90's remembers what a big deal this thing was. Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Crash Bandicoot, Resident Evil, Spyro; the list goes on and on. I love this system as much as the rest of you, so we dedicated an entire podcast to blowing smoke up its memory card slot. Learn more about your ad choices.
