This episode is a special one. I sat down with the inspiring Roxanne Glaser—artist, educator, and creator of whimsical nature-inspired doodles—to talk about what it really means to live a creative life.We dive into some deeply personal and powerful topics, like how Roxanne used art to process profound grief after experiencing unimaginable loss and how her creative practice became a tool for healing and self-discovery. We talk about the challenges of having too many choices in creativity (I know I've felt that paralysis!) and how gentle self-discipline and limitations can actually set us free to create more authentically. This conversation is packed with takeaways about building a sustainable creative practice, embracing the seasons of your life, and creating art for yourself—not for external validation.I've also created something special for you to deepen the impact of this episode: the Creative Warrior Activation Sheet, a guided exercise to help you connect with your inner creative warrior and discover how to embrace your unique creative journey. It's available exclusively for my Patreon supporters, and I can't wait for you to try it out. What You'll Walk Away With:How creativity can be a tool for healing, meditation, and self-expression.Why creativity is often born from struggle and necessity. The surprising freedom that comes with setting limitations in your creative practice. The importance of daily practices—no matter how small—and how they can transform your creative life. Why loss can be a powerful clarifier for what matters most in art and life. How to let go of perfectionism and start creating for yourself. Why creativity evolves with the seasons of your life and how to embrace that process. This episode is a beautiful reminder that we are all unique instruments in the creative process, and the magic happens when we honour that.If you've been feeling stuck creatively or wondering how to start building a practice that supports you through life's challenges, I've created something special for you. You and I are artists. Trust me on this. No matter what label you attach to your work. You paint your gifts on some form of canvas. Your art may be an architectural monument or a movement for a cleaner community. Your magic might be a precious family or starting a business that will enrich all consumers. I may not know what your artwork is yet I do know you have some natural and unusual form of genius within you. And to ignore it because people might not like what it is you do or because you could stumble as you pursue your summit not only denies us your light, it hurts your soul. And so yes, you too will—at times—grow tired. And weary. And perhaps even frightened and feel like giving up. It happens to me too.  All I know is that your treasure will often be sitting ten steps from the place where you feel like retreating. My latest book “The Wealth Money Can't Buy” is full of fresh ideas and original tools that I'm absolutely certain will cause quantum leaps in your positivity, productivity, wellness, and happiness. Years later, an accomplished illustrator, designer, and provocateur of the status quo, he returned to that very school, but this team, to teach is own perpetually-packed class. The world is moving deeper into the digital world and at an alarmingly fast pace. As a result, today's technology has leveled the business playing field. In this fast-moving virtual age, establishing a strong personal brand has become a critical part of being a Creative Warrior. Whether it's on or offline, your personal brand is about giving people in your community a choice. When you can be pure and clear about your values, product or services, and you why are most memorable, you will be giving your community the opportunity to choose you. Furthermore, the virtual age has brought upon the need for more skills, dexterity, and understanding of how AI can enhance your brand and what you do. The Creative Warrior community is made up of misfits; we're people who think differently than our peers and often feel like outsiders looking in. It's common to want to change the traits that make us different, but it's precisely those special qualities that will make us the most successful in business and life. So how can we learn to embrace our imperfections? There is no step-by-step guide to success. In fact, following a guru or guidebook can stifle the gifts that we have to offer the world. To uncover your unique traits, you're going to have to think outside the box. Look at the things that other people consider weaknesses, and see if they're the things that set you apart. To dive deeper into figuring out your “Rare Breed,” I've brought on author and brand expert Sunny Bonnell. Sonny was named GDUSA “Top 25 People to Watch” and is an Inc. columnist. She's also the co-founder of Motto, one of the top branding and digital agencies in the country that works with disruptors and innovators to build the next generation of brands. To learn about the seven vices-turned-virtues, download this episode now. THE WARRIOR OF COURAGE   “Either ‘no' becomes the answer, or ‘no' becomes the challenge.” - Sunny Bonnell Highlights - Remember the fire in your belly.  Be a “rare breed.” How do you make your vices a virtue? 7 Rare Breed Traits: rebellious, audacious, obsessed, hot-blooded weird, hypnotic, and emotional. The reason you're hired is often the reason that you're fired. You can own your “rare breed” traits in a quietly rebellious way. There are four questions to ask yourself: The first is, “What am I rebelling against?” It's important to have a cause. “What needs to change?” You often have to be broke before you start feeling the need to make funny. “What do I have that no one else has?” Take the first step towards owning your voice and hearing your voice. “What's the worst that can happen?” You would rather spend a life that you fought for something. I've never had a guest on to talk about a memoir, but I thought Jane Pollak's journey would be beneficial for the Creative Warrior community. Jane was a successful artist decorating eggs bought by people like Steve Jobs and featured at The White House, but ultimately she wasn't happy. She decided that she could no longer settle for a life of not enough. As creative professionals, we have to be proactive agents in our lives instead of victims of circumstance. If you're feeling that you're experiencing “too much of not enough,” you can let go of what isn't serving you. When you know in your gut that you can't do it anymore, it's the beginning of living a life of enough. Jane Pollak is an author, coach, blogger, coach, and speaker. She inspires people to create income pursuing their passions.  She graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a BA in studio art and theatre and an MA in art education from Columbia University Teachers College. Her first book, Decorating Eggs: Exquisite Designs with Wax & Dye, was recently republished by Schiffer Publishing. Her second book, Soul Proprietor: 101 Lessons from a Lifestyle Entrepreneur (Crossing Press, 2001), shares what she learned as a home-based business owner who successfully turned her passion into a thriving company. When Pollak's marriage ended in 2011, she moved back to Manhattan, where she currently resides contentedly single. She has three grown children and three grandchildren. To learn how to become a proactive agent of your own life, download this episode now. THE FUTURE SELF WARRIOR   “You can only go as far in your business as you've developed in your life.” - Jane Pollak Highlights - Because of Jane's withholding mother, she thought she had to settle for whatever love and attention was given to her. She was getting by with “crumbs.” You have to select your own teachers and guides. Hustle vs. Self Care: pay attention to what you want in life and what wants you. Desire what you have. In today's world companies have to be transparent - whether they like it or not. If you try to hide things, consumers will find it and use any avenue they can to exploit it. Most recently you've seen this from Facebook and Uber. Luckily, there's a lot you can do to protect yourself. The first thing you need to understand is that every business will face a crisis at some point. Sometimes it's because of an employee, sometimes it's because of a claim that is simply not true (of which I discuss my experience in this episode.) Knowing this ahead of time means that you can take a proactive step through crisis preparedness. By having all of your ducks in a row, you can be ready for anything to come along. Know that pleading the 5th amendment doesn't cut it anymore. Consumers will take action and a moral stance. That's why you need to make sure you have a crisis manager on your team - and be aware that a PR person is not a crisis manager. To go into how you can protect yourself, I brought in an expert to help my Creative Warriors: Melissa Agnes. Melissa Agnes is a leading authority on crisis preparedness, reputation management, and brand protection. She is a coveted speaker, commentator, and advisor to some of today's leading organizations faced with the greatest risks. As a strategic advisor and keynote speaker, Melissa Agnes has worked with NATO, Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense, financial firms, technology companies, healthcare organizations, cities and municipalities, law enforcement agencies, global non-profits, and many others, helping them understand risk and build invincible brands that can withstand even the most devastating of events. In 2015, she gave a TEDx talk in Los Angeles where she discussed the secret to successful crisis management in the 21st century. She is the editor of the Crisis Ready Blog, a contributor to Forbes, and a go-to source for the press, with recent coverage including the Wall Street Journal, VIBE Magazine, USA Today, and many others. As a university guest lecturer, Agnes teaches crisis management in university courses around the world, including at NYU and McGill. Download this episode now to learn how you can start protecting yourself from a crisis today. WARRIOR OF INNER STRENGTH “Issues create opportunities.” -Melissa Agnes Highlights - Good things can come from a crisis. A PR person is not the same as a crisis manager. Try not to hire someone when you are emotional. Facebook is a great example of not being crisis ready. Consumers are taking a moral stance today. You have an opportunity to show up to the world more aligned with your values than corporations. Communication is essential when dealing with a crisis. You can't trump emotions with logic. Being crisis ready will give you peace of mind. Guest Contact - Melissa's Website Melissa's Twitter Melissa's Book Melissa's Free Gift! Being an entrepreneur - you always hear how important it is to know your “why". The truth is, you probably have several "whys". We all do, we all have more than one goal and a purpose behind it. What can be just as important, if not even more so, is your "why not". It can be pretty simple to know what your driving force is to want to do something - but we rarely analyze what is holding is back. What is it that keeps us at a standstill? You need to know why it is that you are feeling stagnant and why your goals are still just that. Sometimes your "why not" might be internal. It may be a fear of success or a fear of instability. Other times it may be a a lack of money, resources, or strong enough network. No matter what it is, you must identify the problem. Once you've clarified that, then you can begin to create solutions to allow you to make progress quickly and efficiently. Just like your "why", your "why not" can change - or more may appear along your route to success. Because of that, you need to continually reevaluate your current situation. To dive deeper into this concept, I've brought on an expert who literally wrote the book on the power of "whys", "hows", and "why nots":  Corey Poirier. Corey Poirier is a multiple-time TEDx, MoMondays and PMx, Speaker. He is also the host of the top-rated ‘Conversations with PASSION' Radio Show, founder of The Speaking Program, and he has been featured in multiple television specials. A columnist with Entrepreneur and Forbes, he has featured in/on CBS, CTV, NBC, and ABC, and is one of the few leaders featured twice on the popular Entrepreneur on Fire show. He has also interviewed over 4,000 of the world's top leaders. One of his most recent talks took him to New York City where he had the extreme pleasure of speaking to At-Risk Youth at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Boys & Girls Club. Download this episode today to learn how you can overcome your "why nots" and finally get on the road to where you want to be with as little friction as possible. THE LASSO WARRIOR “Now truly is as good a time as any to make your magic in the world.” - Corey Poirier Highlights - We all have many “whys”. Passion is what you do. Purpose is why you do it. It's important to identify your “why not”. We all have more opportunity now than ever before. Your success can be determined by how quickly you can absorb and then apply new knowledge. We are bombarded with information, but it can be difficult to find the true nuggets of wisdom. Technology changes, but values don't. You can work hard AND smart. One of the biggest problems creatives have is finding ways to get their products and services in front of an audience. A lot of people just aren't wired for marketing. Luckily, there's an option that will fit literally any industry you are in: podcasting. Obviously you listen to podcasts (you listen to mine) so why aren't you on them sharing your story? There's no quicker and easier way to get in front of an audience that aligns with you. It doesn't cost money to guest on other people's podcasts, and it'll make sure all of your efforts are getting you in front of the right people. Also, if you've ever thought about starting your own podcast I don't suggest diving right in. Being a host comes at a large cost, and it requires a LOT of time and devotion most people just don't have. Fun fact, most podcasts stop after only 7 episodes. To avoid being adding to a negative statistic, being a guest is also a great way to test the waters and see if it's really an endeavor you want to embark upon. To go further into this, I brought in THE top expert on podcast guesting: Tom Schwab. Tom is the founder of Interview Valet, the category king of Podcast Interview Marketing. Tom knows how to build an online business. Marketing at its heart is starting a conversation with someone who could be an ideal customer. Drawing on his engineering, corporate, and e-commerce inbound marketing experience, Tom helps thought leaders (coaches, authors, speaker, emerging brands) get featured on leading podcasts their ideal prospects are already listening to. Then he helps them to turn listeners into customers. Download this episode today, and learn how you can start taking advantage of this powerful marketing technique today. THE WISDOM WARRIOR “If you are speaking to everyone, you are speaking to no one.” - Tom Schwab Highlights - Always look for new tools, and WHY they are used. Podcasting has a niche for everything you can think of. Some of the best results can come from being on smaller podcasts. Think of iTunes as a search engine. If you want to start a podcast, guesting is a great way to test the water. Being on podcasts can help with backlinking. It's easy to repurpose podcasts to create more content. The role of a guest is to make the host look like a genius for having you there. When you are a guest, come prepared and stay on message. Podcasts are becoming “on demand radio.” What you know could help somebody. I'm sure you've heard a lot of people preach about how you need to find your niche. Although this is true, as an entrepreneur you want to make sure you find your niche. By that I mean your area of expertise. Although you want to be able to identify your audience, you don't want to close yourself off from other business opportunities. For example, if Amazon had been called Online Books for Cheap, they would have significantly reduced their ability to pivot. A study has shown that about three quarters of all businesses make a pivot within their first two to three years, so you want to make sure you give yourself the ability to. I imagine you're next question is, “How do I know when it's time to pivot?” To be honest, you'll know through analysis. Take the time to sit back, look over your business, your industry, and even do a bit of self reflection. Once you have a strong analysis, now comes the time to play. Let your creative side take over. Don't use your stats to go to an obvious place. Use your creativity to play with where you think things are going. Where you think you are going. To dive more into this, I brought on an expert in balancing your creative and analytical side to achieve the most success possible: Marc Gruber. Marc Gruber is a world-leading researcher in the domain of innovation, entrepreneurship and technology commercialization. He is Vice President for Innovation at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he also heads the Chair of Entrepreneurship & Technology Commercialisation. He works as the Deputy Editor for the #1 empirical research journal in management, the Academy of Management Journal. He received multiple ‘Thought Leader' awards for his breakthrough research. Gruber is actively engaged in teaching, consulting, and executive training programmes in Europe, the United States, and Asia, and regularly acts as a jury member in start-up and corporate entrepreneurship competitions across Europe. Download this episode now, no matter how long you've been in business, to learn when and how you can make the pivots you need to. WARRIOR OF CREATIVITY   “You have to be agile and you have to be focused.” -Marc Gruber Highlights - Entrepreneurs need to carefully choose where to play. You can learn a lot by analysis and reflection. There are a lot of business opportunities out there waiting to be discovered. You can combine analysis and creativity to come to a variable outcome. 73% of all new ventures have to pivot in the first 2-3 years. Your niche is your area of expertise, not a specific market. Develop an attractiveness map. Think about a broader brand name to give you more options in the future. It's never too late to pause and reevaluate your business. Take the time to really study your market. Making a pivot is usually not as drastic as it may seem. Find new ways to compete with others. One of the most important things you can do in this world is discover your purpose. It's really heartbreaking when an entrepreneur spends decades building a business that's something they don't care about. They start to feel burned out, and are too scared to try anything else because they've become dependant on the income that's been created. The good news is, you can start making sure your business' purpose lines up with your personal purpose at any time: and the sooner the better. You do that through brand identity. This is where you explore exactly what your business is and how you communicate it to your target consumer.By knowing what you stand for, and what your company is all about allows you to make the changes you may feel are necessary. And don't be afraid of change. It's important in every business. The world is constantly changing, and any business that's been around for decades has had to make changes to fit into this constantly evolving world. On this episode of Creative Warriors, I am joined by branding expert Gregory Diehl. Gregory Diehl is the author of multiple Amazon best-selling books on identity development for businesses and individuals. He is also the founder of Identity Publications, an organization that produces and publishes meaningful books containing ideas that matter. Download this episode today to learn how you can find purpose in your business that will make your personal life feel fulfilled. WARRIOR OF DETERMINATION   “The last thing you want is to find success in something you don't actually care about.” -Gregory Diehl Highlights - The point of brand identity is for people to know if they love you or hate you. You need to know what you are trying to communicate right away. There's not only a personal purpose, but also a purpose in your business. Ask what changes you need to make to maintain your success. You can turn something you don't care about into something you care about. Be the kind of person who works towards mastery of their environment. We make decisions, not based on reality, but based on the stories of how we see things. Know the stories happening in the minds of your customers. Empathy is the bridge between two stories. The role of a business is to trade something of value for something of higher value. Your customers are looking for an increase in happiness and value according to their perspectives. Break through your limitations on how big your brand can be. Don't assume there is only so much you can do. Running a business is a lot like playing sports. Now, I'm not a big sports guy myself, but I certainly respect the passion and drive that athletes have. One of the most important things that sports does right, which a lot of businesses fall short on, is having the support from others. Entrepreneurs tend to try to do it all themselves, which in the beginning is a necessity. As your business starts to grow, though, it quickly becomes a team sport. You need to know who to have that makes up for your weakness, and who who you can pass the ball to when it's required. More importantly, at any phase of a business (just like any athlete) a business really needs a coach. In sports there are always multiple coaches for one team, and your business should run the same way. Even in solo sports, like Tennis, athletes have coaches to make sure their game is as good as it can be - and they look for problems that the athlete may not see. You should be doing the same. A coach is a great thing to have, no matter how big your business is right now. It's always great to have an extra set of eyes to show us what we can improve on. The last things athletes do that's truly remarkable is seeing things through to the end. Even if they know they are going to lose a game, they finish it. They do it, not because they have to, but because they can always continue to learn - even if there's no hope. In business this is a little trickier. We don't have a clear ending, but we need to know when is the right time to move one. When we're done learning and the game is over for us.On this episode of Creative Warriors, I brought in someone who really knows what it means to see things through to the end: Christopher Wirth. Christopher is the Founder and President of No Quit Living.  NQL is a Speaking, Coaching and Training Company that focuses on a number of topics, such as: Accountability, Goals, Time Maximization, Networking, Leadership, Sales, Personal Development and Mentoring No Quit Living works with individuals, families, teams and corporations to help improve accountability, effectiveness and efficiency.  Christopher aims to motivate and inspire his clients to never give up on themselves, their dreams or their goals. After playing both Basketball and Tennis in College, Christopher began his coaching career as an AAU Basketball Coach (Amateur Athletic Union), Collegiate Basketball Coach, as well as High School Basketball Coach.   Download this episode today and learn how you can live a life filled with accomplishments. THE NO QUIT WARRIOR    “No matter what happens to you, you can always attack it with a positive attitude.” - Chris Wirth Highlights - You always have the choice to stay positive, even if bad situations. Always reverse engineer wherever you are looking to go. Just like in sports, businesses need a good coach to be successful. There's no need to have only one coach. Starting your day by looking at your phone puts you in a reactive mindset, instead of a proactive one. In some ways you're alone, but you always have the ability to reach out to a mentor. Be in a place that helps motivate and inspires. You always have the ability to learn. It's not quitting if you give it your full effort, and everything you have. Always be open to listening to other people. Use the “waffle method” of goal setting. My greatest source of inspiration is other people. You can always find positive information, if you look for it. One of the things that holds many people back is a fear of becoming "that person." As if getting recognition or having financial success is going to inherently change who you are. Sure, perhaps it does for some people. But if you are kind-hearted, person-driven in the first place, it's unlikely success is going to change you into someone you're not proud of. Often, quite the opposite. Financial success can free you to do your best work and give back. In today's marketing world, recognition is also often necessary. Or, as I like to say, "recognition is a strategy, not a goal." The Talking Stick is in your hands now. Let us hear from you. Do you ever feel ignored if you are out to eat with someone and they keep checking their phone? Does it make you feel insecure? Well, you're not alone. We all feel that way. Today it seems like everyone pays attention to their device and not the world around them. It's an addiction not many people are addressing, but lucky for you this can easily play in your favor as an entrepreneur. To build stronger relationship (whether personal or business) all you have to do is put your phone away. Wear a watch so you're not tempted to pull it out. When you do this, you're instantly going to show the person you are with that you care more than the majority of our modern world. When you do that, you'll build loyalty. They will appreciate the fact that you are appreciating them and their time. It honestly goes a long way, and will pay you back in many ways. It's such a simple thing to do, yet we've lost that genuine connection to our phones. To go more into this, I have a special guest today: Neen James. Neen James is the author of Folding Time and Attention Pays. In 2017, she was named one of the top 30 Leadership Speakers by Global Guru because of her work with companies like Viacom, Comcast, and Abbot Pharmaceuticals among others. Neen has boundless energy, is quick-witted and always offers powerful strategies for paying attention to what matters so you can get more done and create more significant moments at work and home. Neen is the kind of speaker that engages, educates, entertains, and delivers the real-world solutions that apply in your organization, your home, and your community. She also provides one-on-one consulting in a variety of leadership topics and loves serving her audiences. Download this episode to learn all about her insights and how you can increase your revenue through your attention to others. WARRIOR OF LIGHT     “Choose consciously, act deliberately, and invest transformationally.” - Neen James Highlights - We are constantly distracted and have made technology more important than people. Because of devices, 9-5 became 24/7. Listen with your eyes. Attention is about connecting at a deeper level. Focus is an activity that needs to be completed. Retaining customers and talented employees requires you to pay attention. Instead of being busy, be productive. Always consider who you are with and what you are trying to achieve. Try to keep your devices out of sight. Move from unconscious attention to conscious attention. Work/life integration is different for everyone. Educate the people around you about your work/life integration. Make sure your actions are aligned with the choices you want to make. It's just as important to know what to say no to as it is what to say yes to. Think about the impact you make as an individual contributor. The Self-Employed Life

All of us entrepreneurs have heard about the importance of building a brand. What you're not hearing enough is the importance of building a personal brand. People don't follow a brand, they follow the founder. They don't think SpaceX, Virgin, or Apple. They tend to think Elon Musk, Richard Branson, and Steve Jobs. That's where you want to be. You want people to think of, because that's when your business will become change proof. Starting a new business doesn't mean starting from the ground up. You'll have a strong base audience that will support anything you take on. The biggest thing to remember when trying to become a Youpreneur is that you have to be authentic. Don't copy people like Gary V, or Tim Ferris. Find your own originality: and do that by throwing yourself out there and beta testing what you think the audience wants. They will give you feedback, and that's how you'll be able to hone in on what they need and how you can really serve them. To dive deeper into the subject of personal branding and becoming a Youpreneur, I've brought on the man who wrote the book on the subject: Chris Ducker. Chris is a serial entrepreneur and author of the bestsellers, “Virtual Freedom”, and more recently, “Rise of the Youpreneur”. Based in Cambridge, England, he owns and operates several businesses, that combined house over 450 full-time employees internationally. He's also a trusted international business mentor, keynote speaker, podcaster, blogger, as well as the founder of Youpreneur.com - the leading personal brand business education company in the world. Chris hosts the annual Youpreneur Summit, which is held in London, U.K. each November and is the self-proclaimed ‘Proudest Brit' doing business online! Download this episode today and learn how you can build a brand that will hold up to any kind of economic change by having an audience that will support any of your endeavors. HEALTH AND FITNESS WARRIOR     “If you treat it like a hobby, you're not going to make any money at all.” -Chris Ducker Highlights - Everybody has a personal brand: monetize and market it properly. It's how you handle change that will make you the person you become. When you build a business of you, nobody can copy it. Building a personal brand will allow you to be future proof. People know the founders more than the company they run. People want to do business with other people. It all starts by knowing who you are and what you want to be known for. If you do everything you are great it, you'll become somebody's favorite. Like is not enough anymore. You've gotta be loved. Have a beta mindset so you can get feedback from others. You have to be a genuine authority for people to want to pay you. Always keep a backup of the content you create. Build out on what you control. An original is always worth more than a copy. Ever feel like you're not smart enough for business? That maybe you don't have the IQ you need? To be honest, it's not about your IQ. It's about your emotional intelligence. Let's face it, most business isn't conducted with logic: it's conducted with feelings. If you can unlock that emotional intelligence, you can tap into what really makes your customers tick. You'll be able to pull yourself out of the equation and begin to really help them. Now, I want to be clear: it's not about manipulating your customers. Manipulation happens with ill-intent. Instead, you want to be able to understand their emotions to know how to help them. To better understand all of the components that come along with emotional intelligence, I've brought on a very special guest: Jim Rembach. Jim Rembach is a certified Emotional Intelligence practitioner and former call center supervisor. Jim is the Founder of Beyond Morale, Call Center Coach, Ai for CX and a founding member of the Customer Experience Professionals Association's CX Expert Panel, Advisory Board Member for Customer Value Creation International (CVCI), Advisory Board Member for CX University, Host of the Fast Leader Show podcast, and an ICMI Top 50 Thought Leader and CX Influencer with IQPC. He specializes in applying Emotional Intelligence to Customer Experience and Employee Engagement to lead organizations in their customer-centric transformations. He is also a Certified Employee Retention Specialist, Certified Better Place to Work Expert, and an Empathy Mapping Expert. Download this episode today and learn how you can unlock the skill that's far more important than IQ: emotional intelligence. CONSTRAINT AND GRACE WARRIOR     “It's not what you do that makes you great. It's who you are that makes what you do great.” -Jim Rembach Highlights - Sometimes you have to adapt your own lingo to your potential clients. Anyone can build their emotional intelligence. When there's an emotional connection, it's harder to break up with your business. Don't generalize your customers, especially in a negative manner. When you give words to what you're thinking, it gives them power. Remove yourself from the equation and interpret things as the customer. Your emotional intelligence means more than your IQ. Since the year 2000, empathy has been plummeting at a huge rate. Entrepreneurs who unlock their emotional intelligence will be at a greater advantage. A business that comes from empathy should come naturally. Without a system for your emotional intelligence, you're in trouble. As creatives we've all heard about the importance of creating good habits. After all, it's not people who decide their destiny: it's their habits that decide it for them. One problem I've noticed a lot of people I coach have is that they try to do too much all at once. They try to change their entire routine for the day, and it makes things complicated. Chances are a huge change, even an hour or more, can be nearly impossible to turn into a habit. You're more likely to fall back into your old habits and not make the progress you want. The secret is to instead only change your routine by 5 minutes. You also don't need to change your routine completely. By doing what today's guest calls “habit stacking”, you're able to shift to add a new habit to your day and make the transition easier. As you incorporate the new habit you may find yourself naturally spending more and more time on it without hesitation. These small changes, over the course of time, will lead to huge results. To dive more into this I brought on the author of Success if 5 Minutes a Day: Karen Briscoe. Karen Briscoe is principal owner of the Huckaby Briscoe Conroy Group (HBC) with Keller Williams. The HBC Group has been recognized by the Wall Street Journal as one of the 250 Top Realtor® teams in the United States. Through HBC Group, Karen and her business partner Lizzy Conroy launched Community Charity Champions to raise funds for local nonprofit groups and organizations and was awarded the Social Corporate Responsibility Award for 2012 by the Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Karen has been a board member for Lift Me Up!, a therapeutic horseback riding program for children and adults with disabilities in Great Falls, Virginia, since 2006. Her family is actively involved at Trinity United Methodist Church in McLean, Virginia. Download this episode today to hear how you can make small changes that will have big a big impact. THE RESOURCE WARRIOR     “People don't decide their futures, they decide their habits. Their habits decide their future.” -Karen Briscoe Highlights - Everyone has 5 minutes a day to invest in their knowledge. Applying one thing a day means you'll be more able to apply the knowledge later. If you find things that stick well together, you're more likely to build a strong habit. Work on the business as much as you work in the business. If you want to learn to do something different, turn to a different industry. Acknowledge your customer's feelings. We never know all the circumstances in people's lives. Explain things by framing through others. Many Creative Warriors tend to think it's impossible to harness the thing they are best at: creativity. They think it's just a fountain that you let explode, and try to sort it all out later. There is a way to help with this, and it's by creating a solid system. It seems like rules would restrict your creativity, and a system would burn you out: but that's actually not true. A good system will allow your mind to do what it does best. It'll autonomize the tedious things that waste your time every day. The trick is to find the right system for you. When you make that discovery, you're going to make every moment in your life more valuable. You're going to appreciate your work more, have more time outside of your business, and get rid of the anxiety that being an entrepreneur brings. To dive deeper into this, I brought on an amazing expert on systems: Marina Darlow. Marina Darlow is a systems' expert, and a productivity geek. She sees her job as helping impact-driven entrepreneurs get 10-20 more productive hours a week, stop leaking money, and prevent stress-fuel breakdowns. An engineer by training, Marina came to a realization a couple years ago: working for a conglomerate is not as inspiring as she wants her life work to be. The quest for inspiration brought her to found Vision Framework, a company that builds small, purpose-driven businesses from the inside, helping entrepreneurs run their companies with ease by putting effective, easy-to-use, and fun systems in place. Download this episode today, and learn how you can build the right system that unlocks your creativity. THE SYSTEM WARRIOR     “Systems that work well for you are one of the best cures for anxiety.” - Marina Darlow Highlights - People think you need to either be creative or follow the rules. It's possible to use rules and systems to give direction to your creativity. Not having systems dilutes the best of you. Systems help optimize your limited resources. Small business owners have to deal with a large range of emotions. There are methods and containers to help optimize your system. Too many people tend to neglect a project management system. You don't need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to creating systems. Let your system be your boss. Just sit and right stuff down, and you will begin to see patterns. The value of a system is making time more enjoyable. 407: Mark Bowden - The Power of Body Language

The Self-Employed Life

There's one thing I've always been intrigued to study, and I'm sure you have too: body language. The idea that people may be saying more than they realize; that you're uncovering their secrets. It's a really exciting thing. There are a lot of myths, though, in the study of body language. The first is that people can't lie with their bodies. Of course we can, and of course we all do. All it takes is being aware of what your body is doing, and know what other people may be reading. For example, in conference rooms I'm often cold so I tend to cross my arms. I'm well aware that this can come off as aggressive or that I'm not caring, so I tend to force myself to keep them uncrossed. I'm essentially lying. When you try to read someone's body, you need to consider a lot of details - including the environment. Our digital world also has in impact on our body language, and there are things that even a book written ten years ago can't take into account. Like when I'm speaking, a lot of times I see people with their heads down and looking at their phones. That can seem like they aren't paying attention. I started to notice that people would come up to ask questions and they were reading from their phones. It turned out people weren't distracting themselves, they were actually more engaged. They were taking notes on their phone. I was trying to read their body language, creating assumptions, and I couldn't have been more wrong. To dive deeper into this topic for today's episode of Creative Warriors, I have brought in a body language expert: Mark Bowden. Mark discusses his new book, Truth and Lies, as well as the myths many of us have about body language. He dives into the complexity involved in this subject, and how you can accurately start trying to “read” people. Download this episode today to learn the truth about what people's actions are telling you. THE DON'T PANIC WARRIOR     “It's our job to manipulate. That's what causes us to be able to survive.” - Mark Bowden Highlights - The best advice ever given to humanity: “Don't Panic.” Lying and telling the truth are the two most important social skills we have. People tend to jump to negative conclusions about body language. All body language is a display of power, or a response to a display of power. When you need to make positive contact with people you don't know, you need to create trust and credibility as quickly as possible. Try to use an open palm when you point, it will be better received. Often times people project their beliefs on other people's body language. Suspending your own judgment will allow you to understand a situation fully. Always listen to your gut instinct if you think something is wrong. Try to show up less indifferent to the world around you. Manipulation is not always a bad or selfish thing. Does it seem crazy to have a conversation with an addiction expert on a podcast about entrepreneurship? Let me ask you this. Have you ever felt like your reality was different than what people thought about you? Have you ever felt like an "imposter?" The truth of entrepreneurship is that the image of success and happiness we project isn't always what's going on behind the scenes. Not that different than what an addict and the people him or her are managing. Very compelling conversation. The Talking Stick is in your hands now. Let us hear from you. If you're like me, chances are you don't like the idea of networking. It might feel a little sleazy, and conjure up images of a guy at an event passing out business cards to everyone he meets. In reality, that isn't networking - or at least it shouldn't be. You're already in a huge network. You're probably six degrees away from meeting everyone you already need and want to meet. The thing to work on is not making new connections, but maintaining and leveraging the network you already have. Don't let your old connection die. Keep up with people any chance you can, even if it's just an email to see how they are doing. This way it's not awkward when you find out you could use their help. To dive further into this, I brought back on the show a networking expert: David Burkus. David Burkus is a best-selling author, a sought after speaker, and associate professor of leadership and innovation at Oral Roberts University. His forthcoming book, Friend of a Friend, offers readers a new perspective on how to grow their networks and build key connections—one based on the science of human behavior, not rote networking advice. He's delivered keynotes to the leaders of Fortune 500 companies and the future leaders of the United States Naval Academy. His TED talk has been viewed over 1.8 million times and he is a regular contributor to Harvard Business Review. We sat down for this episode of Creative Warriors, and David shared some amazing insights on common mistakes people make when networking, and what you can do to really leverage your existing (and expansive) network. We cover everything from social media, to live events. Download this episode now and learn what it truly means to be a networker. THE WHO CAN HELP ME WARRIOR     “A network is a three-dimensional thing, not a list.” - David Burkus Highlights - Other people's advice is generally auto-biographical. A network is not something you build, it's something you are already in. Build a strong network by deepening your connection with people around you. Try to have your social network life mirror the way you are in person. Make sure you have clear rules about who you accept into your network. We're all six degrees away from being introduced to anyone. If you're on Facebook, you're only 4.7 people away from anyone. It's possible for anyone to be a super connector. Don't try to be the next Oprah. Be the Oprah of _______. Be more personal than a like or a comment. Most entrepreneurs I know enter a business looking to do what someone else does, only do it better. In the end, how much better can you do? 10%? 15%? You don't want to do what everyone else does, you'll just get lost in the crowd. Instead, do the exact opposite. The first trick is to look at what the competition is doing - then see what upsets you about it. Does it take too long to get the product? Is it tough to do? Look at every single negative aspect and find ways to make it better. Second, find a way to for people to experience something for themselves. Don't force an experience on them, just set them up for something and sit back to see if they will engage it. On this episode of The Creative Warriors, we are joined by Jesse Cole. Jesse is the Owner of Fans First Entertainment, who owns and operates the Savannah Bananas and the Gastonia Grizzlies. The teams have welcomed more than 1 million fans to their ballparks and have been featured on MSNBC, CNN, and ESPN. Jesse's teams have been awarded Organization of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, Business of the Year and have won three CPL Championships. Jesse is an in-demand speaker and author of “Find Your Yellow Tux - How to Be Successful by Standing Out” released in January 2018. Jesse is also the host of the Business Done Differently Podcast. Jesse believes to be successful you need to Stand Out and Be Different. He is passionate about creating attention, loving your customers more than your product and loving your employees more than your customers. Jesse's mantra is “Whatever's normal, do the exact opposite.” Jesse does practice what he preaches. He took a sport most people considered boring (baseball) and turned it into something magical. Download this episode now to learn how you can turn your industry upside down. WARRIOR OF GRATITUDE     “Be different, stand out, and create your own path.” - David Burkus Highlights - Embrace the fact that you are different. Put fans first. Your employees can be your biggest fans. Set the stage for people to create their own experiences. When you create attention, everyone starts paying attention to you. 16% of the best ideas come from work. When you get up in the morning, write down 10 ideas. Look at what frustrates you about a company, and do the exact opposite. If you could create the perfect experience, what would it look like? Do you have moments of feeling unfulfilled in your life? Perhaps you're chasing the wrong purpose. To really know what you should be doing in life, you need to discover your WHAT. What is it you're good at? What is it you are meant to do? So many people focus on the why, and it is important to know why you do what you do. But without the WHAT, you're never going to be able to master your talents. Have you ever known someone who was really smart, but ended up doing nothing with their talent? Known someone who was amazing at basketball, but never even tried out for their college team? They didn't understand what it was their gift is. The good news is, it's never too late. You can discover your WHAT now, and use it to leverage your field. Sometimes we're just too close to ourselves to really realize our purpose, which is why I brought on an amazing guest to dive further into it: Steve Olsher. Steve is known as the world's foremost reinvention expert. Famous for helping individuals and corporations become exceptionally clear on their WHAT – that is, the ONE thing they were created to do. His practical, no-holds-barred approach to life and business propels his clients towards achieving massive profitability while also cultivating a life of purpose, conviction, and contribution. My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! Highlights - Your why is that which you choose. Your WHAT is in your DNA. A gift without the desire to master is an ill received opportunity. Just because you have a certain talent doesn't mean you will be talented. Certain people are triggered to do positive things when they are told they can't do something. If we are going to excel on a consistent base it's super important to understand what allowed us to excel in past moments. A wrong decision can set up back a day, a month, a year, or even a decade. Reinvention has nothing to do with changing, it's getting back to the core of who you really are. Something that has always fascinated me is brand storytelling. Many large businesses are straight to the point and matter of fact about their products and services. It makes them feel cold and like a machine, just looking to get in and get out with my money as quickly as possible. On the opposite end, small businesses can be so full of passion and love for every little detail about their business they can overwhelm the customer. Like anything in life, there's a balance you need to find when you tell your customers your story. In the end, it doesn't matter what you say - it just matters how you are perceived. You need to take the time to know the rules of branding, storytelling, making on impact. You need to know it so well, you can forget about them. When that happens you're able to tap into your creative side, and be able to break them accordingly with how you see fit to help serve your brand. The rules and analytics are all their as a guide, but if you follow them all directly you're just going to end up looking like everyone else. To dive further into this, I brought on a master puzzle maker in the world of business: Ulli Appelbaum. Ulli has vast expertise in marketing and brand strategy. His international experience in coming up with fresh perspectives to position a brand, product or company as well as in innovation has helped companies, large and small, go from zero to success, without breaking the bank. Ulli's unique way of approaching business problems and helping businesses strategize has developed into a technique he calls Positioning-Roulette. Ulli's system of flashcards helps executives and teams overcome their mental barriers and see their company in a different light, uncovering fresh and actionable insights that trigger action, identify innovative ideas to stimulate brand growth and inspire fresh perspectives on businesses and categories. So download this episode today to learn how you too can balance both your right and left brain, so make your company stand out from the crowd. WARRIOR OF SELF LOVE     “There is a logic behind creativity.” - Ulli Appelbaum My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! Highlights - When developing a strategy, you have to put on your pants then your shoes. Analyze data by looking at it from different angles and perspectives. Know the rules so well you can let them go. That's when creativity can come out. Create a feedback loop in your business. Large companies usually focus too much on their product. Entrepreneurs tend to be so passionate they give their consumer too much information. Pricing creates perception. Be aware of what's unfolding before you. You know that I am all about making an emotional connection with your audience. Some may feel that's difficult in our tech heavy world, where it almost seems like we are losing that touch of humanity. In reality, it's easier than ever - thanks to video. Most of us have 4k ability in our pockets. Video is no longer an investment that costs thousands and thousands of dollars. The written word is fading, especially when people use devices like their phones and tablets. With video, you can grab the audience with using visuals only. It's easier to get your story out there, and really show the humanity behind you and what you do. To dive deeper into this, we are joined by George Zwierko on this episode of Creative Warriors. George Zwierko is the Co-founder of Three Chairs Productions. While attending a magnet high school in New York City, George had the chance to work in advertising, right on Madison Avenue in New York City, the fulcrum of the advertising industry. George went on to study at the Pratt Institute of Art and Design in Brooklyn, earning a bachelor's degree in 1988. He then joined the Army and served in Germany from 1988 to 1991 where he also had a chance to create ads for the Army and later, after his discharge, for the Department of Defense. He is also the founder of Rumbo Cultural Marketing and Advertising. George shares his insights on corporate storytelling, and how easy it is to create video content that will really show off your business. Show up how people expect you to show up. Story videos tend to be longer and go more in depth. Most people don't turn on sound on social media until the visual compels them.
